kitty :)
back in the good old days they were just called "First person shooters"
Yeah, I'm not a fan of the whole "boomer shooter" category. I prefer to focus on the years/decades FPS games released. But in the end, their all just FPS games.
No one called them first person shooters in the 90's, they called them "Doom clones".
@@akaJughead Annnd what did they call Doom?
@@kizunadragon9they called it Doom 😉
Even further back; they were called
"Corridor Shooters" (in the '90s)
I saw Darkwatch on the thumbnail. So I watch.
I'm a simple man.
A man of taste as well 🤌
That & Disruptor caught my eye
I still remember seeing games like Disruptor in magazine ads
Another great video! Thanks so much for highlighting Disruptor! It was one of the first games I got for my PS1 back in the day that I was genuinely excited about- I just picked it up used, not knowing anything other than it was an FPS... and it was great! I can still remember thinking that there was a footprint on the gate your FMV avatar would step into before the start of each level and it always made me laugh because I couldn't decide if it was meant to be there or not.
Glad you enjoyed Disruptor! Yeah that teleport pad is something else haha
How I wish Darkwatch would get a PC port.
Alien Trilogy was on DOS too...
also Sega Saturn...
@@edy1361 He mentioned the Saturn version in the video...
Considering how much I love Alien Fireteam Elite; Alien Trilogy on PS1, was a dream come true, in retro FPS
It needs to be preserved & bought back
Oh wow, never heard of Disruptor! It’s on the list my friend! Alien Trilogy is pretty great! Rick Moranis 😂
You already know how much I love Darkwatch 🤷🏼♂️ and I’m a fan of Area 51 also. Great vid Johnny!!!
Glad you enjoyed! I figure you'll really dig Disruptor too 🙂
@@JohnnygrafxI think so too!!!
Rebel Moon; a novel, that lead me to find Rebel Moon Rising
I just obtained Disruptor! I need to play that. I’ll be getting Darkwatch. OMG! Fantabulous video, John!!!
Thanks!
Bro awesome video I'm definitely picking up Disruptor!
Nobody ever remembers Sniper/Subspace, the original massive online shooter from the mid 90s. One of the longest running games of all time if you count the reskinned clone fans have been hosting since Sony shut it down. And even if you don't the clone itself has been hosted for over 25 years.
Another great video, you're one of my favorite RUclipsrs. Thank you for the content.
Glad you enjoyed 🙂
Alien Trilogy was definitely underrated. It was freaky to walk down a seemingly empty corridor, turn a corner, and be face to face with a snarling xenomorph.
Dark Forces was also a favorite of mine on MS-DOS. That was actually a great game for the time. It wasn't until it's sequel that we got an actual 3-D polygonal shooter in 1997. And that really got the ball moving for Star Wars FPS games because for the first time we got to play as a Jedi in training, and could dispatch our enemies with a lightsaber.
Yeah I really enjoyed republic commando and the OG battlefront games. I wish they could have kept that train going.
Good content, subbed.
wow I really like the levels in disruptor
Yup the variety is top notch!
JOHNNY!!!!!!
Excellent videos as always my friend! Thank you!
Any chance for chapters or game marks on your timelines?
Glad you enjoyed! I have it set to do chapters automatically. Sometimes it does em sometimes it doesn't. I'll probably just start doing them manually though 😉
Ahh okay. Yeah I figured you would want people to dig into specifics they want to see. Well thanks for all the work you put in. It's an inspiration to me on my own videos. @@Johnnygrafx
Wait, Darkwatch and Area 51 are now considered "boomer shooters!?" By that logic, Halo CE is one now too lol. This category is out of control. Just gonna call them FPS games.
There's a Japanese PS1 FPS game called Expert. Think Wolfenstein 3D meets Die Hard plus anime influences. Nightdive Studios could remaster this one.
It's more about style than about age. Like for instance Ion Fury or Prodeus would fit into that catagory even though their relatively new games.
But I'm definitely going to look into that game! Sounds cool.
Darkwatch is so good. Have the Xbox and PS2 version.
Johnny Grafx what's the difference between a Boomer shooter and a doom clone?
I don't claim to be the arbiter of this, but as I understand it, being a boomer shooter is a style. Like noire in film. It's a vibe. Whereas Doom clones are very specifically emulating the characteristics of Doom in particular. So while Doom clones are boomer shooters, all boomer shooters aren't necessarily Doom clones.
Try Dark Forces on PC. Its great!
DarkWatch ❤
Dark Forces on PSX is just a bad port of a good game otherwise. Except the leveldesign
Not a fan of insomniac games
Just downloaded Ashes 2063 and Afterglow for some real fun
Apparently if you're over 30 you're considered a boomer nowadays by people under 20, even though real boomers are like in their 70's, you learn something new and wrong everyday.
Area 51 looked better and had Coop on the Xbox.
True, but you can get the pc version of Area 51 for free. There's even a fan remaster that makes it playable on modern pcs.
Shame Blacksite Area 51 had nothing to do with the 2005 one.
@@Gruntvc
Wow I didn't know that, going to look it up now thanks!!! I hope the PC port has the cooperative mode intact.
"dark forces" is a "doom" kinda,
but "alien trilogy" is a duke3d!!!
alien vs predator is a quake1
area51 -- half-life
darkwatch -- HL2
What's a boomer shooter? I know what a FPS is. I've never heard of a boomer shooter. And I see a video full of first-person shooters.
Boomer shooters used to just refer to those indie FPS games that were based on pre Half Life ones like Doom, Quake, or Duke Nukem 3D.
Now? They keep expanding this to cover even FPS games from the 2000s. The category is crazy.
My understanding is that its just a sub-catagory of FPS games that have Doom or Quake qualities i.e. fast movement, lots of enemies, wide open arenas, etc.
Certainly not a term that *needs*to be used though. You're not wrong to just call them first-person shooters.
@@JohnnygrafxIt's because it's a term that is superfluous and has no meaning. Baby boomers didn't play any of these games as they were mostly in their forties when even the oldest of these came out. Boomer in and of its self is a dumb term.
It's just an idiom. Just like "slasher movies" don't necessarily have to involve literal slashing, or how "walking simulators" aren't typically *just* walking around, boomer shooters aren't literally related to actual boomer-era games. It's just a way to describe classic-style FPSs. It's not that deep.
@RythymBeast, I knew a dev who worked on a few 1990s FPS games. I asked him what he thinks about this "boomer shooter" term. And he didn't approve. Why, because it was members of Generation X who made those FPS games, not members of the baby boomer gen.
Dude, dark forces is much better on PC. I'd have thought you would have played these games on their native platforms instead of playing subpar ports ..
