I started to notice around season 3-4 that anytime red john is mentioned or suspected they play this certain drum sequence. Its a little detail to say hey pay attention, which is a great addition!
It's amazing how they have a great chemistry, almost like the symbol of life and death, meaning that Jane is the represantation of life, improvement, love and Mcallister is the personification of death, destruction, hatred. Red John actually enjoyed Patrick's growth from a con man into a true warrior of justice, in some twisted way, he admired him and perhaps Red John wished he had that sense of justice himself, however he was a victim of his own demise. We can see that Jane was reformed beyond his wildest dreams, but it cost him the loves of his life to get there and that is what life and death is all about, accepting loss and moving on. Once Jane accepted the loss by defeating Red John, he was able to live again and that lead him to new love, Lisbon with whom he had a child, closing the circle. Jane lost his old self completely, but in the end he gained the best version of himself. Red John admired Jane's journey, waited patiently for Jane to become better and better just to take it all away, that was his end game. Much like Death does it Life. Life expands and grows, and in the end Death takes it and the cicle continues.
I'm a little unsure about the phrase love of his life. I have heard her described like that. Obviously that's how he felt about his first wife at the time, it was gutting when she was killed. But what about Lisbon. She's not chicken feed to him. It seems to me that if the love of your life dies then there is no one that's gonna replace her. Once he formed a relationship with Lisbon and it got to the point where they got married, how would he refer to her now?
@@jewelweed6880 I've meant more in a sense of past life, his former life before CBS and Red John, she surely must've been the love of his (past) life to be able to have such a strong urge for revenge all of those years and once he met Lisbon, he started shifting into something else, however he was unable to become a true version of himself until Red John was dead, meaning that to ensure his past life was be gone, Mcallister had to be gone as well.
The sheriff in the first season had a completely different personality than this sheriff, yet everyone but Patrick could see it. This Sheriff McAllister comes across as downright spooky. Still, when he was once of the suspects of being Red John, I couldn't help but remember when he was trying to get Grace off by herself and was interrupted by Rigsby, who almost shot him. I knew that was a loose end and couldn't help but wonder if we'd see more of him. I also suspected him of being the murderer, but never that he was Red John. Even the way he talked was different and he called Patrick "Gizmo." The sheriff became my chief suspect when he was named as one of the seven, and that weird scene with Grace was the reason.
Back when it first aired I didn't think he was Red John but I thought he would be some sort of twist killer that would either be a reopened case or a new murder. When he was mentioned on the list I thought it was another Red Herring.
I love this characters ( the sheriff ) and now that I know that he’s Red John... I like him MORE 😭 damn he’s so scary now everything he say or did or just when he talk to Jane, all of this is scary because we know that Jane is literally in front of the man who killed his wife and daughter and we know that the sheriff is just playing with him. A genius.
It makes so much sense in hindsight that a master manipulator like RJ would pretend to be some dopey, folksy sheriff. What's kind of absurd is that there isn't even really anything stereotypically "backwoods" about Napa Valley, the people there are all super posh wine snobs and yuppies. Which means he's probably putting on the act extra thick.
In S1 E2 McAllister says when seeing the crime scene "People do look diferent after they're dead don't they? haha" Then he plays rock papper scissors with Jane, after mocking him of being a "consultant">clairvoiyant? psychic?" In that episode we see him kinda sad when the family tells about her murdered daugher (the producers didn't know he was gonna be RedJohn)... but he still could feel sad (since we know he regrets doing some murders...he blinked twice...) And in that episode HE FUCKING SCARES Jane-Lisbon and specially VanPelt when he lurks into her silently and asks her if she is ok... being very invasive and not taking a "no" for an answer... Then Rigsby gets out of the plan and pushes RED JOHN to the ground and they almost shoot eachother. Maybe they didn't know who Red John was gonna be but... damn he had a very dark sense of humor and a weird vibe since his first appearance . (Even tho they never shake hands in camera the first time they meet... but Lorelei probably assumed that anyways)
I do agree with most of what you said, but I have analyzed every moment of his appearance in the second episode and he wasn't sad for the family of the victim, he kept giving off vibes of indifference and a look of exasperation or boredom, wanting to get this over with The lack of empathy and inability to feel remorse or guilt are characteristics of a sociopath, something that Red John was defined as. Besides, anyone in his place wanting to get away would blink twice, you don't honestly think that after all these taunts and jabs he took at Jane and how he kept tormenting him with his family's death until the end that he just happens to feel regret now all of a sudden. Never at any point was he hinted to be a person who has the least empathy or morality, which makes sense for such a sociopath.
