Yes, rubbing alcohol can be used externally and you can put any herb in it to infuse. Rubbing alcohol is used in linament, giving muscle rubs, cooling down if you have a fever, etc. The higher the alcohol, the faster the infusion works and the higher concentration of plant content you get into the alcohol. With tinctures you swallow, sometimes I use 190 proof alcohol (Everclear) for very dense plant material like sap, bark, seeds, pods. But that would be overkill for something like nettle leaves or something else very fragile and thin. Same for rubbing alcohol - 70% is fine for fresh veg herbs, but if you have thicker things like sap or bark, seeds, etc you could go to 91%. Or if you wanted to infuse quickly, the 91% will pull out constituents very quickly from your herb so you don't need to wait as long.
I was hooping that was the case. I don't use alcohol internally, but do have some oregano infusing in rubbing alcohol for anything that comes up this summer. Oregano is a powerful herbal. Folks don't know the straight essential oil can burn healthy tissues!@@everythinghomestead9222
@everythinghomestead9222 Hi, Rebekah! Love your channel! I've watched several of your videos and am looking forward to seeing more. Just wondering where you got your training as an herbalist. I'm interested in doing that. Thanks so much! Have a great Christmas!!
I'm 57. When I was 7 years old I was very drawn to herbal meds, so I have started learning since then. By the time I finished nursing school in my early 20's, I was already basically an herbalist and had the best of both worlds... I was self-taught at that point. Since then I have taken numerous courses, most are certificate ones, but some are not. There are some good 'herbal schools' out there and some really bad ones. Most of them are filled with real witches and pagans, who use herbs heavily. So please be careful where you go. There is also a lot of new-age type stuff too which is hard if you're a Christian and trying to learn but they keep bringing in spirituality and how plants feed our souls, etc. So the two I would recommend are The Homegrown Herbalist (HH). He's the best in my opinion, but not as glossy as the Herbal Academy (they cost 3 times the price, more than half their students are witches that openly attack Christians, but have beautiful books and website, etc). HH is a retired veterinarian, he was a vet and a naturopath and still works with his human clients. He's used herbs extensively for 35 years and he has a vast variety of stories to help you understand better... His wife is a midwife and a naturopath as well. He has 4 kids and adopted 11 more, so a total of 15 children he's raised...now he's a happy grandpa. He's Mormon, but compared to all the others online I feel safest in his course. He also doesn't charge an enormous amount for what he offers, other herbal schools charge sooooooo much more... He allows you full access to the school forever, other schools shut you down within a certain amount of time (a year, 2 years). So I would definitely look into him, he's on youtube and you can find links to his school under the free videos he posts. The other one is The Herbal Jedi. He also has an herbal school and is easy to learn from, but he does have a lot of new age type stuff. You pay for each class with him. He has some great free videos too. I would definitely watch as many of the free videos of both of these as you can. You can learn SO MUCH... Herbal medicine is not regulated so honestly, you can learn completely on your own on a very high level instead of going through an herbal school or college. If you need links to either of these youtubers, just let me know ;)
I have never seen redwood tincture for sale online - which is sad because it helps so much. Do you know how to make tinctures? I could send you fresh redwood leaves by priority mail so they get to you before they begin to mold... That's about as good as I know can be done ;) @@socal7044

For a medicine used externally only, could I use rubbing alcohol (especially 91%)?
