I have a 2017 Platinum F-150. Some of things I realized about this trim level. - I could do without the sunroof. I've opened it twice, or maybe three times in the years I've owned it. I'd much rather not have the sunroof and get back that added weight as payload. - I could do without the messaging seats. Again, I've only used them a couple of times since I've owned the vehicle. - I could do without the lane keep assist, but I just turn that off. The one thing I would never be without again in any vehicle. - Adaptive cruise control. The things I really like but wouldn't be absolute deal breakers for me, but I would try really, really, really hard to have. - Heated and ventilated seats. - Heated steering wheel. - Heated mirrors
It would be interesting if you did a weigh at a CAT scale so we could see exactly what the payload in the truck is since the dash scale seems very vague. You would then have some kind of an idea as to what each mark on the payload scale represents. Great videos. Thanks.
A note on the 10 speed transmission; my 2021 Superduty took about 4,000 miles of driving between towing, and not towing in eco mode before it settled on shift points. Once it did, it’s smoother than snot on a Teflon coated suit.
I agree with the shifting on the 10 speed. My HO Ram with the Aisin in tow haul mode had very good shift points and just feels right. My close friend and neighbor has a 10 speed GMC Denali 3500 and his said his 10 speed kind of hunts through the gears while pulling his Toy Hauler. He doesn't like that compared to his older 6 speed Denali. Ford has really stepped up their game and I hear 2025 will be even better. Thanks for the video.
My friend also has a 2024 Denali dually and towing the same trailer trans hunts more than his 2019 with a 6 speed, but you have to remember the new one has 3:31 rear verses 3:73 , My 2020 450 tows a 21k fifth wheel and you hardly notice it hunting for the right gear, but its also has a 4:30 rear
Funny enough my experince is the opposite. I went from a 2015 ram HO/Aisin to a 24 Chevy Duramax and the 10 speed. I think the 10 speed does way less hunting than my old 6 speed. I ppend a lot of time out west in the mounatins. The old 6 speed would always jump between 3/4 4/5 when trying to go up and down hills. I always felt that the i needed inbetween gears so it wasn't always shifting up and down trying to maintain speed. I would pick the 10 speed always over my old 6 speed.
My 2024 Silverado Duramax with a 10 speed doesn't hunt for gears at all while pulling a 42 ft 5th wheel. It tows it like it's nothing. I also have a 2.5" leveling kit with 20" wheels and 35" tires and I'm averaging about 11mpg...and I don't drive slow.
Great video. I think you should go to a CAT scale and verify the numbers. The transmission is a learning unit. It may smooth out after you pull a few times. Nice truck.
Nice. I'm happy you finally got the truck you wanted. Once you get more miles on the truck you're fuel mileage will get better. I've got 66,000@ on my Cummings Dually. I was getting 9@ mpg pulling 18,000 lb 5th wheel when new. Now, it's up to 11-12 on average, pulling it.
I thought I was the only one who towed a 15,000lb trailer at around 70 ish-allegedly-mine is actually 19,000 gross -thing is my tow vehicle is a 2017 f350 diesel-non dually. Works perfect since 2019 when I bought it used . Rated for my weight too. Newer Big and dually is nice too. Life is good.
Nope, you are not. 2024 Chevy Duramax dually with a 42 ft 5th wheel. It pulls like a dream between 70-75mph. I know I shouldn't, but sometimes I hit 80. But people should tow at the speed that they feel most comfortable. There's no shame in going a little slower.
Great video on towing with your new F-450. We’ve a 2024 F-450 and love the how it tows our 18.5K Vanleigh Beacon…very smooth. I would agree that coming from a 2018 F-350 DRW with the 6 speed the 10 speed seems to shift a little firmer 1-5 gears but is fine in the upper gears. We typically get 9-10 mpg unless we have a head wind then we’re down around 8 mpg.
Thank you buddy, I was waiting for you to talk about the lane-keeping assistance and you already answered my curiosity. It would be nice to see the truck at night with all the lights on and the heads-up display. 😊 It's going to be really warm this weekend so remember to keep an eye on your tire pressure monitor. Anyway, buddy, enjoy your 🇺🇸 weekend, stay safe, god bless you and your family.
Awesome, thank you so much JD for sharing I really wish all of the trucks manufactory would put that feature into there navigation system where it would let you program the type and the weight of your RV so you wouldn't need to get another RV GPS. Man, I have to say that you are very bless the Lord has been good to you and your family. We are planning on getting out on the road this weekend and I just can't wait, hey brother safe travel to you and your family and be safe.