Anonymous Butterfly yep, i watched the entire series last year and i found him so strange and thought it was weird that no one did anything after he tried to kidnap grace, so i googled sheriff mcallister to see if he was gonna appear in more episodes and i saw that he was red john. i fucking spoiled the best part of the series for myself. 😵
0:54 hahahaha the Sheriff or shall I say red john was terrified of the analyzing look on Patrick’s face so he decided to change the direction of focus. Smart really but this means that if roles were swiped the Sheriff would’ve never caught Patrick.
Wow, double meaning to that conversation.... But i was so struck by how charming he is. Theres sometjing just so riveting that makes you want to come closer. I guess thats rhe sociopathic charm...
This spot felt much more menacing than the big reveal honestly. The reveal put too much emphasis on him strutting his ego and too little on his evil and bloodlust; sometimes he looked almost a little drunk he was enjoying himself so much, but here it's a cat playing with a mouse and wondering how long it'll take before the mouse realizes.

I must confess that the difference between the sheriff in first season and this season turned me off a little bit. I mean, this man appears on ep 2. Then appears only on sixth season, almost ending with a entirely new personality. It seems like the writers had the idea on last minute.
My two favorite characters in the show was J.J. Larouch and Walter Mashburn. I'm glad that neither of them were Red John, though J.J. would have been have been a great choice. Instead of Sheriff McAllister walking in through be back part of the chapel, can you imagine J.J. walking in and saying, "Hello, Patrick?" There would have been too many problems with that, though there also are too many issues with McAllister, as well. For example, how did he acquire and maintain his power? He had no money and everyone knew he was a serial killer. So without money, how did the fate of all those people rest with him? It's just a TV show, meh.
@@davidlockwood8315 They are referring to the time before Lorelei said, "It's a wonder you two didnt become friends when you shook hands." or something like that. That had to be before season 5 I think.
Look at McAllister. His eyes are a dead giveaway. His eyes light up when he sees Patrick. You are in love with him, you SOB! That's why you killed his wife and daughter when you could have just as easily scared the ...out of Jane without killing anyone or tortured and killed Jane himself. " Oh, Mister Jane, can you please tell our viewers what it's like to have not just one, but two psycho sadists in love with you. " 😀😀😀
Apparently the writer only decided who red john was after season 5 finished, they originally intended him to be an entirely new character as opposed to someone we already knew so I don't think the actor knew until close to when he was revealed as red john
Also, you, wouldnt want to lock in, in case something goes wrong. More over, telling the actor might change his performances and tip the hand to the audiences too early.
Yeah, I've always had a really weird feeling about that cause I actually guessed he was RJ when I watched 1x2. I've never really worked out why (probably just because they gave him weird vibes so you thought he might have been the culprit for that ep's murder) but half way through the episode I jokingly said to my family 'I bet he'll turn out to be RJ!'. I'd made a similar guess in episode 1x1 when we met Brett Partridge, when I said 'he'll be a major suspect but he'll turn out not to be RJ.' Cause he felt creepy enough to be suspected at some point but way too creepy to actually be the culprit. Over the following few seasons I forgot about both the McAllister predictions (since he never showed up again, where as Brett had a couple of appearances throughout the years) until the 'hand shake' reveal and I immediately thought 'Was I right all along? Is McAllister going to be a suspect?'. And sure enough by the end of season 5, there he was right next to Partridge on the list. From then on every time he was on screen he kept on giving reasons to suspect him and every piece of evidence against it was never 'conclusive' so by the time he was the only tatooed suspect to 'die' in the explosion I knew he was RJ 100%. I successfully guessed who RJ was 4-5 fully years before Heller actually decided who RJ was and I've always felt weird about that.
Theres a quote from The Mentalist wiki from the actor of red john: "The actor who played him when his identity was finally revealed, Xander Berkeley, said to TV Guide that he was "stunned and flattered" when he discovered that he was Red John, and that "earning this little place in pop-culture history was the last thing I ever expected. Truth be told, I thought I was a red herring""
Did Jane start to suspect him in the scene? He looked so disturbed when the sheriff walked away. I only saw a few episodes of the series. Did he reveal a killer later that night?
