Thank you for the information on drilling the shells and sea glass, etc. I think the water helps the drill bit stay cool while drilling and it helps to keep the dust from being air- born . And, that keeps us from breathing it into our lungs. ✨👍👍✨

@@scottishmudlarking I’ve always been interested In Scotland because both of my grandfathers immigrated to the USA a long time ago.😊. No doubt it’s an interesting place with lots of amazing history😊
Thanks so much Mel! Glad you found the video useful - I typically use a 1.4mm diamond tip drill bit with the shape as pictured in the video. Of course this will depend upon the project you have in mind :)
Hi there, I just found your channel. Ive been trying to watch a ton of videos about drilling small stones and this is by far the most helpful thank you so much! Could you please advice me on what rotary tool you're using? I want to drill tiny semi precious stones, tumbled ones. Please do reply if it's possible. Thank you so much for this video, I learned a lot 🥰
Hi, glad you found us! Lovely to hear the video was helpful! Thank you! :D I use a rotary drill - a dremel or equivalent works fine - I use both a dremel and an unbranded drill, both do a good job. If it is battery powered, it must be at least a 7volt power supply. I prefer battery power for safety with water involved. I use a 1.4 mm diamond tipped drill bit and a special chuck (a multi chuck) to hold that bit. So, I do not drill semi-precious stones - I have tried with agates and they tend to shatter. It may be that, after tumbling, they are better prepared for drilling, I can't say for sure. I wish you lots of luck, do let us know if it goes well! Thank you so much!
Hello! Good question... We should have said! The bits we use have two vertical flutes - we used to use bits with three flutes, but the dual flutes work just as well and are more cost effective. We have not used the bits that are just coated, so cannot advise on those. Thank you so much, best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo
God Bless your heart! -- I always do the same thing when I'm stringing and pre-cut the cord! 😂 But it all worked out in the end and your hanger is lovely! I'm curious as to whether you sell any of your creations on Etsy? That seems quite the popular thing to do nowadays. 😊
Thanks so much ! We do have an Etsy shop for the jewellery we make from our beach finds and also Bottledump finds 😊 here is the link Scottishmudlarking.Etsy.com 😃 We ship tracked worldwide.
How lovely ,I feel as if I've just had a walk along the beach..gentle video.... I went to Elie and collected 'rubies' pity you can't drill them. ~I am going to buy drill, what kind is it that you use.?..
Thank you so much, that's really lovely - if we can take you along to the beach with us, we're happy! :D You had better luck than we did with Elie, but we'll try again - always nice to have an excuse to pop over. I use two drills, both do the same job well, though one is far cheaper - I use a rechargeable battery powered Dremel and a non-name brand from Lidl. The main thing is that the drill has at least 7volts and that it can accept a "multi-chuck" - always drill at the highest speed (25000 rpm + ). If in doubt, a dremel is a safe bet, but make sure it has the correct voltage, they have lower voltage drills that aren't as good for glass drilling. Good luck! :D
@@scottishmudlarking Thank you so much. I bought a Dremel and have already got 3 pendants with glass I found on Seaham beach...after your video I took myself down there....happy daze !!
Hi Nicole & Craig, I've just started experimenting with drilling some of the sea glass i have collected. Is there a particular brand or type of drill bit you would suggest I try and what size? I wait eagerly for your Friday videos every week. Thank you for putting them together ❤ Julie B
