      She has to be though. She had to be strong for Prim growing up, and take on the roles of father AND mother. She didn't have time or trust to dwell on love. She had to appear strong going into both the games. She had to be strong for the rebellion. We can't expect her to be emotionally invested in everyone and everything.

      Yeah it's clear the wedding dress turned Mockingjay costume was very much a last open protest by Cinna, one he knew he was going to die for. That's why he left the plans for Katniss's battle suit. Cinna was in on it from the start and cleverly used his designs to help Katniss spark the revolution by knowing exactly what each outfit he put her in would do for her public image. He was not only a brilliant stylist and designer, he was also a master class image manipulator. It was only when Katniss was thrown back into the games that Cinna knew he couldn't be subtle anymore and sacrificed himself with the Mockingjay costume.

      I personally think Effie and Prim started the revolution, I know that sounds crazy but if you here my reasoning you would understand. Effie called Prim's name even though it was very unlikely, it's like she wanted a revolution, then Katniss volunteered for Prim hence making District 12 noticeable by the Capital. Katniss goes into the area scared put ready for what is going to happen and she has a little bit of hope that she can win for Prim's sake she then wins but some people think she defied the Capital by wanting to keep herself and Peeta alive. Then she goes back into the Games, the only reason she is going back in is because Effie reaped Prim's name, then the rebels from 13 rescue Katniss and what is left of 12 after the Capital firebombed it, then she fights for the people of the districts and then watches Prim die and defeated the Capital, while she is mentally disordered.

And Durring the game he ended up at the very edge of the arena where there is a huge cliff and he threw a rock off the edge and a few moments later it came flying back up. So at the very very end when it was down to him and one other girl he had been stabbed and she threw a axe at him and he ducked and it went over the edge of the cliff and so he stayed down and she was too injured to keep moving and a few moments later the axe came flying back up and hit the girl in the head killing her. Honestly, I never saw Gale as a jerk. He made some mistakes, but so did everyone else.
    "Gale killed Prim." No, he helped construct the offensive weapons meant for the ENEMY. Coin was the one who ordered the bombs to be dropped on the Capitol children, he was unaware of the plan.
    "He left Katniss at the end." Neither of them made the effort to see each other because they were preoccupied with other things. And it was Katniss who left him.
    "He was insensitive to others." He saved as many people as he could from District 12. He went back to save Prim during the evacuation. He was the first volunteer on the rescue mission. Gale just isn't the type of person to focus on people individually.
    "He didn't care about Peeta." Brainwashed or not, Gale understood that Peeta was still a major threat to their cause. Of course Katniss and we readers was very empathetic towards Peeta - they were lovers, and we spent the past two books watching their love. Gale may have been harsh towards Peeta, but then again, Gale didn't prioritize saving Peeta like Katniss did.
    Above all, I think Gale was a good addition to the series. No character was perfect, but that's because Collins intended to show what happens to people in a dystopian society. How people become psychotic, radical, emotional, hardened, apathetic, etc. Gale is pretty misunderstood. Sorry for the long rant.

    • @eyapotts
      @eyapotts 4 года назад +49

      I agree to all your points but I still believe he was partly repsonsible for the death of those children. Gale might not have killed Prim, okay I get that. He helped make weapons for 13 . Coin planned the attack on the children. Gale might not know about the attack on the Capitol's children but you're missing one small fact about the bombs/trap.
      The bombs used in the Capitol's children used first wave of bombs that caused minor injuries. The second wave of bombs blasted after medics came to tend the wounded, doubling the people injured and dead.
      Gale innovated the trap using human empathy as its bait and that's just straight up evil. Most traps were intended to catch the weak but Gale planned on using empathy as a weapon - the one of the greatest qualities a human could have. And that I think is the most cruel thing a person could do.

