The Starlight feels like an important stepping stone for the melee update that came more recently, as it used to be one of few swords that weren't just "Yeah it shoots a beam"
The starlight needs more recognition. I use it in a lot of my playthroughs. The starlight is a lot better than other people think, and I have no clue as to why it is so underrated.
People usually obtain it after either plantera or golem, which is a part of the game where the progression is at its worst. Starlight is extraordinary but there are just better choices. The choices are usually more boring, but people don't seem to care all that much.
It's overshadowed by progression and content, despite this weapon being crazy good, post-plantera progression is extremely fast and has too many content that can overshadow this weapon, especially the other weapons from events. Plus this is true melee, which I think is also an extremely underrated subclass
@@kittens0010 Safety, difficulty of obtaining and reliability are also factors in the strength of a weapon, not just raw dpr against a target dummy...
@@kittens0010 Yes. It has crazy base damage etc. But the range is meh, and it's really not a reliable choice, except if you're playing with godmode enabled.
I actually kinda love this weapon, simply because is so satisfying to use, but it's completely useless if you aren't going full melee, because you need that tanking to be able to use it and not die.
Full tanking is completely unnecessary. The better option is simply to know when it’s safe to use starlight, and use one of melees many safer weapons when it isn’t. Against moon lord for example, the left/right hands are starlight-safe until they start looking at you, at which point you should distance and jerk your movement to dodge.
As a long time fan of the Arkhalis, this is definitively something I'd use if I ever came across it. I just love the endless barrage of attacks weapons like these can do.
The Starlight epitomizes the issue with Terraria Melee to me: It's only usable if melee is the one thing you aren't. The damage is amazing, but the fact that is actually locked to something vaguely resembling melee range massively lowers its viability in actual gameplay, to the point that most players will never bother with it. Even then, calling the sword that hits things about four body lengths away 'melee' is a stretch, but compared to the Terrablade....
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG I love this weapon so much the way it just chews through health bars zenith style but cooler. It genuinely makes me want to cry tears of joy whenever I see someone using this weapon that can even shread the moon lord down to its last atom just makes me so happy
With how much I have EoL down to a science, I pretty much always go for the starlight whenever I do melee, it only really struggles against the vortex pillar and can handle most other pillar enemies handily, plus it’s just a super fun weapon to have on hand for when you’re doing stuff around the world, it’s fast, consistent, and can handle any bats or other cave annoyances in record time
Ok let's see 1. A cool side boss fight 2. My favorite type of melee weapon EVER (a Rapier) 3. Rainbows make everything at least 3x cooler Yes, I'm going to farm the starlight
Starlight was my holy grail weapon in Pure Melee run, literally shreds anything in its path Yes technically it fires a short range projectile but its so short that counts as a Short sword. Plus I remember getting this on the same run just using the Psycho Knife to kill the EoL and afterwards the MoonLord just took 3 attempts to beat with this weapon
Since I often use the witch broom mount for the moon lord fight, I end up almost directly above the top eye when I avoid the laser. It's the perfect opportunity to use the stat light. I sometimes use it on the other 2 eyes too
As an almost exclusively melee player, i always go for it. It's an amazing weapon for anytime other than bosses. Shreds all events and is also great against the pillars. It's just awesome.
the starlight is literally my fav weapon in the game and it's a must have for me cuz i do a lot of events like frost and pumpkin moon and OOA, and the starlight just absolutely shreds through them like better. it's nice to see it finally get some love
A little story, i had a crossplay server to play with my friend, but it was laggy as hell, so when we tried to get away from moonlord, his dmg hitbox was there, but the hp hitbox wasn't, so we had to stay near him all the time, that's when we remember the starlight, and tell you what, it made the fight SO much easier
that sword carried me through some post moonlord calamity bosses and i really enjoy playing with it when im doing melee class and i think doing empress of light is a pretty fare challenge, everyone should try it out its really fun to play with
i dont even play terraria anymore but i feel like a kid when this guy uploads😭 back to those glorious times when i used to youtube this google that everything related to terraria. love these videos❤
This thing and the Horseman's Blade were a godsend for my true melee run I did not too long ago. The grind did take a while since I was sort of locked with the True Excalibur, but after that it was an easy run.
The best thing about it is that thanks to its insanely high hit rate (similar to fetid baghnakhs) you don't need a high damage/crit setup to delete enemies. You can go for a tanky setup, and if you want you could swap an accessory for the soaring insignia. With some decent wings you basically have no more need for flying mounts for aireal mobility (except for if you want to stay at a certain height, then a mount would be easier)
The starlight is another one of those true melee weapons that people say that you will just die but it will kill everything before you die. This has happened to me in calamity before with the mushroom claw from crabulon where no one cares about them, but it can shred skeletron in about 20 seconds with the bee keeper on death mode.