Hi Julie, great to hear you are giving drilling a try 😃 I don’t use a branded drill - my main focus is that it is battery powered as I prefer not to be connected to the mains . Try to get a drill with at least 25.000rpm and around 7V or 12V if opting for a battery powered one. I typically use 1.4mm diamond tip drill bits, but I have smaller and larger ones. The size of the drill is dependent on your project I would say. Best of luck and remember to start with your least liked sea glass when starting out to drill 😊 see you Friday!!!
Thanks so much David! Here are a couple of links to drill bits - I use these and similar ones from sellers on ebay. They don't all work but they are cheaper than the ones I used to get from the US , so the better option if you are drilling a lot! We are going to have an updated drilling video out on Christmas Eve ;) 1.2mm Diamond Tip Drill bits amzn.to/3l23XVq 1mm Diamond Tip Drill Bits amzn.to/32wlX3N
@@scottishmudlarking we’ve collected glass and shells for over 20 years so only now just started crafting struggling with drilling but will keep practicing.
All hand held, they can be tricky though... we have a few tips on how to successflly get through a marble in a forthcoming video! That should be out in a few weeks. :D Thank you so much, Nicole & Craig xo
Thank you so much! :D Yes, I use a cordless dremel some of the time. I have also found non-named brands to work just as well, so long as it goes up to 25,000rpm, it should work for drilling glass.
Hi! We cover drill spec, drill bits and much more in this video - and we take drilling to a more advanced level with lots of tips along the way. Bottom line is, you can't go wrong with Dremel, but, there are more affordable drills that do the job just as well - the video explains the details. Thank you so much, best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo ruclips.net/video/dGe6AvJELsQ/видео.html
Thanks so much for asking Brian! You can get the drill bits from amazon and ebay - I just like the shape shown in the video. The cheaper ones are a bit hit and miss but they are a fifth of expensive ones you can get from the US!
Hi there, I am finding it really difficult drilling my sea glass, I even resorted to my son's power drill, I think the problem is the quality of the diamond drill bits which I got from China, please can you tell me where you buy the bits, in the UK further up the road from Dundee. Thank you!
Hi ! I tend to buy my drill bits from eBay - make sure they are the straight looking ones like in the video ! There are costly ones from the US you can get, but they are very pricey! We will have a beginner to advanced new drilling tutorial out on Christmas Eve 😃 ! PS you need 12v on a battery powered drill and drill at 25.000 rpm under water
Hi there, where did you get your diamond drill bits from? I have a dremel and can't find any from that brand, struggling to find any generally in the UK. Would love to know where you got yours from, Thanks!
Hi! You need a multi Chuck so you can fit the small drill bits … we get ours from eBay , no particular seller . Typically we use 1.4mm in the shape you see in our how to drill video. I have tried the dremel ones - very expensive but didn’t work for me at all. Good luck drilling and don’t start with your best bits!!!
Just a suggestion: use a hot-glue gun to attach a piece of pressure treated wood to the bottom of the water tray - giving a solid base for drilling. Before filling with water, some pieces for drilling can be hot-glued to the wood, making drilling easier.
Yes you could attach a piece of wood to a dish - I would not recommend glueing the sea glass to anything if you are looking to use it afterwards. We share the way we find it easy to drill, there are of course other options. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much... and sincerest apologies for that... You are absolutely right about the music. We plan to do another drilling video soon and will address the audio issue - I may, if time allows, sub that video myself. Very many thanks for your comment - its really important for us to get this kind of feedback. :D

