An unstoppable force (liam neeson) meets an immovable object (uncle colm)
NEVER Mess with a McCool.
@@NawiXXIyup. They literally got 'cool' in their name.
Michael Collins starring Liam qoute
Liam Neeson took “scale” or actors’ union minimum pay to play the role in this episode because he’s from Northern Ireland near Derry and the show’s first 2 seasons were such a hit, culturally and commercially, that he said he called and asked because he wanted to be part of it, also that he was “delighted to play a wee part”.
Same with Ardal O'Hanlon who played the guy the girls pushed out of the way for the boat song. While not on the same level as Neeson, he was a famous actor who just wanted to be a part because he loved the show.
@@irisblue2332wasn’t that auntie bridie’s son? mary and sarah’s cousin?
Yep! I believe his name is Eamon @@hellbunniez3
I like throughout the seasons how the Grandfather is always nice to James, even though he was raised in England. Especially considering how he goes after Jerry.
You’d think it would be the other way around since James is English and Jerry Irish 😂
Yeah but what you have to understand is that in Derry that abuse is a sign of affection (weird I know)
Sure he talks the same to Jim across the road sometimes too
Griefing and slagging is what we do all the time with friends... grand if you can take it even better if you can give it back
If you get upset and annoyed or angry then "bye"!
@@thecircledk8597 I've watched this show many times, and in no point do I get the feeling he is doing it because he has any affection for Jerry. He absolutely doesn't treat his other male friends or family in the same way. Jim is clearly his best friend (up until the rabbit), and rarely has he shown him any "slagging". I understand what you mean about this type of verbal abuse/slagging being a sign of affection, even beyond Derry, but I don't believe it's the case between these two characters.
@@gpaje
Listen buddy I am from Derry...
my best mates mum goes on exactly like that with me and has for years...I was a teen in the 90's as well
But when push comes to shove she has always been there for me
@@thecircledk8597 I understand your point buddy, but your personal experience in the town doesn't mean it's what the show is doing. You realize it's a TV show, the Grandpa Joe's abuse on Jerry is not affection. The writers even mention it in past interviews about their relationship. They interviewed Ian McElhinney, it was clear his character didn't treat Jerry well because he doesn't like him. Again, I understand the actual customs of your town, but it's not the case between Grandpa Joe and Jerry. the writers and actors are not inferring affection between them.
Liam Neeson is from Ballymena in Northern Ireland so he grew up in a catholic family during the troubles. According to Lisa McGee the creator of the show, Helen Mirren had watched the show and told him to watch it, he loved it and got in contact with Lisa.
Also, notice how Liam Neeson's character said "Londonderry" - Unionists/Brits say Londonderry and the Nationalists/Irish say Derry.
Would it be stereotypical if I assumed that because Liam Neeson grew up in a Catholic family then that makes him a Nationalist rather than a Unionist?
@@agenttheater5 Yup so in NI, the Catholics would generally be Irish Nationalist/Republican and the Prodestants would generally be Unionists/Loyalists.
Not realising it was a robbery at first was most likely due to their inate respect for authorities, coumponded by the stress of getting caught breaking in to the school.
Exactly. I just was saying that.
The cat storyline is a mockup as if Seamus is a member of a paramilitary organisation and his family have to cover up his misdeeds. Liam Neeson got involved because it was his hometown and he wanted to support the project. ( The girls are in high school btw not college)
Liam Neeson is from Ballymena. He was a fan of the show and wanted to be involved.
Yep. The neighbour vs neighbour thing was bitter as hell. Jim knows that Seamus did it, and he knows that Joe and Jerry are covering it up. The same scenario must have played out dozens of times during the Troubles. Mistrust and paranoia and compromised morals.
@@GrainneMhaol please don't tell me he is Jew and is actually talking about himself! 😂
I love all of Uncle Colm's appearances but I just about lost it when he got to the Spanish Armada bit, it was so ridiculous - I applaud everyone in the scene for keeping a straight face through those takes
That is one of my favorite moments of the entire show!!! And when the girls are celebrating and hugging him, his happy little “anytime wains” always gets me!!!
Yes I HOWLED at that whole bit. “With thon fake tan” omg 😂😂😂
There is actually a bit of a legend about a Spanish armada ship having saled to Shetland and being shipwrecked. In Shetland they have people that is in their appearances similar to Spanish people. I think they've proven that bloodline as well. But don't know...
Their school is called a “college” but the term is used differently than in the US. They are definitely still in secondary school, or what is known in the US as high school, and are not yet in university or what is often referred to as college in the US, and are still minors as Liam Neeson mentioned. In one of the first episodes, it is mentioned that Orla is age 15 and not that many years have passed since then.
yeah, plus they are sitting their gcses, which happen when you're 15-16
In ther UK college is between school and university
I love the comment “the floods and famine can wait for there is a child in DERRY who needs me to magically alter…” lmao!!!! 😂😂😂
I never expected to see Liam neeson on derry girls😂
Well, he's Irish and Derry Girls is HUGE in Ireland so it isn't that surprising.
