Option for you: leave the suspension components alone and have a person who really knows this suspension system dial it in. It would also make video content for all Porsche fans
Problem with that is that the suspension guy would need to setup it up specific to a person & their track level / racing line and not just generally for the car; which is likely how it is already setup.
@@bimmerboi_hutch Many shops can setup a fun street setup that's not specific to anyone driver
This is crazy Matt. Perspective is critical. You see this as a dusty old car. This is my flat out hands down dream car. To me, 30k miles is nothing. I’m going to implement the full 100% poor people lottery mentality on this give a way. I’m going all in! lol.
I feel the same way. I’m totally about to buy more products that I need to for a chance at this.
Likewise. At the moment I'm considering robbing a bank to get into the dustiest of GT3's :D
It's clearly been tracked a good amount and has some pretty extensive problems....I think that's why he calls it dusty
Hey Matt-you are correct. The notchiness you are getting is from worn blocker rings. The blocker rings act as a clutch that brings the input/output shaft speeds in sync to allow the shift sleeve to slide past the synchro teeth. The high shift efforts gets worse at higher engine speed. This wear suggests either a lot of track use or clutch not fully released during shifting.
Agree on a reset with OEM parts, you’ll have a baseline and pivot from there
I would honestly think different front and rear coil spring brands/rates are playing a huge role in the instability of the car.
Tarett is the brand of the suspension components. The Brake wear on the caliper is from stones getting caught between the barrel of the wheel and caliper usually on the racetrack. The previous owner likely put Girodiscs or Ap racing steel rotors for the racetrack
And likely ran 18" wheels for the track. On my 991.2 RS I can only go to 19" wheels. I think the 997 could run 18"s. I might be wrong though.
I remember when Matt was taking the wheels off his GT three with that super long torque wrench. What a Time to be alive. I’m loving this new series.
Matt love watching your brain work as you look over the car for the first time. Great seeing you work it out and make mental notes as to what your next OG move will be…
Really like your idea of taking the suspension back to stock.
Powder coat the calipers in red, black or OG blue to hell with the ugly yellow.
Staying tuned for this series👍
That high torque machine is crazy. If I had a car of this price with center lock wheels it would be a no brainer.
Not just about full droop...since it's that low your starting near the bottom of the shock so limiting how much compression can happen as well . Also the valving hits the no bypass area not allowing fluid to move so you don't bottom out the shock, this will make it ride weird cause there's no dampening happening shock has nowhere to go.. Definitely a janky way to do it on that type of car. That thing deserves better...keep up the good work man
I think I’m in the camp of leaving the suspension alone and have a Porsche specialist dial in the settings. The lower control arm is like the OE pieces, but has replaced the rubber bushings with mono-balls. That adds some stiffness and some harsher ride, but shouldn’t automatically ruin the handling. The shims are the way you add camber. You can have a shop dial it back a bit by changing out the shims. A regular 997 Carrera will have non-adjustable arms.
The adjustable toe links are a common upgrade in the rear. As you lower the car you end up having a harder time getting the right camber setting and being able to dial in some toe-in. The arms make that possible after lowering.
I’d have a good look at the shock and spring combo. Lift-off oversteer makes me think you have too fast of a weight transfer to the rear. I’d look at going back to stock springs and see what that does.
A very strange mix of aftermarket suspension parts
Try to adjust the shift cabels, and check the cabel connections/linkage at the gearbox and adjust if possible, and definitely try to change gear oil, i use Motul 300 Gear 75W-90 before giving it all up for and overhaul
One more note to be aware of is that some of these cars need some of the aftermarket suspension components to have proper alignment depending on your coil-over/ride height set up. I’m sure whoever you’re talking with for suspension knows this but maybe just one more thing to consider before going back to stock components.
I truly can’t grasp what that previous owner was trying to achieve, making a very good car worse step by step. You could get that thing to emotion engineering Joey is a genius and will dial it in perfectly to your taste. Thx 4 the content.
What? Joey does pretty much the same modifications to the cars he builds in terms of offset bushings/adjustable arms.
Caster pucks, rear toe arm, sway bar links and inner monoball for control arms are Tarrett.
Please call me. You were touching the engine case while talking about diff oil. The plug you were touching is a spring loaded detent for an oil passage that you do not remove. I have more experience with these than most. Your shifting issues are probably the cable adjustment which is very simple with numeric.
The black stuff on the calipers is probably just OPR (Other people’s rubber). It gets kicked up into the wheel on track and if you have small clearance to the caliper, it gets caught between caliper and wheel. Rocks can get in there too, but given the amount on the video, it’s almost assuredly all rubber. Use tar remover.
