Good morning- good afternoon and good night I don't know if you've covered this yet or not, or if you still take suggestions, but you should check out Children of the Sun by Billy Thorpe
George Harrison was a dear friend of the International Society of Krishna Conciusness and had a direct Relationship, as friend, with the Founder of the Movement, by the name, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. 🙏💐🙏💐🙏💐🙏 George Harrison was spending the Bhaktivedanta Manor, in Herfortshire (England), to the Hare Krishna Movement. Until today, this Place became a famous spiritual and touristic Hotspot, a Location, nearby London. For everyone who likes deep spiritual Culture and Knowledge, should come, to visit this extraordinary Place. 🙏💐🙏💐🙏💐🙏💐🙏
One of George Harrison's quotes when asked about the names of the Lord & God he used in his lyrics of this song, he replied, *“It does not matter what you call Him, just call Him” That quote helped me* ❤ ❤ ❤
It’s often forgotten that he wrote this song for his dear friend, the deeply Christian Billy Preston (whose version only has one Hare Krishna among the Hallelujahs). Billy Preston wrote You Are So Beautiful for his mother and many other songs.
George was raised Catholic. He became interested in Eastern spiritualism and meditation around 1966. He often spoke on his beliefs and wanting to escape the cycle of death and rebirth. Upon his death, Olivia, his wife said that he "lit up the room when he left his body". I love George, miss him still.
Thanks for the info. You might want to change '66' to '1966', as it's easy to get confused reading the sentence and think that he got interested at age 66 (if you knew nothing at all about George Harrison).
Not Singing about Jesus: Hi, My Sweet Lord sounds good, but he's not singing about Jesus, but a false god, Harrison wrote "My Sweet Lord" in praise of the Hindu god Krishna, at the end when he says My sweet Lord, he says Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Harrison was in false religion, he wasn't singing about the Lord Jesus, but to his false god Krishna,
I'm going on 70 years old. The day I heard a classmate singing this song my 10th grade homeroom class, I was struck, covered in goosebumps. I don't know what it was, or what happened, but I will remember that day as if it was yesterday. Later in life I came across a copy of the "Bhagavad Gita, AS IT IS," which I later came to find out was the same translation that Harrison studied. There are two types of religion in the world: 1.) Prophecy: Islam, Christianity and Judaism 2.) Wisdom: Vedic Scriptures, Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, etc. The Bhagavad Gita mentions God's name on every page, and speaks of 'spirit soul' to great extent, using scientific and philosophical analogies, etc. I have yet to become famous and powerful, but I am still grateful on how studying the above song & book changed my life for the positive. I still get goosebumps and well up with tears almost every time I hear this song. Thank you.
George Harrison came from working class backround and was first of his family to get into grammar school, equivalent to modern day high school / secondary school. He found Indian religion around 1966 and started seriously study sitar. However he quit rehearsing around 1969 after the realisation that to fully understand Indian music would take years, pretty much the way Harrison himself started guitar in his teens. The master of the sitar, Ravi Shankar who taught Harrison has stated that Harrison showed true wisdom in it.
Billy Preston's live My Sweet Lord tribute to George Harrison is a must see / listen Jamel. All kinds of superstars involved including Georges' son. goose bump alert! The song is actually addicting 😁 but I could think of much worse stuff to be addicted to.
I love that version of My Sweet Lord too! It’s incredible to watch the other brilliant artists performing this song, some of whom are no longer with us too.
His first solo album, ‘All Things Must Pass’, was recorded mostly at George’s huge mansion. People were everywhere. This song was a private prayer, but since the house was full of people for weeks, someone heard him playing and singing it and talked him into recording it. He was shocked when it went to #1.
George Will Always Be My Favorite Beatle!! Great Musician!! 👍💯♥️♥️♥️ and Not a HeadCase like Most Musicians! 🤪 Traveling Willburys....Best Super Group of All Time!!! Miss Those Guys...RIP 💔🥀😢
I agree about Harrison being the best of the Beatles, certainly as a genuine man. The others may each have had their strengths, but George seemed to be the one that you would have wanted to know as a friend, not just as a pop star. And the Wilburys were a great star band, sadly cut short by the premature death of Roy Orbison, another great musician and gentle soul, who had one of the most amazing singing voices.
