LUXURY TRAIN in Alaska from Anchorage to Denali (Holland America Line's McKinley Explorer)

- We are about to embark on one of the most exciting adventures of our lives! We are heading to ALASKA!! Not the cruise that we have done before but a land tour + cruise with Holland America Line to see so much more! We will visit: Anchorage, Denali National Park, Fairbanks, Dawson (Canada), Whitehorse (Canada), Skagway, Ketchikan and ending in Vancouver!! We are beyond excited!!
We start with two days in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, before beginning our cruise tour. Staying right in downtown, there is a lot to see and do in walking distance. Did you know that Ship Creek is the most fished urban creek in North America? When we were there, hundreds of people were on the banks fishing for salmon! Also, if you have a car, there are a lot of beautiful places just outside of Anchorage! We visited Beluga Point, named so as the best spot to view Beluga whales during peak season, but has gorgeous scenery all year! The snowcapped mountains are breathtaking!
Beginning our cruise tour, we took a quick bus ride from our hotel to the train station to board the McKinley Explorer - HAL's LUXURY train that will take us to Denali! This ride is absolutely spectacular!! The train car has two parts, the upper part has a glass dome so from your seat, you can enjoy a 180-degree view of the beauty of Alaska. And the bottom of the train car is the dining room, where you can enjoy specialty Alaskan meals for breakfast and lunch. We had a bison sandwich and reindeer chili... where else can you have food like this?
The train ride is about 6 hours and takes you through small towns, along rivers and past stunning mountains. And always be on the lookout for wildlife as you never know what will pop up next to the train! We saw lots! There was even a bear sighting, but we missed that one.
When you arrive a the train station in Denali, you move from the train to a bus to the final destination for the next two days at the McKinley Chalet Resort right outside of Denali National Park. The resort is beautiful and expansive! You can walk anywhere you want to go, but there is also a shuttle that will take you as well. Everything you need is onsite including two full restaurants, snack bars, bars and live entertainment. Denali Square is the heart of the resort where you can sit around a campfire into the night.
Speaking of night... fun fact is that you are in 'the land of the midnight sun' where it never really gets dark! It is so strange to be outside after 11pm and it is bright! But no worries, there are blackout curtains on the windows!

Have you ever been on an Alaska cruise tour?? Or an Alaska cruise? Share your experience with us!
Never been on Alaskan cruise. It takes me two years just to save up for Caribbean cruise. I’m sure people like me living on fixed income knows what I’m talking about
Flightseeing in Misty Fjords National Park is a must, but it will definitely cost you... Heading into Denali National Park as early as you can get in is another must do. The wildlife is most active at this time and I cannot believe how close up you can get, and how many encounters we had. I spent the entire train ride in the open air car.... the hair was a little messed up but the fresh air was worth it. This is an amazing way to see Alaska...
Following your trip closely. Taking our first trip to Alaska in August - HAL 7 day land followed by 7 day cruise. As usual a great job with the video and information you're providing!
I have only done an Alaska land tour with Alaska Adventures Unlimited as hubby gets seasick. It was fabulous. Got to see Brown Bears close up in the wild! Glaciers and moose. Bald eagles catching salmon! Railroad from Seward to anchorage! I hope to cruise the inside passage with my sister one day!
Jason, I know you love your music so to pronounce the name of the river at the McKinley resort, think of the old Steam song - Na Na Na Na Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye.
Me thinks these two should be hosting Alaska tours. They are the best!!!
Remember with ceiling fans there is one direction for Summer and the opposite direction for Winter:
Ceiling fan direction in the winter should be clockwise, and the fan should run at the lowest speed. This pulls cool air up toward the ceiling, which in turn displaces the warm air that rises and collects near the ceiling.
A clockwise ceiling fan direction for high ceilings is especially important in winter. It moves the warmer air trapped at the very top of the room down. The air flows toward the floor and along the walls. This makes the room feel warmer, allowing you to lower the thermostat.
The low speed prevents any drafty “wind chill” and keeps the airflow steady and consistent. When standing under the fan, look up and double-check that the blades are rotating in a clockwise direction.
