Truth seeker, I think he appealed to the same things that caused the Germans to embrace Hitler. We came out of a depression, and it was easy to blame others, immigrants and the politicians that allowed it to happen. He fed hate, and bigotry, and racists and right wing extremists embraced him. He lied about everything shamelessly, and continued to repeat them. It became a mindless cult, a fever without thought or reason. Rhetoric took the place of reason, symbols were more important than principles. Sticking it to the "other" outweighed everything else. Hopefully that fever breaks, and people will ask what they're doing, and realize how close were to losing our democracy.