IN THE SECOND EPISODE OF THE SERIES, HE'S GOT A MOUSTACHE...IN THE SUSPECT LIST, HIS WHOLE FACE IS COVERED IN FACIAL HAIR. BUT HIS CHARACTER HAS THE FACIAL HAIR/MASK COMPLETELY REMOVED WHEN HE'S SHOWN TO BE RED JOHN.
I wonder when this actor knew he was playing Red John. I assume in episode 3 or whatever when he first appears he had no idea. However did he know in his next episode?
@@bait5257 According to the wiki he has only 1 actor but I can check I guess. They do look different at first, but the longer I watch into the scene they meet the more he looks like it, the early episode is credited to Xander Berkley which the final Red John episode is also credited to. So unless someone else messed up, it's the same actor.
@@bait5257 I'm the source. I watched the anime, I press Print Screen whenever I see images I like, then I paste it into paint, cut out the other stuff and save it. Alternatively there is Puush/Gyazo which take screenshots to. The anime this is from is Fate Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks. Where Rin gives Saver this outfit and Shiro says "I have no idea she liked prim and proper outfits like this"
I like that they made this twist with him appearing quietly very early in the series but it felt more like the character was built up to reappear as antagonist at some point again but not as the mastermind that has been chased for 6 seasons. Also there are a few questions open like: In one episode Jane recognizes a psychopath by his cold reaction to seeing blood. And here he did not figure out what was going with the whole hunting speech? Why did somebody that is this smart called the CBI for help? Especially as he seems to risk that his own crimes are didcovered by them? Why does he risk to attack van Pelt although somebody that smart should know she is a bait? How is somebody with these connections and skills "just" a sheriff?
I think he was just written as a one-off adversarial character who is unimpressed by Jane and a possible suspect for the killing (in that one episode). I think the simple answer is Red John is much more subtle. He's only saying that to toy with Jane because he knows he's a suspect. It's different than someone uncontrollably displaying impulses. That is part of the problem with the ending: why call the CBI, why save Jane's life? His true objective is not to get away. It's to entertain himself, to toy with Jane, and even then the writing doesn't really qualify his "defeat" in a believable way. He's just too capable. As far as the Van Pelt thing, that shows he wasn't intended to be RJ at that point just an episodic character. As far as being just a sheriff, I think he has a certain amount of stature. They don't call him "a sheriff" they call him The Sheriff of Napa County, meaning the top one I imagine. Also he's seen meeting with Bertram and other high ranking characters; they wouldn't waste their time doing that unless he did have stature.
Lot of people forgetting or not knowing when this episode was released, he wasn't RJ. The writers had no idea who RJ was actually going to be for years. They didn't decide until end of s5/while writing out s6. There's many of characters it could just as easily been, there's multiple limited roles that drop hints at them being RJ. His creepy "foreshadowing" is actually just coincidence. But knowing the end helps add a new layer to the whole thing.
@@stephenclark8662 More so because McAllister was a lackluster choice for Red John. It was pretty unbelievable that such an expressional coward could, in fact, be the mastermind to rival Jane's abilities. However, years later, I do kind of enjoy his choice for being revealed as the exact opposite of what we thought he was. Not a horrific shadow in the dark with no sense of mercy, but instead an insecure and pathetic creature in the daylight. Still. My disappointment lingers back and forth.
C Red I think that when Patrick taunted red john in the pilot episode the writers were actually describing red john for us. I mean if you’re not totally insane and need psychiatric help then you most likely hurting other people because you’re a sad pathetic human being that can’t deal with your issues. Although we don’t know why red john kills but that ending he got kinda proves that Patrick was right about him all along. well, Patrick acts all high and mighty aswell pretty often but we also see him literally beg and cry when people are actually going to seriously hurt him. like when Haibach was gonna cut his fingers It's easy to act powerful when you think you're gonna win, but everybody is a loser when they know they are about to die
@@virolo1960 Why? We see him in that episode and that episode alone. He doesn't exude that sense of fear. I wasn't intimidated by that version at all. Then in the later seasons red john got even smarter and seeing McAllister act all creepy and borderline psychotic, while also giving that look to have as if he knows that Jane suspects him since he knew Jane's final list of suspects.
