Fellow cyclist here. I'm so attracted to this lifestyle. It's so interesting seeing the day-to-day logistics. I would find it a bit stressful moving locations multiple times a day to avoid breaching local rules and regulations. Also I'd be kind of nervy at night parking in a secluded location. Living the nomadic life has its pros and cons. But at least you can say you're free and you're never far from home.
There are times where I just would like to not move during the day, but then I can find a free camp out of town to do exactly that. The night time nerves....yeah, but you get a feel for it over time and you becomes less nervous. I still keep an eye out though when I hear cars close by....not easy, but well worth it overall.😁
1. It’s Victoria and 2. It’s Australia. This country has federal, state, and local govt. In other words laws on laws, on laws. I’m surprised there aren’t any laws on your sleeping position.
Loved the multi drone footage, looks like you guys had lots of fun. It’s so stupid that you can’t even sleep in your vehicle on someone’s property. Glad you’re ‘hypothetically’ finding a way around it lol
Great video as always - I find the whole (can't sleep in the vehicle) thing really interesting and contradictory given that it is also illegal to drive when fatigued and there are signs everywhere telling people to stop revive and survive - so I am guessing the powers that have decided that sleeping in a vehicle is not a legitimate way to revive and continue driving safely? Very weird. (Under section 10 of the Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Standard 2010 (the Standard), a driver of a public passenger vehicle must not operate a vehicle while fatigued.)
That's actually one of the favourite "get out of jail" cards that people keep suggesting in the vanlife forums....not sleeping, just fatigued. I think trying to use that when in your vans bed next to the beach might be a stretch 😂
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces I agree .. I think the contradiction is funny - but there are plenty of those in different legislations. As a person living near the water in QLD and having a brick-and-mortar home I have no issue with the vans I see around here. I can't really understand begrudging people having access to basic human needs like water, and shelter. I think they (they, being councils) would be far better off having a good set of clear rules and support system (like water and toilet emptying facilities) around it so it is well managed rather than just saying no - I mean people are going to do it anyway.
Jason can you recommend a south NSW coastal forest for overnight camping. I have two teens, a van and little time. Any recommendations would be appreciated 👍😊
@barbarabruce7648 hi Barbara. I would suggest the Bodalla rest area at Narooma. It's got walks straight from the campground, MTB Park across the road, toilets and water...plus a short drive to Narooma which is beautiful. When I stop in state forests, I just find a clearing and park. No amenities and usually not very picturesque. Just somewhere to sleep.
Wow, nice sunny weather there. I lived there for 3 months in 2001 between March and June and the overcast days turned into weeks and months. A depressing (and bloody cold) experience it was for a Queenslander but the people were great, as was the cycling and public transport infrastructure.
Great video Jason. Good lord, Melbourne laws are really tight for van life folk. They give no quarter down there, so it seems. Anyway I enjoyed your footage and the drone wars in the park were great. A few of the drones looked quite tiny. Enjoy your travels and living that great van life. Cheers, Sean.
Thanks Sean. I think QLD is worse...just illegal at a state level to stay in a van 🙄 My son just got a new drone that fits in the palm of your hand....goes fast too!😂
Live in W.A now…but you are bringing back memories of my youth….looking at Melbourne now…bloody huge…thou l live in a very small town in the stunning south west…l could never live in a city..no way would l sleep in a van in the city..l know you don’t as you haven’t got a permit…so many free camp sites around Perth…l am so enjoying your channel….take care
Morning! So even if you had a manufactured mobile home you can't sleep in it? How unwelcoming! Loved the antics with the drones. It made me remember my brother has built a drone flying course on the family farm.
@MakingStuffGoingPlaces I appreciated seeing Point Gellibrand. My mother's cousin lived on a lighthouse there for many years until it was stuck by a ship.
Awesome Jason, happy to see you back in my hometown, have you thought about heading out east to wards the Dandenongs for a day? Lots of beaut spots to video around here.
Cheeky Drone Boys but obviously loving your company. You’re a good Droner LOL. THE 3x Gimbal sounds good for swooping. Loved seeing the amazing Melbourne outskirts. Been there many times for business and had the honour of walking on MCG grass and behind the scenes. Love the Lanes and the Waterfront Cafes. Nice to see beaches and rivers. Did I see someone going all the way to end of the banana 🍌 snip LOL?
Hahaha....after you mentioned that, I noticed the footage I took in the morning saw the end of the banana, so had to include it for you 😂 I did a video previously around the city centre. Depending on how long I end up hanging around, I may go for a wander again 😀
Always love your channel, Jason. Regardless of where you are, you always make it worthwhile watching. 😊 Shame about all those rules and regs about sleeping in your van, though!!!
🤦😂 it was a test to see who reads the titles.... Camera picture quality has certainly come a long way. I was watching footage from one of my old cameras the other day....really made me appreciate what I have now!
As have I and many others, but if you google "Melbourne City council sleeping in vehicles", you'll see you need a permit. Not saying that you should stop sleeping in your van, but pays to be aware of the rules.😊👍
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces Too busy arresting people for social media posts perhaps, the ultra progressive woke left so called Labor grubberment a bit off the rails down there IMO. Nanny has pink hair and a militant swagger.
I don't have any complaints. It's doing the job just fine. When running it pulls 55 to 65 watts, so pretty good compared to others I've tested...usually closer to 100W.
@cameronsmith2701 just make sure you have an inverter than can handle the start up load. I have a Giandel 2000/4000W pure sine. Does it fine but still pulls a lot of juice from the battery in start.
Hey Cameron, just remembered that my milk sometimes goes off....mainly in summer and only when I have it in the door. It doesn't get any airflow because of the veggie crisper and other bottles, so tends to not stay cold enough. You can turn the fridge down a bit more, but then my ice cream is too hard 😂
Hi Jason my wife and I love your videos we look forward to see them can I ask you a question what video editor app do you use is it free or do you pay for the app regards Newy Detecting
Thanks Craig. I use Devinci Resolve and yes, I use the free version. You will need a substantial graphics card though....mine struggles. If you want to do it in your phone, I'd recommend Inshot, but you'll need to subscribe to remove the watermark.
I think flying around that tower was a good indication of that...get to see things that would normally be quite difficult to access. Could have gotten a lot closer but didn't want to disturb the peace for too long 😂
I'm fairly certain that anyone taking council's water more than makes up for it by supporting local businesses through purchases like groceries and other essentials. It would be interesting to find out how to acquire a permit for sleeping in vehicles overnight. If a permit is required, surely it should be obtainable - or am I just being completely delusional?
If you get 'the knock' just dont open the door. They might leave a ticket, but they will never be able to prove the offence of you sleeping in there. You were staying at friends nearby.....
Not answering is definitely a strategy. I just prefer not to stay in high risk locations.... generally if other people are staying there, then the Rangers know about that spot 😁
I also find the whole argument about stealing water ridiculous Jason. You are in the community and spend money on groceries and fuel etc in the area but they whine about 25-40c of water! Where I am (Newcastle) it is so camper and RV UNfriendly, no dump points and hardly any water. If you ever need water you are welcome to use ours!
I noted the rubbish next to his van in that unnamed carpark. It’s OK for drivers to dump their rubbish in public places everywhere but heaven forbid if middle aged polite tidy community minded van dwellers spend a single night there.
I guess the problem is we are there for longer, so the only things people see in the park are vans....the grots that leave the rubbish eat their midnight Macca's then take off 🙄 leaving all their rubbish behind.
Your water argument is weak because water authorities make money from the connection and sewage changes. Water is cheap, the infrastructure is not. BTW in Victoria I note some councils are now charging for dump points.
Personally I wouldn't be against paying a reasonable amount for access to water and dump points, exactly for the reasons you mention. I guess in reality though, there would be so few people using that facility that it would never pay back.
Fellow cyclist here. I'm so attracted to this lifestyle.