      @@eyapotts totally agree with that. Like I said he did bad things too, I am not denying them but people think that he is totally evil which he isn't. We should also remember that bcz of him atleast some people from 12 were saved. Also he never forced katniss to choose him instead of Gale. For me the element of the Hunger Games story that is most often missed is how Katniss is frequently a pawn throughout the series. She predominantly reacts to the decisions of those around her rather than driving the bigger picture forward on her own cognizance. It is the manipulations and perceptions of those around her who give her power (evidence: the propaganda war), but she rarely seizes it since her motivations are not politics and power - all she wants is to protect those she cares about. She is not a revolutionary by choice, but by necessity. Ironically, we may fall in to the same propaganda trap that District 13 created - in focusing on the strength and heroism of The Mockingjay, we might forget to notice how that symbol is used to exploit Katniss Everdeen.

Something about the books is that Prim was white with blonde hair and blue eyes (said to have her mother's rich-ish blood) while Katniss has the poor, 'seam look' of dark hair and brown skin. There was a lot of segregation/racial commentary in the series. You don't have to be an adult to read books.

So it was When Katniss pulled the Nightlock like Snow said, but if you go to the root of the cause, it was Rue who started it. I don't like that they used the term "jerk." He had valid reasons for behaving the way he did but like others mentioned, and the author herself wrote, he had a fire inside him that wasn't healthy for Katniss. She had a fire inside of her as well and the two of them together only creates what? A bigger fire. Because of that, he would have never let Katniss move on and provide proper closure like Peeta did. Gale wasn't necessarily a bad guy but he wasn't a good one either. Not for Katniss at least. She needs someone like Peeta who's selfless and kind and forgiving and let's her move on from the past instead of keeping her dwelling in the anger of it all.

  • @ellicooper947

    Gale isn’t jerk. If you’d read the books it states that the last time they’d killed a deer it had been ripped apart (people were trying to rip chunks off) when they were taking it to be sold, proving gale was right in the first film, though he could have gone about it a different way. Also, Katniss should have realised what would have happened to her if she’d taken a dead deer through District 12 on the day of the reaping, she would have been punished. Furthermore, in catching fire Gale talks her out of it because their families wouldn’t survive Iin the wild. Prim is too sweet to hunt and Gale’s younger siblings aren’t going to be of much use. It would terrify the younger ones too much, Gale wanted to protect them but within 12. Also, Katniss would have been hinted, as se was the only female victor from 12 and she couldn’t leave Peeta behind either. Finally, in Mockingjay Gale reacts with no sympathy to Peeta because he is viewed as a traitor to the rebels, something most of them thought. But Gale has also proven that he didn’t completely hate Peeta, or lived Katniss enough to volunteer in the mission to rescue Peeta and the victors, showing he isn’t that bad, no matter what you say... btw I’m 13 and I knew all of these things.

Silver Linings Playbook had a real life happy ending (even though they still suffered their mental ilnesses) but THG had no happy ending.... with time Katniss and Peeta got a good life but those lost things will always hurt in some kind of a way.... the only thing they can do is move on and try to live as best as they can..... just like many people who have suffered in life. Well depending on your definition of a child, should you even had read this book? I think it was marketed for a 12(+) audience, and children of that age should understand those themes (and instead of naivety, I would call that oblivious for that age). My definition of a child is 4-10 (after that they are a pre-teen), and in no way would I expect a child of this age to read this book, nor would I encourage it. And anyone older, I would presume that they're either reading it out of interest (in which they would like to understand the concepts presented) or for school (in which they have to understand the concepts presented-or use wiki). Props to you if you're under 10 and read it, but I honestly think you should enjoy your youth instead of watching The Lists videos, not that they don't have informative videos, but you'll regret not doing more in the future. Especially when you get into university, you won't even have time to go out during the weekend, and that is extremely saddening. So enjoy freedom while it lasts

    So Gale is a “Jerk” because he disagrees with Katniss?

    • @annas.2151
      @annas.2151 4 года назад +6

      No he was a jerk for helping Coin, the corrupt president of district 13 with the murder of Katniss's sister Prim because he loved the power and had so much hatred built for the capitol that he would kill thousands of innocent children and medical helpers who were simply trying to help injured children (and these were the people on his side). Also he was insanely jealous and selfish at the fact that Katniss was trying to survive the Hunger Games but his own ego couldn't accept the possibility that she went through some terrible things and had to do things to keep herself alive like faking love with Peeta.
      He didn't even have the right to be jealous as they were never dated and never had a romantic interaction before the games and he suddenly wanted her just because someone else had her. Seems like a jerk to me... doing the wrong things for the right reasons doesn't make it right.

