Ok but can we appreciate how curved Larry Graham’s slapping thumb is
Is having a curved slapping thumb a good thing?
Appreciated
@@aaronf2467 does it have any advantages for slapping or benefits?
Hitchhiker's thumb.
@@caseyhamm4292Realy ? Man I have Hitchhikers thumbs I’m so lucky !
✨BEHS✨
cool 😎
Love the way RUclips says: "translate to English" 😂
@@cjstato what does it translate to?
@@pancakeguy1it doesn't change it at all, disappointingly so. BEHS.😂
...as we know it todeh..
The story behind the invention of slap was actually when the drummer didn't show up at a performance, causing Larry to use a new percussive technique in the place of him.
I heard that he invented slap when he use to play music with his mom. She was on piano and he was on bass. They had no drummer so he decided to play percussion with his bass.
@@OGEdgerthat's what i heard too
Thats the real story
I Heard an Interview with Larry explaining This.
@@OGEdgeryes!
Worth noting that Larry Graham is Drake’s uncle
Ohhhhhh cool to know!
Wow, music history!
Which proves talent doesn't always run in the family
@@symbiosisaiouch
@@symbiosisailmao
Drake is the kinda guy who's uncle would smack the goofy out a bass for the first time.
This has nothing to do with drake the fuck
That’s so tight bruh

I can't explain it but this guy seems like in a video game he'd be a secondary character. Like an ally that follows you around the map
I tgink it may be the voice
😆 I get it
Bard skill trainer
Well yea he’s a bassist
I'm too high for this comment 😅
>slap bass technique for electric bass was first recorded in 1969
É P I C O
Nice
Slap the bass if you liked it
slap like now
The year the US gov't filmed a fake moon landing and convinced millions of people that we are ahead of the nazis
nice
It's wild that Larry Grahm is Drake's uncle.
No, Drake is Larry Graham's nephew
1) Larry calls it Thumpin' and Pluckin'
2) The first "slap" ("Thumpin") song was Sly and the Family Stone's 1st hit, "Dance To The Music"
3) The first "Slap and Pop" (Thumpin' and Pluckin') tune "thank you falletinme be mice elf agin"
Yes we watched the video
slap bass makes grooves instantly funky
Heck yeah, gimme that sweet FUNK
Btw Larry Graham is Drake's uncle
Dang you beat me to it
wtffffff crazyyyy
yeah his dad was also a drummer for pretty famous musicians
@@kashoutlenoxIt makes his absolute lack of talent all the more bizarre
Ok.. but can DRAK thump the bass get tar!
Larry is also an excellent vocalist. He's the definition of music.
Ok but the upright is FIRE 🔥
still used in some bands to excellent effect
Larry's a Legend.
All the slap greats, Mark King, Bootsy, Flea, Marcus Miller... They all point to Larry Graham as the inventor of slapping and popping electric bass 🙏🙏
Les Claypool
1969 was just the perfect year for this
It is pretty nice
First time I heard this song was in Skate (2 or 3) and remembered how funky it sounded. The bassline was legendary
It's was skate 2 and yeah that where I heard it
@bluspringtrap9396 masterpiece!
Wow, you guys are young.
📌My cousin; and one of my grandfather's first cousins. RIP Grandpa "Boochie" Graham.🌹✌🏽
He called it "thumpin' and pluckin'"

great video!
Of course slap bass was invented in '69
👋🍑👋 lol
and thus jerry seinfeld is born

Larry isn't just special because he popularized slapping, but he was really fantastic at it. The "Hair" riff is just insanity.
I got my first bass !
nice
'Thump Bass' People !!!
Imagine being the first guy to do a technique that would become a definitive style? Amazing really.
And another pioneer of music which many have no idea of whom they are copying. From Sly and the Family Stone to Graham Central Station.Larry Graham forever
"Slap bass sounded like this"
Actually kinda went hard tbh
Black people have invented everything good in music since the beginning. Love it!
Untrue and racist.
@@Helgrimr nobody started a race war but you since I didn't say anything depicting about any other race, but here you come to the rescue for white/western culture when nobody said anything bad about it. I just stated my opinion, and Im not even black, Im a latino with european heritage too.
pedal steel guitar is one of the best inventions, criminally underrated.
Thank you for saying this. Many of us have been announcing this, but some people try to shut us up or say it's a lie.
I have been echoing your sentiments, especially whenever I see discrimination against Black artists.
You're a real one. Stay blessed.
when will people stop categorizing others as black, white, latino or whatever? god thats so dumb...
Thank you for reminding me to listen to some roots funk music. Feels so damn good!
I've loved this song for years, but didn't know it was the first song that introduced slapping. Such a cool thing to learn
"Thank you for letting me be myself, again." Yessss!