Good on you for reviewing the original mix as released in 1970. Others have reacted to the very dry 2000's mix, which is historically incorrect. This version as played by you has all the special elements that made it such a revelation and sensation on a.m. radio in 1970.
George Harrison came to realize that fame and money wasn’t the most important thing. Like all people he wasn’t perfect. But he was always trying to understand why we’re here. 🤔 I heard that he is dying words were Love one another
He INVENTED the concept of the mega concert that was the model for "Farm Aid", "Concert for Aid"-- The Concert for Bangladesh :live album and film generating and estimated $12 million sent to Bangladesh. Sales of the live album and DVD release of the film continue to benefit the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF.
It was said that John was the “Mind” - Philosophical, Paul was the Heart - Love songs, George was the Spirit, he studied many religions, including Hindu.
If so, then Ringo served as the anchor, keeping the rest grounded and not taking it all too seriously. Alternately, I've read of a theory that for an ensemble cast, one featuring a father type, and a mother/priest/conscience, plus a problem-solving child and a comedic/creative child works best, with the "child" roles being capable of being filled by various characters. The example they used was Star Trek, with Kirk and McCoy filling the mother/father role, and Spock mostly filling the problem solver role and Chekhov the comedy, but Scotty could play either child role, too. I don't fully buy that, but that theory might hint at how perception back then shaped folks' view of their "roles". My 2 cents, and yes, I know, the "theory" I cited doesn't qualify as an actual science theory, but such is the state of the language that I need to qualify that. *sigh*
George always struck me as the most spiritual of the Beatles. They all went through the then-trendy eastern spirituality and philosophy phase in the 1960s, but I don't really think it was anything more than an experimentation for the others, whereas George really seemed to be spiritually motivated and a genuinely gentle soul. Such a shame he died relatively young. His life was cut short after he and his wife were attacked in 1999 in their own home by a mentally ill man. Although Harrison officially died of cancer, there's a general consensus among those that knew him that the traumatic effects of the attack - when he was stabbed multiple times, suffered a punctured lung and nearly died - left him much weaker and caused a relapse, leading to return of the cancer he had previously fought off. He died less than two years after the attack, at only 58.

All of the Beatles got imo Eastern religions in the mid to lat 60s, but George took it very seriously. He was a pretty introspective man. My favorite Beatle.
You were born too late; there was SO much brilliant music that you missed growing up! On the plus side, we get to see you re-discovering these lovely songs, and watch you experience it for the first time! Love you, Jamal- keep on being a good human!

First time I heard this song was on KFRC in the San Francisco bay area. Regardless of ones faith everyone could relate to the love he spoke about. The love for humanity is what I heard. I was just a child.
Accidentally here. I like your hoody message and your presentation. So good to see young guys spend time on "old" stuff, that remains young. The late great George Harrison, never forgotten.
🎉The Beatles webt over to India in the 60s and studied and learbed meditation with the Guru's and learned how to play the sitar with Ravi Shankar. Did concerts with him in the US and all over. George seemed to be the one most affected by what they learned over there and then Paul was 2nd most affected. This all brings me back to Jr. HIGH. Thanks for doing this song.
G. Harrison wrote this song AFTER he visits India with the other members of the Beatles, getting in touch with one local spiritual man spending time together and listening to what he had to say. George and all the mentioned members went solo so this is what he created as an artist and share to those who like music.
The other three Beatles decided that the " local spiritual man" (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi) was a fraud and a sexual predator. The John Lennon song "Sexy Sadie" was written about him. The 'humble' yogi left $300 million and 12,000 acres of land in his will.
I think when artist get so rich and famous, they realize that doesn't actually bring happiness and fulfillment. I love how he goes through all those chants as if to say "whatever you want to call that spirit, it's all the same thing. Or at least the same goal
George did the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971 when it was unheard of, to raise international awareness of, and fund relief for refugees from East Pakistan...
George Harrison was raised Catholic but discovered eastern spirituality in the 1960's. "My Sweet Lord" is a song that expresses his desire to really know and see God while in the creation. Another great spiritual song by Harrison is "Awaiting On You All".
