Having served in Indian Army and being posted at Srinagar Valley in the thick of insurgency in 1993 to 1995, I can say this episode has brought back memories of those eventful three years. Many events like occupation of Hazrat Bal mosque by terrorists, Cherra re sharif operation, and many many operations to flush out terrorists just flash in my memories.
Very very tense period that was which many army persons could not survive.

The army high command has stymied the true potential of the Para sf. They haven't even bothered to seperate the airborne infantry and the SOF. all clubbed into same regiment and worse in last 20 years they have just converted a lot of airborne btns into sf. What JFK did to the green Berets in 70's is what the army has done to the para sf. They have diluted a small elite secretive force into a super infantry commando force which are used on the whims of CI CT op commanders and not strategically.
Jaffna university heli drop was actually one of the truest SOF like operation conducted by the para sf and the same op exposed the organizational and force structure weaknesses in our sf. We still don't have a dedicated special op aviation regiment for insertion and extraction, nor do we have a dedicated tactical intel and support group to conduct effective special operations.

    Hello,
Kudos on a very comprehensive and sober discourse on the Indian Special Forces.
The most correct part about his discourse was summarising the role of the Special Forces - reconaissance.
Where he gets it incorrect and I sincerely wish he did some more research was on the role of the Garud Special Forces. Like their counter parts from the Army & Navy, the air force element is also into active counter insurgency operations in J&K where they have earned their combat honours.
The main role of the Garuds are offensive aviation operations, akin to the Special Tactical Teams of the USAF, Sheldag & Unit 669 from Israel.
Whike they are located in various bases of the Air Force, their roles hold a strong offensive character operating in small denominations of 4.
Also, there is a technical distinction between Special Forces & Commando. Special Forces are specialised commandos characterised by their ability to exist and operate in depth.

Sometimes, I think won't it be more sensible for Indian Navy to have an Amphibious expeditionary Marine force like US Marines, Royal Marines, Russian Naval Infantry etc.
This Amphibious expeditionary Marine can also act as a Talent pool for MARCOS.

Almost the entire focus was on Para commandos. Would love to know more about Marcos and how they are different from the Para. Marcos would be the equivalent of Navy SEALS, so how good are the Indian Marcos?

Tier 1, Tier 2 & Tier 3 is a budget based concept. US mei DEVGRU & CAG are Tier 1 because they come under JSOC which has a supreme funding, while Socom is Tier 2, hence all your SEALs, Green berets etc..and Tier 3 is simply conventional military

First, these 'tiers' within special operations forces are only/mostly a US-based concept.
Second, these 'tiers' are not official levels.
Third, India does not have any such 'tier' list/levels -- neither in the military, nor in the paramilitary community.

It is stupid to give ranking to armed forces since every nation has its own unique requirements. What matters is can you get the job done efficiently when there is need. We all know that traditionally we were not keen on arming para sf with latest equipments and some improvement have only happened in last decade. We need to provide extra support ecosystem for advanced training and new high tech equipments usage. Our boys are can beat anyone but with limited resources you can only do so little

It is "Garud" not "Garudaa". At least as Indians, it is expected from us, to pronounce our cultural and historical names with a good accent, unless it is someone from a foreign country who doesn't know about our culture. The Armed forces use Sanskrit names and also maintain their dignity, that's why they are professionals! But we should stop ourselves from showing off, our culture and language as 3rd class.
