Sort of brings back memories. My father was an air traffic controller there in the sixties when it was RAF St. Mawgan. Couple of Avro Shackleton squadrons based there at the time. We lived at the former RAF Base at St. Eval.
@@szrsingle They were still operating from St. Eval when we arrived there in December 1956. Everything moved about a year or so later. The deserted air base became our playground. I visited the church in 2017. Memories of 'church parade' with the cubs and scouts.
After an air day there in the 60s we were in a traffic jam at the end of the runway there when an English Electric Lightning came down the runway rotated almost vertical, switched on the afterburners and disappeared. The sight and the noise was one of the most awesome aviation experiences I had.

The current VC-25A/747-200 is an old plane. I believe is even still requires a flight engineer, which is a mostly redundant job nowadays since it's all fly by wire 😆 I think they should be getting some 747-8's to replace the current Air Force One in the next few years.
@@KissMyFatAxe Yes it does . It basically is a 747-200 Airframe. It took a long time to finish the modifications the USAF wanted . By that time the 400 had been in service for some time. It is not a 200 though, I cannot find out much about its specifications besides the obvious things like engines.I remember seeing a photo of the 2 of them without Engines at Boeing, Everett Plant in the Flight International magazine in the early 90’s

Interesting to learn that Newquay Airport is the old St mawgan. I did part of my National Service at nearby St Merryn. Was told that St.Mawgan had the longest runway in Britain and was an ideal landing place for American planes crossing the Atlantic. We used the runway for marshalling aircraft flying off passing Aircraft Carriers. My next posting was to RNAS Eglington which is now Londonerry City Airport.

There was a 24 hour patrol of Typhoons and possibly F15's just off of the coast at 30,000 feet for the whole three days. You could see them, plus a tanker and an AWACs just going round in hundreds of large circles.
RAF St Mawgan started out in in 1939 as a couple of Nissan Huts down in the far south west corner of one of its fields, TREBELSUE FARM (TR8 4AN), and grew into one of the largest airfields in the UK. Like Arthur Compton, it has always been of interest to me (a Newquay boy) also having ties. My Mother was a WAAF stationed there at St Mawgan. My Father trained as a Lancaster Rear end Gunner at nearby St Eval and met my Mother in 1942 at a dance organised on the St Mawgan Camp by the RAF staff. Over the years, many Newquay people relied on employment at the drome with constant Airforce personnel from around the World mainly Yanks, all remember this special place .

I lived within sight of RAF St. Mawgan for 20 years yet initially I dint recognise the place from the video. It looks like the clay tips are just up the road from St. Columb, which they really are. Kernow/Cornwall must really be a tiny little land mass. Newquay to Penzance used to be a day out- now even though my state is the same size as Cornwall that distance is 1/2 an hour jaunt to nearest big town.
I live in Whitemoor right next to the tips, the biggest change over the years is that most of the "Clay Alps" have now grown over and changed to green and brown, I worked at St Mawgan for over 10 years the change is quite dramatic.

I moved to Cornwall in the late 80's age 10 and managed to get stationed at St Mawgan for over 10 years in the 90's and early 2000's, I've stayed/ worked in a few parts of the UK but only ever lived in Cornwall.
You'd think but it seemed to maintain that initial rate of climb for a long time. It flew over us in Dorset and looked to be >FL300 (no track on FR24). I guess if you're the biggest target on the planet, you need to get as far away from the planet as possible for as long as possible.
Talk about saving the environment and the planet..... how many planes and helicopters plus the fleet of road vehicles just to transport one President a few miles. One rule for politicians, one for the rest of us "plebs" :-(
