100% agree with everything stated in this video Teddy. Love the Longines as well btw - I have inherited a quartz yellow gold Longines 6076 with linen dial from my late grandfather. I have upgraded it with an elegant brown croc strap, and I get to wear it every day. Next year when I turn 40, I'm treating myself to a Cartier Tank Must Solarbeat, to have a steel alternative when I don't want to wear the yellow gold 🙂

great video, Teddy - I couldn't agree more. I also love the look of wearing a dress watch with smart casual attire, its a way to subtly separate from trends and be more individual with your look. Wearing a dress watch on a regular basis is also a great way to give a nod to classic style without going obnoxiously overboard with flamboyant vintage fashion.

I bought my 1st ever dress watch this year which was actually a grail piece for me; the Grand Seiko SBGA413 Shunbun and I just loved the subtlety yet expressiveness with the dial of the watch. Add to it the Spring Drive and titanium making it accurate, innovate and light weight and slim, it made me love it even more.
I’ve worn it with a Jeans and a burberry white tshirt, a casual blazer at a party, and a wedding tux where I was the best man and it never looked out of place. And I felt happy wearing it every single day
As you said Teddy, it’s easier to dress down with a classy piece than dress up with a very sporty or casual piece

I absolutely agree with the 4th point you raised. If you wear a watch that you like and looks good, is for pure self-enjoyment. Not to show it off to others. Just be yourself and as you said: A watch should be an expression of our individuality. Great video Teddy!! 😍😍😍

As pointed out, popular trends tend to be cyclic. Yellow gold (or goldtone) watches have been on the outs for some time, but I think that they are starting to become popular again. Since the material is more compatible with dress watches than with sport watches, if indeed gold does become the new "in" color, then the popularity of the dress watch will follow along with it.

    • @martintanz9098

True, but there is a cost factor to gold. I know brands can do gold plated, but that is a layer or gold just microns thick.

Totally agree Teddy. I (like most probably most people here) love watches, and I also see that from few years the majority of attention goes to “flashy” everyday watches - which are also great btw :) Somehow I miss a bit of courage in manufacturers producing new dress watches. Most of the “new features” are around mechanical movements or materials being used etc. I am waiting for the moment to see a new dress watch that would blown us away and will give a bit of new air in dress watches space. Btw, it would be great if you could make a video on top 3 dress watches in different price ranges. (so like 15 -18 watches to present :) Of course I’m leaving to you Teddy, the definition of “TOP” watch.
All the BEST in the new year to you Teddy, your close ones and to all watch enthusiasts. Stay safe!

I also now see dress watches as being a great value proposition at the super high end. For example an A Lange and Sohne Saxonia annual calendar in platinum just sold for around $55k. Incredible movement, great and useful complication, in a precious metal for the price of a bog standard blue dial royal oak? I’d be taking the Lange all day in that battle.

The best compliment I ever received on a watch (and one of the only ones truth be told as most people don’t care) was a TSA agent looking at my JLC and saying “that’s a great dress watch sir”. No one ever commented on any of my nice sports watches. I do think dress watches are more timeless.

I go back and forth re dress watches. 4 or 5 years ago, my collection was 75 or 80% vintage or vintage inspired dress watches. These days things have evened out more, with more military inspired field watches, chronographs and divers.
Nonetheless, my best watches are still vintage dress watches.
    Edit:
I just counted. Out of about 45 or so watches, 17 of them are dress lean dressy type watches. so a little more than 1/3.

Nice insight. I have been looking at dress watches lately with my daughters wedding and other occasions coming up. Never feels quite right wearing a diver or sport watch with a suit. Spot on Teddy. Two great points. Firstly it is much easier to dress down a dress watch than dress up a sports / divers watch. Secondly a watch should be an extension of our personality as opposed to an ostentatious display of wealth. Years ago I bought an IWC GST Perpetual Calendar. To me it was a display that I had made it in my career and could afford to buy such things. But, I didn't ever feel comfortable wearing it and after 18 months I sold it for a loss. I replaced it with a much more affordable second hand Omega Seamaster that I still have because I love it.

Teddy, I recommend the JLC Reverso Duoface Medium small seconds - 42,9 x 25,5 mm. Actually you get two watches by flipping the dial (even GMT function, if needed). Better than just ONE Cartier Tank Louis (rose gold). If you need a Cartier as well then go for the cheap steel Tank Must with quarz movement. Perfect dress watches which fit also for casual occasions. A real change from the steel diving watches you see everywhere. Greetings from Germany

    Teddy,
An excellent take on the dress watch. Every gentleman and every lady should own at least one. However, modern “dress watches” are very expensive. I have chosen the vintage/used market where US made Bulova, Elgin, and Waltham watches from the 30s and 40s are still very affordable. Yes, they will need servicing and, yes they will be considered small (by today’s standard), but they remain classic in design. I believe any Watch nut should revive at least one old watch and wear it!