Can’t wait for the give away to go live, saving money aside for it 😎
Really like your approach Matt. Get the 3RS back to factory look and drivability. 👍🏻
That black stuff on the calipers is probably rubber.
Track tires are soft like pencil erasers.
That stuff slings everywhere.
Tar remover should take that off.
Matt absolutely I would put the suspension 100% back to stock and start from there.. well you’re probably looking at $10,000-$15,000 if you replace the dampers with new springs
this car is going to drive you insane with all the things you are finding 😂
You can powder coat/rebuild those calipers, my friend did it on his Panamera, and I think they are basically the exact same calipers.
Have had one of these since new. Rear diff is probably beat. Suggest you change the suspension back to stock. Was never any need to mod it by prior owner(s).
18:59 ..... "fuck...did I pay too much for this?" 😅
I powder coat for a living
A better than OEM job could be done on those Matt.
Easily too
They’re the same as any other 6 piston brake caliper. Appear extremely similar to the 6pot ones on the Subaru STI
Can you do this for me man? Shoot me an email: matt@obsessedgarage.com
You can measure the carbon ceramic rotor thickness with a Carboteq tool instead of weighting them.
For your gear issue check when the clutch has been changed I did change mine @ 30k km
The black on the top of the calipers is melted rubber from the track. The red parts are Tarrett engineering
I can't wait to win this!
I'm not by any means a Porsche expert, but a proper MT/ gear oil change could remedy the notchy shifting. A synchro engagement problem can really only be determined while the gears are spinning under load though. If you're certain the same feeling is observed shifting with the car off, then it could just be worn/binding linkage. You also said the car sorta jumped out when cornering slowly - this sounds like the differential might be disengaging either by slight wheel hop (which is probably normal due to suspension adjustment) or by worn limited slip function; thus causing lateral jerk sensation.
that's a great point...stepping out under a 25mph turn definitely seems too slow to put any kind of load on the car (or lack thereof) to provide the kind of feedback matt is talking about. definitely could be something odd with the rear diff!
You can get the calipers refinished
Note there is guys out there that do it right and completely disassemble the calipers before powder coating
I find it hard to believe it needs a trans rebuild. Jeez. I bet it’s the shifter.
Matty, there’s gotta be some one that can repair/ replace seals positions on Brembos/ Porsche calipers that can re condition them! Maybe it’s not worth the cost vs replacement?
I'd love to see you rebuild the brakes yourself. You could replace the seals also since they've had hard miles.
Suspension components look like Tarett engineering possibly. Also might want to check out motor/trans mounts before spending $10k+ on a transmission rebuild. Numeric cables also need to be adjusted correctly as others have said.
Loving the videos on this beauty!
Go with a KW track suspension
Agree (or Ohlins). It’s a track car keep it a track car.
Omg those red seat belts with yellow calipers. My ocd is going crazy every time I see this car. The 2 colors clash. Those seat belts gotta be black or yellow. Or change the calipers to red.
That is stupid. What do brakes on the exterior have to do with seat belts in the interior?
@@ObsessedGarage u can see it when the windows r down. It’s just not tied all in together. It bothers me. Surprised it doesn’t bother u. I’m sure someone in the Porsche community would be happy to trade black ones for the red. The red and yellow just make me think of McDonalds
That's a nerd old man move. That at goofy striped seat inserts with vinyl stripes all over the car.
@@ObsessedGarage stripes all over r horrible. Just would overall look better if it was tied in together. Even just black seat belts. The red and yellow just clash. But I like 99.9% of what u do so I guess this is the one thing I don’t like haha.
Obviously the dungeon guy wants to sell you that gear package and all the other stuff
Dungeon 🤣
Did you get to negotiate some money off the top for the issues this car has?
Matt said it was $260k? Surely you’d want some discount considering everything.
Just get the caliper stripped, powder coated and rebuilt. MUCH cheaper than another set. I bet Tommy knows a guy.
Street awesome will be so fulfilling!!!
Original owner tracked the hell out of this thing. He then made it "pretty" to the untrained eye and sold it.
Factory all the way 👌🏽
I 100% agree with putting some of those factory parts back on and its too many factors right now to try and troubleshoot/resolve the stepping out. My question is.... since it was tracked a lot, what the hell setup did the previous owner have on it? Must have been pretty fast the rear end stepping out at 25mph... maybe the car is dial to be under load?