    • @wrkkvikrmvh1023
      @wrkkvikrmvh1023 4 года назад +2

      @@annas.2151 you need to get your facts straight and learn some basic human psychology. First, Gale likely had no knowledge of Coin's plan to use Prim the was she did. If you don't recall, the war was a ways away from over when Katniss went rouge in the Capitol. As far as anyone there knew, Prim was in 13 still becoming a doctor. What I am saying is with Gale out of communication with 13 at the time Coin would have made the decision to deploy Prim, there would be no way for him to know about Coin's plan. On the subject of the bombs that killed Prim, they did not intend on using it on 13's medics, matter of fact it was only talked about in concepts, ones that would be used against the capitol (page 186 of Mockingjay). Even if Gale knew that it may have been used against Prim, he would have likely done everything in his power to stop Prim from being killed because he loves Katniss, and thus to keep her happiness alive, Prim would be alive. What I am saying there is if he knew about it then he would be making the choice to kill Prim, which would be directly hurting Katniss, which is something that people in love with another do not do. On the note of Gale loving Katniss you stated (this is a direct quote with the grammatical errors included) "He didn't even have the right to be jealous as they were never dated and never had a romantic interaction before the games and he suddenly wanted her just because someone else had her." This is just flat out WRONG. Gale had wanted Katniss for more than 6 months BEFORE the games began. On page 199 of Mockingjay, Katniss asks Gale "So when did I become so special? When they carted me off to the Capitol?" and Gale responds with "No. About six months before that. Right after New Year's. We were in the Hob, eating some slop of Greasy Sae's. And Darius was teasing you about trading a rabbit for one of his kisses. And I realized... I minded." This proves that Gale had been loving Katniss for quite some time before the games even began, and thus before she was with someone else, which establishes reasonable grounds for jealousy and resentment towards Peeta. Again, that is simple psychology, and doesn't make one a jerk. There are more points that I can make towards Gale not being a jerk, but this post is getting long and it's almost 4 a.m. where I live. If you decide to argue this further, please get your facts straight and use evidence to make an actual argument.

      @@wrkkvikrmvh1023 even if Gale didn't know Prim was going to die, he still was ok with hundreds of innocent people dying to the bomb. Also, in the books, he wasn't even sorry about Prim dying.
      Gale confessed his love for Katniss even when he thought Katniss wasn't faking being in love with Peeta.
      Katniss and Gale had some romantic interaction, but they had never dated, and when Gale said the idea that Katniss and him would have kids together, Katniss immediately got scared, never wanting to have kids or get married. There are some points of Gale being selfless (saving Peeta) but overall he was a big jerk.

      @@Anita-nu2uo I believe with Gale's mindset he wpuld be ok if hundreds of innocent CAPITOL (I only capitalized that because I dont know how to italicize text on a phone) citizens died because of his rage towards the capitol (I dont have the books in front of me currently, but if I did I would cite his outburst in Distict 2 when talking about his plan to take down the Nut).
      After he was taken by Peacekeepers in the Capitol, there was no mention of him until it said he was mopping up Peacekeepers in a district (District 2 I believe), so there is no way to know if he felt bad or not about Prim dieing.
      I mentioned where Gale confessed his feelings for Katniss (which was after Peeta entered the mix) already.
      I could be wrong about this, but I dont think that Gale ever mentioned having kids with Katniss. There was the conversation that they had outside the district about running off in Catching Fire where he said it would be easy if it were not for all the kids (implying his siblings, Prim, and thier moms). I do know that it was stated once or twice her feelings towards kids/marriage in general, but I don't think that it was ever talked about kids with Gale specifically.
      I'm going to edit this post once I get my books in front of me to cite pages, which may be tommorow, so sorry if it takes some time.
      Edit: I was wrong about the conversation where they talked about running away, it was in book 1 page 9 and 10.
      Gales outburst in the conversation of how to take down the Nut is on page 204 and 205 of Mockingjay.

