I've had my PS5 sitting in a store somewhere since launch, absolutely zero issues.
same
Ditto
This happens to ps5's that are poorly closed after opening the heatsink beacuse of repair shops, if you didn't open your ps5 or it wasn't opened once by a reapir shop, well then it's good
You never miss a shot that you fail to ever take.
Since all the big releases from Sony have been multi platform, I’ll stick with my PS4 pro until the 5 pro comes out. Then I’ll upgrade. Not missing much IMO.
I personally like to keep my ps5 at a 37° clockwise tilt with liquid nitrogen cooling in a quantum computer chassis.

Vertical gang since launch zero issues
Same. Vertical is the only way it'll fit on my shelf.
Facts. It looks better vertical.
Unfortunately I believe my overheating problem is because it's been horizontal since I've gotten it
I've had mine vertical since launch and never had any issues until about 2 weeks ago when it started turning off randomly when I played intensive games for too long, I'm about to give it the deepest clean possible so hopefully that fixes it. If not then I'm gonna have to investigate this pooling thing that people say is the problem

Ive had my liquid cooled PC vertical for like 7 years with liquid metal with no problems. The liquid metal won't move anywhere :D
This reply should be upvoted more often. The reel is pointless
You know I'm glad you posted this cause I've never seen anyone mention this. They act like the ps5 is the first ever use case for liquid metal. It's just the first mass produced consumer item that has liquid metal
@Liam the yt shorts "reel" and the like button "upvote" 😆
Pretty much this. I don't know the last time anyone built a PC that had the mobo flat. The Mobo is almost always vertical and so is the Liquid Metal and CPU. The heatsink if placed properly prevents the Liquid Metal from moving around.

I have had mine vertically since day one of launch. No issues at all on my PS5.
It's not an immediate issue... it's more of an issue that comes up later after some years maybe 2 or 3
@@kristianhans7588 well I have had my PS5 on vertical since November 12, 2020. I’m 7 months away from completing my 2-3 years, so if it lasts longer than that, clearly it’s false. Two of my work buddies have also had it on vertical since the same date. So far nothing.
@@kristianhans7588 Sounds like it's only an issue if you open up the console.
@@alexmendez3681 3 is a small sample size to say something is false. It probably doesn’t affect every PS5…
Liquid metal is conductive, thermal paste is not. It can short out circuits.
It's moving because it's open, mounting pressure is a thing for a reason
It also looked there was a little too much liquid metal on there. Less is more with this stuff, even with regular thermal pastes that are not-conductive.
I used to use liquid metal and said never again after I almost killed my gpu.
It slowly creped out the bottom until a little bead fell on my GPU, breaking one of its resistors. GPU still works thankfully.
I would not recommend liquid metal for anything other than delidding tbh.
wtf is moving??? its not metal!!! wth???
It's metal with a low melting temperature allowing it to stay liquid at room temperature. Always make sure to just spread a small layer on both surfaces and use a barrier. It does look like they used too much but it shouldn't cause issues.
@@jasonls221 im sorry, i never saw this before. i read something about it now and i have more questions than before. like: if someone use this, shouldn't he know what he is doing? and 2nd: why he think, everyone with a ps5 have this problem? is on every ps5 chip this liquid metal or is it modded by him self?
Ive had my launch ps5 vertical the whole time. It has ran like a champ. Never had to replace a single controller either. Never experienced stick drift and I play competitive games.
True but you also need to know that the distance between the APU die and the heatsink copper plate is soo thin that the liquid metal film will not have enough wiggleroom to flow that freely. But that being said, the space outside the contact area is a whole other thing. It always pools up there as we see on every ps5 repair videos.
Called surface tension.

Having the heatsink in place will create enough pressure to keep the thermal liquid in place just like in PCs where 90% of the time the cpu is mounted horizontally
💯 this guy showing it like he has knowledge of good , when no one plays a PS5 or gaming system without a heatsink bolted
My girlfriends ps5 frequently overheated until we turned it horizontal, opened it, and vaccumed any dust out of it. It stopped and never did it again.

