This was a live performance in a small club just before she passed away later that same year ! Eva Cassidy is absolutely captivating and mesmerizing in her vocal delivery ! One of the most underrated and sadly unknown singers in the USA ! Her stardom came posthumously when she was heard over the airwaves on BBC 2 in the UK two years later ! Shortly afterwards, the compilation album Songbird climbed to the top of the UK Albums Chart, almost three years after its initial release. The chart success in the United Kingdom and Ireland led to increased recognition worldwide. Her posthumously released recordings, including three number-one albums and one number-one single in the UK, have sold more than ten million copies.[ Amazingly the UK brought the attention to the world of this tremendous singer and I am very thankful for that ! She should be an American treasure and years later the world has taken notice ! I would suggest her rendition of "Fields of Gold " and "Songbird " as other wonderful songs to react to ! Personally I want to thank you for introducing Eva to your listeners and all the You Tube community it is so much appreciated ! Keep up the great work and keep posting my friend ! Your channel is so important and needed in the You Tube world ! Sending mush thanks and love from Canada ! 👍🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️❤️❤️

The small club where all her songs were recorded was owned by Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac) who organized the recordings and pushed the recordings to be played on BBC2. Before she died Mick organized her meetings with recording companies but they wanted to change her sound and arrangements so she turned them down.

Eva sang this song live at Blues Alley in D.C. in 1996...she was very sick and in pain from advanced stage cancer at the time which was the reason for the break in her voice during the last line of the song, yet she still delivered an amazing performance. Eva died at age 33 shortly after this was recorded. Since her death all of her previously unheard recordings have been released on several CD's and download and streaming services. Every one of her songs is well worth having and listening to...Eva was truly an old soul and a deeply emotional and powerful singer.

It’s always been bittersweet to know the world did not discover her until she passed away from cancer. All three are now deceased. Great reaction! All of her covers on the Songbird album should be heard. Her guitar playing was exceptional too. She had perfect pitch and excellent voice control.

A little over 20 years ago on a cross country trip from Atlanta to Los Angeles with my adolescent son, we had stoped for gas somewhere out west. A nice lesbian couple at the next pump asked if we had far to drive. When I told them we had another 1000 miles or so, they reached into their console and pulled out the Eva Cassidy CD that contains this song. Take this, they said. It will make your journey more pleasant. I was pretty touched at their generosity even though I had never heard of Eva Cassidy before. As we drove away, I popped the CD into the player. They were right. It made the rest of the trip much more pleasant.

Now she’s immortal thanks to the folks who can listen and feel the depth of her talent. There is a short video on RUclips of Mick Fleetwood talking about how he tried to get her a break. Her whole story would make a sad but deserving premise. BTW, you are very beautiful.

She didn’t actually flatten the note, it’s the same last note as in the original melody but she changed the chord underneath it to give it a different feeling to what you were expecting, before resolving to the final chord. It’s the definitive version of this song for me, I never paid any attention to the lyrics before hearing Eva’s take on it. Very moving.

I didn’t read all the comments so my take of the break in her voice at the end of the song is that she was sick leading up to and during this performance. She has the voice of an angel. She is probably doing a lot of solos in heaven right now with the angelic choir.

Most people are so blown away by her voice and the choices she makes with it, they overlook the quality of her guitar playing. The guitar probes the melody to flesh out some very interesting choices as well. It's almost like she's performing a duet with herself, given the depth, quality and complexity of both of her "voices".

Brett, you just discovered one of the rarest and most beautiful voices ever recorded. Sadly, Eva left us too soon due to cancer. She knew she was ill when she made this recording, one of a dozen songs she sang that night at the Blues Alley jazz club. If you want to hear her do her magic with another song, listen to her version of Sting's Fields of Gold. Years later after she had gone, Sting discovered Eva's music. He was blown away by her rendition of his song and put a copy of her Songbird CD into record producer David Foster’s hands who quoted him saying, “‘If you want to hear the greatest version of my song ever’-he didn’t say it in an egotistical way-he said, ‘listen to Fields Of Gold with this girl, it’ll change your life.’ And her voice is life-changing, she’s that spiritual.” BTW, when AGT's Heidi Klum hit the Golden Buzzer for Angelina Jordan's version of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody they played Eva Cassidy's version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. You can hear the lines 'Where dreams really do come true." They certainly did for Angelina that memorable night. Love your animated knowledgeable reactions.