The Starlight feels like an upgrade to the Terragrim tbh, they both fill that same niche of “extreme dps up close, but no range” at their parts of the game
For me the Starlight is a must for melee since there are a ton of post-Plantera farms where having absurd single target DPS makes farming much more effective. I try my best to have both a starlight for single target DPS as well as a Flying Dragon/Terra blade for ranged engagements.
It's such a fun weapon to use and I wish there was more for it to make it better in some way (Things like Calamity's Evasion Scarf that grants a reliable dodge and helps true melee weapons, even though technically Starlight is a projectile, it's basically a true melee weapon) since its strength is its sheer DPS but you can't build into that without risking your life, and building for bulk detracts the whole reason you'd use Starlight in the first place
I absolutely love this weapon and have been trying to find ways to use it ever since I first tried it. I am kinda sad though that the way the “projectiles” function prevents it from being benefitted by melee speed bonuses, which I think would be fantastic with this weapon. Either way, a weapon I love using even if said uses are limited.
When I played 1.4 for the first time with some friends and one of them who was doing a melee setup got the starlight, I asked to try it out and it was so powerful that all 4 of us, all with different classes, got it and just beat the Old One’s Army by standing in front of the portals and deleting everything that came out, 2 of us on each side. That plus sentries and minions meant we really only had to try when Betsy finally came. It’s an awesome weapon!
I know the Frost Moon at the beginning of the video was just to introduce the topic, but the Starlight is really good against it and other events. I used it in a normal mode playthrough and it was worth the grind. Idk about Expert or Master, but I would assume it would have the same benefits
The higher the difficulty level, the fewer possibilities for tanking. If on the classic mode you can tank, on the legendary mode (MMFTW or MMGFB) you will die, and die quickly, very quickly.

1.4 weapons and bosses was game changing experience, just look at empress of light and the rest of bosses, i hope devs will remake a chunk of content so it will fit this cool style
Calamity really helped me appreciate true melee builds. I know the Starlight isn't technically a true melee weapon, but the style of it paired with its ludicrous damage makes it very fun to use.
The starlight was one of the first drops I got when I beat the empress of light, and my god it dishes out a load of damage. I had a lot of fun with this weapon despite its close range drawback as it shreds through enemies like butter. Wouldn’t recommend it for fast moving or late game bosses, just for event related stuff
Am I crazy for thinking that the empress is much easier than Fishron? Like everyone talks like she's the most impossible thing but pre moon lord I struggle with Fishron and not with her... am I just crazy, insane possibly?
The Starlight is an amazing side weapon, everything that dares to get in close will get almost instantly vaporized. My go to weapons are; a "side weapon" that has specific uses but shines in that role, a "main" weapon with good range and a "support weapon" that helps with damage or survivability.
Just recently I did a full melee run and decided to not use the Terra blade nor pillar weapons for Moon Lord. The starlight was actually what I used for the first phase of moon lord, even if it did take a while (beetle armor is very bulky).
Feels like something you would keep in your back pocket just in case something gets too close. If you're playing multiplayer and are a tank however this thing would probably shine just as bright as it's name implies.
It's not for everyone, but it is nice to have true melee alternatives in the game (Horseman's Blade is another one)... Who knows, maybe sometimes you'll want to play a little riskier, for the pure adrenaline...
i would probably use it for like really annoying events like blood moons or pirates or like idk. It shreds hoards in a few seconds for high hp events like the martian raid, which is pretty impressive due to how you can get it post plantera
Starlight is my favourite weapon, I just pair it with something that has good range and then use it to wipe anything that comes within its range off the face of the earth. Also Empress has a weapon I like for every class so I almost always fight her. Eventually I got enough practice where she isn’t too hard, so now I just get the cool rainbow weapons every single time
Starkight is really good as a side weapon for other classes. It is just good right out the box and is designed around close quarters, letting you just get rid of any low level enemies that try to harass you. Yeah, you'll have other class-slecific weapons for that niche. It's just more fun to use another class' weapon for the side stuff.
Starlight is a no brainer upgrade for after plantera to make farming events way easier because if enemies get close to me they evaporate shortly after.
It's a rapier! I love rapiers, the classiest way to stab something to death. Plus, it's also kinda an upgrade to arkhalis, which is another super cool weapon!