      @innocentdumpling The day I made that post I was irritated with other things (so I was in a little of a sour mood) and when I saw him pounce on the person that made the original post it ticked me off. I know that opinions are a thing, but if you look at the original post and the response to it, then compare my response to that first response (sorry of that is hard to follow, but I forgot their names) you can see that I did essentially the same thing, but in a more extreme way. Yes it was probably more extreme than I should have made it, but I wanted it to REALLY (used capitals because I don't know how to italicize text on phone) get my point across. Also, I where ever I cited somthing, it was a fact, which I then explained to show how it pertained to my argument. I was treating this more like a debate, so I was using my skills in that field (I am part of a debate club) to make my argument, and one of my favorite strategies is to discredit my opponent as much as possible.

    In Catching Fire, we find out Haymitch, Plutarch, and Finnick were a part of the revolution at the end, but it is also said that half the tributes were as well as Cinna, Effie, and a lot of people who worked with district 12. Katniss started the revolution because of what she did in the first games with Rue and Peeta. She risked her own life to save them. Then, with Snow announcing the Quarter Quell, it was even announced that everyone was angry. Also, the movie doesn't really show until the end that Enobaria, the girl from district 2, was alive and one of the people a part of the revolution. She helped Johanna separate Katniss by cutting the wire.
    Also, the morphling saved Peeta because they were promised to protect both he and Katniss (though Katniss was the one they needed to start the revolution, but if she had lost Peeta during the arena, getting her to cooperate, as seen in Mockingjay when she is angry about Peeta's capture would have been even more difficult)

    I think what sparked the revolution was when Rue dies actually, I often wondered what would have happened if she had survived until the end. She and katniss showed unity between two districts and not like one and two but they were both selfless with each other and helping the other with no selfish reason. When rue died and katniss was obviously torn not pleased she was one step closer to home, singing for and dressing her in flowers. She also gave a sign from her district to hers which showed a connection between the two. That sparked it and then with the berries at the end the games was pure defiance to the system.

    Kind of an arrogant video.. Several of these are either obvious to everyone, or wrong.
    -A good book/movie has three-dimensional characters. I would think less of the THG books if Gale had been a jerk/bad guy/evil, but he's not, he has good and bad sides. His bad sides cost him and his friends a lot, so he's a tragic character, really.
    -Cinna did *not* spark the revolution. He contributed, but Katniss, unknowingly, was the spark. That was kind of the whole point...
    -"Finnick is actually nice"???!!! Give me a break.
    Good point about the PTSD, though. If you want to know what it's like in the head of someone who has depression and PTSD, Mockingjay is your book.

Also, Gale watched the people he loved die, it's easy to think it might have made him angry. I think Gale had flaws but he was one of the most realistic characters. He watched a power hungry Capitol draw people to get slaughtered every year for his entire life. It's easy to understand him wanting to make anyone involved or even anyone who didn't seem to care pay.

    Actually the first spark of rebellion is in the first movie when Peeta and Katniss are the last 2 tributes left and she refuses to kill Peeta, they act in defiance by deciding to kill themselves together rather than killing each other. Seneca Crane surrendered to them and declared them both winners before either one of them died. This is in direct defiance of the capitol as for the past 73 years there has always been one winner, and she managed to manipulate the capitol into going against that rule, humiliating them I front of the whole country. From this point on, there is trouble. After this President Snow visits her to let her know the possible consequences for her actions and threatens to kill everyone she loves. So yea, Cinna didn't spark anything, it was Katniss.

    • @elliesak
      @elliesak 6 лет назад +1

      Actually, the first spark in the revolution was when Rue died. Katniss laid flowers around the girl so that the Capitol would see. She knew that the Capitol would have to film Rue getting lifted into the air, it was customary. And when Katniss did the three fingered sign to the camera, it caused a ripple that made District 11 realize how unfair they were being treated. They already knew that they were being treated horribly, but the fact that they made an 12 year old get murdered... It was a cause to break a dam.
