They were both idealists about what America could be, yet not naive enough to believe America to be beyond criticism, or incapable/unneeding of improvement. The only thing that has changed is the framing and not even really that. The brothers criticized Vietnam because it was blatantly wrong and very American to speak up and do so. The 1960's were great times for many reasons, including The Smothers Brothers Hour, and because of the Women's Movement which for the most part, got rid of the "objectification of women," because of successful social movements that attempted to eliminate racial prejudice (unfortunately, racial prejudice continues today), because of the rise and maturation of a new musical medium called rock'n'roll (including The Fab Four, Crosby Still & Nash, The Byrds, Lovin' Spoonful, The Impressions, The Temptations, Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead). Supremely talented, absolutely hilarious. The tragedy is that in a half century nothing at all has changed. Except the deficit is one hundred times as great.
In one show, Dick said, "We've come a long way since that first Thanksgiving in Plymouth, when the Pilgrims sat down at the table with the Indians to eat turkey." Tom replied, "Boy, I'll say we've come a long way. Now we're in Paris, sitting down at a table with the Viet Cong, eating crow."
Live well and good by laughing innocently, and often. Add "love others much" to the mix and you'll at least be heading in the proper direction, and won't be tripping over your own dark emotions simply because 'hurt' popped right into your 'victim' head, and you felt a strong need to respond to it. Hello from Maine, USA...May 24 2023. I hope that someday we can all sit back and happily laugh together as brothers and sisters, all modern society united as if family or friends even, friends happily laughing together about how foolish humans used to be, but aren't anymore since we all found a source of tranquility, while yet still experiencing many, many adventures together, too. I hope that. An old, tired man can get to have little sweet dreams if he's a silly little dreamer, right?

Their show got them into trouble a few times. It was a fabulous show. They were funny and clever guys as well as being musically very talented. They always had the best guests.
"Michael Row The Boat Ashore" is a great gospel song. I remember singing that song around the campfire at camp in the late 1960's, around the time that "The Smothers Brothers" show was on the air. That program should be never had been cancelled by CBS. That will always be remembered as a great tragedy in television story.
I will never forget a neighbor home from Viet Nam. He was trying to visit. At the end he said , imitating an announcer, "during the taping of this show, over 3000 boys died in Viet Nam." My folks were stunned but kind to him as he went home. It changed them

Great singers and musicians. It is easy to miss that when they are being so funny. I sure miss them now.
Killer harmonies.
Cant help but smiling 😝
Miss you Tommy.
THEY TAUGHT US TO WHAT'S RIGHT AND WRONG WITH COMEDY
That piano behind John Henry was superb.
Piano was normally Mike Preddy who I took piano lessons from in college!
Not certain he was on that track!
Starts at 33:00.
@@mikeatkinson2836 Internet search results affirm it most likely was him. Thanks!
Pat Paulson for President! Tommy and Dickie were instrumental in my social activism, using music and satire to great effect. Bless them, and RIP Tommy. ❤
Isn't it a shame people age and retire...wish they could entertain forever...clean..funny..talented
So sorry we lost tommy..
Love all the classic musical skits
Boy, we really need good, honest, clean and silly humor right about now while we watch the parade of clowns lie to our faces…regardless of party.
The show was funny and their skits were timely for us!
Dickie Smother’s voice is so good
When I watch these 2 lovely men I cry hard because of the simpler time.
Truly missed! I was a teenager
Tender and they could say whatever they wanted
♥️🌹🙏
Was very young when the show 1st aired . Watching this now , very smart material. A little risky for the time . Thanks for sharing .
Their show got them into trouble a few times. It was a fabulous show. They were funny and clever guys as well as being musically very talented. They always had the best guests.
That's part of the reason why there were only three seasons. They pushed the boundaries a bit too much for the times.
It’s fun watching Dick’s face when he’s trying not to laugh.
These guys were so great together. I'm very sad over the passing of Tommy.
Mom always liked you best.
I'll Always Love you Hayden Panettiere
They were liberal back when it was cool, wonder what their views would be today 🧐
Liberal , but not progressive .
So clever…from Australia.
they didn't put out enough records...I would have bought them all.
Check out the film "The Ciderhouse Rules".
If they quit singing, haul ass.
They actually took it when he said "Take it."! 🤣
To be honest though that sounded like a chorus to me and not a studio audience. They probably had planted singers.
Yes we do miss them
Love the Smuthers brothers!!!!
greatest ever
I will never forget a neighbor home from Viet Nam. He was trying to visit.
At the end he said , imitating an announcer, "during the taping of this show, over 3000 boys died in Viet Nam."
My folks were stunned but kind to him as he went home.
It changed them
Loved these guys
Thank y’all very much, send me your money😅😅😅😅😅❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Pat Paulson for,,Presinedit
I remember my hope my parents would go upstairs early so i could turn Bonanza off to watch these guys. I didnt hate Sunday night and more school the next day when i saw their act
