Tony's mother is one of the reasons this show transcended into GOAT status. Nancy Marchand is amazing as Livia Soprano. We love to hate her, and her comedic timing is pure gold.
To this day, ex mob capo (he advertises that he's an "ex boss," which he was not... He was a captain, big difference but I digress), Michael Franzese, is convinced that they based Livia off of his own mother, from the FBI tapes they had on her while tapping the house of his father who was the Colombo underboss... It frightened him how close Livia was to his own mother... Which means a real life Livia existed
I liked her on “Lou Grant” way back then
I don't know what you're talking about!
Livia is literally like my Mother its hard when you love someone so hateful and bitter the characters in this show are underrated aside from the mobster stuff its something i keep coming back too! my son is like AJ and i see alot of what i see in Tony in me and what i see in AJ in him shows how good the writing is in this show i can literally relate to things like i do. My daughhter is very much like Medo too come to think about it.
@@mmsizzlak so what? She is pretty popular stereotype of italian women.
Great Goodfellas references in this one. Chris shooting the guy in the foot like Spider. And, especially Richard condemning the movie to Jennifer when Lorraine Bracco was a major character in the film.
It happens 🤣
Was gonna say this. Hope they read your comment and mention it next episode
And Christopher was Spider in "Goodfellas." 🤣
Fellaception
...and Chris played Spider.
"Janice is a little snot!"
Oh just you wait! Oh just you wait! 🤣🤣🤣💀💀
you think you hate livia...wait till you meet janice. lol
Agreed, the character is horrible but the actress is amazing. I still can't believe they found so many actors that are playing the worst people you can imagine that you are glad to see show up on screen.
lol yeah I fell out at that, whoo baby she's a piece of work.
@@RussellCHall The Sopranos really is a masterclass in casting and acting.
Love them or hate them but every character is great and so well-written.
One of the best moments in episode 8 was cut here- when they're digging up Emil and Georgie says "Is that him?" to which Christopher replies "It'd be some fucking coincidence if it wasn't, wouldn't it?"
You guys pointed out some things about these early episodes that I’ve never picked up on before. And I’ve watched this series from when it first aired. You are always so deep and have a very good analysis on what is going on. This show is very psychological from the beginning to end and it’s always fun to hear different takes on this show. Also fun to note that Michael Imperioli played Spider in Goodfellas who got shot in the foot by Joe Pesci. Now he shoots the kid in the foot in a Sopranos episode. Lol.
I thought the same thing. It's always great to see different perspectives on shows.
Small tidbit from this episode, one of the kids that chase young Tony was Michael B Jordan.
Yep, and you'll also note that one of the characters in the store actually comes back later as a totally different character. Hopefully that wasn't a spoiler.
@@thepeopleschamp9076 Ah, I was wondering what he was doing in that scene.
I want to really encourage you guys that releasing these quickly is the right thing to do. The Sopranos is just the best show ever made, and reliving it vicariously through you brings me such pleasure and joy. Thank you so much for these videos and please feel free to upload as many and as quickly as you want.
Love that you guys are cranking these out and enjoying them so much, always enjoy seeing it pop up on my feed.
Did you notice another shout out to Goodfellas? Christopher who was Spider in Goodfellas the one that got shot in the foot by Tommy (Joe Pesci). Christopher shooting the guy in the bakery in the foot was a nod to the movie.
...and the best part is when Christopher, after shooting him, tells him....
"It happens"
(like it happened to me in another movie)
Big credit to Nancy Marchand playing Livia Soprano. It takes a great actress to credibly play a character that everyone hates. She really played it so well. Your reactions are always interesting and very detailed. Great work.
They didn’t notice the connection to Goodfellas lol
Christopher played Spider that got shot in the foot by Tommy (Pesci).
Christopher said about getting shot in the foot “It happens” 🤣😂
Genius
Been waiting for this moment...
Gotta give the Dynamic Duo a break. They watch a lot of movies, and probably don’t recognize Michael Imperioli 10-11 years older than he was in Goodfellas. Never mind recognize Dominic Chianese from his Johnny Olla role in II.
The little bonding scene at the end of episode 7 reminded me that after it passed it came out during the filming of the show James Gandolfini was going out of his way to make sure his TV children were being taken care of. Sounded like he was a genuinely good guy.
Also yes, the first taste of Janice. Get ready for that train wreck.
I was thinking I can’t wait til they meet her now.
When The Sopranos really hit it big and became a TV critical and ratings darling. James Gandolfini got a huge raise. So he formed a charity so he could share it with his co-stars who didn't get raises/didn't have the leverage to ask for more money.
