If I recall correctly, the first OpenBOR SOR mod (and used as a base for other SOR OpenBOR mods later) was Rage of the Streets, created by AxelBlazeAdam and Albatross, and released in 2006. Then a modded version of Rage of the Streets, with 4-player support, new stuff, some of them ripped from the version 4.0 of Streets of Rage Remake, and new routes was released as "Streets of Rage XXX" (XXX is pronounced as Triplex), and it was made by Chinese developer Allan.Cylakes in 2007. There is some videos of this mod development here on RUclips. In early 2010, a Chinese developer named Volcanic released "Bare Knuckle Vacuum". Volcanic also re-used some stuff from the last two OpenBOR games and the Remake, however the game fared so much better Gameplay-wise, even being "head-to-head" at the Remake's gameplay (the SOR BOR mods compared to the Remake back then were a lackluster, Vacuum was a big improvement). Vacuum also introduced new routes and a new Combo system. Then a upgraded version of Vacuum, released as "Bare Knuckle VI" was made by Volcanic and AnKing, again with new updates and now ripping some of the stuff of Streets of Rage Remake version 5.0, gameplay-wise same as Vacuum. The "Z" series was made by ChiNa, who also re-used some stuff from Vacuum (I think Z was made with Bare Knuckle Vacuum as a base) and some time later ChiNa would release Streets of Rage Z 2 with Ralf and Yuri from KOF as playable characters, again with new stuff and some of them ripped from SORR.
As a huge SoR fan, I had no idea there were fan remakes let alone so many of them, but honestly I'm not surprised. Will need to track down and try to play some of these. Thanks for the video.
I knew someone would already have beat me to the punch given how much time has past. 'Tuff E Nuff (aka Dead Dance)' was a post-apocalyptic competitive fighting game that takes place in the 22nd century. It was developed and published by Jaleco in the early 90's and at the time was probably the closest thing to a 'Fist of the Northstar' fighting game available on the SNES.
Andrew Hughes People need to splice in stuff from the utterly self-aware Violent Storm. The music itself being used would be far more memorable than Mortal Kombat yet again.
As far as coverage goes, look up Legend of the Double Dragon. It's intended as a fan remake of SNES Super Double Dragon, complete with cut scenes and story that never made it into the game. But they took the ball and ran with it to create something totally original. Put it this way, you know the term "easy to pick up, hard to master"? This game has that. The sheer depth and scope of the fighting engine is just mind blowing, especially for an OpenBor game.
Thank you very much for reviewing this fantastic game! Max has a spinning pile driver when you reach power level L5. Grab any enemy and then press down, up and punch!
I play Streets of Rage 2X. It allows up to 4 players, it has Widescreen, air combos, input commands (quarter circle forward + attack), etc... In my opinion the best OPENBOR SOR
Finally, you're just discovering what is Openbor. There are plenty of other mods really well done. Actually this one is just an old strange one. Glad to see some videos talking about this modding game "scene" !!
Oh man, I remember my times messing around with OpenBOR back in 2013. The sheer number of mods available are endless. It's a shame that the first hosting site for these mods went under and a lot of them became lost media. However, there are still a vast number of them available today.
Coming from someone who played SOR back in 1994..... This Streets of Rage Z is better than every official release by far. I enjoyed this so much and its actually challenging. Thanks for introducing me to the OpenBOR world too!
Regarding how over the top it gets later on, some of it feels similar to the shift in style when reading Matthew Drury's Streets of Rage Saga fanfic. I mean, sure, I can live with robots and cyborgs in some of the stories, but as the stories progress, it definitely dives into the supernatural and religious allegory.
I mentioned it in the last fighting game, but it goes better here: Undercover Cops. Just wild, over-the-top action. People throwing cars, every punch looks like someone's head is coming off. It's the game review we need.
Denjin Makai 2 is one of the very best beat-em-up’s out there imo. The original which got a release on SNES is worth a look too. As someone who’s not that up on the whole rom hack scene I’d love a decent video explaining how to get games like this running. Appreciate it’s not really your ‘style’ but if anyone can recommend one in RUclips I’d be very appreciative 👍
