I left home when i was 15 and went to Africa, wanted to see it, took me 15 years to see my family again.... They saw me leaving at 15 years old, and i was 30 when i came back.... Worked on boats, but most of my travels where on land. It's not always easy not having your family with you. I know exactly how it feels. But they say" if it doesn't kill you, will make you stronger" . Ook in Nederland gewoond... 8 jaren... Mooi waren die tijden....!!! Go for it girl!!!? I believe at a later age i will regret more the things i haven't done, than the ones I've done... Sounds like a cliché.... Don't stop....
I enjoyed this very much! I have read all your blogs at the time. So nice to see the footage. Yep, I could have bought books, and movies, but hey I am Cheap, I am Dutch :-)
Awesome recap... You play good guitar.... one of my fav. Metallica songs🤘 You must feel fulfilled that you were able to start at such an early age ..important to have supportive parents👍My early days I had a 14' rowboat …oar power... darn... That's what I was missing …sails😂 I guess I will also renew my PADI scuba certification from the '80's one day😁Happy belated Easter and hoping you and your family stays safe👍
Laura, your videos are lovely but I would LOVE to see more actual "Sailing" of yours. That is upwind, tacking with 2 masts and 4 sails, then sailing downwind maybe with the spinnaker, etc ! Sailing, Sailing & Sailing... Thanks !!
Just getting around to seeing this! Thank you for sharing. Amazing to watch someone single hand a boat like this and on a trip like this. Then you realize the reality that the captain is a 15-16 year old. GREAT job!!!
Hi Laura You are truly an incredible and inspirational person! I wish I was young enough to travel with you. I will be trying to get my granddaughter...1 week old to get n your radar! Thanks for the amazing inspiration!
I'm so jealous. It seems to be a great experience and watching your videos feel like I'm living it. Maybe in the future! Keep it up, I'm in love with your channel :~)
i have watched all your videos and am going through them again. i have noticed that the sea and the wind and the sailing in general is much more pleasant in these earlier videos. in video #6 especially, i got nervous for you in how intense your sailing challenges seemed to be... even though you seemed to like it and did not display tension from the heavier seas and wind in that video. obviously, sailing is in your veins and heart. :)
She mentions somewhere that she learned a lot in the earlier parts of the voyage, such as crossing the Atlantic. By the time she was past the Galapagos, she was fully prepared to take on the much more severe challenges over the top of Australia and right across the Indian Ocean and then on to Cape Town.
Cool at :44 A shortwave radio, hopefully wide open with frequencies so you can become a Ham Radio Operator. There is a new mode now called JS8 and it works even now world wide . A person could send messages and location/bearing/status data and people would relay it to your people. For Free ! And takes very cheap equipment. Unlike Pactor, expensive.
Because you offer your pancake to our Greek God 'NEPTUNE' you must take more than ''thumbs up'' i will subscribe too......... congratulations and stay safe. VASILEIOS
Alot of sailing videos shows all the things they do outside sailing. That's OK, but they don't place enough emphasis on the actual sailing...how often they have to trim and reef sails...and do so at night...and through stormy water...thats what one wants to see too
Yes you are right, but when it gets difficult and very rough, filming is usually the last thing on a persons mind ( unless youtube is the main income I guess..?!) For me the filming was always fun, I made it for myself, friends and family and only just now decided to post some of it. Maybe in the future I will keep your comment in mind and try to film some more of the actual sail handling and technical things in rough weather ;)
@@lauradekkerworldsailing Actually, in this series you DO show a lot of the sailing. I'm very impressed by how well your boat was organised, how well it worked, how you handled everything. Did you ever have to go up the mast by yourself?
What does nationality have to do with it? It's highly likely most people not associated with activities like sailing, or overlanding, or remote living with a need to communicate would know about such technology.
spoilt child. many kids same age,,cant buy a expensive sail boat like this,,,,,she no works to pay the boat,,get for free en than act like oooooo look me hahahah come on set up show..
you know NoThing about what you say. she has been sailing since she was six and bought her first seaworthy boat at the age of 10 with her own money doing odd jobs after school.

Laura Dekker is my hero!
Your bravery is as impressive as your intellect.
That Neptune Pancake was they key to your successful voyage. He is tired of bad Rum and nasty Aquavit.
Respect. Well done.
I know this ravioli-feeling. It's the disappointing gap between prepared to eat and forced to clean up 🙄😂

Most American girls don't even know what a single side band radio is.... For that matter , most American boys don't either.

Nice, troll von penistein