I cannot remember anyone having a bad word to say about him.
I checked y’all’s channel earlier today thinking “dang I really wanna watch more of their sopranos reactions”
Thank y’all for throwing these out there
Been watching for over a year now and just wanted to leave my first comment and say I love y’alls reactions!!! Excited to see you tackle my absolute favorite show
What’s great about this show is that it’s so much deeper than one initially thinks. It’s not just a show about a bunch of goodfellas. And you have a protagonist that you actually root for, despite the fact that he does some really horrible things. Kinda like Norman Bates in Psycho.
The scene where Tony's nephew/cousin Christopher Moltisanti shoots the pastry store clerk in the foot has a double significance. Michael Imperioli, the actor who plays Christopher, was in "Goodfellas" as the bartender who Joe Pesci shoots in the foot for not bringing him a drink.
Considering what happen next the clerk was lucky😰
"You shot me in the foot!"
"It happens."
LOL
You will see more of the difference in Tony way of dealing with Anthony and Meadow. No matter the ups and downs Tony goes through with his kids you will see through out the series, Meadow is his heart.
I love that we already got new reactions. I always enjoy the talk afterwards. ✌️❤️
Are there any other kids born in the late 80's-early 90's that actually remember getting paddled in school? Your parent(s) signed a note allowing it. When you got in trouble, you'd go to the principal's office, he'd have a nurse there to watch, he'd strike you 2 times and you'd go back to class with a sore butt. No letters, no parents called, nothing. Acting up in gym class was a guaranteed paddling. I can even remember an incident where the juice boxes served at lunch smelled like alcohol because they'd sat so long. These episodes take me back.
First season of The Sopranos already feels like something from another era.
I know Chris is held dear by a lot of fans, but Sam's reaction to his character is incredibly sane.
I've watched the series over 50 times - it's really enjoyable to see your reactions to the show, and to know what you have in store for you.
damn, that's alot. you can probably just play the entire show in your head by now.
Shoutout from BENSONHURST- BROOKLYN, NEW YORK!! 🙌🏼🇮🇹🇺🇸
Shoutout from Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn!
I think what’s great about this show is that everyone when asked “what’s it about?” would say “the mafia”. While that’s true, it’s really about life, family, relationships, existence, etc…but uses the mafia to as a vehicle to explore those themes. It’s just fantastic. The “mafia” angle is great b/c it provides a visceral stimulus….the fights, the murders, the crimes…stuff that is interesting but a very small, closed off world that most ppl don’t experience or know & have a fascination with but then it allows the show to work through all those themes of life that we all deal with.
Best show ever.
18:40 Its a common myth, its not exactly that your beard grows after you die, what happens is that your skin start to decay so your hair pop up and feels like it grows, same with the nails
Episode 7 is the most important for Anthony Jr. His character is forever cemented
Greatest show ever, i could rewatch it endlessly. Really enjoy your reactions, keep up the great work. 👍
@@christopherking4932 Wire is my 2nd favorite, the realism of that show is brilliant. i like the sopranos a little more for the comedy.
I envy you getting to watch The Sopranos for the first time. You're gonna love it!
David Chase was greatly inspired by David Lynch (Mulholland Drive) when making The Sopranos .and it shows. The series is definitely not afraid to go full blown surrealism. One of the many great things that separates the show from being just another crime drama.
Really? Never heard of that. Makes sense, these are two masterminds. I remember Chase praising Twin Peaks The Return when it aired as well.
1:30 very subtle joke most people miss. When Tony first met Mikey in episode 1 he asks him "How's the boy?" A set up for the punchline "The boy you are sleeping with."
He tries to use the same joke on Christopher but instead of asking "what boy?" Christopher tells him all the problems he's having.
yes it is a strong first season! everyone has their favorite season and mine is the last but the incredible thing is that it only gets better from here! i know people say that about lots of shows but with the insight and emotional sensitivity y'all show you're going to get so much out of what's coming.
also: the creator of the show david chase has said pretty straightforwardly that Livia is based on his own mother. i feel so bad for him.
Don’t know if you’ll find this interesting but one of AJ’s friends in the school is actually a young lady gaga lol such a random fact
I've seen this series several time and am just loving experiencing it again with your commentary & discussion so much. Related to these two episodes, that Bakery Customer actor returns again as a bigger character Vito Spatafore, I like to pretend this Gino is a relation of Vito. Also they recently made a prequel movie 'The Many Saints of Newark' that features younger characters too, that you may have fun watching when you complete this series. 🙂
Thanks for the great reaction and excellent discussion! I love your deep dives into this amazing show...and it's only S1. So much more to come, I can't wait for the rest of the episodes! 👍
14:14 Crazy how that was almost Tony on that news report
15:07 Less than 5,000 "members", meaning only counting made men. You're not officially "in the mob" if you're not made but most of the crews and soldiers aren't made.