Thanks for taking us along on the first tow! Been saying it, but that technology is even better than I expected. Hope the camping was as good as the drive🎉🎉
I have the same truck. Just so you know twisting the drive mode knob only adjusts the drive modes. To engage your 4wd and low range you actually push the button where the light is at.
In four years I’ve opened my Explorer Sunroof maybe 4 times! My daughter opens hers every time she drives her car. We live in Idaho so the heated mirrors are a must. The rest you either enjoy, get used to, or don’t use that feature. You paid a lot for those! This is for mcgilm69..
So this navigation is Ford’s program? I think it’s neat how they had all of the bridge heights already for you. I figured you would have to have an app on your phone for that. Have you ever considered buying a 550?
It's funny that you talk about the technology in this truck like the speed limit notification. I own a 2003 Lincoln Aviator (21 years old) that gives me an audible speed limit notification.😄
Nice to see that your '24 has a compass in the instrument cluster. My '23 does not, which is really annoying. There is no compass at all unless Carplay nav is running. I had heard that Ford would do an OTA update to add it last fall, but it hasn't happened yet.
I have a 2022 F350 and have noticed from day one the same hard shifting in gears 1 to 4 when I have my camper hooked. I think it is the 10 speed transmission.
Soooo here is some good real world information on almost the same truck. I have a 2024 Ford F350 SRW 6.7HO Platinum Tremor towing a 2024 Brinkley Z3610, trip ready the Brinkley is just under 18k pounds and three adult passengers. I have according to the CAT Scales about 100 pounds of GVWR and about 120 pounds of payload and about 60 pounds of GAWR. The internal Truck scale says I’m over. Even though I am just inside the limits. I just finished a trip from Dallas,TX to Santa Rosa, Beach Florida / just passed Destin. Traveling at 75 and 78 mph I averaged 9.1 miles per gallon. It was about 1500 miles round-trip. I’ve towed the RV with this truck just under 4000 miles and averaged 8.9 miles to the gallon. I recently added airbags and at 50 PSI it eliminates any chucking that came with certain concrete roads. I love the truck but every now and then I think maybe I should’ve gotten a F450.
We have the 2019 392MBL Chaparral, it's the version just below the Brookstone. It's been a great rig outfitted for full time with Victron Inverters, 1500w on the roof and 700aH of lithium. We've crisscrossed the country several times, been from Glacier NP to the Keys in FL. The RV has a good 50k miles on it today. On it's 2nd set of brakes. It's held up really well, only minor issues to repair. We've not had any of the frame flex issues that some of the more expensive brands have had. Despite taking way too far off road as we love to boondock. Been full timing 7 years, 5 of which has been in the Chaparral. Can't think of a better rig.
Hi I have watched your channel for a long time and have learned a lot and I want to tell you about the truck that I special ordered. The truck is an F350 Lariat extend a cab long box dually with the 10 speed connected to the 7.3 v8 Godzilla with 4.30 gear ratio. I built the truck to haul a heavy truck camper, it has the same GVW as yours 14000 pounds and my payload capacity is 6405 pounds and the combined weight is 26000 pounds because of the 4.30 ratio, this is a killer truck, star white with stone grey two tone I love it and wish that I could send you a picture of it.
I noticed the hard shifting when towing with my new 2024 F350. Good to know it's not just me. Hoping it will get smoother over time. Also, I don't think the HUD notifies you when you are exceeding the speed limit which is what I expected. According to my user manual, when the speed limit display changes to filled then returns to non-filled that is because the 360 camera system read the speed limit from a road sign you just passed and updated the displayed value to match.
Hi I have watched your channel for a long time and have learned a lot and I want to tell you about the truck that I special ordered. the truck is a 2021 F350 Leriatextend a cab dually long box with the 10 speed connected to the 7.3 v8 Godzilla with 4.30 gear ratio
Nice review. I have a 22 F450 and love the truck. Only thing I'd like to see is the tow mirrors being able to be extended a couple more inches on each side for better rear viewing.
Yes a couple more inches would be Major! Noticed on the cab and chassis models they offer a 102" mirror option ,but with no frills just heat and adjustment
I love to hear MPG done from a Pin and Paper / also what your Tran temp is when towing / can you tell a difference in the 500hp engine over the 2017 ??
