WOW! What's your favorite Bowie song of all time?
Nice story, but I do have to point out David said let me tell you a SECRET!
Moby is trash.
That's not the story he told of Heroes origins on Storytellers.
I'm sure Bowie will never speak to him again after this.
Christopher Ross no he is not, you are!
.....it just makes that song THAT much cooler, since I love The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, and have been a lifelong fan of David Bowie. As for picking a favorite song...wow, that's a tough one....so many great songs.. "Heroes" is definitely among them, but if I had to choose a lesser known favorite, I would have to say his version of "All The Young Dudes" performed/filmed in "The Spiders from Mars". Don't get me wrong, it's great that he gave it to Mott the Hoople who made it into a huge hit, but I tend to like how it sounds from the person who wrote it:-).
If true that would be so Bowie! Hero's is still an original piece because its completely dissimilar and it is not a copy in any definition of the word. Just Bowie's talent at seeing where else a tune can go.
Exactly. The two songs sound nothing alike. Should be a brag not a 'secret'. I don't really believe this guy 100% either.
We can be HEROES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would've asked to do New Career in a New Town with him. 😊
Interesting - I always felt Heroes connected to Waiting for the Man! Both songs share this wonderful soaring rhythm. I thought that this probably was Bowies attempt to gain similar qualities. My fav song? Difficult.... let's say, Sound and Vision
Hugely difficult and changeable decision...BUT...I agree with you...Sound and Vision
Something about this story smells fishy. Bowie would say nothing about this to his band, his producer or anyone else but he'd just keep this great 'secret' inside and tell it to...Moby? Moby? Yeah whatever. What a stupid idea for a 'secret'. Musicians take inspiration from other songs constantly, it's not new thing or a big deal. So Bowie took 'Waiting for the Man' as an inspiration to write 'Heroes' and turned it into a completely different song and Bowie fans want to kill you for it? Whatever Moby.
They were very close friends who lived opposite each other in New York for a pretty long time. I think Moby is using the term ‘secret’ very loosely as you can just listen to the songs and hear that they are rhythmically quite similar - he probably just means Bowie actually pointed it out to him.
didn't need to tell us this to be honest
I hear it too. That explains the mono type vocals at the beginning of Heroes.
Yup and exact same chords - which to be fair is literally the most common chord change in popular music - but it makes perfect sense he was probably jamming on the VU song when Heroes came out.
