Let me clear something up for everyone about her tone in her voice that some of you perceive as bad. Her pitch is actually fine, as well as her runs. This "nasally" tone is meant to sound sexy and distressed and most importantly DISTINGUISHABLE and unique. When a song of hers comes on the radio you know immediately it's her because you can tell by her voice. It's unique and that's why she's famous. Go look up young Britney singing when she was on Star Search. She was a powerhouse, she sings this way now because she was TRAINED that way. Just because it's not a Whitney Houston sound, doesn't mean it isn't good. Her pitch is right and she can do some good runs, and she was well trained to sing in this style.
But when you are young your voice has not completely developed yet .Who knows.I think the baby voice is her real voice.What wikipedia says is that they shaped her voice to less poppy and low.But there is no proof she had a deep voice lower voice at that time, she could also have a low sweet soubrette voice .I will not believe fake theories until i have proof of it
Her producers talked about this in interviews. When spears got signed her voice wasn't commercial pop enough for her to sell like they wanted. She initially wanted to be and was trained to be a broadway singer. She was a powerhouse with that beautiful alto voice(yes she's an alto she just sings in a higher tone for the appeal. JT and Michael Jackson and many in pop music did the same. Tenor and soprano sounds just sell better for some reason). She was joking around with everyone and either sang or spoke (I can't recall which) in a baby voice and when she did that it clicked to them. When training her, nsync, and the Backstreet Boys, they taught them to sing in a more nasally tone and in Britney's case they taught her to push that baby voice along with it. It may be her voice but it's not a natural or healthy way to sing which is why she started leaning more towards playback in live concerts. That and it makes dancing easier. Sensational artist with a career to back it up but she paid the price for it. As much as she loves to sing I bet it tore her up inside (and probably helped lead to the breakdown) to lose what she had.
I'm so tired of people thinking that in order to be a great singer you have to be able to belt, scream, and shout your lungs out. Everybody can't do that. Everybody doesn't need to do that. There's plenty of singers out here with softer voices that make great music and quite frankly, easier to sing along with. Being a great singer doesn't mean you have to have the lungs of a God. Tons of singers have unique tones/textures to their voice & not everybody needs to be holler like they're dying to be a great singer. No matter how much vocal training somebody does, if it's not meant for them to scream, it's not going to happen. Jesus Christ. Just like everybody isn't able to hold a note for 10mins straight. Everybody's singing is different. Damn.

I would like to make a STRONG statement about this series of videos on Britney's voice. I don't work for any of her production companies, or know anyone in her production team. I am a live sound mixing engineer, and am currently working at a local church. I mix live, and capture multi tracks. It is my opinion (20+ years experience) that the pitch problems are a result of poor monitors. It would take 2 pages to explain that. The other issue is that these mixes may have been done live, and are direct out the mixing console. Live mixes direct out the mixing console are a one-shot to get it right.. and you don't get a second pass to correct anything. This being the case, the mix is the issue, and not the voice. Blending vocals with the instruments is an art, and takes hours to do well. Even when you have the multi tracks, you can spend hours on loop playback to get the voice EQ & mix just right. Until you've had some experience mixing & multi track capture, I would refrain from being too judgmental. Much of the music you hear on the radio has been gone over by PRODUCERS who have a keen ear for correcting minute details. Live is hard on anyone when dancing, and multi shows per week. These are real vocal chords, and not some machine. The lovable factor in Britney is WHY the public likes her, and this sensitivity carries over into sensitive vocal chords. To be HATEFUL, or downright brutal about her 'ability' is more meanness on the publics part than some 'sin' of Britney's.
Yes its hard on vocals..maybe if you a death metal/black metal vocalist. Not really much excuse here for her..shes not a Celine Dion or Whitney Houston if you were to expect some vocal strains. Cannibal Corpse doesnt have any excuses.

I've seen what goes on with live sound engineering, because I've been on stage many times before. I'm more in to doing solo stuff at home really though. I totally agree about pitch problems relating to monitoring. (You're probably right about the "2 pages" bit)! LOL! It's especially problematic when a singer has to sing at the bottom end of their vocal range, where they can't get any real power. They can't hear their own voice properly, against the high volume at gigs, even WITH good monitoring. In a studio, they can just have the headphones quiet for the low vocal parts.

I agree with you, she was always known as the performer that had the whole package. I actually saw a clip of her in her early teens she actually does have the voice for a singer but I guess it was swiftly eclipsed by Christina who came out just about the same time. Still she does have the voice for a singer but she'll probably never be a vocal powerhouse but that wasn't what got her the fans so it doesn't really matter i guess.
there are performer singers and then there are singers period....singers are like jennifer hudson, mariah carey, whitney houston, celine dion...and then you have the performer singers/entertainers like beyonce, britney, ariana grande, etc.....then you have singers and performers like the one and only michael jackson who can do it all!
kitty kat thats her real voice i think. Sometimes they using techno in recording, but it was real her voice. She have uniqe voice, and so match with her music tht mix tecno and dance, smart producer find a package of star.
Found a random interview with the great David Foster. He said the one singer he would love to showcase on the stage in a sit down format would be Brittney Spears. He said she was destroyed by the industry and would like her to have her moment to show the world why she ever became famous . I mean look at her vocals as a kid on star search .Wow. I think people make the mistake of holding vocalists up to Whitney, Beyoncé or Mariah . There is more than one way to sing and for it to be beautiful . There are so many different voices that are unique and perfect how they are . I wouldn’t want everyone to sound the same ! Britney has been thru a lot , it shows in her demeanor . She seems fragile , shy and beaten down . I was happy she was honored a couple years ago like she was . That’s why David said what he did .
She used to sing live and I thought it was pretty good, at 1st, then she had her HBO Special and on "I'm not girl" she ran into major trouble, in almost every way... That was the last time I heard her sing live on stage. Pretty sure her management noticed this too (because how could u miss it) and said "ok, you're famous enough to just pretend to sing now so that's what we'll do, here on out"- artistic integrity, out the window

