India and France are negotiating a Rs 50,000-crore deal for 26 Rafale Marine (Rafale M) fighter jets. If finalised, these aircraft will be deployed on the Indian Navy's aircraft carriers, INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya.
Why the Rafale M? The French Rafale M emerged as the frontrunner against its competitor, the American Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet.
Why does the Navy need a new fighter jet? The Indian Navy’s current fleet, primarily composed of ageing Sukhoi jets, is becoming obsolete. This decline in capability is driving the urgent need for new, modern fighters.
But how does the Rafale M differ from the IAF’s Rafale? Interestingly, the Rafale M predates the Air Force version. Despite this, France completed the delivery of all 36 Rafale jets to the Indian Air Force in December 2022, following a Rs 59,000-crore deal signed in September 2016. Why didn't the Navy and Air Force consolidate their orders together? A joint deal could have potentially reduced post-purchase costs.
And why the repeated trials? If the government had already determined that the Rafale M was the best choice, why did they conduct another contest only to choose the same fighter jet again?

42:40 Navel MiG29s were deployed because of two reasons, N MiG29 are agile and quick to deploy and need a smaller runaway as in Laddak oxygen level is low and therefore you need a longer runway to gain the flying momentum.
Why is there no mention of TEDBF? The Indian Navy has heavily invested in TEDBF.
It would take 5 to 10 years for Rafale M to be delivered from the order date. As the Dassault books are filled with orders in hundreds. This delay in this war looming times is unjustifiable.

Why Indian Navy not choose FA18 with F414 EPE, except geo politics (arm twisting) of USA. Also can't understand why Tejas MK2 not come with F414 EPE(110KN). Why Indian Airforce always choose 2nd best option.
Naval Fighter vs Airforce fighter......comparison itself is moot. Only medieval Navies and Airforces are stuck in those comparison. Pretty soon both of these job profiles will be in history book. Next generation Navies and Airforces are focussed on how to make that leap, those generation behind will belobor on that moot point.
Mig 29 especially K series was always a peice of crap and will remain so. Russians know it, once they sold whole of their lot never went back to it. Indians were the only fools in the town to pay for it in cash. For equipment that China rejected and even Russian Navy thought was good riddance.
Can we please get a podcast on the HR policies of Government organizations including PSU’s where Top scientists leave organizations such as HAL, ARDE, DRDO due to bad HR policies related to promotions and a lack of focus on retaining important talent. e.g Sanjay Sharma quitting HAL?

Why would Russia buy Brahmos when it has the P-800 Oniks which is essentially the same missile. Plus it has the Khinzal which is hypersonic.

Navy has lca Tejas which they could use but they have trashed it for imported hardware.
Why are we not looking at Stealth fighters like F22 or F35 for this navy fighters deal? Apparently Rafael M is also not cheap. Even if we get half the numbers of F35 for the money, they will be worth every penny, give China is fielding J20 across LAC. Quality matters and world powers who we will contest in Indian Ocean have stealth fighters. They can be force multipliers on land or sea. I didn’t see this point being brought up in the discussion.

Should buy 26 Rafale M + IAF 60-80 Rafale f4.2/5, with Indian mission capabilities --- both locally build & cost- optimised. And scrap MRFA,, ditch import lobby , no brainer.
The development of Supersonic and Hypersonic missiles has made aircraft carriers and fighter planes obsolete. The purpose of an aircraft carrier is to carry fighter planes with weapons to another country's territorial waters. Fighter planes have limited range. But ships have a longer range. India has no plan to attack faraway countries from India. The aircraft carrier is a white elephant as far as India is concerned. India developed one Aircraft carrier to show other superpowers that India is capable of constructing Aircraft carriers. You, people, have no idea how the procurement of military equipment is being done in the Govt. The present FM knows Aircraft carrier is a white elephant. So Madam will never allow the Indian Navy to purchase Rafale planes for Aircraft carriers. This kind of discussion is a real waste of time.