That rule of no sleeping in your vehicle even when its on private property is just nuts.
Yeah....though I don't think they enforce it very strictly. I guess it gives the council power to do something if people lodge complaints...
1. It’s Victoria and 2. It’s Australia.
This country has federal, state, and local govt. In other words laws on laws, on laws. I’m surprised there aren’t any laws on your sleeping position.
@MrFastFarmer 😂👍
it's probably in the fine print somewhere
Yes Jason like so many others 'we love your channel'. Don't worry it's never the same old stuff. You always make it interesting.
Thanks Steven! Always appreciate the support 😊👍

Yeah, it was a fun evening 😂
I'll chat some more about the no sleeping in vehicles thing in the next video.

South coast NSW has it right with the water top up stations and the State Forests where you can camp for free.

If you’re still looking around Melbourne, you might like to head out east into the Dandenong Rangers bush 😊
Yeah, that's a good suggestion. I haven't spent much time over that side.
A very nice hypothetical video! Loved the drone footage having fun with your son and his mates. Hope Melbourne treats you well. Travel safe.
thanks mate. 😁👍

😂 Easter weekend is the cut off for me! Weather turns to absolute rubbish from the until Christmas 😂
A viewing area for penguins? Are people allowed to use it too?

It varies by council but all that I've checked say the same about sleeping in mobile structures. So I'm on the run!😂
@MakingStuffGoingPlaces everyone loves a badass lol
@MakingStuffGoingPlaces I appreciated seeing Point Gellibrand. My mother's cousin lived on a lighthouse there for many years until it was stuck by a ship.

The drones chasing you was so funny. Never seen that before😂😂
😂 the video came out better than I expected
Awesome Jason, happy to see you back in my hometown, have you thought about heading out east to wards the Dandenongs for a day? Lots of beaut spots to video around here.
I may even do that. I need some new things to look at around Vic and haven't spent much time on the eastern side.👍

@Yachtvancar 👍 you'll see a different swoop in the next video....strapped my GoPro to my son's big drone!😂

Fortunately I don't think they're to tough on enforcement 😁
Those drones are like electronic magpies!
😂😂👍
I wondered how pips were made 😜. Isnt drone and adventure camera footage amazing now with 4k. Great footage as usual. 👍

Looks like a Nerd Convention at that drone park
😂😂👍
Frantic drones and a group of motionless people...looks hilarious
Very good Jason. Living the life , as they say!
Thanks Michael. I can't complain....even though I regularly do 😂
I’m from Melbourne. It’s not illegal to sleep in your camper van in Melbourne…. I’ve done it many times.
As have I and many others, but if you google "Melbourne City council sleeping in vehicles", you'll see you need a permit.
Not saying that you should stop sleeping in your van, but pays to be aware of the rules.😊👍
Pretty sure you need a Permit to get a Permit in Melbourne! lol Seriously though always good to catch up on yuh Video!! Cheers!!!
It's known as the nanny state for a reason. 🙄
At least they don't seem too over the top on enforcement.

How are you liking the chiq fridge, and what is the power consumption like ?
I don't have any complaints. It's doing the job just fine. When running it pulls 55 to 65 watts, so pretty good compared to others I've tested...usually closer to 100W.
@MakingStuffGoingPlaces that's good to know, planning on putting one in our caravan after that response. Thank you 😊

@Klunge the biggest problem I have with that approach is I'm a light sleeper... usually too much traffic for me 😂