Britney is a recording artist. Her voice is unique. She can't sing live. She is a performer not a singer. I just wish they would give us more of an illusion these days. They should record multiple "live" versions for playback instead of the fucking CD from 20 years ago. C'MON.
I agree totally - it's a telltale sign that she's lip syncing, when the recording is identical to the one on the radio. I think her voice is naturally lower than almost all of her songs, so she's singing in falsetto most of the time. Falsetto doesn't have as much strength, so she always sounds like she's out of breath from holding in while singing . She often sounds nervous and shaky while singing live. I think some of her later songs like Everytime, Perfume, Toxic, Slave, are more suited for her natural voice - she sounds better live singing them (in general).
Love her, she may not have an amazing voice but back in the day she had charisma, amazing looks and star quality. Not to mention she was an amazing dancer. She is truly one of a kind and a living legend

I think I understand why she lipsyncs so much... Her voice sounds so weak on itself and so the whole songs do. If pop songs are weak, then they're not commercial, so people who live on Britney's image would lose money in the way. Such a pity, she could have been a good singer a her voice is really sweet.

Unfortunately, after her first album, she relied heavily on over produced effects and auto tune which made it impossible to sing her songs live. Over the top performances with crazy dancing and gimmicks made it that much harder.
+QueenB Thats just an excuse. Boy bands like NSYNC and Back Street Boys were doing a lot more dancing during their live performances but still managed to sing live. Justin Timberlake, as a solo artist, danced much more than Britney but still nailed his vocals. Usher is in that same boat. Christina Aguilera dances and sings well also.

....i hate to break it to you , but all those big live shows where she is dancing--- she is lip syncing. everyone in the industry does it, but ESPECIALLY pop stars that dance on stage-- they have to or they will sound like a mess. they have a mic so they can appear like they are singing but the mic is turned down, and what is playing is pre-recorded.
Actually there's a lot of people that can sing and dance at the same time. That's the usual thing, I mean, not a lot of people do playback this times... Just Brit. Look at Justin T, Rain, or MJackson, they do playback sometimes, but most of the times they sing live and dance the hell out of them. She has the credit for being a woman and stay in par, even over, male dancers though (I mean in her golden era, because what she does now can hardly be called "dancing").
Oto Kage there's a lot of people that can sing and dance at the same time- we call them stage actors/actresses in musicals. it is completely rare that any pop star can do it day in and day out. when they go on big tours, they are ALL singing along with pre-recorded shit. the recording companies would take no chances that they have a bad show and therefore have poor ticket sales in the future.

Correct technique is relatively easy on the vocal folds. So it's considerably harder for her to sing in the upper 4th octave up to the 5th one.

I agree with you, she was always known as the performer that had the whole package. I actually saw a clip of her in her early teens she actually does have the voice for a singer but I guess it was swiftly eclipsed by Christina who came out just about the same time. Still she does have the voice for a singer but she'll probably never be a vocal powerhouse but that wasn't what got her the fans so it doesn't really matter i guess.

Found a random interview with the great David Foster. He said the one singer he would love to showcase on the stage in a sit down format would be Brittney Spears. He said she was destroyed by the industry and would like her to have her moment to show the world why she ever became famous . I mean look at her vocals as a kid on star search .Wow. I think people make the mistake of holding vocalists up to Whitney, Beyoncé or Mariah . There is more than one way to sing and for it to be beautiful . There are so many different voices that are unique and perfect how they are . I wouldn’t want everyone to sound the same ! Britney has been thru a lot , it shows in her demeanor . She used to sing live and I thought it was pretty good, at 1st, then she had her HBO Special and on "I'm not girl" she ran into major trouble, in almost every way... That was the last time I heard her sing live on stage. Pretty sure her management noticed this too (because how could u miss it) and said "ok, you're famous enough to just pretend to sing now so that's what we'll do, here on out"- artistic integrity, out the window

I agree totally - it's a telltale sign that she's lip syncing, when the recording is identical to the one on the radio. I think her voice is naturally lower than almost all of her songs, so she's singing in falsetto most of the time. Falsetto doesn't have as much strength, so she always sounds like she's out of breath from holding in while singing . She often sounds nervous and shaky while singing live. I think some of her later songs like Everytime, Perfume, Toxic, Slave, are more suited for her natural voice - she sounds better live singing them (in general).

I think I understand why she lipsyncs so much... Her voice sounds so weak on itself and so the whole songs do. If pop songs are weak, then they're not commercial, so people who live on Britney's image would lose money in the way. Such a pity, she could have been a good singer a her voice is really sweet.

Unfortunately, after her first album, she relied heavily on over produced effects and auto tune which made it impossible to sing her songs live. Look at Justin T, Rain, or MJackson, they do playback sometimes, but most of the times they sing live and dance the hell out of them. She has the credit for being a woman and stay in par, even over, male dancers though (I mean in her golden era, because what she does now can hardly be called "dancing").
Oto Kage there's a lot of people that can sing and dance at the same time- we call them stage actors/actresses in musicals. it is completely rare that any pop star can do it day in and day out. when they go on big tours, they are ALL singing along with pre-recorded shit. the recording companies would take no chances that they have a bad show and therefore have poor ticket sales in the future.