We did this trip last August. We rented a Turo car and spent two days in Seward/Kenai before starting the land tour. But, Dawson City was our favorite place! We rented a car there also and went to Tombstone Territorial Park, plus many of the local sites. We became great friends with all 30 of the folks on our tour. Hope you joined the Sourtoe Club! Have a great time!
My parents saw to it that we kids were well traveled. (49 states and 8 foreign countries). When I was 10, six of us squeezed into a sedan, pulling a Winnebago trailer and trekked up thru Canada via the "Alaskan Highway" and into Alaska. Back then, all that Highway was gravel. Today, I believe it is all paved. We did Anchorage, Fairbanks, White Horse, various glaciers, Dawson Creek, went panning for gold (and got some).
And of course, Mount McKinley, which is now called Denali.
On my bucket list is to see Alaska via a cruise vantage point.
I remember the sun being out at 11pm at night and mother taking pictures without a flash.
The wildlife was amazing.
You were a lucky kid!!
Alaska has been our favorite of all 29 cruises along with our 10 day transpacific Hawaiian cruise. Always wanted to do the train with one but not enough $$. We're looking forward to our third Alaska soon. This was great ya'll!
Thank you so much for sharing this trip with us. it brings back wonderful memories for me, having travelled not once, but twice, from Australia to Canada, to do this amazing trip to and through Alaska in 2005 and 2014. Denali has certainly changed since then. there was no Denali Square back then, so loved seeing this new addition. Look forward to sharing the rest of your journey. Once again, thank you. 💖💖💖💖💖💖
Denali Square is at the McKinley Chalet Resort. It is such a beautiful area!!!!
Coooool, I didn't know cruise tours were even a thing. Looks like a great way to see Alaska.
It is! The round trip cruise is great but the land tour is next level 👍
@@EECCTravels Thanks for posting this. Alaska is definitely on the bucket list. Expands the options.
Been there done that😊 Brings back great memories. We had a 7 days cruise then the land tour end at Fairbanks. Really enjoyed the train from Seward to Anchorage and then up to Denali. Very grand.
I want a vlog of Jason making the French Onion Soup! Great vlog so far.
Love you guys thank you for all your lovely vlogs , nice to see your passion for good food
Love this video. It brought my memories of our trip to Denali with HAL. We cruised first then land tour in September. Yours is better, tour first, then cruise. In Sept., we saw Northern Lights.
We just got back at the beginning of June from Alaska but watching this makes me ready to go back !
I never get tired of the beauty of Alaska!
I really enjoye the calming music. You play while looking at the mountains and scenery.
I've been 4 times on the HAL tour and love it. Jason, once again your videography is on point!!!! Have a great trip can't wait for the next vlog...👍😁❤️❤️❤️
So typical of a man! Jason gets more handsome as he ages. You two make the cutest couple. I think your compatibility factor is off the charts. Always a fun day no matter where you go or what you do. Goals!! Oh, btw Alaska looks beautiful and the Denali lodge you stayed at - I want to live there 😅
Enjoying your video. Brings back memories of my first trip to Alaska, which was a cruise tour with NCL. Same train, same lodge. One of the best trips I have been on
I really like Alaska when I went. My family did an Alaskan railroad tour when we went and got to see lots of wildlife.
Thanks for taking us along with you. I have to add this to our bucket list. Enjoy
Yes!! Absolutely plan on doing this one day!
Loved your vlog thanks for sharing 🙏🇬🇧♥️
14:30 My first attempt to make french onion soup I went way too long on the onions and they all broke down to pretty much nothing lol Still tasted good, but silver lining was I realized I had almost made onion jam, which I tried making next and it was insanely good. If you're going through the trouble of caramelizing all those pounds of onions, it's easy to split them up and make a batch of soup and jam at the same time.
This is so fun. I did a cruise tour with Princess many years ago. We stayed at the lodge there. I need to get back there. Probably won't be thiis season, hopefully next year. Jason , I make french onion soup about twice a month, usually in the cooler weather. Thank you for sharing this adventure!
