I had a good friend tell me the dress watch supposed to be small thin elegant does not draw attention to oneself supposed to have hands and no numbers but most importantly it's not to draw attention away from the lady by your side. That works for me.

All true. But, not all dress watch is qualified as a dress watch for your wrist. I personally have a way to test if 'thatt dress watch' is a dressy enough for me. How?
Wear that watch, then wear suit with a french cuff dress shirt. Then move your arm up and down. If the watch easily slide in and out of your cuff, then good. But if it stuck, then it's not a dress watch, FOR YOU.
For me, thickness is much more important than caze size. That's why all of my dress watch are either manual mechanical or quartz.

Yes totally agree with you on dress watches being below 40mm. I have two or three dress watches, two Rotary watches at around 38mm and 36mm, one however is in stainless steel and gold on a bracelet with a small date window but no other complications and the other watch is in stainless steel which has a very nice patterned dial which is silver and on a black leather strap. Both are ultra slim at around 8mm thickness and both have Roman numerals on them. One other I have which I could wear as dress watch is a Citizen Eco Drive watch on a black strap with a white dial and black Roman Numerals which again is an ultra slim watch which is 38mm. Thanks for your take on your watch choices.

Congrats on the 76k subs! I love my little vintage Benrus coming in at 37mm, gold filled, handwind, unobtrusive date. Someday, I'd like a modern dress watch with no complications with a solid white gold case, but this little guy will do nicely until then. Can't beat an ancient watch that's never needed servicing.

I have to wear tuxedo's on a regular basis and so a good dress watch is a must.. As I also travel quite a bit I usually have around 3 to 5 dress watches with me along with my every day watch which is a Stainless steel 1971 Rolex Sub. My dress watches include a Rolex Cellini, Rolex President, JLC Reverso, Girard Perragaux 1945 and finally a Patek Philippe Calatrava which I inherited. I tend to wear my Sub as a dress watch as well but for black tie events it's usually the Cellini or Patek. I would like to add a Breguet and an AP to the collection at some stage.

  • @anignaro

My personal dress watch is a stainless steel with some complications: JLC ultra thin perpetual calendar, with a black leather bracelet though :)
Complications depend of the way they are displayed. Here the moon phase is very elegant and gives just the right amount of color to enlighten the piece and not be too much, and the other dials are very delicate. No one really notice this watch, it complets my outfit perfectly. Only watch aficionados and myself recognize it for what it is and I love it for that too.
I really enjoy watching your videos, keep the good work!

Stellar video, when I was a kid my mom worked for a Jewelers Trade Association, I saw my first Tuxedo Watch when I was 6, a Bulova Tank in sterling silver. I have a Caravelle Tank I wear with a Tux, Tuxedo watches have been around, Sinatra always wore one. I agree, the Reverso is my favorite and, to me, the Standard along with the Cartier. One watch I like a lot for a suit is the Longines Flagship, Master etc.. Humphrey Bogart wore a Longines Evidenza in several movies and I always thought that was the Art Deco Standard for a dress watch; great style.

I definitely agree with your views on dress watches.
My favorite dress watch in my collection is a beautiful and simple Waltham from the 60’s that belonged to my Great Uncle. Sadly the case and crown are chrome plated. And the plating is wearing in spots.
However, the dial and hands are near perfect. As is the domed acrylic crystal. Markers are rectangular cut clear/white stones. Seconds are on sub-dial at 6:00.
Marked “France” below the sub-dial. I have it on a dark gray lizard strap.

I agree with pretty much everything you’ve said. Dress watches should be on the smaller and slimmer side (sub 40mm is better, but that obviously depends wrist size. 7.5in plus wrists can get away with bigger. Likewise under 10mm thick is preferred when possible, although thicker is allowed if the profile still allows it under a cuff). Likewise they should always be on a leather strap (preferably alligator/crocodile over calf/cordovan). I also agree about precious metals where possible, with steel being the only true alternative as it’s basically a lighter, cheaper, stronger white gold/platinum (no ceramic or titanium here; too casual/sporty).
For me the single most important factor is simply how elegant it is. This tends to means plain batton or applied markers, and simple hands, with no lume. Likewise, while complications are discouraged, they can exist if integrated in a subtle or elegant way, which is how we end up with moonphase, power reserve, date and even chronograph PP Calatravas and ALS Saxonias. That being said, for a dedicated dress watch, I prefer to stick to small seconds, and that’s it (I rear mounted power reserve is also nice on manual movements).
This can be perfectly shown with your Seiko example; that Presarge is both bigger and thicker than recommended from a dress watch, with an almost overpowering power reserve, yet everything is executed as elegantly as possible, making it suitable as a dress watch.

I agree, but it is hard for us guys with bigger wrists to adjust to when we wear 43mm PLUS larger size watches on daily basis, when I have to wear black tie I always wear a watch so I am not sure who made that rule up as I always wear a nice pair of AP cufflinks as well, so for me I wear a AP Royal Oak usually if I want all steel or if I am feeling like leather then I choose a Patek Calatrava.

I’ve been wearing a vintage Omega Constellation C case as a dress watch, not strictly in keeping with your rules. It has a date complication, and it’s even on a bracelet, but the brick bracelet is very thin and, to me, elegant. I should switch it out to a leather strap for a change.

my ideal dress watch would be either not complicated, or some chronograph, because i think both look good, but not when its complicated watch with no functions. i kinda have to disagree on the gold part, because even if u take care of watch and are carefull with it, its still gonna scratch so im not gonna wear gold watch. titanium is best for me becasue its light but stainless steel is ok too

Quick question in regards to dress watches. What are your thoughts on dress watches with numerals? There are a few dress watches that I really like that are time only, no date, sub 40mm, etcc... but they have Arabic numerals. I know the Tank has Roman numerals which is supposed to be a little more sophisticated but I don't know about the Arabic watches. One example is the Montblanc Heritage Chronometrie 112516

IMO dress watches are opposite of tool watches, as in they should only tell the time with no other functionalities (complications). Of course, this means the Reverso sort of bends the rules as you could argue the reverse function isn't a complication per se and people argue about whether a date complication can be a part of a dress watch or not.
In any case, with today's sartorial rules, I think as long as you're not wearing a super ostentatious watch and flaunting it around, you should be fine with most smaller watches preferably on leather straps. I doubt many people wear tuxedos much at all, let alone properly to start with....!