I like hiw the dash changes with tow mode as well as the other modes. Only thing I'm unsure of is my coolant temp at start up it always says 86 degrees another guy I know his always starts up with coolant temp of negative 26 degrees seems there is obviously a glitch of sorts my last truck showed Clos to ambient air temp on start yp
I also agree my 22 f350 6.7 powerstroke hunts for gears and I just feel like it’s not really programmed to find the best gear for the truck even though I have a 355 gear ratio I feel like it just wants to get to tent gear as fast as possible even if it needs it kind of bogs down the engine. It’s almost like it’s programmed for fuel economy, not power band. Unloaded I would say it’s more of an exaggerated tow haul feeling almost like it’s quick to go first third, fifth, sixth, seventh eighth ninth 10th and then realizing you’re in 10th gear at 52 mph and you can hear the engine almost get to that 1100 RPM wanting to bog out I have no idea why the transmission wants to shift like that. It’s definitely not a dealership thing because they’ll check to see if it updates are current and you can go ahead and reflash it and put it back in a learning mode but at the end the day it’s gonna shift the way it was programmed the shift from the manufacture, and it’s kinda love it or hate it or drive it because you’re kind of stuck with it. Don’t get me even started about driving this thing through our mountain passes in the snow or even just trying to get in and out of my property during the snow. This thing starts slipping and rather than the RPMs, jumping up it just wants to shift which is not a confidence inspiring feeling knowing that you’re seeing it in third gear and you start to lose your momentum because it feels like it’s shifting up because the truck is getting confused on the situation.
I’m a visual learner and less an audio. Can you please show the procedure your explaining in getting the truck into “tow mode” dialing the “knob” to the left….. I, and I’m sure many would love to see the process…. Thanks for all you do and the awesome content.
Have you ever checked the MPG with your own calculator ? I don't know about Fords - but, most GM vehicles I've owned through the years were a couple MPG off. I couldn't quite tell what type of hitch the trailer has - and, have you had others to compare it to ? I'm looking for the smoothest ride while pulling. Very informative video !!!
Love the truck! The weathers 90 degrees?? Bye the way what are the trailer tires rated for on max speed??? I love to get on it myself but most trailers tires are rated for 65 mph max please be careful! want you to enjoy your trips friend!
In general, love the heads-up display, but I don't like that I have to turn it up to full bright to barely see it with polarized sunglasses. I have this problem in all my vehicles with heads-up displays.
It’s a shifting stiffer because it has way more HP and torque. The stock tune is approx 60% power. My 2021 is the standard 6.7 not HO. Towing 5th Montana about 12k fuel 10.8 to 13 MPG
Love your new truck! Looks like a nice tow! The rv look great be hide it. Can you do a video where you test your truck skill vs an cat skill! Love the video! Have a great day!
That a good idea since you're towing a 30ft trailer with an SUV. I'm personally not a fan of towing anything other than a utility trailer with any SUV, and I have owned a Sequoia. My 2024 Duramax dually, towing a 42ft 5th wheel, tows great between 70-75 mph. But it's a bigger vehicle with much more stability than an SUV. Personally I think it's dangerous to everyone on the road for someone to be towing a travel trailer with an SUV. I also live by the motto, "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should".
That’s funny right here in the very beginning of the video you keep pointing to the weight but my eyes keep going to the right and I’m seeing the temperature. Oh I am so glad I’m not where you are.😂😂😂
Glad to see everything went well on your maiden voyage with the new truck. Does your new truck have adaptive steering, and how does the steering compare to your old F-450 (which had adaptive steering)?
Another vote for getting the truck scaled and verifying the accuracy of the onboard scale. Given the numbers you gave in the last video it’s waaaaay off.
It's a good question, I would have to test that, but I would also have to turn off the inverter and charging system. My RV onboard battery system is enough to run all three ACs
@@BTBRVReviewsI don’t recall the system you use. My thoughts are with the right set up you could load share off your truck combined with solar and arrive at a boon docking location near full charge and a cool Rv. I’m drawn to the victron multiplus pass thru inverter/charger. Will your system load share? Or put another way will your battery charge while drawing on solar?
Ford says 1,000 miles break in before towing. I had to go drive about 950 miles before I did my first tow. 😅. I also did an immediate oil change after that. And another after my first tow just to be sure all the break in metal shavings are out of the system completely. And finally I did another oil change at 3000. After that I just change oil every 5k. Well under Fords recommended.
I've lived in the heart of Tornado Alley my entire life. When you have lived your whole life around this type of weather, anxiety isn't really a problem. Weather is what it is.
Nice review, happy 4th of July to you and family! Your trans might be going thru a learning process seeing it's your first tow . How does you heads up work with polarized sun glasses? I have been told by friends with different vehicles it's tougher to see heads up with polarized glasses.Lastly nice to hear from other people[wife] should do it more often] in truck on your road trip for additional comments. Had to chuckle ,wife called you last truck Ole Red, is she a Blake Shelton fan?