The NRA or PETA probably have millions of members, but only a few thousand really active involved members - that wouldn't be the case for the Mafia. Their membership counts for a lot.
the therapist the Melfi family sees is famed director/producer Peter Bogdanovich
He played Melfis therapist starting in Season 3, episode 2. That was a different guy they saw.
"Georgie comes into the club, with vomit all over him, so I ask him, what the fuck?"
"Janice is a little snot!" That's an understatement. She becomes a major character in the present timeframe in a later season. IIRC we only see Tony's younger sister as an adult in one episode.
There are several characters with the nickname "Pussy" (such as Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero). This refers to them being a B & E specialist when they were younger (a "cat burglar").
"Bought" lol Chris definitely didn't buy the computer. It "fell off a truck".
It only gets better.
When Richard mentioned Goodfellas I’m surprised the universe didn’t melt because Melfi was Karen in that movie
16:10 This is a fun nod to Goodfellas, in which Michael Imperioli (as Spider) gets shot in the foot by Joe Pesci for serving him too slowly. Here Imperioli (As Christopher) shoots the donut clerk in the foot and tells him "It happens".
There are so many great characters over the life of the show.
My favorite is Paulie, such a true eccentric and provides comic relief throughout the show.
Imperoli is such a big part of the show
When you say Jennifer I get confused for a second. She's Dr. Melfi to me.
Tony's relationship with Artie Bucco is a direct projection of Tony's father's anger for never running the "supper club" Or his mother's anger for shooting the idea down.
I know this isn’t a patreon poll but two movies I’d love to see reacted to are That Thing You Do! (1996). It’s just a great, honest movie written by Tom Hanks. It’s one of my favorites. Then Judge Dredd (1995). A lot of people dislike this movie for being inaccurate to the comics but it’s still good, cheesy fun. Love the content!
One of my favorite things about you guys is seeing how yas light up when you figure shit out. On season 1 Samantha said the therapist looked familiar. Scrolled through some of the comments but didnt see anyone point out she was Henrys wife from Goodfellas, Christopher was also spider in that movie. I scrolled thru some of the comments but didn't see anyone point it out.
Dr. Elliot Kupferberg is later played by Peter Bogdonavich, better known as a director of movies like The Last Picture Show, its sequel, Texasville, and The Paper Moon.
Godfather 3 is where you remember the telephone conversation from when he tries to suck up to Micheal with that stupid award.
You two are great. Love watching you watch this show. Season 2 is the single greatest season of tv ever, imo. Keep it up!
Can’t wait for the next episodes!! Some awesome stuff is coming
13:44 “I hope he gets to make a movie at some point” …. 🤭🤭
The raid thing, I think it´s the difference between a raid to a nobody and a raid to a connected, wealthy family. There is always a double standard.
Also, if they DON'T find evidence of crime, then a heavy-handed approach would blow back on them as Tony might well sue just to show them he isn't to be pushed around. The feds aren't going to give him the opportunity to embarass them.
16:15 memories fromGoodfellas lol😂😂😂😂😂😂
I think having Tony's Mum character works perfectly, as she is the only person that can put a dent in the tough guy image of Tony, as he said in episode 8, "She would have been the real gangster."
RE Livia Soprano's creating chaos in the relationships amongst the people around her:
Look up the clinical definitions of "Narcissistic Personality Disorder" and Malignant Narcissism"
and as for Tony, look up "Antisocial Personality Disorder"
Love your reaction to the Sopranos. I do like Chris though. He's a mess but he's so entertaining. I have a feeling Samantha is really going to hate Chris even more as the season go on. I am looking forward to that. lol.
I find Christopher entertaining too especially Season 1.
The Sopranos was the best show on television at that time .
It is a somewhat common misconception that hair and nails continue to grow after death. This is due to the fact that at a certain point during decomposition, the skin will have shrunk and receded which reveals more hair and nail that was previously under the skin at the time of death.
My grandfather told me about hair growing at my great uncle's funeral.
i forgot who it was that mentioned this but someone said in the scene where Dr. Melfi was charging Tony for the unattended session was almost a parallel and quite ironic due to numerous amounts of times Tony ends up shaking other people down who owe him money lol.