@@kassiogomes8498 and Liam Neeson is from Northern Ireland and even grew up / was an adult during the Troubles
He grew up close to Derry! Passed by his hometown on a bus tour near Belfast in 2019 😂 the tour guide pointed it out
This season was delayed because of the pandemic for a couple of years. And yes, Liam Neeson is as Irish as they come. He played Michael Collins in the movie, Michael Collins, the Irish patriot.
Liam Neeson is from Northern Ireland. He was born in Ballymena
He's Northern Irish
@@darrengeoghegan1895 yes but he identifies as Irish, Irish passport, etc. etc.
@@darrengeoghegan1895 so you know people that live in northern Ireland can identify as British or Irish or both it’s very unique circumstance
@@jgg59 I have both passports. Yet identity with where I'm from as does our effing Liam. So hands off, like our football team all over again. 😆 🤣 😂 😹
One of the big issues that needed resolution for Peace to become a reality was the fact that the Police, in the form of the Royal Ulster Constabulary, had almost no Catholic officers and was peceivd to be vey much an English/ Unionist tool. The whole police service was dismantled and re-emerged as the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Things aren't perfect still, but are considerably more balanced.
That Police interview segment is one of my favourite ever!
The Good Friday agreement 98 and Patten Report 1999 recommended a 50:50 spilt between Catholic and Protestant police officers. This implementation was abolished in 2011, but by 2019, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) was approximately 32% Catholic officers. While not perfect and some way from 50%, this imbalance is a lot less than the previous Royal Ulster Constabulary when at the organisation's perk over 90% of serving officers were Protestants.
Another thing from this era was that "petty" crime was incredibly low in Northern Ireland at the time. The paramilitaries in both communities "policed" their communities (ie the consequences for stealing etc were harsh). So we weren't actually that used to things being stolen all that much. And crime like that that would have happened was unlikely to be against a school, and against a religious institution. So although it was hammed up for the comedy, them not suspecting a robbery was partly period specific. They were street wise (in theory) in relation to guns and bombs but not in relation to things young people in other parts of the word would be.
Lady Immaculate College = American high school. American College = University in Ireland & other Western European countries I believe
Colm coming in so clutch made me smile.
They are not in college, they are in high school. They are about 15-16 years old going to start their A'Levels which are two years of studying before A Level exams to then enter University
18:04 this happened to Queen’s university students!!! People turned up in fluorescent jackets and clipboards and said they were replacing the furniture and buggered off with the whole jolly jingbang lot in a van 😳
I'd been gleefully waiting for you guys to get to the Liam Neeson scene and you two did not disappoint 😂
I could watch that forever. Colm really shines here lmao
I really appreciate Michelle's look of satisfaction as they weaponize Colm against the police.
@@WereMikeAnd the way she leans against him too is priceless 😂
They’re in secondary school (high school) final year of gcse is like equivalent to end of softmore. So they’re like 16 years old going on 17. You can then stay on at school for two years of sixth form for A-levels, leave school for work or join a tech/ college before university. but not like USA college, it’s something you can do at any age though from 16 onwards.
Liam Neeson was born in Ballymena (sort of an Easter egg hearing him mention his birthplace).
Liam Nielson and Uncle Coln must be my fave scene in anything all time.
Not Seamus the cat as a metaphor for an IRA fighter! 💀
I like how quickly the derry girls reactions are coming!!!!
GCSE Results Day is a really big deal. The results are for courses you have been folllowing for the previous 2 years, up to the age of 16, and the results dictate whether you can stay on at school for 'A' Levels, or have to leave and take a lower level college course, or get a job. There is no overall grade, but a grade in each separate subject, usually about 8-10 courses. Most of the grading is on final exams, set and marked at a national level, so you have no clue until results day how you have done.
These reactions are basically Jaby and Andrew trying to not die of laughter 🤭
i watched this episode during a night flight and i could barely contain my laughter
seeing how much you guys are enjoying this show, you GOTTA watch the main cast's episode of the Great British Bake Off!!
The episode of the Crystal Maze they did was great as well.
@@seangriffiths4967 yes yes yes! the difference between their and Richard Ayoade's energies is hilarious
Started watching the show because of your reactions…and it has now become one of my favourite shows of all time ✨💜
You know that show is good if you're devastated when it ends
It's exactly why i started watching the show too... Started the first episode with Jaby and got through the whole show in two days. Enjoying these Reactions tremendously
Liam Neeson being in this episode was definitely a surprise. Judging by the way Jaby was laughin at Clare going "Haven't you seen In the Name of the Father?!" that he's seen that movie. I would honesty still recommend that one for the channel though, It was probably one of the best movies I watched in a high school class I took - grade 11 or 12 Law class I think.
