The story is that the Russians were closing in on Warsaw and the Polish people rose up to fight the Germans. The Russians stopped their advance and allowed the Germans to crush the Polish resistance so they didn't have to do it after the war.

@@annakinzel4212 - nah. What would you expect from a country with most mass shootings in the whole world (even one month is proving that, and there is even Wikipedia entry just for it), poor education standards, and poor employee protection (hell I have almost 28 days of holidays in EU, not including sickness leave time, or almost 6 months of pay maternity leave and more, including normal working hours - so I can have a balanced private life too), and that is not even including any medical insurance. Even ambulance, 1 week in a hospital, cancer treatment - it is "free". And I know, it won't bankrupt me and my family.
Yeah I know, it is not free as such - but I pay probably 2% of my monthly pay check for that. Not a big deal, when anything else is "free" after it (medical wise). And that is not even talking about spending money on military contractors, instead of education, and more.
But it all make sense, if you think about US - as a large corporation, where people are treated like a commodity. Then... it all make sense.

The Polish home army had been in hiding during a lot of WWII. As the Russians approached Warsaw in 1944, the Poles came out and started fighting the German occupiers. They expected the Russians to come in and help, but that help never came. Russia let the Germans squash them before attacking.
This was at the 2012 Polish Woodstock festival , before Hannes and Tommy. Robin Back on drums, and Thobbe Englund on guitar with Chris.

Sabaton has some of the best stage shows around and their live shows are very high energy. This concert was outrageous, even for the Euro festivals that tend to have massive crowds, with 600K in attendance. During the performance of 40:1 they actually unfurled a giant Polish flag from the stage that covered the front section of the crowd. Chris O already covered the meaning of the song and the lineup change and I would just add this was their 2nd lineup change. Their original drummer and guitarists left to form the band Civil War, who also do songs based on historical themes. Check out their vlogs of the Sabaton tours, they are a hoot. Looking forward to more Sabaton. Stay safe, God bless, and keep rocking.

Warsaw uprising took place in 1944 against Nazi occupants. Russian army just watched the slaughter of the Polish people and resistance fighters on the other side of the river doing nothing. No help was given, and even the western Allied forces help through airdrops was hindered, which made it very difficult = no assistance from Russians. Stalin saw the Warsaw city defenders and Polish resistance fighters as enemy of Russia. So Germans did the work Stalin would have done himself latest after occupation of Poland anyway.

you are correct. the song is about the Warsaw Uprising. (and yes this show was just outside Warsaw with a crowd of around 650 000 people). The only Polish lyics here was 'Warszawo, walcz!' that means "Warsaw fight!"
    here is the lyrics:
    Warsaw rise
Do you remember when, when the Nazis forced their rule on Poland
1939 and the allies turned away
From the underground rose a hope of freedom as a whisper
City in despair, but they never lost their faith
    Women, men and children fight
They were dying side by side
And the blood they shed upon the streets
    Was a sacrifice willingly paid
    Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
    1944 help that never came
    Calling Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
Rise up and hear the call
History calling to you, 'Warszawo, walcz!'
    Spirit soul and heart
In accordance with the old traditions
1944 still the allies turn away
    Fighting street to street
In a time of hope and desperation
Did it on their own and they never lost their faith
    Women, men and children fight
They were dying side by side
And the blood they shed upon the streets
    Was a sacrifice willingly paid
    Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
    1944 help that never came
    Calling Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom
Rise up and hear the call
History calling to you, 'Warszawo, walcz!'
All the streetlights in the city
    Broken many years ago
Break the curfew, hide in sewers
Warsaw, it's time to rise now
All the streetlights in the city
    Broken many years ago
Break the curfew, hide in sewers
Warsaw, it's time to rise now
    Warsaw city at war
Voices from underground, whispers of freedom

Warszawo Walcz means Warsaw Fight! But Warsaw is in the Vocative case, so he’s giving the city an almost human identity, as if he’s speaking to the very soul of Warsaw.

As always, I love your natural, natural reactions to good music... seeing you smile and listening in awe is a pleasure to watch. I hope you'll enjoy the long journey through the Sabaton rabbithole 🙂

Great song, I really love Sabaton, and again reading all the comments, everything has been explained.
The festival can’t use the name “Woodstock “ anymore because of legal issues with the original old Woodstock. It’s called “Bloodstock” now. 🫶🤘
