Dolly’s mom actually made her a coat of many colors. She has a replica in her museum at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. So this is a true story about Dolly. My mother went to school with Dolly and had a class with her.

This song is an actual true story... All factual. Her mom tried to make her proud of the coat by telling about Joseph from the Bible. So, sweet the lesson. I'm so glad y'all can appreciate Dolly. She's a great artist and a sweet person, too.

It was dolly’s song from the beginning, she performed and recorded it in the 70s. Whitney Houston only covered it on the film body “bodyguard” but she did make it more famous. Also Elvis Presley wanted to cover it in 70s but for him to do that dolly had to sign the rights aways or something so Dolly refused. I love both versions of the song

  • @oougahersharr
    @oougahersharr 4 года назад +337

When I was ten and my little sister eight, Mom managed to scrape enough money together for two coats that were made of fake fur. We were so proud of those coats. They cost forty dollars each, which in the early 1980's was a fortune to two little kids. One day we had a fire at the school and I was pulled out of line from my class to go to my sister's class line. She was crying hysterically because we weren't allowed to stop and get our coats when evacuating, and she was horrified that her coat would burn since Mom worked so hard (three jobs) to get it. I told her Mom would buy us two of everything we lost as long as we came home unhurt. Later on, when told about the fire and such, Mom reiterated that she would buy us two of everything if we were safe. By the way, the fire was put out before it left the boiler room, so none of our stuff was damaged. It's not the same as Dolly's story, but I always remember that when I hear this song - - and how I always knew, and helped my sister see, that we were worth more than a hundred fur coats, real or otherwise.

Dolly gives every student in 3 high schools a $500 scholarship for graduating, (I graduated in 91, so that has been a lot of money since!), and then every child in Sevier County from birth to 5 recieves a hard back book with Imagination Express. She started with nothing...except the MOST important things - family, love, and faith. She has given back amazingly to her community. Dolly is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. She has written over 3 thousand songs. She wrote 2 of her biggest songs Jolene and I will always love you on the same day!! She's great people too. When the guy who hired her to be the girl singer on his TV show when she was just starting out fell on hard financial times years later. He was forced to sell his song book to pay debts, Dolly bought it and then gave it back to him as a gift. And when Tennessee got all torn up by floods a few years back she gave away hundreds of thousands of dollars to people to help them rebuild and get back on their feet. She's 74 now and still performing. Keep those open minds fellas. Lots of great music in the world. Peace.

I forget who the interview was with but if I find it I'll post a link, but in the interview she stated that she wrote Jolene that same day.
Another fun fact is that Dolly had suggested to Patti Labelle several times that she record it because she thought Patti would have been able to sing it wonderfully. (I agree with Dolly on that.) After Patti heard Whitney Houston's rendition she deeply regretted putting it off.

Here's the thing about Dolly Parton - she is the richest country singer by a large margin with a net worth of over $500 million dollars, but she has NEVER forgotten where she came from. She has never been ashamed of it. One of the many reasons I love her so much is her self-deprecating humor One of my all-time favorite quotes from her is "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap." Dolly's catalog of music is absolutely huge (over 3,000 songs), but this is my favorite song by far. It's so genuine and heartfelt. If it doesn't hit you in the feels it's quite possible you are simply devoid of a soul.

Yes, I love this song too. So many people wanted to see the original coat Dolly's mother made that she asked her mom if she still had it. She did not; it was probably worn out and thrown away at some point. But Dolly's mom found a photograph of the original coat, got a bunch of rags together, and sewed another one, just like the first. It is now in the Dolly Parton museum.
Oh, and as for Dolly's guitar playing: Look close, and you will see that she does not play with a pick. She does not play with her fingertips. She plays with her FINGERNAILS. That takes an amazing level of skill.

