- It's 80 degrees in the valley on a beautiful summer evening. The tranquil sounds of crickets and Western Chorus frogs can be heard all around, as we wait and listen for our train. Running approximately two and a half hours late, Amtrak 6 finally greets us, piercing through the final tunnel on Union Pacific's Moffat Subdivision. Amtrak 7 leads the consist, followed by Amtrak 19 and of course, Amtrak 300; the newly acquired locomotive for Amtrak (Siemens ALC-42). Making its way across the nation, destined to the northeast corridor for testing, I took the opportunity to catch it and met up with railfans Longmont Railway and Longmont railfan (known on RUclips) to chase it down Union Pacific's Moffat Subdivision. Later that evening, I met up with railfan 510trackside to catch it on BNSF's Brush Subdivision. Sit back and enjoy!
This is the most amazing Filming of a P42 set I have ever seen. Love the Amtrak content. The weather was beautiful! And I am quite excited for the new locomotive, but sad to see the P42 go..
Thank you for the comment! That really means a lot to me! Glad I had somewhat adequate lighting for these shots. I too am sad to see the legendary Genesis P42s go, but they have served the communities quite well, and I'm sure the next fleet of locomotives will do the same.
@@andre100BNSF Yeah, by the looks of things the ALC-42 seems fantastic. I have no complaints with that loco so far.
@@zacharyhale1681 I heard that the P42s are staying for another while after the Chargers arrive
@@RascalTrainz They are yes. But their numbers will slowly be going down until 2025 when not a single P42 will be left in service with Amtrak
@@zacharyhale1681 hello
How are you doing
That is beautiful! The paint job is the best
Me personally, I like phase 5 paint. Its a little heavy on the blue in my opinion but it matches the new Acela sets quite well.
Absolutely beautiful catch man!
Thanks! Happy you enjoyed the video!
Great video, and a great catch, we put that loco on train #6 here in the Oakland yard and I personally the one who Air tested the train before it departed the yard, the loco has that new car smell inside even though it is a loco lol.
That's awesome! I would've loved to do the same! I'm hoping to catch the heritage unit #301 soon!
@@andre100BNSF I work for Amtrak in the Oakland yard where this train is serviced and wyed and sent back east. these units are sent from Sac to our yard to be added to train #6 when I'm working I could message you and give you the heads up if I'm not off work of course.
@@MB_Videos1 Yeah, that would be awesome!
Excellent video!!! Thank you for sharing your video skills.
Haha no problem! Glad you guys enjoyed it!
Wow that's absolutely incredible
Thanks! It was definitely a sight to see!
@@andre100BNSF no problem and yep
The P-42’s served well over the years. A few will be kept for museums around the country. But, it’s time for a change. Question is whether one ALC Siemens will be enough to pull a nine car train set on the Zephyr. Can’t wait to find out.
Indeed these will be missed. But they have served a long life with Amtrak and have served the communities very well. The ALC-42s are rated the same horsepower as the GE P42s however. We shall see!
Probably, but generally not advised.
The Pacific Surfliner has a short 3.0% grade but Donner Pass has a substantial section of 2.7% (below Emigrant Gap). Freight has helpers but clumsy for Amtrak.
Horses and effort curve aside, grip can be an issue, particularly during the grimy seasons. Being out in the wilderness for many hours means redundancy is preferred. Not to mention going easier helps preserve the equipment. Habitual excess power enables adding random stuff without doing the hard math, or having different power rotation per season.
Love how the frogs set the tone for the pre-dawn sequence. Excellent audio and video! Subbed.
Awesome thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 😊 I agree, the frogs did set a rather calming mood to the video. The joys of mother nature!
I really liked this video! Nice job man!
Thanks 😊
Aw that's nice. I can't wait to see the heritage unit painted to look like 4316.
Yeah, exactly. I can't wait to catch that one!
The ALC 42 is a very good successor to the P42s running the Amtrak trains in my view, even though the P42s have been great workhorses through the time
Splendid video collection!
Thank you for the kind comment! Glad you enjoyed it!
OMG I HAVNT SEEN YOU IN SO LONG , LAST VIDEO I SAW WAS THE AMTRAK WITH THE HIGH SPEED ENGINE
Huh? This was the only catch of Amtrak I've uploaded to this channel.
@@andre100BNSF wait nvm that was another channel but it was that same spot
@@railfanningjay Ah ok.
@@andre100BNSF my bad but awsome video
@@railfanningjay Haha, it's all good. And thanks!
Great catch! Subbed!
Haha, thanks! I appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! I was also there!
Haha thanks! There was quite a bunch at the first spot for sure!
New Subscriber!
Haha, thanks man! I appreciate it! This video blew up more than I thought lol.
Too bad, even with the extra charger Amtrak and Union Pacific couldn't get #6 into Denver on time. Nice effort on the photography.
Are you planning to catch 301?
You'd think if Amtrak wanted to showcase their new Siemens loco's they'd put them right at the head-end. 🤦♂️
I like it. Perhaps we could call Phase VIII the REDWING Scheme? If the 300 is how they will indeed paint them all? I like it! But desire for all passenger cars, except for Surfliners, Amtrak California, etc to revert to Phase III. At present, am nor very happy with leaving some cars in other paint schemes, but all brand new equipment, plus all rebuilt Viewliners into Phase III. (!!!) LET IT ROLL WITH PHASE III ON INTERCITY!!!
Cool shots! What camera are you using?
Thanks! It's a Sony FDR-AX53 4K camcorder.
Hey buddy number #301 will be leaving the Oakland CA yard in the morning on train 6 just to let you know 👍
Awesome, thanks. It'll probably be 5 hours late, unfortunately.
@@andre100BNSF LOL yep
Was the ALC 42 powered on this train or just being towed?
It was in tow. The P42s were powering the train. They were transporting it to the Northeast Corridor for future test runs.
Awesome catch what camera do you use?
Thanks! It’s a Sony FDR-AX53. Bought it from Best Buy but it is quite pricey. Great entry-level camera for 4K footage, I must say.
Heyy I have the same camera!
@@DivergingClearProductions Haha nice! I love mine. Going to get a mic for it soon. The stock one is nice but looking for that crisp audio as well.
@@andre100BNSF Nice I have the Rode Videomic NTG on mine. It does really well with the rumbling of the trains.
@@DivergingClearProductions How’s the stereo sound come out?
What is your editing program,?
Surprisingly, it is iMovie. Didn't think it could handle 4K as well as it did, but I'm glad it did lol. I've used it as long as I've had this channel.
@@andre100BNSF good to know. Got this device specifically to use that program. Now just to get something up.
@@dennisyoung4631 Yep, should be good to go. It took RUclips longer to process 4K than iMovie to publish to the desktop lol.
Permission to use your footage of BNSF 9999 from about 10 years ago for my series called Alpha Omega focusing on the highest and lowest number on a railroad's roster? I'll give you credit in my video.
Why was it moving so slowly?
There was a bunch of low orders
Trains slow down at the circled tracks to prevent the train from tipping over. They go fast only on straight tracks including in Chicago.