Thermal grease will be just fine when under the mild pressure by the heat sink and clamp any which way you have it. It will also completely fill all the subtle imperfections on both mating surfaces.
I also have mine horizontal, but I actually like it that way. plus makes me feel better

@Terminator-spiderman edition🤔
@Terminator-what about inside out?
I'm so glad you brought this up, I've had the same complaint about using this in a PC build. Because your motherboard stands vertical. And people have argued with me about it
Anyone who's familiar with LM in the PC scene could have seen this coming. On PC's you need to periodically reapply LM (usually once every year or two when you notice your temps are higher than normal) because it will gradually shift and pool up at the bottom in a vertical environment which is most PC's. It's not nearly as big a deal for a PC since they are easier to take apart and reassemble but I always thought it odd to use LM in a console where you aren't meant to be easily taking it apart.
It's probably just safer to keep it horizontal. I do hope the eventual PS5 slim is low power enough that they can just go back to using regular thermal paste.
So why am I not reading about millions of failures of the PS5? They came out in 2020. The design of the heat sink helps to keep the liquid metal in place, so only a failure in the assembly process would mean a failure of the PS5.
REALLY, this would be in tech news, which I watch everyday on multiple tech channels and I've seen nothing of the sort.
Never heard of that in the last 25 years since I'm build my own PCs and upgrading not even with WC. Don't know what you are talking about.
@@johndoh5182 Its people misunderstanding the issue
When the device is in use regularly as the heating of the chip causes capillary effect to draw the LM back up the cooler - the issue is for devices that are stored vertically and unused for multiple months, such as those sitting on store shelves in boxes: a scenario that wasn't encountered early on due to shortages meaning they didn't stay on shelves
@@Ashley-lm4nv It became common from the 3rd to 9th Gen intel CPU chips - They stopped soldering the Heat Spreader to the silicon, instead using a cheaper thermal paste
This led to many enthusiasts "Delidding" their CPU's to either use a high performance thermal paste or Liquid metal - Generally resulting in a temp drop of between 7 to 12 degrees when compared to stock
@@johndoh5182 because its a made up issue
I have mine vertical since launch I do however have fans underneath and on the back always on. Never had an issue.
Good to know. I’ll proceed to keep my PS5 vertical
PC's have been running vertically for decades with LM between the cpu die and heatspreader and when the two are close together this will result in zero issues. It just stays where it is.
maybe becuase 95% of pc arent using liquid metal but thermal paste which is a higher viscosity
People are missing the cause
When the PC or Console is power cycled the heat will wick the LM back up due to capillary action
This happens when a PC with LM under the IHS is not used for multiple months
Its happening to PS5's that have spent several months stood vertically on shop shelves
Sometimes I wonder if I treat my electronics better than most because I've never had anything clogged with hair or dust before and can't fathom it being so. I don't even have to clean them that often at all.
@@Ansem_SOD13 Tell me about it. I'm in the middle of moving to a new apartment and the owner is giving me a really good deal if I help clean it up. These previous tenants should be committed. They took the fridge door off and had it cranked up to max for who knows how long, never vacuumed or dusted once, or washed their hands because there were handprints everywhere. They locked their dog in the bathroom while they left so the door was chewed to hell. I don't understand it.

Lol same. I hoover 2 or 3 times a day and dust every one or two days. So maybe I'm a freak but this is conducive to keeping clean consoles!
Surely if it fails because of this then Sony would have to repair or replace whether in warranty or not. They provide a stand to place it vertically.
Warranties are illegal to void in America should the damages not be directly caused by the buyers. Even if you open the console up and remove the sticker, it is still against the law to void said warranty should the damage not be caused by the buyer directly
@@BigRhenoIf you are messing about with using liquid metal on the chip then I can assure you no Court is going to uphold any warranty. You have definitely invalidated it.
You have interfered with the PS5 to a level which is likely to cause damage and such interference is unnecessary: if it overheats then the product is clearly faulty and you should exercise your right under the warranty to have it fixed or replaced. You really shouldn't be messing about with liquid metal on the packaging of the die.
I heard about discs getting scratched up back when the ps2 came out when it was set vertical. I still never trust my consoles sitting vertical.