George was found guilty of "Subconscious Plagiarism" in Court, as "My Sweet Lord" is extremely similar to the Ronnie Mack Classic "He's so fine". That doesn't take anything away from the fact that this song is SO ICONIC!
George found and loved Hindu Philosophy and was a devotee of Krishna until he died, but was not truly a member of ISKCON [International Society of Krishna Consciousness] tho he did fund a beautiful book they offer. This song is so beautiful, I remember singing along with my mother when this was in heavy rotation on the FM [I was 4] It was so requested that we could listen on one station and switch to another and hear it again for two hours! Thank you George, and Jamal!
George Harrison was just as good by himself as he was when he was with the Beatles God knows that he has a real music artist in his heaven and multiverse and I can’t wait to get there and jam out with all the greats that he created and kept him for the world and for himself yeah man !!!!!
Jamel you hit it right on the nail that's what Harrison said himself. In Short Jamel he wanted to be normal and not looked at like he's any better than anyone else. He got into nature and was taught to appreciate the beautiful little things in life. Paul McCartney says to this day he has a tree that George gifted him from his garden.
Have missed you Jamel! I appreciate their solo careers more than The Beatles. Even Ringo had some great singles, yes with George's help... It Don't Come Easy, Photograph... George is my favorite, and Ringo is number 2. I believe he was the heart of the band and kept them together.. Nice to see you hon. 💜
On the Nov. '70 45 RPM record of 'My Sweet Lord" it also had a great tune on the flipside named "Isn't It A Pity." You'll find this song on his greatest hits LP/CD's.
My first “favorite song”. I was about 6. My brothers introduced me to the Beatles when I was about 5. Right when they broke up. I remember the pic of George Harrison on the single wrapper and I was like no, that’s not George. I had only seen him as the young mop top, not the neared “hippy.” Listened to it over and over and over like only a young person can. Decades later I know he was searching out god in the Buddhist (Hindu) way. Pray he found Christ before he died. Great great song
I believe George became a Hare Krishna. He says Hare Krishna at the end of the song but of course we can all interpret and apply the song to our own faith.
His son Dhani Harrison is making great music now and toured with ELO a couple years ago. Saw it, what a great concert. Good to see you back, my friend.
I saw George Harrison, Ringo and Paul in concert, 3 great concerts. I wish I had the opportunity to have seen John Lennon perform, all of the Beatles were so fantastic together and solo. George and Ravi Shankar performed together, it was just amazing the guitar and sitar blend. I consider myself blessed to have witnessed his concert.
I think he’s exploring how multiple religion explore God and how it doesn’t matter how you connect with Him.. how religions are unimportant..it’s the relationship with Lord, however you do it, that’s important.
One of my all time favourite songs, of which many of them are George's songs, which i try to play from time to time, to keep his spirit alive. George adopted Hare Krisna because it echoed his feeling, of preaching peace and harmony, kindness to fellow people, and that's how he lived his life.
I was 12 years old when this song was released (1970) and I loved it from the first time I heard it. I’m 66 years old now and it’s still my #1 go-to song. I so wanted to have it played at my husband’s memorial service but wasn’t able to. Whenever I listen to this song I think of my husband and I pray he’s in a better place and having fun…until I get there. 💔
George discovered Eastern and Indian philosophy while he was in the Beatles and strove very hard to live by those principles for the rest of his life. He was, and is, my favorite Beatle.
Jamal gets it... I'm 66 year old female, & as much as I'd love to be young again, if I had the chance, no way, the music I grew up on is amazing. Thank you Jamal for getting it & loving it.
He was a member of The Beatles. They all took a break from music and went on a spiritual retreat. George really got more into it. He did a lot of humanitarian work up until his death. PS: check out the Tribute to him where Prince does a solo in While My Guitar gently weeps. 😊
George was brought up Catholic, but I don't think he was particularly religious. Being a rather private person, the massive fame of The Beatles was hard for him to deal with. After being introduced to Ravi Shankar's music by David Crosby, he soon found that the music and the spirituality intertwined, and he found what he was looking for in Eastern religion. As others have mentioned, Billy Preston's version of My Sweet Lord at the Concert For George is excellent - it follows the same basic arrangement, but Billy's gospel influences turn it into a revival meeting at a church in Mississippi.
