      Try to get these somewhere else online or local. I understand they get money for posting links to Amazon, but let's not give Amazon any mo money.

      Matt Baumgart I agree that these are brilliant to get kids into scale model building! Kind of a bridge between LEGOs and full-on model building.

  • @notatallheng
    @notatallheng 4 года назад +4

    These are pretty nice. What I'd like to see, though, is for them to release an adapter that lets you plug 3mm pegs into those custom sockets. A couple of the big model manufacturers in Japan have been releasing mecha models and aftermarket bits that use 3mm pegs for hardpoints, so having that kind of adapter would really go a long way to making these even more kitbashable.

    I picked up a few sets at Target last week and they are fantastic. The 80’s space ship vibe is really fun and they strike a perfect balance of limitations and freedom that puts them in a totally different category from LEGO. These allow you to build really complex builds, but you can also make something neat while fiddling around while watching a movie or stuck on a conference call. The passion I have developed for these things is almost worrying.

    I've been loving these since I spotted them in the toy aisle of my local Target. The low price point made them an impulse buy and now I've been showing them to friends who might be interested.
    I hope it continues to future waves and they fix a lot of the QA problems I ran into with my sets like easily broken pilot figures or inconsistent connection tolerances causing drooping or easily disconnected builds. Also I'd love to see more ground vehicles as well

    What is the mysterious UJU tech that is included?

    • @dontfeedthelunatic
      @dontfeedthelunatic 4 года назад +1

      In a lore sense, they are just powerful weapons. In a physical sense they are special, larger optional pieces that for the most part include trans-orange missiles that are spring loaded and launch farther that the other launch-able missiles they include with each set. The tank comes with a "shield" tech and one of the "bad guy" ships has mines that it can drop.

    What would be really cool is if each piece had some stats. These would always include MASS and COST (in some hypothetical fictional currency). But some pieces might have stats like THRUST (for thrusters), DAMAGE (for weapons), SCAN POWER (for sensors), and so on. Then you could add it all up to get the total abilities for your spaceship, and these stats would be used in a dice game you could do battles with. Taking turns, moving x number of inches (total thrust / total mass = speed in inches). And some way to determine that you remove a certain number of pieces when hit. In a match, both sides would get a budget to 'buy' their pieces with. It would just be one more way you could play with it if you wanted.

    Those look cool, and are way cheaper than I assumed looking at them. What I don't see is the API, as it were. Does SnapShips publish a 3D model of their connector so you can design and print your own parts to truly customize the ships? That would properly take it to the next level, especially if they also provided tested gcode and recommended settings for several of the more popular printers.

    • @fireinacan
      @fireinacan 4 года назад +2

      They are very modular and a joy to mess around with and reconfigure. However, if you're trying to make a specific ship from a fandom, you will probably be a bit limited by the parts. That being said, if you're not going for exact, you can easily make a creation inspired by a specific ship, and do it in less than the time it takes to watch an episode of your favorite show!

    Thanks Norm! Any recommendations for industrial looking mech model kits? I built a Gunpla recently but would like something a bit more mechanical looking to double as a Scifi /Post Apoc wargaming mkniature.

    • @notatallheng
      @notatallheng 4 года назад +1

      Bandai also makes this line of relatively inexpensive mech models called 30 Minute Missions. They're very modular, a bit simpler than Gunpla, and they do have a slightly more mechanical vibe. Most of them come with this little mini-mech that you can use as a very simple head replacement if the original head looks too fancy for your tastes. Apart from the size (about the same as a small Gunpla, so maybe a bit big for wargaming), they're pretty good as wargaming pieces - very customizable and kitbashable, you can swap out parts and assemble custom cannon-arms and suchlike, there are sets that let you replace the mech legs with tank treads or flight boosters, etc.
      Apart from that, you could also look at Kotobukiya's old Armored Core kits; some are very blocky and mechanical looking. Problem is that those tend to be larger and a lot more expensive than 30MM/Gunpla, so even less well-suited to a wargaming table.
