  • The humble arcade stick has gone unchanged for decades...but is that about to change? Paradise Arcade sent me the "Magenta", an analog stick you CUSTOMIZE to match your style of gaming! They provided the stick but gave no further instructions and as always, all opinions are my own :)

    The "stick rotation" is probably intended for if you can only mount in one direction inside the stick due to existing wiring/mounting brackets or if you accidentally installed the stick upside-down or sideways

      Sanwa actually makes a stick with silent switches. I hated it, ESPECIALLY since I tend to play within the gate. I'm still keeping it as a backup or if my brother wants a stick since he tends to play against the restrictor plate, but I'm absolutely going to change to a Seimitsu.

    you could have tried it in some matches, woulda been interesting. i feel the best use for this is to decrease sensitivity of upward directions, accidental jumps can get you killed and i feel a lot of sticks have a problem when springing back to neutral and getting undesired jumps. i cant imagine having maximum sensitivity and trying to handle it like a normal stick.

    • @constancies
      @constancies 5 лет назад +1

      If I had to pick a culprit for frustration, for me it would be Super Smash Bros, as it is way, way too forgiving in my opinion. Lesser skilled players roll constantly, and I always have trouble punishing them. But what really grinds my gears is the end lag of some very strong attacks; it’s very short, so you could go for the punish, and then your opponent will just ROLL OUT OF THE WAY and hit you instead.

    It would be great for practicing and learning how to use a stick to begin with. I really have problems with the QCFs or QCBs; and the shoryuken motion. i.e: I play UMK3 a lot with Ermac and the Telekinesis is a backward shoryuken motion + HK, and I always wind up jumping backwards. So I think this is great product for learning and it would definitely bring me back to playing with the stick, but also allows for customization: adapting the stick to your play and not the other way around.

So far I still prefer the traditional lever, keep it simple. Sanwa's silent lever and the Link detachable draft are very good parts to upgrade your stick.
    I have 2 questions:
    1. Is the golden paint on your buttons easy to peel?

      Unlike most analog controls this is a hall effect system that does a calibration routine everytime the stick is turned on, so the drift should be non-existent.

    I'm looking to build an arcade cabinet for the switch similar to nintendrew but maybe for up to 4 players. I'd like to create a more genuine experience by building a housing for sticks instead of buying something like 4 hori mini wired fight sticks. I'm looking for joysticks with 360 degree/analog control, mainly for smash Bros ultimate but also for camera rotation in other games. Do you think this stick would make for a good option? I'm also looking at the Ultrastik 360 as an option.

      This isn’t an analog controller. Although the software can show you the analog input, it’s only for customising the active zones and dead zones. The output is digital as far as I’m aware. You might be intetested in the “crossup” by hitboxarcade. It has a true analogue based stick I think

    18:50 - Dear Nihongu, please be more careful with what you say, as your videos get thousands of views.
    Giant actuators and hitboxes are tournament legal, and both of those have instant transation from one direction to another.
    The reason why Humehara's stickless stick was disqualified, was due to it having 2 buttons for left and right AND for NOT using a board with SODC. This was, if he was to press 2 directions, the last would be registred over the first, instead of going to neutral.
    Were the judges right? Idk. Pads do that already, having the analog stick and the d-pad on it.

    • @KeshavKrishnan
      @KeshavKrishnan 5 лет назад +1

      It did have SOCD, just a different kind of SOCD cleaning called last wins. The extra left and right buttons are basically available on pad tho yeah. Sfv handles two input directions as forward wins, the gafro box setting daigi uses is last input wins. No SOCD would result in forward wins in sfv

    Thanks as always for the video Nihongo, I think the only reason this hasn't yet been banned is because much like Combo Breaker and Capcom were with the Gafro box, T.O.s don't know about it yet. It's not as if these companies send their products to T.O.s the way they do RUclipsrs after all. I see this being banned quickly now that it's existence is known, though happily the $99 add on price is so steep most won't bother which is why I also don't see it being integrated into sticks either, who wants to raise the price of their stick by that much? It may be hard to check every stick at a tournament but it's much simpler to check all the sticks for the top 32, and easily the top 16, I can at the very least see a future where top 8 checks at the minimum are standard and we end up having our first few DQ's from a tournament for exploits.

    • @armi0024
      @armi0024 5 лет назад +1

      Mike, great point that these types of devices should be discussed openly with TO's. The stick was shown to the TO's prior to launch and discussed with them to make sure that it did not violate their expectations. We were VERY careful to make sure that this did not cause any issues. Mr. Wiz actually was the first paid install of a stick. I agree 99 is quite a bit for a single stick, but in offering 4 different profiles to make it suited for different games and with the amount of customization, as well as the ability to see your moves as you make them, this offers a significant advantage over optical or even silent sticks which are not much cheaper.

