Slight correction: He's not forced to roll the boulder up and down the mountain for all of eternity. He's willingly doing it. Basically the gods said to Sisyphus "if you can roll this boulder up the mountain we will give you another life" and he's so deadset on deceiving the gods that he's willing to roll a boulder up and down the hill for eternity no matter what just so that he can have the last laugh. It's a lesson about the indomitable human spirit and how we can do anything for any amount of time as long as we have enough motivation.

I think Sisyphus prime from ultrakill really brought this meme to my attention when that came out. His whole level in ultrakill is the single hardest gaming experience of my life and Sisyphus prime’s entire character is so cool in that game.
Bro’s got some of the hardest lines in gaming, “this prison, to hold, me?” Being one of my favorites. Check out ultrakill, that game plays with different mythologies and regligions in such an interesting way while also being the most mechanically fun shooter I’ve ever played.

Sisyphus in Ultrakill ironically has nothing to do with the boulder, he just wants to kill you for no reason before he wages war against heaven. The funny thing is, in the SAME update where he was added, they added a stone cannonball variant for the rocket launcher. A, ahem, Boulder cannon if you will

I find Sisyphus' portrayal in Ultrakill especially niuanced. In the original myth, his struggle is portrayed as useless in the face of impossible task. In Ultrakill, his enemies are the helpless ones in the face of an unstoppable force rolling up from hell to lay waste to the cities and armies of Heaven.
