- Hector Avalos is a professor of religious studies in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Iowa State University. He is the author of more than 10 books, including "Fighting Words: The Origins Of Religious Violence," "The End of Biblical Studies" and "The Bad Jesus."
Avalos was a fundamentalist preacher as a child. He went on to obtain a Master’s of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School and then a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and Near Eastern Studies from the same university. In 2005, Avalos and two colleagues formulated a statement against intelligent design and creationism that was eventually signed by scores of faculty members.

"The End of Biblical Studies" is excellent. I wish professor Avalos were still around.
Never thought I would think along the lines of atheism being a Christian other than the 1 time I backslid in high school. I look At everything around me and all the bad that God has not only allowed but actually ordained and determined from the beginning, and I tell myself there is NO FREAKING WAY A truly loving God could destine any of this.....
All the lonely sad nights I cried believing He didn't give a damn about me or my siblings, as well as all the terrible things that have happened to the people around me, and all the world wide tragedies occurring, and now this Corona Virus crippling our society.
Watching and listening to these individuals who have done their homework and know their Bibles better than most Christians/ Religious people in general, affirms to me that a loving God cannot exist......
Hector Avalos is one of my favorite speakers. We don't get to see enough of him. Thank you for having him as a guest.
Please have Dr. H. Avalos on again and again and again.
Thank you💕
Sadly, he passed away in April of this year. 😥
Slavery, Abolitionism and The Ethics Of Biblical Scholarship is a comprehensive study of slavery in the bible, and my favorite book by Dr. Avalos.
This man is a Saint to free thinkers everywhere
Understanding the formation of the bible will lead ro more questions. It is important for people to take interest in biblical studies. Many Christians are biblically illiterate. Many atheists are ex-Christian. Dan Barker's book was important to me. "Losing Faith In Faith" was so important. I have both hard & soft cover. This man is awesome. Thank you for this interview. incredible man.
Wonderful talk. Thank you for sharing this interview. 🌱
Such an interesting show. My first exposure to Dr Avalos, so thank you. 👍
WOW! Awesome, thank you for this great interview.
He will be missed. 😭
I had to re-read the Wikipedia article saying he "was" an atheist and advocate of secular humanist ethics; cancer is a terrible thing. I cannot wait until the next few hundred years where science is advanved and powerful enough to absolutely destroy cancer growth from ever reemergenging.
From the time I saw Annie Laurie Gaylor on Oprah, I admired her. A young woman before her time. Articulate, professional and someone who was clear about her self worth and identity. Her mother did a wonderful job parenting this woman by providing the foundation for her to feel confident about who she was and what she believed in. ✌️
A very interesting writer. Good to know the JWitnesses have actually achieved something by starting his doubts!
Fundamentally, we need to recognize the possibly subtle difference between asking “Do I know that God exists?” VS “Are there convincing arguments that God exists?”
QEPD, Dr.Avalos, a great man.
Hell is the stick, and Heaven is the carrot.
Good interview!
Just heard this legend had died, RIP
Hector Avalos, RIP

" The surest cure for Christianity is to read the bible "
••• Mark Twain
I doubted the truth/authenticity of the Bible back in the early 90s when I was in High School, now I find myself doing it again. I see how cruel/ mean-hearted so many Church goers are, I am so disappointed with the Church. If God really is all powerful, all knowing, than He is responsible for all evil that has ever occurred on this planet and whatever will occur in the future. Christians try to blame it on sin and the devil. You cannot do that in all honesty!!! According to their own Christian/Biblical dogma that religious people propagate, God is way more powerful than Satan, and he can do NOTHING without God's approval. God created the devil and pre-destined him to do all the evil he has allegedly done over the centuries!!!!
You are not alone! 💕
You are 100% correct!