Dolly was born and raised in the mountains of Tennessee. When we had the horrible fires several years ago she gave so much of herself. Her money her time everything. She has a heart of gold. Her biggest joy is helping others. She has done so much for so many I couldn't begin to tell everything she's done. Please look up her biography. You'll be amazed at all she's done and continues to do. This is a great lady.💖💖💖

I remember when the world outside of Nashville discovered Dolly Parton. I was blown away the first time I saw her on Johnny Carson. I bought her first "cross-over" album, "Here You Come Again," then bought approximately 25 additional albums. At the time, growing up in a blue collar town, divided along ethnic lines (Polish vs. Italian), the musical genres my peers were into spanned from disco's dying days, to acid rock, to the beginnings of the punk movement. But, for me, the one thing that I loved, that the other kids made fun of was Dolly Parton.
If you want a megadose of Dolly's "country goes to church" style, check out The Seeker. My mother listened to country music radio and this came on almost every time we got into the car. I was obsessed, even before I knew who Dolly was, or what the song was about.
Keep up the good work, gentlemen. Your family must be very proud of you.

Please let the Williams' brother know that Joseph's brothers didn't KILL him. They sold him off to slavery, and many years later Joseph became the second most powerful man in Egypt after Pharaoh. Joseph ended up forgiving and saving his brothers and their families from famine and poverty. Joseph told his brothers: "But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive." Still, I love these young men's sincere reaction to Dolly PARTON's beautiful song!

it's all about attitude. I didn't know I was "poor" until my oldest sister told me that we were poor. thank God I did not listen to her. In my mind we had enough to eat, wear and I had parents that loved me and we were clean and neat AND we went camping at a state park for 2 weeks every summer. we swam in a cold river, hiked, danced every night except Sunday in an open pavilion. we met so many great people and new friends from across the state of Texas. how could she say we were poor? my dad always told me I can do whatever I put my mind to and to ignore the haters. when I came home from school upset by what classmates said, he'd say, did you do your best? I said yes, then he'd smile and say then you can live in peace and hold your head up high. great job you guys! I love your channel.

My mom was an only child, her mom, my Nana, taught me how to crochet & embroider from a very young age because my mom had been uninterested in all that. My family also made sure I learned to sew through 4-H starting at 8 years old. I taught myself to knit when I was 30. I love to make things for others. I still have many things Nana made, and I made things for the family from supplies she left me. It used to hurt when my family didn't treasure the things I make, because I can tell you that makers honestly do put love into every stitch. We think about the loved ones we're making for the entire time we're working, and hope they'll enjoy what we've made as much as we enjoyed creating something for them. My younger sister often put things I made for her children away for safekeeping, which drove me nuts, because I wanted my niece & nephew to use the things I made them. I had to learn to really let go when I made things, and stop having expectations of how they'd be used or appreciated. But I'm sure you've honored your grandmother well by cherishing what she made for you, and as long as you hold onto those items she made with her own 2 hands, you still touch her spirit and keep her love alive.

@@historianKelly Your life story is beautiful, too😊. I DO feel sorry that your loved ones don't appreciate your efforts. My grandma made some complicated crocheting patterns which I do appreciate and think of her when I put it on😄. I don't wear them too often so they don't wear out too quickly since they are irreplaceable. Even as a child, grandma sometimes made me clothes from patterns and I loved them. When they were too small, we sent them to our family and friends in Poland and they appreciated them. Even my crocheted dresses were appreciated there, too😃.
KER, I would appreciate your work if I ever came across it. Homemade clothing and accessories are worth more to me than store bought items👍.

I love your reaction to Dolly’s songs. I am not a big country fan, but I have always loved Dolly. She is a special artist, because she is so honest and good hearted. There are only a few artists that transcend genres successfully and Dolly is one of those people. Plus as a business woman, she is a boss! She has written so many songs. She still owns, “And I will always love you,” so when Whitney covered the song, Dolly got paid!!! They are both beautiful renditions, but when you hear Dolly sing it, you get it. Her father was a sharecropper, poor farmer. She play 8 instruments and writes both lyrics and instrumentals. She allows other artists to record her songs but does not sell the rights to them. But, when you're being beat to a pulp by a gang of boys because you can't talk, it's a whole new level of hell. It's why I hate injustice for ANYONE. I paid for injustice every day of my youth.