    • @mikejonesnoreally
      @mikejonesnoreally 5 лет назад

      If you don't mind the question, nothing is hack proof, but how "hack resistant" is it? Also, do you not feel, at least for Street Fighter that Arcade Sticks are not already designed as they were intended to be used with the game? You are aware that Zangief does not actually have to perform a 360 for a Spinning Pile Driver right? Do you also know that there are already input shortcuts and option selects for many moves in many games and how this could affect that? If this were a training tool (as innocent Nihongo used it) then that would be different, a diagnostic tool like that would be a huge boon for many of us who puzzle over what we do that causes a drop, particularly if it were programed with certain timings and examples, that could be huge, but as is, it looks like a huge Min/Max device that will give an edge to those who can afford it at best and be simply exploited to degrees that would impress our space program at worst.

    • @armi0024
      @armi0024 5 лет назад

      @@mikejonesnoreally I don't mind the questions at all. There is more security built into this than any of the SOCD cleaners, brook fighting boards etc. In regards to the games, games are not designed for a specific stick, sticks on the market currently change direction proportions, sensitivity, even accent a direction (look at the Helpme levers). The Magenta makes these modifications easier to do. There are no "shortcuts" that are created by this stick, unlike illegal modifications, this does not create a macro type situation. We are not going to pretend that this is not going to help improve execution in part, but as a terrible player myself, I can tell you, I am not winning tournaments by simply using the stick. However, as a training, coaching, and diagnostic tool, there are tones of applications. As a biomechanics researcher, I've already noticed some really interesting trends when different levels of players use the stick. As far as who can afford it? We retheme sticks for 50-70 dollars, ad LEDs for 50-120, and buy silent joysticks for 50-80, so to me, and the 100's who have already purchased it, the price is high but not out of line with the capability. And with the current trend in the "space program" I think this would be more for spaceex than Nasa. :)

      I agree with a lot of fair minded pros, if we're to take competition seriously there needs to be standardization. As for this stick, I can already see a bunch of exploits and worse, since it's tied to/controlled by/set with the program, (however you want to say that) it could be easily exploited. It favors some control types even without hacks. Zangief mains and "charge" character's could easily exploit this as is. If a T.O. hasn't banned this already, it's simply because they don't *know* about it just like combo breaker didn't know about Gafro until Daigo showed them. Once they know about it most T.O.s will just ban it in the interest of fairness. I.E. The game wasn't designed with this level of control, and more importantly, control over inputs in mind.

    • @armi0024
      @armi0024 5 лет назад

      @@mikejonesnoreally as stated above, TO's were fully aware before launch and we went through it with them in excruciating detail, right down to making the chips write once so there is no way to redo the firmware for an unfair advantage. The magenta is a very elaborate and easy to to incorporate a number of mods, and tweak those mods that people have been doing for years. Oversize actuators, different micros, leafs on micros, bending the leafs on micros, etc. The issue here is that it allows this to be done easily while observing the result immeadiately, making this level of optimization possible for the average user and as was pointed out in the video, easier to observe the motions and make corrections to your own play.
      But the bottom line is that the TO's are aware of this and have made the decision, knowing what it is and can do that this is legal.

    • @mikejonesnoreally
      @mikejonesnoreally 5 лет назад

      I don't feel that this is the "bottom line" at all. It feels a lot more like the "last straw." In a way, that's good. At least now it will force a conversation that we should have revisited when the hitbox was originally released or it was discovered that players were able to exploit using pad/stick simultaneously. We need to address SODC cleaners as well as how much sensitivity should be allowed, as well as if and to what degree that can be programmed into the software to make it a non-issue or "Developer bats last" type of bottom line if you prefer, since you feel it's such a settled issue. Particularly in the CPT where Street Fighter is the one game that *was* designed with a particular and non-console specific control scheme in mind: the one used in arcades and that started fighting games and the FGC in general.

    • @armi0024
      @armi0024 5 лет назад

      @@mikejonesnoreally my point was that a few comments stated TO's were not aware of this particular stick which we made sure they were. However you do bring up a good point of other devices. Most SOCD cleaners do not have a programmed sensitivity, they are simply logical circuits that don't allow two inputs at once, a combination of and/or gates. The ones that get people in trouble are the programmable once and yes these can have last input (which is like a macro) or sensitivity levels set. At the end of the day, if you spend hours bending leafs, adding paper to micros switches, changing microswtich brands, adjusting the actuator, etc you can modify a JLF to react in a similar way to the programmed response of the Magenta, it's just with the Magenta you save hours of time and you cage instant feedback allowing you to adjust more accurately. To make this illegal as presented would mean you would have to make sure all players used stock joysticks, and then the argument or discussion swings to, which stock joystick, just JLF, would you allows opticals, silents, etc.
      The concerns your bring up about the stick, are ones we had, and appreciate your thoughts.
