  • How has the 80-tonne Kumbam of Brihadiswara Temple remained in place for 1000 years?
In the ancient town of Tanjore (Thanjavur), the skyline is still dominated by its oldest and tallest structure-the awe-inspiring Brihadiswara Temple. Built over a thousand years ago by Raja Raja Chola, this grand temple, also known as Periya Kovil, stands as a testament to the architectural genius of the Chola dynasty. Raja Raja dedicated the temple to Lord Shiva, the destroyer of worlds, aiming to inspire the same awe in his subjects as they felt for their all-powerful god.
Brihadiswara, a UNESCO World Heritage site, remains a fully functional place of worship and is regarded as the pinnacle of South Indian temple architecture. Stretching over 47 acres, the temple complex houses a massive Nandi bull, towering sculptures, and the iconic Vimana that rises 213 feet without the use of cement or binding material. The Vimana’s capstone, weighing 80 tonnes, continues to baffle researchers as to how it was placed at such great height, with theories ranging from long ramps to circular structures pulled by elephants and humans.
Granite stones, transported from over 100 kilometres away, were used to build this monumental structure. The temple’s frescoes, inscriptions, and intricate sculptures, including the famed Nataraja, still fascinate scholars. Mysterious carvings, such as the unexplained figure of a European man, add to the enigma of Brihadiswara’s history.
This video explores the incredible feats of engineering, artistry, and mystery that make Brihadiswara one of India’s most enduring architectural wonders.

You are wrong. This is not a site seeing tourist attraction place. This is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva Mahadeva and this temple was built by the Chola Empire under the leadership of Raja Raja Chola. This is a Hindu temple and devotees who come here from all over the world do come to pray for the blessings of Lord Shiva. What is so special about this temple is its grandeur of architecture and the mammoth construction and the 80 TON Gopuram icing on the cake and till date no one actually knows how the ancient builders architects achieved such level of perfection. No modern day cranes can Lift such weight upto such heights.
It is better that the place is not a tourist attraction place because there won't be any devotion. Sorry to personally ask you this question ❓ will you go to the temple to pray for the blessings of Lord Shiva?? Or whether your present religion will stop you from going to a Hindu temple?
Lord Shiva is a God without beginning and without any End. There are thousands of foreigners who are still are researching about Lord Shiva and trying to understand and come to visit ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva Vishnu and mother Goddess. They come with lot of faith and not as tourists. This temple has withstood earthquakes too.
So please kindly don't blame the tourism department 😂😂

@@abymathew295 sorry, Hindu temples are not places of site seeing, period.

Outside the temples in Puri Jagannath temple in Orissa and in Guruvayoor Krishna temple and in many other temples it is boldly written Hindus only allowed. I hope you will understand. There is nothing secular about a religious place. It is a place of worship.
Foreigners or tourists can go to tourist attraction places destinations in Munnar Valparai Ooty Kodaikanal, Lal Bagh, Backwaters of Kerala, museums, beaches, Goa or so many tourist destinations in North and Eastern and Western India, in fact India offeres excellent tourism in almost all the states.

One more thing to notice that temple was built in accordance with the Tamil language. There are 12 “uyir” letters in Tamil, The height of the Nandi statue in the temple is 12ft. There are 18 “mei” letters in Tamil, The total height of Nandi statue with its basement is 18ft. There are 216 “uyir-mei” letters in Tamil, The height of the temple is 216ft. The existing monolithic Nandi was built by Thanjavur Nayaks centuries later. The orginal Chozha period Nandi was replaced with it.
Chozha period Nandi can be seen near Varahi Amman shrine at the prakara mandapa (Thiruchutru Maligai) of the temple complex. It was originally kept small so that the sunlight falls directly at the Linga during sunrise (temple is faced towards the east and the Sun also rises East). There was no Dwajasthamba (Kodi Maram) also in orginal construction. The flag was directly hoisted on the vimana itself. So there was no intrusion to the morning sunlight to Linga.
This is something not known by many and it reflects engineering prowess of Tamizh architects of Chozha period!

It is not a fake narrative. The temple was built after the victory of three empires Rashtrakutas, Pandyas and Lankans.