Definitely go back!!!
When we did our trip to Alaska about 10yrs ago. Our servers on the train were from kansas and so were we. That was really cool.
Production value has always been solid, but you guys are really taking it up a notch! Awesome!!
They blatantly trespassed the Alaska RR property at Beluga Point.
So fun!! Thanks for sharing
Thank you for sharing this with me. Love it.
What an awesome spectacular journey!
Awesome video and trip. Can’t wait to see more
I did this way back in '09! But going southbound.
Gorgeous. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful. Enjoy and looking forward to seeing more!
Love watching you two. Watching Denali and all of Alaska makes me want to go back. I love it there, so much beauty.
Everything is picturesque! Great video!
So true! Alaska is beautiful!
We did an 11 night road tour of Alaska in late summer 2021 after multiple AK cruises were cancelled and I had a great time. We went from Anchorage down to Seward then back through Anchorage up to Palmer. We then drove up to Denali and then to Fairbanks and flew into the the Artic Circle and then drove back to Fairbanks. We drove back to Anchorage from Fairbanks, but took a different route back which led us to drive along Alaska Highway 1, which was possibly the prettiest drive I've ever done. As much as I enjoyed Denali the coastal areas really resonated with me more than the interior. Hiking to the top of Exit Glacier to view the ice fields by Seward and then the boat tour to get next to a glacier was a highlight of the trip for me.
I'm going back for a southbound cruise next year and will finally get to go fishing in AK.
This trip sounds amazing!!
🌲 Enjoy! I live in Anchorage. Been awhile since I’ve done the train rides (Princess and her lodges) and I agree, it’s beautiful here. For now I’ll live through you. Fun! ⚓️🫎🦅🐻🌤️🧥
Would love to see a separate video explaining the things to know about booking cruise tours!
We will have a review video at the end of the series 👍
Imagine being up Ship Creek without a paddle. LOL
So cool! My hubby and I will be doing a Princess Cruise Tour in September! Thanks for showing where we will be at and what to expect!
Well I’m watching this in Las Vegas on July 10th, 2023. I can definitely feel that fire heat 😂
It is COOOLD in Denali. :) My Son in law lived in Fairbanks as a child.
Yes! It was quite chilly 🥶
This brought back warm memories of our Princess cruisetour in September. It was excellent from start to finish. Incredible scenery and the freshest air. Loved every minute!
This looks amazing! Definitely on my bucket list! Thanks for sharing.
That food looked amazing!
I did the cruise tour a number of years ago. Amazing, stunning, breathtaking and all that!
You need to go across Canada in your RV to Alaska. In Alaska you can overnight in any of the spaces next to the highway if you don‘t want to stay in a campground
It’s on our list! I would LOVE to do this!!
Can't get over all the snow!!!
Breathe taking
Just love all of your travels
Awe thank you 😊
We lived for cloudy days in the summer. Trying to get toddlers to bed in the summer was a nightmare even with blackout curtains.
Love all your videos
Awe thank you 😊
It's great to see you two having so much fun in my old stomping grounds. :)
The source of the Nenana River is the Nenana Glacier up in the mountains. And as an aside, Seward is pronounced SOO-ward. :)
Our first Alaska cruise was 6/11-6/18 and then we did land portion on our own. We have been missing everything about Alaska so your video is very welcome. Can’t wait to see more!
I wish there was something more than a like button, cause I love this video! I’m a born and raised Alaskan, and I just love seeing you both enjoying yourselves here.
In AK, whenever anyone you even remotely know wants to visit Alaska, you get contacted about recommendations.
We always recommend the train to Denali and the train to Seward. You avoid the crowds and see some amazing sights. While at Denali, take the bus tour as far into the park as it goes (currently limited to 35 miles due to a landslide that took out a bridge). While at Seward, take a Resurrection Bay boat tour to see some amazing things and do some whale watching,
We never recommend cruises. They’re convenient if you’re visiting the southeast panhandle, but it’s no where near as fun as being on your own. Alaska should be experienced, not viewed from a distance.