Larry Graham was the bassist in Sly and the Family Stone. And I lived for Graham Central Station in the seventies.
Thank you fo lettin’ me be myself again.
Actually, it was Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)
Larry Graham we thank you for being yo self, as we "dance to the music" of Sly and the family Stone.
Love that double bass slap sound no cap
That did look like it might have been a double bass but that style is more commonly played on the tololoche which is slightly smaller than the English double bass. The real kick is it the tololoche uses fat nylon Spanish strings that make the tone a little softer and the slap a little harder. Definitely RUclips tololoche. If you liked the bad here you will love tololoche.
My grandma taught Larry how to slap a da Bass in 1968 🤩
You wish.
("Sgt.J."). Ha, Ha! Bootsie is athat you? I, Recognize Those Sun Glasses. So, You in Drag Pretending to be Your Grandma..? Lol.🍻✌️🕊️
that pick sounds good!
love it... on the one, bro
Yup, he was well equipped.......if only I was alive back then my panties would have been on the stage! 😂..... That's right ladies it ain't the shoe size but the thumb 👍🏼 ...Yeah I went THERE.... Lighten up! 🎸❤🎸😁
yeah that is an African style used in Gambar ( instrument like a modern bass)
gambar is an African instrument? which is an African style?
the BEHS mahrines
Well I'm early great video as always 🎉

Toquese un corrido con tololoche, viejón
The “Beh-Ace”
I love that song, I didn’t know it was the first slap bass, not only the first but one of the best, definitely the funkiest!
I still don’t understand one thing guys: Is the slap bass technique literally just hitting the strings with your thumb?
Yes basically having a slap fight with your string
Kinda, for your thumb you move your wrist to where your thumb hits through the string and you pluck with your fingers
My inner Primus comes out anytime I hear slap bass
Larry’s thumb goes through the string, he doesn’t “slap” - he “thumps”- his own words
Sounds like every American comedy show from the 80's and 90's
Thieves
Another fun fact Larry Graham is a Jehovah’s Witness and is the person who converted Prince to become one
wait, prince became a Jehovah witness??? didnt know that :0
Doesn't surpise me, apparently even religion couldn't save Prince from his drug addiction, still hella talented and gifted dudes 🤣
@@ithan0404yes, Prince and Larry even went door to door handing out booklets. No joke.
And now I have some opening to a Paul Simon ditty in my head for some reason!! 😂😂😂
This is really interesting thanks!
You make it sound as though upright basses are extinct.
You have very clean technique with your fingers, thumb, a pick, and while your slapping! Much respect from my end!
Pick tone>
I really thought behs was its own thing💀
Graham's wasn't the first. However as a style, he popularized the technique so he truly deserves the title of the pioneer of slap bass.
So who was it then
E P I C
Graham was one of the greats. I saw him with his band Graham Central Station in '75 at the Crater Festival in Honolulu. He also pioneered the use of the voice box while he was with Sly and the Family Stone.
love the magazine cover of that song too
Now the upright slap bass is a staple in Mexican music
Definitely.
a lot of corridos artists use slapping on an upright bass instead of having a drummer. very unique sound
I play with my thumb I feel recognized for once
I have one of those red japanese epiphones with humbuckers!
Sweet
MAN,, FUNK IS THA SHIT!!! LARRY GRAHAM, A GENIUS!!
That line from Thank U is just as fresh as ever.
That riff is totally badass. I wonder if the bassline for "Superstition" could be improvised to something inspired by this.
"or a pick"
Davie504: That's illegal!!!
Davie504 won't even play a tololoche. Not a real bad player
New Count Day #210 of BEHgging for Necrobutcher's BEHS tone
Larry was the EVH of bass
God the slap on the double bass sounds so good
Nice Dude!
Larry is a legend! I saw him open for Prince and he was mind-blowingly good.
I’m 62, and still wanting to learn to play slap bass!

Sounds so funky! I’ve always played with a pick and can’t even play with fingers but I’m by no means good
Man, I love funk
Thanks for this impulse, it lead me into new musical spheres! ❤
There is a special place in heck for people who play bass with a pick.
BEHS!
For some reason when he played that Larry Graham, I was getting ready to start looking for the song it sound good
From 0:11-0:25 what hes playing is one of the coolest bass rhythms ive heard
As a bassist of 45 years, as much as I love Larry Graham's riff, I am so, so dick of slap.
I want to thank you (larry Graham) for slapping the Behs
It's worth mentioning that Larry Graham is no other than Steve Harvey who travelled back in time.
Cool asf
funky bro
That sound is synonymous with the 70s
Willie Dixon...did it way before...Wrote
spoonful....Clapton made it way better but i still like Willies slap bass.