The power to use people, hordes of people, and get them to do your bidding even to their own gruesome detriment, that power didn't stop Charles Manson from becoming a pathetic caged old man, that power didn't stop Jim Jones from being an overweight, sickly paranoiac who took his own life. How many real life villains, no matter how brilliant and persuasive, go out on a high and mighty note? Less than you'd think.

Thanks captain obvious. Any conversation he starts with the people on the list he is thinking "Is he Red John?", well, because they are on the list.
around this time Mccalister knew he was bout to get found
I started to notice around season 3-4 that anytime red john is mentioned or suspected they play this certain drum sequence. Its a little detail to say hey pay attention, which is a great addition!
Hhhmmm
Need to rewatch ))
I suspected McAllister early; this episode nailed it for me.
I just hope you meant something different then that you like a serial killer... 😳🙂
Don't read the comments if you don't know what happens after this
He sounds like Red John at 0:04 - 0:05
I wonder why
Yeah 😂
In S1 E2 McAllister says when seeing the crime scene "People do look diferent after they're dead don't they? haha"
Then he plays rock papper scissors with Jane, after mocking him of being a "consultant">clairvoiyant? psychic?"
In that episode we see him kinda sad when the family tells about her murdered daugher (the producers didn't know he was gonna be RedJohn)... but he still could feel sad (since we know he regrets doing some murders...he blinked twice...)
And in that episode HE FUCKING SCARES Jane-Lisbon and specially VanPelt when he lurks into her silently and asks her if she is ok... being very invasive and not taking a "no" for an answer...
He didn't really regret killing Jane's family, it was a ruse to trick Jane into letting him go.
I do agree with most of what you said, but I have analyzed every moment of his appearance in the second episode and he wasn't sad for the family of the victim, he kept giving off vibes of indifference and a look of exasperation or boredom, wanting to get this over with
The lack of empathy and inability to feel remorse or guilt are characteristics of a sociopath, something that Red John was defined as.
@@Ladybug-ky6he It must be sad! Let me tell you my side. I started the show with the 6th session. :)

0:54 hahahaha the Sheriff or shall I say red john was terrified of the analyzing look on Patrick’s face so he decided to change the direction of focus. Smart really but this means that if roles were swiped the Sheriff would’ve never caught Patrick.
He was the perfect choice imo
The voice matches the scene in the Warehouse
He was always creepy to me
Great acting
Him being red John wasn’t bad but I would have love red John to be somebody that constantly appeared in the show
Or simply mentioned
Damn they added a audio loopback on the phone when he got close enough, that’s attention to detail.
Patricks face at 1:12 he smiles with his face but his eyes renain cold. Very unsettling
Great Scene and acting by both
Wow, double meaning to that conversation....
Sheriff McCallister was the perfect choice. It was someone who you didn't expect, it's original and very real life like. The haters do not understand good story telling.
They should have planned out who was going to be red john from the start instead of waiting 4 -5 seasons to decide
Nah, just that you're too easily impressed. And you mistakenly equate surprise with quality.
@@smurfyday oh boo-hoo. are you one of those tumblr fanfic people who wanted to touch their private parts to some attractive johnie-boy? well sorry sister, but pretty much All serial killers in history looked ugly. so go and be "impressed" somewhere else please and sort out ur problems with ur Dad. were gonna be over here enjoying a godlike actor doing a godlike performance. it was decided later that itll be him - but Season 1 Episode 2 is so Perfect. everything that happens there suggests it might be him. Red John was here!!
HOW WERE WE SO BLIND?! IT'S SO OBVIOUS!
It was obvious because they had already decided he was red john. They literally did not know it was him till season 4 -5. It was a massive slap in the face to fans. They should have planned out who redjohn was from the beginnings
@@adamaslondraya silence. they made several shady characters on purpose so they can later decide who it would be. a show can go in so many different ways dude. it would infact be a slap in the face if they decided at the start. cuz theres so much u can do with a show so many stories u can tell. just make weirdos along the way and then pick whichever fits best the new, longer story instead of some original idea from the start that might no longer fit the longer story uve told. it was planned in a sense since Thomas was just one of many "strange" characters made on purpose to chose from later. and he just fit the bill perfectly. Its not a slap in the face if you arent a little b---tch.

