Dana Quotable: "Success doesn't mean you have to be done. It means that you've done something." LOVE this!
I had a basket by my fireplace for 3 years that I threw in a box when I moved. I finally went through it using your method and it took 20 minutes. 20 minutes! Well, 3 years and 20 minutes when factoring in Procrastination Math. ;-)

@@GoogleUser-wx8mw Update: I went thru 2 baskets of dog stuff--including stuff from my dog that died in 2012! Embarrassingly, so! [Shaking fist] Procrastination clutter! The "Take it there now" has also been life-changing. I sleep with a mouth guard and you'd think I'd remember it before I got to bed every night. Nope. I’m the queen of containers and boxes of random stuff - every move - you just put it in that box ‘for now’ - every ‘quick clean someone is coming over’ created a Random box🙃now I’m finally at a point for the last 2 -3 months- after closing out my outside storage- to sorting- sigh - it’s time consuming- but ever morning I put boxes on my bed - so I don’t have a choice but to go through them - I don’t move very well - so I can’t always put things right where they belong - I have a box for every room on my bed and sort - end of day all goes back on the floor - I take one box and put the items - say to the bathroom and put them under the sink in a bin - sorting and organizing the rooms comes when I’m all done - I’m lucky that I live alone and can work at my own pace - thankful for motivation from your videos ❤

    My decluttering mottos:
    1. “I’m not THAT poor.” = I don’t need to keep this cheap, imperfect yet useful thing.
    2. “I’m not that person anymore.” I don’t need to keep stuff from my younger days. No one else is going to use nor care for them.
    3. “There are many pretty things in this world.” = I don’t need to keep things even if they are cool or neat looking. There are other pretty things that I will want to take it’s place

I had a box on my bedroom floor for months that had odds and ends crap in it! I finally sat down on Saturday and went through it. About 50% of the papers got shredded and the rest thrown in the trash. I timed myself and it literally only took me 20 minutes to go through it! 🙈 The few remaining papers were tax related. What a great feeling to finally get rid of that box!

You are helping me so much. I have very severe ADD and my house looked like a tip. It was so overwhelming. But using your methods (I also bought your book) I picked away at it in small segments I could tolerate and took before, during and after pics. I wish I hadn't had to wait until I was seventy to discover this. It was the last big thing on my bucket list - the one thing that seemed to invalidate and overshadow all my other life achievements and the one that I actually cared most about - because I just couldn't do it. I cannot thank you enough.

One of my favorite things is when she says, it doesn’t have to be finished.
I was always raised and told to not do things “half way” (and I’m a VERY literal person) and that had held me back from so much in my life.
I get distracted just like she said, and sometimes I don’t even have the mental energy to fully go though one container.
So when she says that, it reaffirms that I have permission to just try and start something.
Some really is better than none.

Thank you for this wonderful demonstration of the principle of decluttering without making a bigger mess. I really thought (unexamined expectation) that I *had* to take everything out in order to start decluttering a space. Now I realize the I am free to declutter only a part at a time, and I can just appreciate my progress at every stage, instead of feeling guilty because things are all over the floor instead of where they used to be or should move to.
After watching this video I started decluttering a container that I have been looking at for actual YEARS. I'm not done with it yet, but it's got about 2/3 less stuff in it now. Again, literally more progress in two weeks than I had made in the preceding four years. I am so grateful.

The rest is box after box of old tax papers add supporting documentation that I haven't touched for 15 years. Yes, I have paid several times over their value. Goal: clear out the storage unit, have a shredding party, sell/donate the furniture. There are only 5 things in there I truly want to keep: my baby rocking chair, my lilac quilt, my aunt's teapot collection, my mom's handmade porcelain dolls, my teenage/college journals.

The older I get, the more I realize that ADHD is the chronic mindset of NOW. If I don't do it RIGHT NOW, it won't get done. If I don't write it down RIGHT NOW, I for sure WILL NOT remember it later. I am SO out of sight, out of mind. I need to apply these principles...take one item and take it where it belongs RIGHT NOW. I always end up sorting into piles on my bed, and inevitably, at least one of those piles won't get 100% handled and turns into a smaller pile somewhere else. Thank you so much! 😘💕❤

Me, too...Dana K. White, where have you been all my life? I grew up in a mom and grandmom hoarding environment, so I inherited the hoarder gene. I collect yarn, books, and kitchen stuff and have paths from front door to hallway to bathroom/bedroom suite and from hallway to my rocker recliner, i.e., the main walkways. My husband and I have way too many clothes, a lot of which are too small, but I need help going through the boxes of clean clothes to weed out donatable items. Then I have to get rid of all the too-small clothes in my dresser drawers. But, I have to declutter the bags abd boxes in front of and along side of my bed. Oh, I don't sleep in the bed; I sleep in by chair in the living room. There's so much dust in the debroom that I have to wear a mask just to be in there since I am allergic to dust, yeasts, and molds.

The "Take it there right now" is absolutely essential. It means that if I have to quit in mid-process, then I am going to come back to something better and not worse than it was. Sooooooo important. In the past, I'd dump everything out and end up with a huge mess because I'd get called away before I could finish. It was paralyzing seeing such a bigger mess. (The Marie Kondo method does not work for me.) I've made so much progress thanks to you, Dana! AND ... I gave myself a rule ... I'm not allowed to add anything to those areas that I've begun working on. That's training me for how to keep things uncluttered. If I get overwhelmed, I sometimes go to a different area and say, "What's trash? What can I donate?" .. and sure enough ... some stuff leaves the house and I see a bare spot on a shelf or floor! (And I am not allowed to put anything else there! ha! I like the empty spots!) I'm not finished, but I feel good about the process and can keep doing a little all the time.

The bonus to the “put it where it belongs right now “ method is that every item you put away is time saved from having to search the entire house for it later! Also, less arguments about who used the items last and what did they do with them. So much less stress in your home that cannot be measured but is priceless!!!

    “I’m not THAT poor.”
This is what I tell myself when telling myself to throw away throngs like hairy brads, bent pins, stretched out hair ties and other less than perfect, yet maybe still useful things.

Dana, I am so glad I found the video where my other mentors were telling us about the course we can buy made by the three of you. Since I was not familiar with you yet I checked your videos out at their urging and found out you and I are alike in sooo many ways! I am of course a new subscriber! I am going to look into buying both your books and I am feeling like I may even purchase the course because it may just be the very tool I need to tackle my cluttered LIFE! I love the way you clean without making a bigger mess! I am pretty sure that I don't start a lot of times because I can't get started and run out of time, energy or both, to complete my task so I don't start. Then it stays that way "YELLING" at me to get it done. Honestly I am being converted by these wonderful videos on youtube that are so helpful in my recovery. I count you as friend, Dana, THANK YOU!

I love the way you work. I love that you use the container method. I love the way you do thrash, then easy stuff. I have only watched half of this video, but I'm all in on your method. I did my clothes closet trying to use your container and hanger method. I ran into a slight problem when I kept finding more hangers. But my closet makes me happy. And I swear that I will not buy any more hangers. Please take this as a huge thank you. You are very much appreciated!

Girl, I have never met anyone who thinks like I do but you are my kindred spirit! I'm reading your book and am the same about time unawareness as well as things like the broccoli on the floor that the dog didn't want (from How to manage you home without using your mind). I call it visual white noise. If someone points it out, I can see it, otherwise it's just background hum.

@@SW-su5ho the container concept is helping. I had to adjust my mindset to limit my container to real ones. A pile on top of a dresser violates the container concept, even if it's in a cute basket. 😳