It's interesting how Christopher shot the bakery clerk in the foot when in Goodfellas Christopher played the character Spider, who was serving drinks to Joe Pesci, who shot him in the foot in the beginning.
Man, there's something very enjoyable about their evaluations of characters and suspicions about how things will go. 😄👍
"Janice is a little snot."
Oh boy... 😄
"You bitch!"
😄
Samatha's evaluation of Christopher is interesting. I've always gotten the feeling that most new fans of the show... not necessarily like him, but have hopes for him, I guess. But Samantha seems like she's ready to have him whacked already. 😄
The claim that Antonio Meucci is the true investor of the telephone was in The Godfather Part 3.
“I hope he gets to make a movie at some point.” 👀
Lol at 'Goodfellas' ref, the shrink was the wife.
OMG LOL AT TBR Saying “You B**tch” lol
You can't possibly develop a hatred for anyone in this show yet, yet. This show is so fucking good.
This is around the time when James Gandolfini changed his Italian accent to sound a little bit more "goombah"😂
funny thing is Christopher shoots the bakery clerk in the foot because he was disrespectful, in Goodfellas (1990) Spider was shot in the foot for the same reason more or less! when he walks out he says "it happens", likely as an inside joke...
also, a nice cameo of Mr. Vito Spatafore!
You missed the call back to Goodfellas- Christopher shooting the guy in the foot...
Maturing is realizing Livia is the funniest character on this show.
"He's talking about his mother..."
Not everything is about you!
ME: WELL, it kind of IS a LOT all about his mother lol. She's NOT wrong.
It's hilarious to hear and see your guys reactions. His reaction to Livia and how he just cant stand her cracks me up I felt the same way when I first watched like UGH you are causing me so much internal distress I can only guess why Tony is the way he is. Really excited to see the rest of the series!
Richard: "The Godfath"er, Goodfellas.." Jason: "Both good movies. Did you ever notice how the actress who played Henry's wife looks just like Mom? I wonder whatever happened to the actor who played the guy who Joe Pesci shot in the foot in Goodfellas? He'll probably never play a gangster who shoots somebody in the foot."
Keep the Sopranos reactions coming! Game of Thrones was the biggest show of the 2010’s, The Sopranos was the biggest show of the 2000’s
Love how they ended that episode with Frank Sinatra from Cake playing, such a great song
F.B.I. Agent Harris becomes a regular at Satriale's Pork Store. Mr. Satriale, the namesake, appears in the next flashback episode.
Paulie Walnuts is hilarious. Yeh and nothing did so what. 😂
It's so sad that we lost Tony Sirico this year. Pauli was a great character. So we've lost 2 now.
Chris shooting the guy in the foot was a nod to Goodfellas when he gets shot in the foot.
Yep, for us an FBI search warrant would be a big deal, for Tony and Carmella it’s a Tuesday.
Hey! Paulie stole the sfogliatelle.
You need to check out some Wes Anderson like The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Moonrise Kingdom, and The Grand Budapest Hotel - you'd love them if you haven't seen them already
and Rushmoore
Loving your reactions so far, and Chris only gets worse. 🤣 LOL
The show really starts in season 2. Season 1 isn't _bad_ but it's not up to par with the rest of the show.
It seems like you guys are getting hooked and are gonna end up watching more often then you initially thought. It only gets better
Part of Tony's looking out for Christopher is that after Tony's father, Giovanni "Johnny Boy" Soprano died, Christopher's father Richard "Dickie" Moltisanti, good friend of Johnny Soprano, took care of Tony as if he was a blood nephew, more so than Corrado Jr. did.
A racket for whom?! SHUT IT DOWN!
This was a really cool show although the final episode has its controversy. Also wait until the episode where Paulie and Christopher get lost in the woods, it's hilarious.
15:05 It would have been funny if Dr Melfi said "Yeah, I was in that one"
Or, "never saw it."
Remember Goodfellas?
Michael Imperioli (Christopher) played Spider in Goodfellas, the kid who was shot by Tommy over drinks. He shot the pastry guy’s foot in Episode 8.
Green Groves is a retirement community and it's more like a hotel at Captain Teebs!
Analyze This, with Robert DeNiro and Billy Crystal.
I am SO stoked for you guys and really enjoying watching this with you both. Thanks so much. The cinematography just gets better and better.. colors for meanings. .. the whole shebang.. great stuff.. funny too.
In my opinion this show doesn't really progress in terms of storylines. The progression comes in the form of the individual stories of each main character. The plot is fine but the focus is on the character development, particularly Tony.
