Thank you for sharing this. I never knew this was a thing until I recently installed some PBT, Cherry Profile keycaps on a keyboard with north facing MX Clears. Fortunately they were an inexpensive set.
As someone that's still fairly new to the custom mk scene, this was by far the best explanation of cherry profile keycap interference. It does make me wonder though since some switches are able to avoid the interference issue despite being north-facing if switch companies altering the top housing to accomodate PCBs with north-facing LEDs are an easier and less costly fix than pcbs being made with south-facing LEDs.

I heard epbt & jtk caps has longer stem compared to gmk which may affect this issue. If you have epbt try to put ruler on the bottom of the caps and try to see whether the gap between ruler and stem is discernible compared to gmk.
Yes. Epbt & Jtk caps are known for low-profile keycaps and they look pretty much same but they are slightly different from GMK. Leopold stock keycaps are also one of low-profile keycaps but lower and thicker than GMK. Thanks for sharing useful information.
I recently got a set of GMK belafonte keycaps. I currently have a ducky one 2 mini while I wait for my zoom75 group buy to ship. I just started in this hobby, does anyone know if the stock cherry Mx reds on the ducky have interference? The PCB has north facing LEDs, but the switches’ wall is on the south side of the switch. I haven’t noticed any interference, but I’m not that versed in how to tell. I just don’t want to damage my new keycaps

Hey wildcat, so if the housing is an important factor, will the interference sounds better on milky housing? Because when i drop the milky housing on table, it has softer sound than the clear one. So, can i conclude that milky housing has better sounding even it's get hit by the interference? I had gateron yellow ks3x47 with top milky and black bottom. Thanks !

That shouldn't cause problem on your escape keys; it's profile should be high enough to not cause any interference. It's only very low profile keycaps that's affected like R3 Cherry profile. Usually corner keys sound different because of the location of the key in relation with other keys and the case.
recently bought a drop alt and then a set of gmk keycaps. the alt comes with cherry browns rgb. Would changing the switches fix my problem, and if so, which would you recommend. On top of that, are there some switches that can't be used in the pcb, or are the stems the same on north and south?
If you care the interference a lot, try Holy Pandas. If you don't care, any 3-pin switches are fine. 5-pin switches are not compatible on ALT, CTRL keyboard PCBs unless you cut out the 2 extra legs of 5-pin switches. Stems are not related to facing.
(also new), from what I understan, interference refers to the sound that the switch-chassis makes when hitting lower profile keycaps. this does not happen with south facing leds, because with those, the LED itself will hit the keycap first. idk what the actual sound difference is either lol so if you found out lmk

As far as I know yes, the combination of the stem + housing for the Holy Pandas make it so the stem isn't completely flush with the rest of the housing at full bottom out, and it only happens because of the long Halo stem + the shorter Panda housing.
I'm a little confused. So if you have north facing LEDs, but you install the switches all south facing, there is no interference if you install the keycap upright? When you flipped the keycap upside down is only when it causes interference on that Space65?

Hi Wildcat, regarding the interference, have you tried the cheap switch gaskets? They raise the caps by a little bit so that they do not hit the tops of the switches and it may just solve the issue for your savage 65!
Yeah I know the washers but I don't like to use. It will elevate the keycaps that would look ugly for me. However, my Savage65 has the south-facing switch support PCB so no problem at all without them.

Yes cuz orings will fill the gap but the typing feeling is totally different and I really don't like.

Do you have DCS profile? If so, could you check if they have interference? It's very similar to cherry profile but it has much thinner walls.

check your pcb, you can't use a switch with different direction on the same pcb.

dear wildcat, you have just saved me $200. i want the north facing led(like the 9 year old that i am) but i want to know the switches that will not be affected by this . You mentioned the holy pandas. What are the other switches that also wont be affected by the north facing led with the cherry profile keycaps i have?
today I just found out that my outemu switches (specifically the outemu silent peach switches) has similar bottoming out height to the holy pandas, maybe this is one to consider

you can use them without any input problem, but the feeling will be a bit weird because of the interference
So just to be clear, if I were to get a gmmk with gateron brown switches and gmk caps will I have issues with bottoming out? I have read a bunch of forums but it is difficult to find a final consensus. Are there any affordable hot swap keyboards that have south facing switches?

@@3ildcat I found them after watching your previous videos :). With the issue with north facing switches and cherry profiles, are gmk key caps really worth worrying this much over? They seem really high quality, but i dont want to run in to issues with clearance. I also prefer tkl.
@@3ildcat Do you think grinding the r3 row a few mm is a reasonable solution instead of trying to find south facing tkl keyboards?