Well done video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Stunning start to the trip. Never been to Denali. Outstanding info
Love this area! Went river rafting right behind you and had so much fun!!
Great video ❤❤❤❤
Yall are so cute, Love your passion for traveling! ❤
Excellent video. We did a similar land sea tour with NCL july 2022 on the NCL Encore! It was Phenominal!!
Watching your video makes me want to go back to Denali. We stayed at the Princess Lodge, but we were on a ground trip with the San Diego Zoo. I can't wait to see your other videos from your Alaska trip.
Love love love Alaska content!! We need to explore more
Awe thank you!! Alaska is so beautiful!!
Really great video!
I like to kick my feet up, eat some snacks and watch my daily dose of EECC travels❤
Awe thank you 😊
great video guys love it make me want to visit this places
Wow stunning landscape and great vlog, love following your adventures and showing us Alaska. Not sure fund's would run to a trip like this but certainly a cruise to Alaska is on the to do list, looking forward to this series 🙂
How fun to find your channel...have fun so glad to join you✨
So many youtubers are going to Alaska and I kind of love it. So different then the normal.
This is our third trip and will not be the last!
OK Jason, we look forward to a video when you get home as you make your first French Onion Soup. 😉 I am someone who likes to cook also and have never made it either. So I was inspired as well! This trip looks incredible!
OMG We've never been to Alaska! But you guys make me want to go!!! Looks absolutely beautiful!! Love watching your videos, they are so informative.
I’m just impressed y’all can blog at 22:00 (10pm) coherently. I’m in bed at 20:30 (8pm).
This was one of the most fun Alaska travel videos I have watched! I felt like I was right there on the train ride with you,as well as in the lodge. Your video has surely made me want to try a land cruise/ land tour - though I have been on a cruise to Alaska several times.
Hey guys. The views are so beautiful out there in Alaska. I love your channel, and I love your energy. Uhrah, semper Fi.
Thank you so much!
Was this filmed recently? Love it.
This was the first week of June.
This a place you need to come to in Ellie, you passed thru Talkeetna on the train ride but you need to return there and spend some time there on a future visit.I traveled to Alaska the first two weeks of June and rented a class C in Anchorage and traveled to Denali, Seward and Homer.
I would LOVE to do this!!
WOW very excited to follow this journey! Hope you get to taste some moose meatloaf, OMG melt in your mouth! Your suite looks so amazing and comfy and the train ride entertaining as well. It looks like maybe you were in Alaska in May/June based on the surroundings. Hoping you provide more of the details on how one would find one of these cruise/land tours etc. Sooooo looking forward to more in this series! Alaska is a perfect example of God's beauty!
It was the first week in June. I would be happy to provide details on a cruise tour if you are interested. My email is travel@eecctravels.com.
I think the next time we go to Alaska, we have to do a cruise tour. The sights, the train and the lodge look so beautiful! We absolutely LOVED our cruise to Alaska and we are already jonesing to get back there.
We are looking to do a cruise tour in 2024, trying to decide on Princess or HAL.
Great video. We were just in Denali last weekend and stayed at the McKinley Chalet too. Our room was at the bottom of the hill. It was definitely a workout each time.
It was so beautiful and cozy.
Those blackout curtains were amazing. It was so dark in our room.
Great quality video. I love how you put it together. New subscriber.
Having your luggage meet you is pretty awesome! On some other Princess Cruise people’s videos, their luggage didn’t show until late at night and Guest Services was basically unbothered. 😂
OMG, I wish I would have known you were in Dallas. I work for a limo company and would of been so happy to give you guys a ride for a bite to eat. Maybe next time!
Thanks!
We have relatives in Anchorage been there several times.
If you ever get the motor home up there drive up to Hurricane Gulch and spend the night its halfway between Anchorage and Denali. We camped there in late September first time I saw the northern Lights.
Your video has brought back so many memories.
Thank you.
That would be amazing!! RVing in Alaska is definitely on my list!