The actor could totally be red john. The actor is good, he was in Nikita.
He was watching Jane wtf.

I must confess that the difference between the sheriff in first season and this season turned me off a little bit. I mean, this man appears on ep 2. Then appears only on sixth season, almost ending with a entirely new personality.
It seems like the writers had the idea on last minute.
Great stuff
My two favorite characters in the show was J.J. Larouch and Walter Mashburn. I'm glad that neither of them were Red John, though J.J. would have been have been a great choice. Instead of Sheriff McAllister walking in through be back part of the chapel, can you imagine J.J. walking in and saying, "Hello, Patrick?"
There would have been too many problems with that, though there also are too many issues with McAllister, as well. For example, how did he acquire and maintain his power? He had no money and everyone knew he was a serial killer. So without money, how did the fate of all those people rest with him?
It's just a TV show, meh.
Does anyone know when Jane and McAllister shook hands?
Rachelle Zielstra season 1 ep2
they met, as already noted, in season 1, ep 2. however, i'm not sure it ever showed them actually shaking hands.
They did not literally shake hands but they played Rock Paper Scissors which requires to shake your hand.
Rachelle Zielstra it was in season 6 if I am not mistaken, I don’t remember which episode.

Oh, don't worry about my dad- he loved me to pieces. Counter. Argue. Prove me wrong.
OMG... 😰😰 Jane, you must realize!
I wonder if the actor knew he was red john from the beggining
Tom Hazell god damn dude. You’re good
Theres a quote from The Mentalist wiki from the actor of red john: "The actor who played him when his identity was finally revealed, Xander Berkeley, said to TV Guide that he was "stunned and flattered" when he discovered that he was Red John, and that "earning this little place in pop-culture history was the last thing I ever expected. Truth be told, I thought I was a red herring""
Jane finally catching Red John should have been the series finale. What were they thinking?
pIgEoN gO fWaP
They were thinking they wanted to show what his life would be after he wasn’t obsessed about revenge.
@@nossenkanter ????
@@warblerab2955 That's where their level of writing was at at this point, they didn't care what they were doing.
@@nossenkanter if true, that is most unfortunate. I can't help but think the show would have been better if they had cared about what they were doing.
At this point Jane knew . . .
No he didn't. Why would he gather all the suspects then and force them to reveal the tattoo?
The answer is a golden chance for Jane to know that he's red John but maybe he was confused
i never thought he would be it
Is it me or anyone else does feel like red john looks like jeff bezos?
Did Jane start to suspect him in the scene? He looked so disturbed when the sheriff walked away. I only saw a few episodes of the series. Did he reveal a killer later that night?
I say, he is the most expected to be red john
He kept all the blood from the animals to leave his calling card
He did redjohn proud
This is a different actor bruh
@@bait5257 According to the wiki he has only 1 actor but I can check I guess. They do look different at first, but the longer I watch into the scene they meet the more he looks like it, the early episode is credited to Xander Berkley which the final Red John episode is also credited to. So unless someone else messed up, it's the same actor.

What Next ?...
No, just a possibility.
He didnt seem sophisticated enough to be the killer
This is not my red john.
He is Red John!!!
No one will gonna believe!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I like that they made this twist with him appearing quietly very early in the series but it felt more like the character was built up to reappear as antagonist at some point again but not as the mastermind that has been chased for 6 seasons.
Also there are a few questions open like:
In one episode Jane recognizes a psychopath by his cold reaction to seeing blood.
Also he's seen meeting with Bertram and other high ranking characters; they wouldn't waste their time doing that unless he did have stature.
game is game
Lot of people forgetting or not knowing when this episode was released, he wasn't RJ. The writers had no idea who RJ was actually going to be for years. They didn't decide until end of s5/while writing out s6.
There's many of characters it could just as easily been, there's multiple limited roles that drop hints at them being RJ. His creepy "foreshadowing" is actually just coincidence. But knowing the end helps add a new layer to the whole thing.
This clip is taken from season 6 episode 3. At that moment in time Heller had chosen McAllister as his Red john.

Which I like because red John is not some over the top villain, he was meant to be just a normal human being that can make mistakes and can be outsmarted.
@@KatzYRD Proves how people believe superstitions and conspiracy theories. Bruno Heller didn't decide on the identity of RJ until after s5.