While towing, we both felt both trucks compared very similarly. The front suspension on the new truck is definitely softer, but that's because it does not have the heavy service front suspension.
I have a stack of Apple iPhone 15pros and Samsung S24s that are exclusively used for general recording. I also have several DSLRs and GoPros that I used when needed.
JD, just watched the video, once again, a great video. Since you said, you average just about 9 miles a gallon from corpus to San Antonio in the new truck how was that compared to the red 450?
Fuel economy while towing was roughly the same. I figured the trade off, is the increased horsepower and torque as well as the 10 speed transmission shifting.
Sorry, JR, 70+ MPH towing puts you in a different world from the one where I full-time RV. I like to have a LOT of safety margin, even with my Chevy 3500 HD dually.
The speed rating of my tires are 75 mph. I typically tow at 65 mph. Bump up the speed a little when I need to pass on the interstate (67-68 mph) then back to 65 mph. I want the tires to last as long as possible.
70-75mph in my 2024 Duramax dually with 42ft 5th wheel. It feels comfortable, tows great, within my tire rating, not a problem at all. But everyone should tow at the speed that they feel comfortable towing. No shame in that.
Does anybody think of when a trailer tire goes, only one tire is asked to hold the entire side up until you slow your ass to the side. That trailer is too big for 2 axles, there’s simply not enough sidewall capability.
Interesting weight numbers in the bed. Granted your still under the max, but I think you need to get to CAT scale to verify those numbers. I personally would be worried, if those numbers were around halfway okay. I think you you are sending the wrong message to your viewers saying it’s okay.
Ignoring the excitement and pride of a new vehicle, and all the latest gadgetry a new model year brings, and ignoring the high effectiveness of the Cummons exhaust brake, would the physical towing experience been any different than towing with a Duramax, Powerstroke SO, or either flavor of the Cummins?
To be honest, all these new diesel trucks pull exceptionally well. I would have to say that the powerstroke is certainly quieter than the Cummins and has a bit more of a linear feel to it. The Cummins tends to feel very commercial and powerful by terms of sheer torque. Also, the Cummins has less gears to shift through which makes it feel a little bit harder when shifting. Regardless though, you really can't go wrong with any of these trucks.
@@BTBRVReviews I currently pull with a 2015 3500 RAM Cummins and have no complaints. I'm thinking about ordering a new tow vehicle but can't decide which one of the three. Thanks for your input.
someone I know just had to pay 9K to fix his emission system , I think I'm done with diesel, these new gassers are getting mpg's much closer to the diesels now
It would be interesting to check the accuracy of the truck scale against your platform/wheel scales.
I have a 2017 Platinum F-150. Some of things I realized about this trim level.

Seems totally necessary the scale it.
He doesn't need a cat scale. He has certified scales at home
This was a pleasant video, a nice change in pace from the channel as of late.
I hope you enjoyed SA while you were here. 🙌
Even the dog in the BTBRV family doesn't divulge its identity.....
It’s amazing how capable these trucks are.
A note on the 10 speed transmission; my 2021 Superduty took about 4,000 miles of driving between towing, and not towing in eco mode before it settled on shift points. Once it did, it’s smoother than snot on a Teflon coated suit.
9mpg with all that weight and wind drag from the 5th wheel is great. Beautiful setup. Classic BTBRV video.

I agree, I was actually mentioning to my wife that the tow mirrors don't really feel as if they truly give me extra visibility on the side.
Be curious about temperatures trans engine etc while towing. Especially towing real weight in your Texas heat.
Wait… what was that tow combination on the right side at 5:40?
You're not that far from Frio river area. Always wanted to go there camping. Maybe you can take the Surveyor there next.....
They do give a scale in the menu on the top right of the screen. It's not exact, but it's a number.
Beautiful truck
I have adaptive cruise option on my 17 Accord and it isn’t my thing. When I tow I prefer to not use cruise especially when it’s hilly.
I’m a visual learner and less an audio. Can you please show the procedure your explaining in getting the truck into “tow mode” dialing the “knob” to the left…..
I, and I’m sure many would love to see the process….
Thanks for all you do and the awesome content.
Hey buddy, that new 450 is awesome! What level of trim do you have? Limited, etc?
Platinum
Have a great trip.
I believe those economy numbers, shift patterns etc will change as break in occurs
Happy 4th have a great trip and love the truck 🤙 🇺🇸
Why the offset gooseball with the long bed truck?
I never tow faster than 65, usually 63mph. 16 Toyota Seqioua 5.7 with a 30ft Jayco trailer. About 9.0 mpg.