I usually don't hear about things like games from china. China has been very influential in fighting movies starring people like Bruce Lee or h jackie chan but not much about games. This should be very interesting.
I'll repeat my suggestion from your Street of Rage Remake review: you should try TMNT Rescue Palooza. It's a great beat em up that does a great call back to the franchise. As for this game, this looks interesting and gets a big plus for 4 player co-op. I find it weird that it included a out of series character in place of Skate, whose my second favorite character besides Blaze. Thanks for the review. Keep it up!
Great that you are reviewing OPENBOR games! Some titles that deserve reviews are NightSlashers X which greatly improves the original, Justice League United, Marvel Infinity War, TMNT Recue Palooza, Final Fight LNS Ultimate and there is one based of He Man ;)
I was on the open BOR scene when it was brand new. Played a bunch of early version but eventually just stop playing missing out all the new ones coming out. This Chinese one I never played and looks dope.
Fanmade games are a surprising adventure. Never heard of SORZ, but the concept is pretty cool. Actually I'm very curious what else the current remake team made before getting the spotlight. I know of Windjammers.. but before that.. I'm fascinated by how this series digs deep and can deliver something different.
What is that weird consolized gba you showed at the end that has the word "Visteon" on it. do you have a video about this already?? Looks interesting...
The next Openbor game you should cover should be Legend of the Double Dragon. No other openbor game can match the breathtaking quality of this game. It was made almost entirely by 1 man. Over a period of 10 years. Legend of The Double Dragon or LOTDD for short, is like a SORR version of the tragically unfinished game of Super Double Dragon or Return of Double Dragon in Japan. The difference is, the game is finished now. And it is finished according the vision of the original director, Mr. Muneki Ebinuma. It has all the cut scenes that were meant to be included in the original as well as plenty more. The biggest thing that sets this game apart from SORR or any other beat em' up for that matter is THE MOVES. In this game you can "Style Switch" to any of the 3 different fighting styles of the previous DD games. You can switch from Super, to 2 to a 1+3 hybrid style. You can do all their moves and their special moves in their styles. Even bigger than that is you have the ability to do "Cancel Combos". Cancel Combos are extra, totally original sprite edited moves that you can pull off by interrupting a style switch animation with a punch or kick button. You have 2 cancel combos you can do in any style, in any direction, that branch out into other combos depending on when you press punch or kick. It really is like nothing ever done in a beat em up game before. The combinations for custom combos are almost limitless. Oh, and I'm just getting started. Another unique an interesting thing about this particular version of Mr. Herrera's project is that all the SFX in this game as well as music come from Kung-Fu movies from the 70's and 80's. If you close your eyes and just listen to the game, It going to sound like an old martial arts film from back in the day. Before I go on anymore. I just want you to watch this video to see for yourself how amazing this game is. I have dedicated my channel solely to promoting this guys game. and If you think LOTDD is awesome, just wait for the expansion. It will be the ULTIMATE DOUBLE DRAGON game! ruclips.net/video/IZwttMfnWr4/видео.html
Gawd, there's so many of these games based on the BOR engine. Mostly, they're great fun!!! "Double Dragon Extreme" and "Street Fighter Of Rage" (I kid you not) immediately spring to mind.
X5 reminds me of the Protagonist in that old arcade game *"ESWAT"* Just a different variation without the helmet and arm gun. Oh yeah, an *ESWAT* is an old Sega game. Perhaps that's where they some concept for X5.
You got some info wrong. The motorcycle stages are in the final version of bkiii they are just inaccessible by normal means and bugged. The data for the riding sprites was moved to a different part of the rom and the data was not updated. So the game loads garbage data which causes bad slowdown
There so many smaller Beat em' ups I want to see a history video about Like :- Armored Warriors Alien Vs Predator Dungeons & Dragons ToD and SoM Ninja Baseball Bat Man Guardian Heroes Battle Circuit Fighting Force PS1 the only 3D beat em up I know The Punisher I think you will cover both Double Dragon/River City (I think both in the same series) Golden Axe in some point, they are the big ones you didn't cover yet.

