Thanks for sharing! I had an AI Bullet for about 3 months before a direct lightning strike took out all my wired network devices (including those in my barn, which is connected via a wireless bridge 😢). I was still evaluating when it went, so your insights are helpful. I was a little disappointed that license plate detection required the vehicle to be closer than my original location allowed. It was about 3 m high aimed down the driveway and didn’t capture the license plate until I was about 10-12 m from the pole. Unfortunately, the driveway split about 15m away, so I only got traffic coming down the one lane. Plan was to move it 5m closer and drop it so it had a better angle. Never got to that before it got fried. I’m still debating what to replace that one with.
Wow, that would have been spectacular, if you caught it on camera. ⚡ If you need specific LPR functionality, there is the new AI LPR as well. In general the placement is important to get the right view of number plates, and it will vary from country to country too as number plates change as well. It does require some trial and error for any specific location.
I liked your bird roosting devices on your pole mount and your gate camera, as well as the solar panel. hopefully, they do the job to keep other cleaning maintenance to a minimum
Yes, they do work really well. I have the occasional bird that manages to land on the camera itself, but it is rare. I still need to clean the panels frequently, just due to dust.
As always I like your honest opinion in this review. I don’t have the AI bullet as I find it too expensive for the light sensitivity of the camera. I do have the AI Turret that works great for detecting people, cars and animals during the day but does a bad job at night. I had to add some flood lights to detect a car at 20m range. Otherwise it detects basic movement but does not filter out the false alarms. At the same spot I have an old Hikvision 4K camera giving a much clearer image so I hope the AI Port will be at help.
It was the first generation of AI camera from Unifi, and the IR range was a lot better on these than previously. I really like the AI Turret too. You can choose to detect only smart detection and not all movement, which might help in your case.
If you could turn on wide dynamic range or WDR, it may help you with a license plate reading. It also looks like you could potentially mount a camera to the fence post that the gate connects to, and run PVC outdoor conduit back to your network box along the bottom of the fence to get better LPR.
I don't see a WDR setting. Do you know where that is? I am definitely looking at options for a gate camera closer to the road. I have more plans down there though, including 240V, so it might be part of that project.
The Aluminium castings have never been a problem for me, I think they are cast alumininium, which means they can crack if over tightened. I do think it is a case of people over tightening them when they fail. These don't need to be tightened to ridicuolous levels to hold toe cameras securely. These AI Camera's are pretty awesome. I think this is one area where Ubiquiti are a little ahead of the competition. The cameras are good quality, they have good optics and good sensors and the detection is pretty reliable. The IR reflection seems to limit number plate recognition at night time, which is where the new LPR camera shines a bit as it has filters. I am looking forward to giving the AI Port a try with the G5 Pro's I have. It looks like Ubiquiti plan to be able to support 5 Protect cameras on one AI Port, which should be quite interesting.
Over tightening anything will break it. And as you say, these devices don't need a lot of strength to hold them on. Oh, right, is that what the problem is with IR. Someone suggested maybe lowering the frame rate. Wow, 5 on one AI Port would make that devices much more appealing.
@@LarsKlintTech Angles of the cameras do help too, but mostly it is reflections, which wash out the number plate a bit. You could try reducing the frame rate, but I don't think that will make a big difference in your situation.. Look forward to the LPR camera when you do get one :)
Thanks Lars! Looks to be drying up on the farm mate. I am looking to upgrade a G5 Bullet to an AI model as I really want facial and LP recognition. I wonder if the 4K AI cameras assist in better night time LP recognition?
It's actually very very green for this time of year. The robot mowers have had plenty to do 😊 The 4K AI camera is possibly more accurate at night, but I can't be sure. I am hoping the AI LPR will solve this.
Nice review, but I wonder how it will handle the heat being an all black camera housing in direct sunlight compared with your G3. I am fully aware that UI wants to make their cams recognizable with this black/white color scheme, but I hope they will look into letting the customers choose between these colors. On some cams like the G5 Turret they now have 2 versions so lets hope they will also introduce this on e.g. AI Turret and the non-AI Pro series ;)
Yes, heat can definitely be an issue here 🫠 We'll see over summer how it performs. More and more cameras are available in white or black, so hopefully that will continue.
I compared the AI Pro with the AI Turret. Turret is giving out the better image quality. And because of the missing zoom lense you don't need to focus it, the whole picture is sharp.
Personally I’d rather the G5 Turret Ultra with an AI Port. You get more for your money this way, especially when the AI Port is updated to support 5 Protect cameras.
Great video as usual, Lars. I’m confused as I’m running an AI Pro and I’ve never seen it discern a vehicle’s color once. In fact, I didn’t know that was a feature until your videos. Why does my AI Pro-one of three that I own-not show the vehicle’s color? I’ve tried various frame rates-from 12 to 25 FPS-and nothing, even when it’s very clear to the eye what color the vehicle is.
@@LarsKlintTechinteresting. You are correct, it does show up when you do a specific search for “bullet,” but not when you browse the camera security section. Wonder if this means it is being phased out?
Not sure where you are looking to get that. Do you mean the junction box? You don't have to get that. It is designed to be tamper resistant for certain installations.
@LarsKlintTech Yea, a junction box. Well here in Croatia it's a must, especially if you install a camera on a brick or concrete wall. Really nice camera but too expensive IMHO, but hey, Ubiquiti is like a Apple in the networking world to me so no wonder camera mount is 50 bucks
I bought the AI bullet thinking it would be better than some of the others but its junk, it cant even do License plate reading at 20ft at a stationary gate properly. also as far as i know they stopped making the AI Bullet version and only making the better ones due to how bad this version was.
I don't have any issues reading number plates at day, but it struggles at night like I showed. I disagree "it's junk", but thanks for sharing your view.

