- What is black glass, also called "Pirate Glass" and where do you find it? I have traveled all over the world looking for sea glass and have found the most pirate glass in Spain and England. In this video, I'll show you what it looks like under normal light, and what to expect when you hold it over a flashlight. There are many different colors of black glass...olive green, amber, red and blue. The olive/amber colors are the oldest (some as old as 600 years) and came from old glass bottles made from the 1500s to the 1880s.
That sheds a new light on sea glass hunting. Way cool.
Always love collecting sea glass , rock stone etc .
Thank you for sharing your expertise. I'm in my 3rd year hunting and am beginning to find more of the black glass. One of my locations has been in use since the 1600's so I suspect it will provide more black glass. Happy hunting.
Love this!! Thank you for sharing 🕉♥️
Glad you enjoyed it!
I think ima look for them couse it's so cool
Did you ever try searching for the black ones during the night 🤔 with a flashlight ??
Just noticed that I never replied to this. No, we don't go at night, just during the day. I bet it would be interesting to go with a black light though, to see what glows at night.
What causes the blue and red glass to become black
Lovely collection! I have read a lot about #seahambeach - would love to go one day 🥰
Thank you! It's such fun to go there.
I also found black sea glass but it is not green when you shine a light into it it is more blue wat dus dat mean what kind of sea glass is it then
What does the blue and the pinkish colors mean? Is it just what the glass was originally?
Yes, the colors are just whatever the item was when it was made. Traditional "black glass" came from items that were generally olive green, however, I have found glass in a variety of colors that is so dark it looks black. Some people call that "secret glass" so that it's not represented as the old olive green glass.
Where can these stone, pebbles, be found...
Please reply with the info...
Sincerely, LizBeth
They can be found on most beaches that have sea glass. Most of the colorful black glass pieces I found on Seaham Beach. Then I found most of the old "pirate" green glass in Mallorca in the water of the Mediterranean.
Is there a way to get the color out again of those? So they wont be black but have the vibrant color they show under the light?
No, unfortunately that is how this glass was made. It contains elements which make it dark, so that they could be used to contain light-sensitive liquids.
Those green glass pieces are pirate glass. Quite prized! Here is a link to video from Craig and Nicole of Scottish Mudlarks talking about pirate glass. ruclips.net/video/XX52hw8Hav0/видео.html
What if you found black glass but its nog green but bleu
Anything that looks black without shining a light through it, is considered "black glass." It was just traditionally made with very dark olive/amber colors. But later they made dark glass using all different colors. In the sea glass world, it's all considered black glass of you can't tell the color just by looking at it. The romantic term 'Pirate Glass' has recently started circulating when referring to black glass. Even though it has nothing to do with pirates.
I have lot of sea glasess but no one interested to these stone sea glasess

If it looks black unless you hold it up against a bright light like a cell phone, then it's considered "Black Glass" or what they're now calling "Pirate Glass." It's just not as old as the amber or olive green colors.