Its going to be nice too see Alaska from someone from Louisiana because I from Louisiana I will not get too go to Alaska ❤😊
Oh I hope you are able to do a trip like this one day. It’s magical!!
I did that trip backwards (cruise first) in 2019 with my parents and a nephew. It was amazing even tho we never saw Denali.
Hope you guys film this whole trip
Of course we did!!
Thank y’all so much for sharing with us. Y’all make it still like we are right there with you
At the end of your cruise do you end up back in Anchorage and fly back to Dallas from there?
@@dianealvarado6219 no this one ends in Vancouver.
❤❤❤
You are the only youtuber I know that does a playlist on the Alaskan Cruise Tour.
Oh cool! This is really the way to experience Alaska! You only see such a small portion on a roundtrip cruise. Are you taking a cruise tour?
Thinking about it@@EECCTravels
Start learning everyone get on the plane in the first 20 spots, don't rest don't go eat don't say we'll they will call 3 times for us on a flight, train, ship. Guess what everything is overbooked. First come first served. You want on a flight get noticed, get that luggage tagged, get the boarding pass approved. Get the tsa finished. Yakking in a lounge or at a seat playing on your phone can get your whole group bumped. Your goal to travel successfully is to listen to the tips she gives you about packing, add-ons, storing baggage, and get your a@#@@ to the gate counter. Some things take 20 min to figure out. Don't be pushy but if you think you can be lax and accommodating it's not 2015 you will be left behind. Travel I'd fierce and nothing is guaranteed they will bump you from a flight and no they won't give you hotels, a voucher for lazy attitude, and yes keep your crappy attitude shut. They can ban you from the boat, train, plane for drunk, your demeanor, being lazy, or asking for so much they can never give Perks. So stop asking for them. Be the polite yes sir, yes mam. Get me on this please. Don't forget strollers, carseats, extra luggage that needs to be tagged and boarded in cargo, and never put your papers in your luggage. Keep every passport, birth cert for kids. Being lazy gets your vacation sent home or bumped. There's at least 20 on standby including staff needing to get back to a point of origin. Those staff like pilots deadheading will take priority over you asap. Get to the counter when the 1st call is set. No joke it's bumping duck and weave while you are traveling. Be aware of new guidelines for sniffing dogs and mirror, searches on board for explosives, fugitives, drugs, stolen items, weapons. Staff will require you to be accommodating to every government official. Mexico, canada, British, Bahamas respect their authority or you are booted. No time to get mouthy that you hate a country. Have a beautiful time safely. They have thousands to care for. Don't be a issue be proactively participating not reactively needing a snickers to keep your mouth shut. Lol its 2023 and it's wild & crowded out there. No one wants to be the first train, flight, or ship to have a major passenger causing issue. So lovely love the AL train such a amazing one to go on. Hope it's amazing eecc
(SOO-urd not Seaward. ❤) You two should be on the Travel Channel.
Oh my God, I am ready to vacation in Anchorage
I plan to add the train ride to my vacation. Thank you for sharing. What month did you travel in. 😊
Thank you for a great explanation of the land portion just added to bucket list curious is it July? We had to cancel our land Cruise tour due to Covid. We substitute Greenland / Canada last a year great sub but so jealous of your trip
I’m super excited for the videos from this cruise! Happy and Safe Travels! 🧡
Love the vlog. I need video instruction how to hookup Netflix to room tv.
Wow! Love it! When did you guys travel in this video?
The first week in June.
FYI your at 1500 ft and those mountains around you are much higher so I would guess that’s where the water in the river is coming from…..just sayin….lol.
We are going on the reverse itinerary the end of August!! Did you guys upgrade your room for Denali?? Your videos have been soooo helpful to us. Thanks again!
Yes, this is the suite upgrade in Denali. Have a great time!!
So as I am watching you guys stroll through the resort I am wondering if bear ever come through the resort area?
Great video. Helped us a lot for our plans this summer. What month of the year did you film this and was it early, mid or late in that month? Thank you for that information.
Do the meals, snacks, drinks come with the train ride?