JD if you're getting on average 9 mpg you're doing well with that rig.
That’s funny right here in the very beginning of the video you keep pointing to the weight but my eyes keep going to the right and I’m seeing the temperature. Oh I am so glad I’m not where you are.😂😂😂
Great video. Enjoy you family time! Happy 4th of July!
HUD should be on every vehicle. I love it on my f350
Ten speed is nice but the L5P is the best motor out right now
You have a Long Bed truck (8') why the goose ball offset?
Just That big Price tag EEEeee
I like the addt’l info on center display & dash instrument layout compared to our 2021 F350 (almost paid off so no new truck for me, lol).
mine shifts hard for the 1st couple gears
Glad to see everything went well on your maiden voyage with the new truck. Does your new truck have adaptive steering, and how does the steering compare to your old F-450 (which had adaptive steering)?
Another vote for getting the truck scaled and verifying the accuracy of the onboard scale. Given the numbers you gave in the last video it’s waaaaay off.
I plan on scaling the rig. But, the numbers are close. ~3600pin + ~250 in toolbox and truck + ~450 in people and dog.
how well does the adaptive cruise work to factor in the extra weight?
Do u miss your f450 2017
CAT vs door weight limits?
Is it irrational that the display not being a dually would bug me haha. Very nice set up, love the content.
Thanks for sharing :)
What is your CGVWR? Do you need a CDL with that truck?
Pin weight of that model trailer is only 2500lbs why so heavy on the scale?
With a soft start can you run one Ac using truck inverter?
It's a good question, I would have to test that, but I would also have to turn off the inverter and charging system. My RV onboard battery system is enough to run all three ACs
@@BTBRVReviewsI don’t recall the system you use. My thoughts are with the right set up you could load share off your truck combined with solar and arrive at a boon docking location near full charge and a cool Rv. I’m drawn to the victron multiplus pass thru inverter/charger. Will your system load share? Or put another way will your battery charge while drawing on solar?
Is that 1161 miles on the odo? If so what does Ford say about towing and break-in?
1000miles
Ford says 1,000 miles break in before towing. I had to go drive about 950 miles before I did my first tow. 😅. I also did an immediate oil change after that. And another after my first tow just to be sure all the break in metal shavings are out of the system completely. And finally I did another oil change at 3000. After that I just change oil every 5k. Well under Fords recommended.
Good job, does your blind spot work with trailer attached?
Be careful and keep eye on that dragon of a hurricane heading towards Texas brother. As a south Floridian I feel your guys anxiety.
I've lived in the heart of Tornado Alley my entire life. When you have lived your whole life around this type of weather, anxiety isn't really a problem. Weather is what it is.
I wouldn’t worry about mpg with only 1300 miles on the truck. I’m willing to bet it will get better later on. How heavy is that RV?
You did nt mention the power difference I am sure this thing feels a ton quicker with 1200 ft lbs
Wife notice a difference when towing?
While towing, we both felt both trucks compared very similarly. The front suspension on the new truck is definitely softer, but that's because it does not have the heavy service front suspension.
dumbs question.. what camera are you using and what is your recording speed?
I have a stack of Apple iPhone 15pros and Samsung S24s that are exclusively used for general recording. I also have several DSLRs and GoPros that I used when needed.
JD, just watched the video, once again, a great video. Since you said, you average just about 9 miles a gallon from corpus to San Antonio in the new truck how was that compared to the red 450?
Fuel economy while towing was roughly the same. I figured the trade off, is the increased horsepower and torque as well as the 10 speed transmission shifting.
JD the weight didn’t include you!
The only RV camper RUclips channel that never shows faces….I just find that interesting.
There's a story behind that I'd almost bet money.
Interesting weight numbers in the bed. Granted your still under the max, but I think you need to get to CAT scale to verify those numbers. I personally would be worried, if those numbers were around halfway okay. I think you you are sending the wrong message to your viewers saying it’s okay.
I was told that the new 10 speeds ford makes shifts based on drivin habits. The more you drive it the smoother it gets. "SUPPOSEDLY"
Mine did
Ignoring the excitement and pride of a new vehicle, and all the latest gadgetry a new model year brings, and ignoring the high effectiveness of the Cummons exhaust brake, would the physical towing experience been any different than towing with a Duramax, Powerstroke SO, or either flavor of the Cummins?
Why is that so heavy and why are you going over 70 pulling a 5th wheel trailer.
someone I know just had to pay 9K to fix his emission system , I think I'm done with diesel, these new gassers are getting mpg's much closer to the diesels now