Not from me, because as you said Whang did a job so good I have nothing really to add. I'm not like WatchMojo and instead try my best not to regurgitate other info videos haha.
Bit of a tangent, but as you cover more beat'em ups, do you think you'll ever touch on X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse or Marvel Superheroes in War of the Gems? About openbor games I recommend Final Fight LNS Ultimate, the gameplay is awesome. The next month I think the new update will be ready. Another that liked me was Dungeons and Dragons The Rise of Warduke, is impressive what fans did and maybe the longest game that I played in that engine.
Top Hat Gaming Man, you should do a video on Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64! It'll be great to do a video on a fighting game where the Nintendo characters will duke it out.
I personally could never get tired of streets of rage content
I also suffer whatever this condition is
Same lol

As a huge SoR fan, I had no idea there were fan remakes let alone so many of them, but honestly I'm not surprised. Will need to track down and try to play some of these. Thanks for the video.
The boss at the 7:30 mark is Jadoh from the super Nintendo game Tuff e Nuff (Dead Dance in Japan).
Thank you!
I thought it looked like him or cheap boss type used in mugen.

i luv tuff e nuff 😍
1 of the 1st snes games i ever played

"It came from China". I heard what you did there, well done!!!!! XD

It's the Chinese Streets of rage 😂
Haha I can't say or hear the word 'China' without thinking of Trump's way of saying it

Jesus, 2 boxers and an Abedede?! That's brutal.
Thank you very much for reviewing this fantastic game! Max has a spinning pile driver when you reach power level L5. Grab any enemy and then press down, up and punch!
Glad to see you went with the thumbnail suggestion 😉
The mutants are ripped from Mutation Nation on the NeoGeo MVS.
Thanks for sharing did not know of this game, really enjoy your video's keep on going ! 😃
I play Streets of Rage 2X. It allows up to 4 players, it has Widescreen, air combos, input commands (quarter circle forward + attack), etc... In my opinion the best OPENBOR SOR
Oh? Is that Streets of Rage 2 themed only?
Blanka from SF2 is one of the end of stage bosses in 2X
@@robertlawrence9000 No it has a SOR3 route and you can unlock additional characters and modes as you complete the game
@@PsychoGoldVideos oh cool! Thanks. So is it different than Streets of Rage Remake or does it use any of the same assets or something?

At 9:52 the boss X8 is a boss known as Kozuma from the Neo Geo game Eight Man. A kind of obscure reference, but I do really like that game.
As a kid me and my friend called fatty boom boom “the big fat fire baby”
Known as "Roads Of Anger" in the states
I prefer Highways of Hatred.
My boxed copy called it Pathways of Pisstivity...hmmm...probably got a UK bootleg.
Bare Chuckle
I got a bootleg that has no difficulty options, was called 'Footpaths of Mild Annoyance'.
"Trails of Irritability"
Is it me or did I see Slash from Final Fight as one of the enemies?
Yup
Thanks THGM. I have never heard of this. It does look fun though. I am gonna see if I can find it and give it a bash. I love me some streets of rage👍

7:35 That was the final boss Jade in the Jaleco game, Tuff-e-Nuff. Jaleco had a great assortment of beat em ups back then. Loved them
The fact that there is a clip of you running the art museum steps in Philly....bravo. I'll buy you a beer if you find yourself here, in future.
you might wish to take.a look into Final Rage. one of the many final fight/ Streets.of rage mashup games made in the S.O.R Game engine for a lark.