I saw him live singing this song and he repeated "Hare Krishna', and slowly sang it until he was singing "CHRIST"! He was making the point that the two names are of the same spirit.
It's very hard to not marvel at the output of John and Paul who - let's be fair made some of the best songs in rock aside the time of the Beatles - but this song stands up there with them, after he passed the song was re-released and went to #1 again, not because he had just passed it is truly an exceptional song that deserves just as much praise as Imagine or Band on the Run gets and shows just how exceptional George was.
Have been watching you for a few years. Thanks for being a light and cheering me up sometimes when only music can do that (plus you jamming along). It has been a bit since I checked back in and I see a lot of other material. Jamel, how do I find a playlist/section with only music reactions? Thanks ahead of time :).
George wantet to join the Krishna community as a Vaishnava monk. But his Guru Swami Prabhupada said to him:" No George, your life is music and you can also serve Krishna in this way". Prabhupada would have achieved great fame if George Harrison had joinedhis movement, but he realized that his life's mission was different. Swami Prabhupada was a real Guru. George had contact with the Vaishmava movement throughout his life and when he was dying they chanted the Hare Krishna Mantra for him. RIP George Harrisson
One of the most beautiful faith-based songs that hit the mainstream!! You’ve already reacted to “Jesus is just alright with me” and I’m assuming “Spirit In The Sky”
George was the quite Beatle but his talent was unbelievable his so souly missed. I remember when Paul said he lost little brother the day he passed away. His music lives on🇬🇧
George was raised Catholic, but later became Hindu. That's not particularly the song of George's that I'd have picked...I HIGHLY RECOMMEND "All Things Must Pass", "Isn't it a Pity" and "Beware of Darkness" next!!! So nice to see you do George though!!! He was a musical GENIUS!!!
George was born and probably raised under the English Anglican Church... However, in the late 60's he was introduced to the music and eventually Hindu religion through his interests in eastern music, David Crosby and Roger McGuinn introduced him to the music of Ravi Shankar, and eventually his wife Pattie Boyd encouraged him to attend and go see the Maharishi Mahesh speak in London.... With in the next year or so... not only would George travel to India to learn about the Hindu religion, but others such as Donnovan, Mike Love, Mia Farrow, also in attendance... Eventually other famous people such as Shirley MacLaine and Joe Namath were followers of his.
Glad to see your back Jamal. You have to watch the George Harrison Tribute, they do this so song with Billy Preston on piano and everybody else from Clapton, McCartney, Ringo Starr and many more musician. Welcome back and enjoy!😎👍🎹🥁🎸🎼
He went into Krishna, all those words are names of God and Maestro in sanscrit language, mother tongue of all our languages. Goege was through the spiritual path .Thank you for your beautiful comments.

💯
George Harrison was raised Catholic but discovered eastern spirituality in the 1960's. "My Sweet Lord" is a song that expresses his desire to really know and see God while in the creation. Another great spiritual song by Harrison is "Awaiting On You All".
George was found guilty of "Subconscious Plagiarism" in Court, as "My Sweet Lord" is extremely similar to the Ronnie Mack Classic "He's so fine".
That doesn't take anything away from the fact that this song is SO ICONIC!
“Extremely similar”
No it’s not there are some vague comparisons but this song is all George.
Always loved this song. Even though his Lord isn’t the same as my Lord, I still appreciate it and love this song.
George came to Christ at the end. There's evidence of it! Praise God!!
"God is one but names are many."
Not what he's saying at all.
@@loriholloway5866 Please don't lie.
Same here.
Hey Jamel!
I ADORE George Harrison so much, he has such a Beautiful Spirit.
Me too. I will love him forever ♾️
@@rheailiarome2287 🙏🏻
Your assessment of Harrison's spiritual journey was quite accurate. Beautiful song; one of many excellent ones composed by George. Gone way too soon.
The Frequency of this song always puts me at peace and puts at a higher level. Makes me emotional! Great song!
Always loved this song... wonderful and inspiring not just for one faith, but all of them.
It's good to see music coming back to the channel. I hope you can continue without issue.