Wouldn't it only leak/move only when fully opened up? Removing both panels that are keeping it trapped in, only allows oxidation to form pooling. Probably not a good idea to fully open up the ps5 unless you're replacing the liquid metal.
logically speaking, it's liquid. you know how liquid behaves like
This is how I understand it. As long as there is proper pressure on the cooler the LM will be evenly spread. It’s only when you take the cooler off that it can start to move from once side to the other. It isn’t going anywhere no matter what position it is in if it’s together!
@@masterchiefsandok that's true, just hope somebody doesn't drop the ps5 😁
@@asutora.5363 have you ever seen a condensation covered flat bottom smooth cup react to a flat smooth table top? Two high gloss surfaces with liquid between them form a bond. That’s exactly why GPUs/cpus are polished to such an insanely smooth surface as well as the heat sink connection point.
@asutora. thats really the only reason i lay it horizontal. Rather that then it falling over.
But the surface tension between the die and the cooler wouldn't let the liquid metal move. 🤔
i’ve had my ps5 for three years now and i’ve always had it standing up no problems 😐
I clean mine and son's once every 6 months. I Got are 1200s and first PS5s in October 2022 and Just cleaned them. With the Dbrand plates the PS5 didn't get that dirty due to filters. Its awesome. Get filter no matter how you run or what you put on it. We both keep it Horizontal.. Take care of your stuff. Its an old school method of how to make your stuff last longer.
Where do I get the filters from?
its true but if your ps5 is unrepaired (hasnt broken yet) vertical is okay, if yours has just been repaired keep it horizontally, also keep cleaning dust and hair on them frequently or one time in the span of 6 month as dust and hair build up quickly
I do that every day or every 3 days tbh
It's also just more safe to keep it horizontal. You could accidently tip it over, and make it fall in vertical pose
I had my PS5 for less than a week, and MY CAT... had caught the controller charging wire and yanked it TOWARDS THE TV... THAT was the ONLY thing that saved it from falling three feet, and crashing onto a tile floor. It WILL STAAAAYYYY horizontal from now on, with a KICK-A$$ cooling fan and micro-sized grill covers for every orifice on it 😉👍
That's why I have a extra cooler mounting station with controller charger and usb ports
Bigger than the original stand and my ps5 doesn't even blow out warm air when running AAA games for 15 hours
that doesn't keep into account that the heatsink would keep pressure on the liquid metal, not allowing it to pool up on the bottom.
These people aren't the brightest

I have an idea, what if you put regular thermal paste on the edges of the APU and liquid metal on the center, to hold the liquid metal in place? (make like a really thin square line of it to act like a pool) I don't think it would leak past the regular thermal paste (a good ol cheap glueey kind of thermal paste, non conductive stuff), it would provide a good seal without sacrificing thermals because its on the edges, I dont know if they would mix, liquify the paste and leak anyways, but I would give it a try if I had a ps5. Its like making a seal out of liquid seal like we do on cars and stuff

What if you were to switch out the liquid metal for normal thermal paste would it be alright?
the heatsink pressed against the CPU so the thermal compound will have far less room to move.
With the heatsink attached it won’t move due to capillary force

The heat sink on top of the cpu makes capillary action which keeps the Liquid Metal on top of your cpu.
It shouldn’t matter when the heat sink is installed. For disassembly keep it horizontal for sure, but when it’s put together, it’s fine either way

Liquid metal is just as likely to move both vertically and horizontally, and on top of that, PS5 insurance covers liquid metal damage.
Doesn’t move unless it’s the heatsink removed , the heatsink bolted keeps the metals from escaping & the liquid
I’ve seen on other channels of people getting PS5’s sent to them from overheating is from them being stored vertically. He isn’t the first tech giving this tip.
Once the heat sink is installed if the space is %100 occupied by the liquid it is impossible for it to pool anywhere . Only if there is air due to insufficient liquid is it possible . Looking at the volume of liquid my guess is that pooling will not occur .