Could you be so kind as to recommend a specific Dremel tool for drilling? Maybe even a link for the chuck & appropriately sized drill tip? I’m not asking out of laziness, I went to a shop & looked at the Dremel type tools they had available & couldn’t make heads or tails of them
Hi Janine - it’s likely to be the drill bits that are the issue here. Drill at highest speed around 25.000 rpm and have a look at the shape of the diamond tip drill bits I use in the video. You can cheap ones on eBay (don’t opt for the box of mixed drill bits with round heads etc!) or splurge out and get the Triple ripple ones from Kingsley ( that’s in the US!) ... try swapping the drill bits and make sure they are straight inside the multi Chuck. Best of luck, Nicole
What brand/type of diamond drill bits do you use and where do you get them? I can’t find tiny ones in the brick and mortar stores and don’t trust the ones on Amazon
Thank you, very kind! We plan to make things like the windchimes available on Ko-Fi, soon, a link is in the description. Nicole's jewellery is hosted in her shop, the link for that is in the description, www.Tiliabythesea.com

Hello from Scotland! Thank you! Really glad the video was helpful, and, its great to have you along.
Oh my that first shell is great
Its hard to beat natures wonder! :D
@@scottishmudlarking I agree, our area has a lot of farm land that fill up with geese, swans and all sorts of duck, just love it
Awesome idea! You could also find metal bits and tye them on in the middle so they clank around and make chime sounds. Love all the crafty videos ♡
Thanks so much Tracy! We have the wind chime in the living room now - it doesn't get much wind but looks amazing with the pieces nearly floating in the air :) Glad you are enjoying our craft videos, we have lots coming up on Sunday's 7pm with our new format of Friday beach and Sunday craft! xo
I have tons and tons of sea glass collected so I can hopefully one day leave my awful office job and make treasures. Your video has helped me get the confidence to order a drill and start working on it, thank you! 🌊❤️
That's really lovely! Thank you so much! We wish you the very best of luck - making jewellery is a wee bit addictive... though maybe not as much as spending time at the shore! :D Thank you, best wishes, xo
Great video, I love seeing where you go and thanks for showing how to drill your pieces, lovely end result ❤️🇦🇺 xxx
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed it! :D
Thank you for the information on drilling the shells and sea glass, etc. I think the water helps the drill bit stay cool while drilling and it helps to keep the dust from being air- born . And, that keeps us from breathing it into our lungs. ✨👍👍✨
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, it is so important too avoid inhaling any glass, shells etc particles! Best wishes, :D xo
Very pretty!
Thanks so much Chris! The suncatcher is in our living room now - it looks lovely with the sea glass and shells almost floating in the air :)
Thank you so much! That 'suncatcher' has never seen the sun... it hangs from our living room light! Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo
Thank you I really found this so helpful and inspiring. I now know what will be top of my birthday pressie wish list. I loved the swans one of my favorite birds. Yes please to more crafting videos in the future.
🦢🦢🦢major BEAUTIFUL 😍!!!
Thanks so much! Really nice to hear you're inspired to get drilling! Very best of luck and have lots of fun with it! We'll keep craft ideas coming and hopefully a few, at least, will keep your drill busy! :D
So lovely to see so many swans on the Tay, its quite an unusual sight! We're really lucky to have so many nice things around us to share with you!

Thanks for a lovely video, the wind chime looks really pretty, we went out gathering some sea glass today and found our first piece of feather edge pottery , thanks again looking forward to your next outing xx
Thanks so much ! We are very happy with the sun catcher too 😃 ! Oh feather edge pottery - I have a couple of pieces, not too many it’s quite rare 😊

Thank you for the interesting craft lesson. You make it look so easy.
Many thanks! Great to know you enjoyed it! We took our time... but the way I drill now hides years of practice! :)
All the pottery, seaglass you found are looking amazing. I dont see this kind of things in our country. Every day I want to go somewhere to look for, its impossible, becouse I am to tired, or donnt have time
In my mind I am withyou on the way for looking...have fun...for me too...😆🖐

So beautiful! Love the crafting with your little treasures!
Thanks so much Misty! We should really make another sun catcher soon 😊
Brilliant, drilling onto plasticine is such a great idea, I've destroyed more than I've drilled through to date but my luck might change now !
Thank you so much! :D We'll cross our fingers for you - hopefully there will be no more broken pieces! :D
Love it fab tutorial can’t wait fi make one!!

I just love your videos! From Tennessee, USA
Hello from Scotland! Thanks so much for your comments!
I'm definitely making one of these, thanks for the inspiration.
Awesome! Lets us know how it goes... we had good fun doing that! :D
Thank you! :D
great video I have a dremel but its plugged luckily I have a batter charged drill too now might need the chuck looking forward to trying this :) so far ive just used bails on pendant type seaglass I have quite a collection not as much as yourself but similar tubs lol
Oh! Very cool! Have fun - there is no stopping when you get going! :D Thank you so much! xo
I'd love to see more crafting videos from you! I love beachcombing whenever we're abroad (Switzerland has many beautiful nature types, but sandy ocean beaches is not one of them!), and I always pick up seashells and stones and seaglass, but have never really known what to do with them - your ideas are inspiring!
Thank you so much, That's great! We have lots planned and a few lined up for over the next few weeks! :D We have a sea shell special coming up on Friday and a shell craft for Sunday! :D Hope you enjoy them! :D Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo
Good job
Thanks so much Pati :) The mobile is in our living room now... a reminder of that day out! x
Lovely sun-catcher! I never knew how one drills through shells, now I do 😊. Nicole, when you showed the two drift wood pieces and said they need to be tied together, than 2 hands started doing it; it took me a moment to realise that it's your husband. For a second or two was thinking what happened to your delicate hands? 🤣 Maybe, it's just me, but had a right giggle about it all. Keep your videos coming. And congratulations on passing the 1000 subscribers milestone!
Thanks so much! We're over the moon with hitting 1000 plus - keep an eye out for the giveaway video - we though we had more time to get onto that, then, boom! 1000! Took us a little by surprise!
Hahaha!! Yes... after trying and getting my fingers all tied up, I handed it over to Craig, I'll drill, he can tie! Haha! Glad that gave you a giggle! :D