I always enjoy your videos Lars, keep it up! :)
Thanks mate. I will keep doing them 😊
Maybe if you select less FPS, images will be clearer and the camera will be able to read license plates at night. Great review!
Thanks mate. Possibly. I will try it out. Someone else in the comments mentioned it might be the IR messing with it too.
Now that you have outdoor cables, what are people going to pester you about to fix now? 😉
😂😂😂😂 You know how to RUclips.

@@LarsKlintTech would be interesting to see if it does package detection?
@@SuperPaulNZ It should do. It is an option for getting notifications from it, just like any other Unifi camera.

The also makes license plate recognition better for the turret.
Very nice. Thanks for the info. I am really liking the AI Turret too, especially the 40meter IR range.

Black camera case is not a good idea in the Australian summer. It will get really hot. White would be better.
Yeah, you aren't wrong. I will see how it goes, especially today is going to be 40C+ 🫠
Is there an enhancer for this model that could help at night?
No, only for the G5 Pro and the AI Pro. I think the best option is to get an IR floodlight and put on the post.
I’m not seeing this on the UI store…. Is it still available?
It's no longer listed on the Ubiquiti UK store either.
It is still listed on the US and EU stores: eu.store.ui.com/eu/en/products/uvc-ai-bullet
It is sold out, but hopefully comes back in stock.
@@LarsKlintTechit’s only viewable on the US site if you have a direct-link. If you just browse the store, it doesn’t show up.

At first this video was very confusing to me because I thought you were reviewing the AI Pro, didn’t realize the AI Bullet is a different camera.
They do look very similar, but now you've learnt! 😁
good video, keep up the good work. How about o check the new AI PORT. Thnak you
Thanks mate. I appreciate that. As soon as I get my hands on the AI Port, I will record it 😊
Grommets, my biggest bug bare. HEY UNBIQUITY, ARE YOU Listening, please put them on the store. So if a wombat rides up on a bike will it detect that?
Yes, right after calling the circus to get their star act back to them.
@LarsKlintTech I hear it's pretty easy to call the Vic government these days. 😁
Now add the AI enhancer and then you'll really have something.
There's an AI Bullet enhancer?
Yeah the first gen AI cameras I would give a pass.
Why? What can't be fixed with a firmware upgrade?

It has a high frame rate mode , ai pro doesnt have that wow
Oh yeah, good point. I wonder if this has something to do with 2K vs. 4K?