That's because he knows there isn't an issue 💀
My ps5 used to turn off randomly during online gaming sessions. I watched your video where you cleaned the heatsink vents and I followed the same steps. My ps5 hasn’t shut down on its own ever since!
I would recommend doing a base clean (taking off the plates, cleaning the filters and dust catchers) every 1-2 months and a deep clean (take off and clean the fan and heatsink +all of the above) at least once a year

i feel like the liwuid metal wouldnt pool if it was attached on both sides cause of surface tension, am i wrong?
I've had zero issues so far keeping my favourite pastime horizontal too.
do this, this video is fake. enjoy your ps5.
As dust collects on horizontal surfaces it seems that keeping the ps5 in horizontal position makes sense. There aren't exposed openings or vents in the horizontal position, the wings completely cover the surface. If it's vertical dust will settle in the vents/openings.
When i put my PS3 vertical back in the day, it a MELTED 2 disks that were just fine running before. Put horizontal again and fixed.
Always had it vertical for visual purposes, with sea of thieves I started noticing some leds flickering at the bottom of my tv, I remember this liquid metal issue so I changed it to horizontal, or maybe its just my tv that's a little old
The liquid metal isn't gonna move easily when the heatsink has the apu tightly pressing against it.
Hey so as someone that has had this problem twice, use horizontal. The heatsink was pretty well caked because i was living in a dusty environment for a while and the heatsink just gobbled that stuff up and lead to random power off issues
I like mine diagonally, suits my rooms flow.
I've had my ps4 since it came out and its never over heated
Thx❤
hey im just curious, but how much would the liquid metal run down when the heatsink is on? you gave a demonstration with the heatsink off, so im wondering how bad it is over time when compressed?
I’ve had my PC for 8 or so years at this point swapping out parts occasionally and never “cleaned” it one single time. Absolutely minimal dust buildup inside and still runs no problems and NEVER has gotten close to overheating
Would the viscosity of liquid metal keep it in place when the heat sync is in place?
My ps5 had over heating issues a year and some change in, no over heating message it would just turn off and wouldnt even turn back on unless you let it cool down or unplug the powercord. It needed a super deep cleaning, i have a alot of pets and living in the desert does not help as well 😂,But i went ahead and cleaned everything out even also re did the thermal paste and good as new no issues. I also had it vertical at the time i put horizontal after the cleaning and noticed better air flow.

I got mine 2 days after it came out and it sat vertical for about 2 years until I heard about this issue and now it’s horizontal. It was very dusty when I went to clean it a few months back.
Had mine vertical since the start. Then a year or so later it started the shutting off randomly crap. Wasn't very much dust at all when I opened it up. Put it horizontal and it's been fine since.
the pressure of the heatsink shouldn't block the Liquid Metal from spilling down?
I’ve had it vertical since I first bought it, and had absolutely no issues at all.
i love your content bro
I had my PS5 vertical for about a year and some change (basically from when I first got it) and after a while it started randomly shutting off only when I would play specifically PS5 games and I couldn’t for the life of me figure it out, I feel like I tried everything I could before I finally took the whole thing apart and cleaned it fully and turned it horizontal and that was about 6 months or more ago and I haven’t had any problems since.
I feel like some decent thermal paste would've been enough. Were they going for longevity?
I've got cats who would love to have a new spot to lay. Gonna keep it standing up but good to know.