@@scottishmudlarking I’ve always been interested In Scotland because both of my grandfathers immigrated to the USA a long time ago.😊. No doubt it’s an interesting place with lots of amazing history😊
This was so useful, thank you. Can I ask which drill/drill bits you're using?
Thanks so much Mel! Glad you found the video useful - I typically use a 1.4mm diamond tip drill bit with the shape as pictured in the video. Of course this will depend upon the project you have in mind :)
Awesome ty
Very kind! Thank you so much! :D xo
Thank you! :D
I use a rotary drill - a dremel or equivalent works fine - I use both a dremel and an unbranded drill, both do a good job.
Hello! Is the drill bit a twist bit or just diamond coated without the twist? Thanks so much!
Hello! Good question... We should have said! The bits we use have two vertical flutes - we used to use bits with three flutes, but the dual flutes work just as well and are more cost effective. We have not used the bits that are just coated, so cannot advise on those.
Thank you so much, best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo
I like that stuff I wanna make some myself show me how thank you have a good day
Thank you so much! I hope the video helped to get you started! :D xo
Thank you☮️🇨🇦
Many thanks! :)
You had better luck than we did with Elie, but we'll try again - always nice to have an excuse to pop over.
Thank you for putting them together ❤
Julie B
Hi Julie, great to hear you are giving drilling a try 😃 I don’t use a branded drill - my main focus is that it is battery powered as I prefer not to be connected to the mains . Try to get a drill with at least 25.000rpm and around 7V or 12V if opting for a battery powered one. I typically use 1.4mm diamond tip drill bits, but I have smaller and larger ones. The size of the drill is dependent on your project I would say. Best of luck and remember to start with your least liked sea glass when starting out to drill 😊 see you Friday!!!
good itam
Thanks so much
Hi what drills bits do you use please could share a link lovely video thanks 😊
Thanks so much David! Here are a couple of links to drill bits - I use these and similar ones from sellers on ebay. They don't all work but they are cheaper than the ones I used to get from the US , so the better option if you are drilling a lot! We are going to have an updated drilling video out on Christmas Eve ;)

@@scottishmudlarking we’ve collected glass and shells for over 20 years so only now just started crafting struggling with drilling but will keep practicing.
How do you drill the marbles? What holds it in place while drilling? Thank you
All hand held, they can be tricky though... we have a few tips on how to successflly get through a marble in a forthcoming video! That should be out in a few weeks. :D Thank you so much, Nicole & Craig xo
Lovely tutorial. Are you using a cordless dremel?
Thank you so much! :D
Yes, I use a cordless dremel some of the time. I have also found non-named brands to work just as well, so long as it goes up to 25,000rpm, it should work for drilling glass.
@@scottishmudlarking thank you for your help.
Where can I find a drill and what type of drill is a good one to purchase?
Hi! We cover drill spec, drill bits and much more in this video - and we take drilling to a more advanced level with lots of tips along the way. Bottom line is, you can't go wrong with Dremel, but, there are more affordable drills that do the job just as well - the video explains the details.
Thank you so much, best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

Where can i get the 1.4mm drills that you use as i have lots of seaglass and would like to give this a try.
Would love to know where you got yours from,
Thanks!
@@scottishmudlarking Hi thank you for your reply, I have a deemed style so I can fit smaller pieces :) do you get the actual drill bits from eBay?
Great video can I ask where you get your drill bits from thanks
Hi Bruce, I buy mine from eBay now - just search for diamond tip drill bits and you get lots of choice 😃
Great thank you can you please check out my wife's Facebook page it's sam's larking
Lovely! What brand cordless drill do you use?
There are links in the video description :)
Do you use the diamond bit for the pottery as well?
Yes, I use the same size diamond bit for drilling and, occasionally, for widening too! :D Thank you, glad you enjoyed this video! xo
@@scottishmudlarking That is good to know I do have some pottery pieces we've found over the years. I love how you have organized your work space

Could you be so kind as to recommend a specific Dremel tool for drilling? Maybe even a link for the chuck & appropriately sized drill tip? I’m not asking out of laziness, I went to a shop & looked at the Dremel type tools they had available & couldn’t make heads or tails of them
Thanks so much for asking. All the links to each item is in the description 🥰
We’re do you get you diamond bits at your drill for drilling holes in glass
I've found you can pay as much or as little as you want for these... The bits you will find on the auction sites work just fine. Thanks so much!
I tried to drill seaglass tonight but it took forever about an hour and not even halfway through the glass gave up for the night.
Try getting the shape of the drill bits we show in the video :) or if you are in the US you can buy triple ripple , they are pricey but good!
Do you sell the windchimes u make n I'd love a necklace made out of a cod marble