I find it better (if not better, easier) having a versatile sports watch like a Seiko Alpinist and change the bracelet to a nice leather strap. I agree with point 4. Your watches have to be a mirror of your lifestyle. I can't really justify a dress watch. Especially a very expensive one. At this point my Grail watch would be the JLC Polaris Perpetual Calendar(what a spitter). It's a diving watch, but much more dressier(if that's a word).

I wholeheartedly agree despite the fact that according to some definitions, I own no dress watches. According to others, I own up to eight of them. I gravitate towards refined dials in more sports watch cases, the kinds of things where reviewers (including Teddy) say it's kind of big to be a true dress watch. It does suit my lifestyle though as someone that enjoys dressing more on the smart side of smart casual and is physically active on a daily basis so leather straps are not a great choice most days.

True watch enthusiasts have never abandoned the dress watch. I’ve added a DeVille, Cellini, Clifton, as well as a vintage Seamaster Cosmic, all within the last 5 years during the tool watch trend. I agree with Teddy. I find many informal occasions to wear these watches. I think the trend towards dress watches will happen again. Especially if you consider that the industry is already complaining about the lack of innovation. This will happen even faster as celebrities start trying to differentiate themselves. I’m seeing a lot more Cartier Tank, JLC Reverso, Breguet Heritage, etc.

    • @icychap
      @icychap Год назад +1

"True enthusiast" is a nonsensical term. Someone whose collection is exclusively Omega Speedies is still an enthusiast. Someone who doesn't even own a watch (because, say, they're holding out until they can afford the one they really want) can still be an enthusiast. The dress watch isn't a gatekeeper piece. Nothing is.

    • @MD_COLO
      @MD_COLO Год назад +1

@@icychap “Nonsensical” is a bit hyperbolic. I don’t completely disagree with your argument. I’ve never subscribed to the idea that to be a watch collector, one must own at least one Rolex (or any other specific brand). Clearly, one can value watches and never even own a watch, though this would be a strange appreciation, considering a Casio can be acquired for a modest amount of money.
I use the term “watch” in its broadest sense, referring to all categories of watches. I would argue that you can’t call yourself a watch enthusiast, and only own Speedies. In the same way that you can’t say you’re a sports enthusiast, but only follow tennis - or more specifically, only follow Rafael Nadal. In this case, you’d either be a tennis enthusiast or a Nadal enthusiast. To say you’re a sports enthusiast presumes you follow more than a single sport.
I’m not arguing that you must own a dress watch. As you indicated, one can appreciate a dress watch but never own one. I am saying, and it's my opinion, that to be a true watch enthusiast one should have an appreciation for the dress watch.

A good dress watch has a timeless elegance and understated beauty that other types of watch can't rival .A beautifully designed dress watch will outlast trends and fads as style will never go out of fashion .Nomos are a classic example of a simple beauty that screams design sophistication.

Just waiting for my first "proper" (ie not a cheap quartz or the gold everite watch I inherited from my grandad) dress watch that I have chosen, an orient symphony 3. I had to attend two black tie creative events in the last year, and while my seiko 5s (diver and plain bezeled) were more formal that the smart watches most people were wearing, I felt it was time to get a nice dress watch

I just purchased my first higher tier watch as a student: A Longines Flagship Heritage! From my point of view there's nothing more groundbreaking than wearing a classy dress watch in a world dominated by smartwatches and bulky, blingy sport watches. Now I'm thinking about pairing it up with a milanese strap :)

Good take teddy, i agree on all fronts. I think dress watches are far more versatile than sports watches. Find a good one with some water resistance, steel case and sapphire crystal and no reason you can't wear it everyday. Also you wont look like everyone else.

Great video as always teddy but i have a question that's on my mind for quite some time now! Whenever you speak about dress watches you always show/refer to pieces with leather straps. You think that time-pieces with bracelets can't be worn as a dress watch?

For me, JLC Globemaster or their Reverso with a grape dial, simple, understated and elegant.

Had a jlc Reverso handwound. Found the winding a chore, and I was also nervous due to tiny crown and winding stem. Having said that, my next purchase will be the jlc reserve de marche. Meets the same need for me aesthetically, but is automatic and a bit less user intensive.

Ever since I started an interest in watches over the past couple of years I can say that the Reverso is my holy grail of dress watches. I have a smaller, more feminine wrist and that watch is calling to me 😄

Good on you for admitting small wrists are feminine.
Other side of the coin is that I handled a really big Reverso recently.
I thought it was a Cartier Santos at first.

Thanks for the video. First and foremost, the criterion for choosing a watch should be we like the watch, we all have differing tastes and fashion does play a part, however, there's been a rather, what can I say, uncouth trend, toward blingy, gaudy watches that are designed for the poser, usually by way of the large, bright coloured, sports watches, each to his or hers own taste of course, but the understated dress watch conveys far more elegance and subtlety. I hope it becomes a new trend.

I wear dress watches everyday (on leather straps) which is a chore in the Texas heat.
You need to build a serious appreciation for leather and a habit of caring for your straps, to unlock that as a practical option.
On special occasions, I pull out the alligator straps that the watch was sold with … but I use horse and kangaroo straps otherwise.