It’s an old video, brother
Have missed you Jamel! I appreciate their solo careers more than The Beatles. Even Ringo had some great singles, yes with George's help... It Don't Come Easy, Photograph... George is my favorite, and Ringo is number 2. I believe he was the heart of the band and kept them together.. Nice to see you hon. 💜
My fave of Ringo's was "Your 16" in '73, 74 in HIGH school when I was 16 and had a boyfriend, my first soulmate, who's on the other side now.
Photograph is a great song.
Every member of the Beatles had at least TWO #1 singles on the pop charts as a solo act; that's quite a feat.
I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this song in December 1970.
UM DEUS....Diferentes nomes, diferentes culturas, diferentes pessoas! Simples assim....🙏🙏🏻🙏🏼🙏🏽🙏🏾🙏🏿
He was a Hindu.
His son Dhani Harrison is making great music now and toured with ELO a couple years ago. Saw it, what a great concert.
Good to see you back, my friend.
I've been in love with GEORGE HARRISON since 1964. ❤😎❤
You get it and nailed it. When the Beatles went to India George embraced religion.
Look for Concert for George and Billy Preston singing this part. It is truly breathtaking
George was the quiet spiritual Beatle. This will be on my "going home" playlist.
Some of the background chants are the names of Gods from his beliefs.
I think he’s exploring how multiple religion explore God and how it doesn’t matter how you connect with Him.. how religions are unimportant..it’s the relationship with Lord, however you do it, that’s important.
We were all born with a God shaped hole in our heart. I think he was at peace in the end.He was my favorite Beatle.
next george harrison song request is "ISN'T IT A PITY". for all the good humans out here
man the whole all things must pass album is fire
George discovered Eastern and Indian philosophy while he was in the Beatles and strove very hard to live by those principles for the rest of his life. He was, and is, my favorite Beatle.
What Is Life 🎶❗( and.. Beware of Darkness )
My Sweet Lord is a Hare Krishna , Check the lyric it is singing Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna
I still have the original 45 single of this on vinyl. Beautiful song, beautiful message, beautiful man.
Jamal gets it... I'm 66 year old female, & as much as I'd love to be young again, if I had the chance, no way, the music I grew up on is amazing. Thank you Jamal for getting it & loving it.
I'M 63 same x
He was a member of The Beatles. They all took a break from music and went on a spiritual retreat. George really got more into it. He did a lot of humanitarian work up until his death. PS: check out the Tribute to him where Prince does a solo in While My Guitar gently weeps. 😊
He was also with the Traveling Wilburys
George was brought up Catholic, but I don't think he was particularly religious. Being a rather private person, the massive fame of The Beatles was hard for him to deal with. After being introduced to Ravi Shankar's music by David Crosby, he soon found that the music and the spirituality intertwined, and he found what he was looking for in Eastern religion. As others have mentioned, Billy Preston's version of My Sweet Lord at the Concert For George is excellent - it follows the same basic arrangement, but Billy's gospel influences turn it into a revival meeting at a church in Mississippi.
In 1968 the Beatles went to India for a spiritual retreat and tried Transcendental Meditation. I think that is what inspired this song.
I saw him live singing this song and he repeated "Hare Krishna', and slowly sang it until he was singing "CHRIST"! He was making the point that the two names are of the same spirit.
I just love ❤️ this song. RIP George
You’ve already reacted to “Jesus is just alright with me” and I’m assuming “Spirit In The Sky”
he is not referring to the christian faith
Simply beautiful, it brought tears of emotion to my eyes. 💌
George was always a great soul!! Always mellow!
My Sweet George ❤❤❤🎸🎸🎸
Simply song simply words straight to the point ..makes my heart full
Nothing like being in your car and this comes on!! Beautiful
Beautiful song.
@@gv7217Yes! The only Beatle that was not Protestant 😊
@@gv7217 thanks, was not aware of his early upbringing... thus why I said "probably"... But either way... thank you for the clarification.
Beautiful song. So glad to have you back with the music reactions!
I am also enjoying your return to reactions of classic rock & roll. Jamel, you brought many of us so much joy during the pandemic, by “keeping great music alive” as you used to say. My husband and I watched hundreds of your reaction videos and we still think about you when we hear certain songs (like Lola by the Kinks). ❤️❤️❤️
This is a meditative song, a sunshine of a song.
