    Just to the north of Kent Ohio likes the remains of the Erie yard. A public bike trail runs through it. There is the base of the water tower and the foundation of the roundhouse and turntable. It's definitely worth checking out in the fall when the brush is down.

    Growing up in Binghamton NY, I remember seeing the most "Diesel Locomotive" looking paint scheme of the EL RR everywhere. The big grey locos looked so intimidating with their rectangular logo out in front. I remember seeing them disappear quickly into the "big blue blob" . The saddest sight was seeing a newly painted blue and white loco with the EL paint still visible underneath! After a while the Delaware and Hudson dominated the rails. Their engines looked so flashy and aggressive. It was hard not to be in awe. At least the sterile looking blue and white engines went away! Those memories were burned in a long time ago. After that NS was everywhere, then CSX. Now I see a lot of Susquehanna engines. It is nice that there is still rail activity but none of the other lines look as amazing as the grey, maroon and yellow beasts of the early 70's.

    Thanks for correctly noting the Erie Lackawanna's starting date: Monday, October 17, 1960! (I watched one RUclips posting that, incorrectly, states it's October 10th) This is the same day I was born, in a railroad boxcar (this freight car was Incorporated into a house and our Doctor was out of town so my Dad delivered me at home), a stones throw from GTW's Elsdon Yard. I've since fallen in ❤️ Love with the EL. Just purchased a variety of HO scale passenger equipment to model the Phoebe Snow and Lake Cities. Now at least I can ride it in minature and hopefully the Dining Car specials that are part of your presentation! Thanks again for your efforts!! Sincerely, David 😷 in Chicago 🇺🇸

    My Grandfather built a home near the Harrison ave bridge in Scranton in the late sixties. As a kid around 10 years old I would run out to the bridge every time I heard a train . I remember seeing up to 5 GP 7s and 9s on the head end and 3 or 4 shoving to get East bound freights out of the valley . What a sight !!

  • @tombell108

    I grew up in Parsippany NEW JERSEY roughly 4 miles from Denville and back in the early 70s we would ride our bicycles there. AND we fairly often would see CS-9 and maybe 1 ANOTHER FREIGHT train. AND OF COURSE the old LACKAWANNA M.U. CAR'S! AND one weekday we saw an Alco RS3 leading a Boonton line TRAIN onto the MAINLINE to Dover and possibly Port Morris.
    Ahh those were the days! I wish they were back again! But so much for the loved and sadly lost ERIE LACKAWANNA!

    I grew up next door to the Erie railroad tracks in Lancaster, NY
    Seen everything from those dragons to a derailment, and the progression of locomotives.
    The Erie R.R runs parallel to the New York Central... A few blocks north.
    Freight trains entering Buffalo are full, while cars leaving Buffalo are empty because of little to no industry. Plus I hear all the most interesting stories from the old timers.

    • @Westerner78
      @Westerner78 3 года назад +1

      Rates were raised to get rid of unprofitable short distance freight hauls. Mail removed from passenger trains killed the trains. The whole private passenger industry went bankrupt in Oct 1967 when the final national mail routes were put on trucks. A leader in this program was General Motors. They just had derailed the cities, by buying streetcar companies, and scrapping them out and putting their buses on the streets. Half the riders bought cars, and buses had to be replaced more often than trolleys. $$$$ They paid road taxes at that time. (they don't today) those taxes and the taxes on railroads and their passenger tickets were used to build airports and highways.

    Great collage, especially in the southern tier where the Erie Lackawanna dominated the southern tier main line. It was a double track from Binghamton to at least Hornell, trains almost every half hour, reminds me of when I was a kid watching them go by, uboats, sd45s, B and C 23 and 30-7's and some geeps. AC; The Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, years and years ago, had a right of way crossing into Indiana, from East to West. The trains and the right-of-way have been a long gone fixture for many decades. All there is to show of its prior existence is the remnants of a pathway corridor which still can be seen from satellite imaging. Here is a GOOGLE Maps image, which shows the path of the old right-of-way. The tracks have been removed, and what is remaining resembles a utility easement. This location is at the Intersection of U.S. Highway 224, and Indiana State Route 1, in Wells County Indiana, just south of the town of Ossian. The property between the Rail Right-Of-Way and the highway were 80 years ago, Sugar Beet Fields, and were cultivated by local and migrant farm labor LINK: www.google.com/maps/place/US-224+%26+IN-1,+Ossian,+IN+46777/@40.8306155,-85.1665119,544m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x881593130043850b:0x305a00d0779f1063!8m2!3d40.8300107!4d-85.1661793?hl=en

The CF&E, in the Decatur, Indiana vicinity services the Soybean processing business, with spur lines East to VanWert, and Delphos, Ohio, and to Fort Wayne Indiana.

      Well Santa Fe did not want the commuter service. Plus the New York banks on Wall Street did not want a western railroad in the east. The super rich always win and they are invested and sell tax free highway and airport bonds. EL did not get a bailout, the bonds were due soon,. And unsiders made a killing on them when Con Job bought the east end of the railroad for 600 million dollars! EL really did not join CON JOB. they only sold the east end of the railroad to them. The west end was sold off for nothing. Unlimited highway and airport building killed it all.
