Season one is set in 1994/95 - during the last years of the conflict in northern ireland before the ‘good friday agreement’ in 1998. This show gets better and better - glad you are reacting!

Watch again, with subtitles on, and it explains that James came with his mom from England, who left him at his aunt & cousin Michelle’s house. The nun explains that James was originally going to attend a boy’s school, but they were afraid for his safety, since he is English. The show is set in Northern Ireland (different from the Republic of Ireland, to the south) and there is a loooong history of intense conflict between the Irish and the English who took over the northern areas of Ireland centuries ago. Specifically this show focuses on the time period of the 1990’s (and one episode references the 70’s) which were known as “The Troubles.” The accents in Northern Ireland are a little different from the accents in the south, and some of the slang is local or from the 1990’s.
The show is great, both funny and touching, having great character development over the series, and includes important historical events as well as personal issues for all the characters.

Derry is in Northern Ireland which is still a part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland is Independent and not a part of the UK. Northern Ireland at this time (90s) there were still the Troubles which was a long conflict mostly based on the Catholics and Protestants.

James' mother went to England to get an abortion as I believe abortions were might not have been legal in Ireland at the time. So, he was raised in England. His mother returned to Northern Ireland with him and they were staying with Michelle's family. Then James' mother went back to England without him, leaving him with Michelle and her mom. I don't think we see Michelle's dad in the series and we find out she has a brother later on in the series.

Abortions have only been made legal a few years ago and the requirements are dreadful for it. Got an earful form the women in my life complaining about it, i feel bad for them