Ah, people who don't watch the whole video XD
@@Emburbujada I actually did watch the whole video, sorry you couldn't tell by my comment
sister Michael and clare(spelling) are the best characters her dry humor vs clare outburst n facial expressions is always spot on
My parents and I have been gradually making our way through Daniel Day-Lewis’ filmography over the past three months, and I can confidently say that In the Name of the Father and My Left Foot are two of this best roles ever. I would love to say a reaction/commentary for both of them on this channel!
He's the greatest actor of our time. Last of the Mohicans is fantastic as well! My Left Foot was my late mother's fave.
I heard that Helen Mirren introduced Liam Neeson to the show and he loved it and Colm was his favorite, so they managed to get a script to him and he jumped at the chance to do it. They kept it totally secret till the episode aired. There was even a screening with 300 people in Derry and all 300 of them kept his appearance totally secret!
College is not "college" the same way it is in North America. College years would be the equivalent to 11th grade and 12th grade (or the Diploma Programme in the IB, for any international school kids.)
I am so glad you a guys are finally watchin Season 3... it was so hard to not say who would be in this one... I was so shocked to see Liam Neeson love him ... I never laughed so hard at an episode... when Erin kept say for the tape ... i about wet my pants lol... and having Uncle Colm when he always says I says to myself, says I Colm lol...whos's ringing at these hrrrrrr lol... they are in high school...as the show goes you will see...
I love In the Name of the Father. Based on true events. Daniel Day Lewis was nominated but didn't win. Tom Hanks won for Philadelphia.
Daniel Day Lewis won for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln.
He was also nominated for Gangs of New York and Phantom Thread.
He's one of the greats
GCSE results would be in the summer between your equilivant of sophomore and junior year of high school
And the stress of getting those results cannot compare to a test result in high school - imagine if you found out on one day whether or not you were going to graduate high school and none of your previous grades matter
The Derry Girls are high school or secondary school over there they were taking their A levels to hopefully qualify for university
The term “troubles” I was how the English media reported about what was happening in NI. They kept minimizing what was happening and calling them troubles without reporting what the English Army was actually doing.
They put the threat level up again in Northern Ireland to severe (which is a 4 out of 5). Let’s just hope we’re not heading backwards.
What I miss about VHS and even DVDs are the trailers for films. I know they are all on RUclips but I am not a person who would go looking for movie trailers on YT. It was nice to put in a film and see an ad for a film you might want to rent next time.
In regards to them not realising it was a break in they were breaking in so they might just have been desperate to get rid of them in case they are there legally realise the Derry girls are breaking in.
Funny thing. Liam Neeson is actually from Ballymena (the place they mentioned).
During the pandemic it felt forever we were going to get another season
Awe sad times haha
At the min 10:48 you both sounded irish lol.
Thats what watching shows with accents does to ya 😂
The Netflix movie is Outlaw King, it's actually one of my favorite historical movies!
Liam Neeson is Irish if you guys didn't know and I wouldn't be shocked if he was a fan of the show he definitely would have said yes to making an appearance
TBH Lisa McGee in interviews would get asked who would be her dream guest stars and she named a few... he was one... all she had to do was ask because it was the biggest show to ever come out of NI and Liam is a Ballymena man which is only an hour from Derry (or 50 miles)
They're in high-school Jaby! You sit you GCSEs at the end of 10th grade (or maybe 11th grade in some places idk). And I think when they say "college" in the UK it's more like the last 2 years of hs
Claire mentions In the name of the father, it is a class film in fairness, Daniel day lewis
Colm boring the hell out of the detectives is such a great payoff of the running joke about how tedious he is.
they did not get liam neeson as much as liam neeson begged to be on in whatever capacity 😂
Started watching Irish content after seeing them actually have the balls to stand up and oppose a genocide and say "not again". Now that I know their history I realise, never have there been a braver people in the Western world.
I got caught in the moment of them breaking in and thought “oh they got caught by janitors cleaning out the storeroom.” It wasn’t till they put it in the van that I realized what was happening. I got caught in the moment so I don’t blame them for not noticing either
Re Braveheart, yes it’s inaccurate. Not much is known about William Wallace other than he was a minor lord, as far as we know he never met Robert the Bruce however, it was Bruce who was actually known as Braveheart - so much so that after his death Scottish soldiers continued to carry his heart into battle.
Great movie but it's not a documentary, kids.
Would LOVE a Name of the Father reaction!
I was waiting to see your reaction when liam Leeson appeared .Ps .GCSEs are an exam taken at 16 General Certificate of Secondary Education .Next exam is A levels .Advanced levels .Takes 2 Years . These are needed for University entrance.