She sung this in January. She was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in June or July and then she died in November & all these happened in 1996,. She had had a malignant mole several years earlier & evidently they didn't get all of it because it did come back in her bones and her lungs. She was also playing her acoustic guitar and she had a child the night this was recorded. É--va was very shy but very gifted. She definitely left us way too soon.

This is about the tenth different reaction to this I have heard in the past two weeks. I want to say, if I hear this a thousand more times, I will be forced to burst into tears of joy every time within the first four notes she plays on that guitar. If someon was to drill holes into my tear ducts, the water would not flow any easier. I am so totally moved by this woman's passion and ability to interpret a song by her singing and guitar playing. So so sad that in her time it was so hard to find a Record Label that would agree to record all the different genres she wanted to sing in. Even the company that recorded this actually failed. She passed away from cancer shortly after this was recorded back in 1996. I believe the song was originally written for the movie The Wizzard of Oz and sung beautifully by the very young Judy Garland who was the star of the movie, back in 1939. Others have recorded the song very nicely, in particular in recent years by Tommy Emmanuel strictly as a guitar instrumental. He did it very much in a style that paralleled Judy's singing of it. But you know God has a way of taking someone very specially gifted by Him, and transcending it through time from 1996 to to a World that needs to be touched and lifted out of very troubling times because of a wicked World, and making this song one of the most emotionally transformed things of beauty, even 28 years after her tragic death. Eva Cassidy went from covering this song to completely owning it and by doing so has changed many many lives for the better, AMEN and AMEN.

She sings it like it is a song about longing. Which it is. This is a song of everyone, even birds can go over the rainbow where skies are blue...but not her. Thank you for your reaction.

It's interesting that you say this gives a "jazzy" feel and sometimes people look down on that. There are several excellent docs available here on YT about Eva's life, and in one of them, they talk to the head of a record label that offered her a recording contract, but they are a jazz label and wanted her to exclusively go in that direction, and she said she couldn't limit herself to any one genre- if she wanted to do a gospel song, or a blues song, or a pop song, or a ballad, she wanted the freedom to express herself. She had the most amazing talent to transform iconic or very well-known songs into her own versions but still keeping the spirit of the original. If you haven't already, you should definitely listen to "Fields of Gold", "Imagine", and "Time After Time". I think you'll be completely blown away by her artistry.

Yes the original version was sung by Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz early in the movie.

  • @jamesdrynan

Music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Yip Harburg, the song was written for Judy Garland to sing in The Wizard of Oz from 1939. MGM executives cut the song from the movie because they thought it slowed down the film. The producer, Arthur Freed, told L. B. Mayer, " The song stays, or I go. " He won. All that to say what this young lady does with the song is magical, reinventing the melody with a poignancy few have ever reached.

Many people (voice trainers etc) are over-reacting to Eva Cassidy singing “ Over the Rainbow”. Eva is a great musician who understands the lyrics of the song & the emotions that go with the songs. Every song Eva sang became her song. Listen to the way she sang Autumn Leaves, Danny Boy, Chain of Fools etc etc. Her version of these songs are the best.
RIP Eva. God bless you & keep you.

Yes, she is singing jazz. Back in 1969 Chad Mitchell did it, and did it (basically) this way (you can hear it in YT). Hers was the next time I heard it this way and some others have also done it similarly. Check out Eva's Autumn Leaves. I never paid attention to the words before hearing her version. I don't like it sung by anyone else, although I like instrumental versions of it. I'm surprised that people have shared songs that I like but didn't think others had even noticed or liked, and you have been impressed by them as well. .

She had a gift and was taken away far too soon. She turned down a major record deal because she preferred to sing the songs she wanted to in the way she wanted and not follow the industry big shots. I don't know the timeline of events, but I believe she knew she was sick when this was recorded.

Eva Cassidy is one of the greatest female vocalists I've ever heard due to her tone, control, phrasing and range and her arrangements and guitar playing brought her songs to another level. This was recorded live in a jazz club in the Washington DC area and she tragically died of metastatic melanoma just a few months after this was recorded.

This performance is from 27 years ago and it sounds like it was recorded yesterday. the sound mixing, reverb, and guitar mic mixing is perfect. She understood how to do perfect sound mixing, as well as perfect guitar playing and singing. She died later that year from cancer in 1996 at the age of 33. RIP.
