- The Best Pencil in the World search continues with this head-to-head pencil comparison of the Palomino Blackwing and the USA Gold yellow pencil.
I came across a blog that compared these two pencils. They are not of the same class, and the blog put the USA Gold (cheaper) pencil above the Blackwing. We were invited to test this out for ourselves, and that is exactly what I did in this video.

Palomino Blackwing 602 and USA Gold MB Grading:
• Palomino Blackwing 602...
Have you tried the USA Titanium pencils? They have a deeper tonal value then the Golds do.
If I ever did, there would be a video of it on my channel. I can't remember.
For the price, the USA gold is great. The quality lacks a little here and there( paint chipping, off centered core, etc) but the core is similar to the blackwing. Thanks for the video though!
It's a good pencil, no doubt. One of those 'bargain' brands.
The long-point sharpener wastes a lot of graphite. I bought it for the novelty, but it eats up pencils faster.
*****
No, the Long point wastes a lot of the pencil. That is fact. Look at how much graphite gets shaved off in the second hole.
Sorry Rix, but after 5 years, I think that this comparison is not fair and I will explain you why. To be fair you should compare a Blackwing HB and not a Blackwing 3B. So, it will be appreciated if you release a new video by using a ERAS anniversary or a vol.4 which are HB hard firm pencils. Thanks for your understanding, Leo
You first have to consider WHY I would even bother comparing a USA pencil to a Blackwing black to begin with. It is mentioned in this video that I am responding to someone's claim in a blog that the USA pencil was a better pencil. Not even close.
The comparison was not based any pencil grade, but on which is a better pencil overall. And sure, the Blackwing's 3B-ish grade will be smoother and darker than ANY HB, including the USA Gold. But I wasn't the one who made the original claim that the USA Gold was better, or the same.
Any Blackwing is better than the USA Gold pencil. There really would be no point in dragging the USA Gold through the mud again. Thanks for commenting!
@@RixCanDoit Dear Rix, it is clear now, your position is logical. Thanks for your feedback
Can u do one with the pearl
Jonathan Crompton The Pearl falls in the middle between the Blackwing and the Blackwing 602. Is there something specific you want to see? I have a box of Pearls, so let me know what you'd like to see video'd. Thanks.
Can you show the difference in how dark and how it feels to write with the blackwings
Jonathan Crompton It might not translate well on video since they are really close. But I'll see what I can do.
RixCanDoit ok
+Jonathan Crompton Not sure if I mentioned to you that I did do a video on the Pearl. You should find it in my Pencils playlist.
The blog was just biased because it centers around USA made products. With that in mind it seems foolish of Palomino to have sent her a Japan made pencil. They set themselves up for a bad review from her.
Makes sense. What were they thinking? :)
@@RixCanDoit They should have sent her a Golden Bear :)
I wouldn't want to cut my wood....
Yeah, this review is a bit pointless. The main reason is that as you said, the Blackwing is of a different class. It is a replacement of the older Eberhard Faber Blackwing, considered the best pencil of all time (when that was discontinued, the value skyrocketed to $50 per pencil). Plus, the fact that an HB pencil (USA Gold) is equal to the equivalent of a 2B (Blackwing) is beyond me.
No contest. 👍
Great Bread Sad thing is I don't even own a Blackwing. I do own a pack of Hi-Unis at HB and that, along with the Tombow Mono 100 are the only two pencils comparable to the Blackwings, one person claiming they are better,
i noticed that my black wings have NO gold band next to the eraser and NO horse, instead ive got trees on mine......
whats up with that???..........older design was much nicer.
You have two different Blackwing situations here. The standard Blackwings that are NOT part of the Volumes Subscription have horses. The Blackwing Volume sets have trees. And the Gold Band is on the Blackwing (soft) that is not a Volumes pencil.
wouldn't a fair comparison be between the 602 and the USA gold? the 602 is supposed to be the #2 equivalent so this review is completely useless. of course a softer value lead is going to be darker and smoother... -_-
You missed the point stated in the video. This was a direct response to a blog that stated the Gold was better than the Blackwing. She said nothing about the 602. Had that been her comparison, I would have gone that route. Bottom line, the Gold is not better than the Blackwing, and that would include any Blackwing in my opinion. They are superior to the USA Gold pencils.
RixCanDoit Okay, I can see that - the fact that the blog you used as reference for this video has no mention of the 602. I don't have any blackwing pencils so I can not be sure but I would think the 602, being a #2 would be much closer to the USA Gold. Another problem with the USA Gold is that their quality through the years may not be as consistent as the blackwings so a batch made in 2011 might be completely different in quality compared to one made in 2016.
+Imran A. Mughal Good point. Quality could and probably did change, although I'd find it hard to think it was ever 'better' than the Blackwing. I'm going to do a comparison with the 602 as you suggest. Thanks!
RixCanDoit Thank you, I'm looking forward to watching that review vid!
You mean the 602 is the equivalent of a 2B lead, right? Otherwise, both pencils are equal.