It was a pleasant surprise when I saw Liam Neeson in this when I first watched it.
You are correct that Braveheart is not accurate. I’ve taken multiple courses on British History and they’ve covered many of the military conflicts between England and Scotland and Ireland. William Wallace was a real person that was highly involved in the conflict that inspired Bravheart. However, his socio-economic-socio-political background and role in the fight for Scottish independence were both changed significantly for the film. Historical Robert the Bruce was more like the film William Wallace than historical William Wallace was, and the film Outlaw King shows that very well.
I've been waiting for this one lads, and your reactions didn't disappoint 😂😂😂
Wait until episode 6, what a turn.
They are actually in high school. All of them are either in their late 20’s or early 30’s. They play teens very well though.
Kevin McAleer ( Colm) is a master of the off kilter monologue 😊😊😊
Liam even says the town he is from as it’s only an hour away from Derry… Ballymena. Xx
In India too we call grades 11 and 12 "Junior college". Students are still 17 and minors going on to 18 when they pass out.
Liam Neeson scene...gold
They are in high school, 16 or 17 years old
They wear uniforms, what they call college is the last years of high school before going to university
They are in high school. If they were Collage age why would James need to live with his Aunt. Also in this episode they literally needed to get Colm as Liam states they are minors.
It will be interesting to see your joint reaction to the films "Robocop" and "Robocop 3". This is a cool immortal classic 👍
I absolutely love the Colm payoff you get after setting him up as incredibly dull and long-winded for two seasons xD
I think they are in high school, but in Ireland they call it college. Our (U.S.) college is their University. So, I believe they are high school age. However, in reality the actors are all in their late 20s when this show was on.
Braveheart is one of the least historically accurate films ever made
Fact
Like it's not even just historically inaccurate, it's the most historically inaccurate
Jaby's reaction to this show is my guilty pleasure.
Liam Neeson is actually from Ballymena. Maybe he knew the jewish guy...
Daniel Day Lewis did not win an Oscar for In The Name Of The Father! He was nominated alongside Liam Neeson for Schindler's List! Tom Hanks won that year for Philadelphia!
They are in high school
I wonder if those robbers were the same robbers in season 1 when they chained Colm to the radiator that episode the girls went to clean Vanilla's store.
Fionnuala's
Liam the legend himself lol
So after 2nd season in one of the interviews the maker Lisa Mcgee admitted that several celebrities requested to be a part of the show in some way. So it won’t be surprising if Liam Neeson did it for free
Liam Neeson asked them if he could appear in an episode!
Be Kind. Rewind.
GCSE results are in last year of high school..so they are now starting College/sixth form. Or you could just leave education. Makes them 17
Or 16, im 16 and im in sixth-form
@@cameron856 or 16…I hope you’re enjoying sixth form.
Fully here just to say that my family had a separate rewind machine for our VHS, specifically because my dad was concerned we'd wear out the tape heads in the VCR if we did too much ff/rew. #only90sthings
"...And for the love of suffering Jesus, take him [Colm] with you." Bwahahaha.
The grammar schools here are CALLED colleges here but we use the word UNIVERSITY for what you americans call college. My school was Thornhill college (derry girls is based on it) and you go from age 11-18 unless you fail your GCSEs , in which case you leave age 16
They are US high school aged but those upper years are called college there.
I think them not catching on they were criminals was because being raised in small Catholic schools, you get used to not questioning authority or weird things adults speaking with a certain tone do. Plus you can be so self absorbed at that age that you care more about you not getting caught than questioning why an adult is doing something questionable.
This is sadly how some adults get away with things. Plus making kids feel like if they tell they are part of "the crime".
I love this series so much that it is so sad that Season 3 is their final season. I love your reactions as usual and Claire is always the best.
Liam Neeson IS a Derry Girl.
Love these reactions
I remember how I had to wait 3 years for the new season. Learned the first 2.
You guys should react to the cast of derry girls comedy sketches for Comic relief and Red nose day. It's so hilarious
These are very clearly high school girls, y’all.
Liam Neeson is Irish
Daniel day Lewis is half Irish as his dad was born in Ireland so he has Irish citizenship
In the name of the father he’s falsely accused of committing an IRA bombing, it’s like the San Antonio Four it really happened
Still no Warrior Episode 3 reaction? Would just like to know if it's going to continue or not at this point 😥
The Outlaw King
Liam Neeson seeing the first two seasons: "I will find you and I will call you."
They were getting their G.C.S.E.'s so they would be 16. They're at High School/Secondary School.
Orla says she’s 15 in the first episode
Mel Gibsons accent in Braveheart is an atrocity
When’s the next Warrior reaction coming? 👀👀👀
They're definitely not college student haha, they're in high school.