Do you know who the previous owner was? Are you able to connect with them? May be beneficial to if possible, to get his setup info
Transmission issue, to me since its gear specific, gets worse with speed/rpm screams transmission issues... sounds like this car has been launched A LOT.
I’m commenting as I watch. I’d just have the calipers re-powder coated. It isn’t that uncommon
CGT had a red or blue center lock depending on the side of the car
God My buddy that works for Tesla needs this Hi Torque gun in his life for his new GT3…
We’ve gotta set a budget on this one matt 😅, has to be perfect but also appreciated if it’s a giveaway car , yes but don’t go too pricey also maybe spec the suspension parts reach out maybe wright Motorsports in Ohio speak with Tim .
This is gonna be fun
Send to Charles n Jamie with a blank check 😂
Ok 👌🏿 what an entrance 🎉
Find someone to re-powder coat the calipers or rebuild them yourself.
I get that you love the 911 but pour a little more content on the Jahre? Please? 😅
Car disappeared as soon as gt3 showed up haha
@@hm_tcs1469 because its home in GA at the Rental.
Yeah...I hate it. I think I'm going to sell it.
@@ObsessedGarageplease do.. lol
@@ObsessedGarage what happened? You loved the green one so much!?
Matt, your ‘old man’ comments on ‘upgraded’ valve stems and factory stripes will be contradicted in a few years when you start to like them. ;)
ha, ha... True.
Consider Surface Transforms carbon ceramics and save the OEM
I don’t even get why someone would change the springs on a GT car. Porsche setup this car perfect from the factory ..inside adjustable out of the factory. I feel like who ever have this car just jacked up the suspension because, they I didn’t know what the hell they were doing. 😢
No car is perfect from the factory. It can always be improved.
Yeah, this is what happens when people purchase cars like this and I don’t know what they’re doing. The average person goes out and buys stupid springs and jacks up the stock setup. .. guarantee you if you were to put the Porsche OE springs back on the car, the car will feel a world of a difference..
It's usually from the move from aftermarket back to stock where it goes wrong. Most people just jank it back together as cheaply and quickly as possible.
Can have just a little preload on those springs lol.
You need some Wiha allen keys, way better than your jank set.
Wiha is a Wera knockoff.
Why not get rid of the numeric?
I did take it out.
Any news on the gt3 touring?
could it be bad bushings?
Don't buy new calipers or rotors. Have them properly refurbished, far far cheaper. This is a giveaway car not your dream investment car!
Go back to stock suspension setup , out of all the cars you have had the Porsche GT3 RS should be good from factory for street fun.
981????
That's a boxster never had a the Metzger LOL you mean 996?
Mean cayman oops I was thinking 986
Did this car start off white with gold rims? Did the previous owner wrap it?
No, white gold on grey black.
Does anyone know roughly what a dry ice under carriage cleaning costs? Is like $500 or $2500?
i believe it is job by job specific - depending on the condition of the car and how many man hours it will take to get it clean. I know the dry ice machine in and of itself is $10,000.
Notchy shifting only when car is cold?
No, it's all the time.
I’ll never understand why people think they know better than Porsche themselves, when changing the handling with 3rd party hardware haha
Extensive changes that is anyway, lowering springs and maybe even spacers are ok, massive geometry changes are asking for problems really
Porsche makes a very good sports car for the street. If you want a more race car feel you'll need to make some changes. An alinement and some added negative camber is an excellent place to start. Lowering springs without proper alinement changes will spell trouble for the handling.
Having full suspensions on my rides and most of the viewers here. I feel like piece mealing the suspension will have you chasing for more time then is allotted.
Like others have said, go with a full kit with a defined handling spec.
Does Dundon have anything on tap for you?
Dundon does MCS stuff.
Lets do this!
Seems like a waste for a guy who doesn't track his cars....
It's an investment and a car that will be given away....
@Mister Hutch lol believe me this is no charity. It's all the views and youtube revenue.....
@@flsupraguy YT revenue is peanuts compared to what people buy from OG store....
Then this is not the channel for you. But you just gave him some views to generate some revenue 😂
@@flsupraguyhaha you must be new here….
wow this is the most janky vehicle you have ever owned and probably the most expensive, LOL.
Maybe this can help with the axle lift ruclips.net/video/2H8NN62JgSQ/видео.html
Before you start spending any money on mechanical parts… de-nib those tires lol
Don’t waste $6000 on new breaks. Jus clean them up best you can. It’s a giveaway car. Don’t go too crazy with it.
You don’t know Matt.
