I've worked in the professional home control/ home theater-install industry. It's fascinating to see the progression of the consumer tech industry closing the gap on the pros. I just started HomeKit'ing my own home. The advent of Thread (and soon Matter) will go a long way towards bomb-proofing connectivity with the home between devices. Integration/ compatibility between the myriad customer devices is the #1 most challenging task on jobs and leveraging the ubiquity of Apple/ Google/ Amazon products is the key to bringing costs down and product diversity up.
I highly recommend AppleTV for those in the Apple environment. I’ve upgraded to the 4K version. It’s the only device/input used on my tv. Have been incredibly impressed with using dual OG HomePods as speakers. So much so…I dropped my Pioneer Elite AV receiver and Definitive Tech speakers. The Apple TV does an amazing job at video processing and allows you to match frame rates and dynamic range.
Same here, although I have not had good experiences with the match frame rate and dynamic range. One of the two was causing some severe audio delay issues with my OG HomePods used as home theatre speakers with my 2nd gen 4K Apple TV.
We bought one in '20, and have been exceptionally happy with it. My wife was initially resistant to jumping head first into the i-ecosystem, but a year later now, we're happy with them mostly.
That game sounds perfect for my family game night! I'm loving my Apple TV. I do wish they would come out with some more Apple Arcade games that are meant to be played on the Apple TV. They also need an official gamepad that pairs as easy as headphones.
Thanks for the video! I'd love to find a stereo receiver that can switch inputs over HomeKit. Is there one you could recommend that won't break the bank?
I've been an Nvidia Shield user for years. I switched to the Apple TV 4K about 2 weeks ago and I'm so glad I did. I love it. It's so clean, snappy, no ads on my screen, no clutter. Love it!
There's the potential they will disconnect, and also thinking about it from a new consumer's perspective, there are a lot of great audio options around the cost of two full size HomePods. When I tried it in my basement I was pleased with the sound quality but I wasn't blown away.
Homepods suck as speakers for your TV. I am using 5,2.4 setups with towers as my mains with the exception of the bedroom where I am using bookshelves all around.
Stereo pair OG Homepods are fantastic and I can't recommend it enough. I have had no issues whatsoever. Having said that, I also know that my time is limited until I get the popping sound of death and my time is done. However, by that time hopefully Apple have created the replacement larger product with even better sound and functionality. Lossless/Spatial atmos audio sounds pretty good all things considered and there's something about talking to your TV turning it on/off or opening apps or playing music. My biggest reason in the beginning for doing this was Samsung's terrible TV software not holding the optical audio output for a sound bar and kept reverting back to TV sound. Doing this, I just disabled sound completely on the TV and used OG Homepods.
Yep - I don’t even have the OG HomePods (minis only), and yet Samsung pushed me over the edge to just use my Minis as the audio output for my Samsung TV. I may not be getting the highest quality, but the fact that I couldn’t keep two Samsung products to play nice (TV & Samsung sound bar) made it worth it for me to just unplug the sound bar. They used to work together OK, but it was just stupid that I had to keep resetting /re-joining the audio due to Samsung’s buggy software. I wish Apple hadn’t discontinued the OG HomePods, but I’ll take reliability and simplicity over a slightly better sound.
7:39 this is something I would have agreed with you on up until the release of the 2nd gen 4K TV and with a tvOS update that enables ARC functionality for connected HomePods. Especially with the addition of the HomePod mini being able to be used as a primary Apple TV speaker, being able to use HomePods as your TV’s main sound output for other devices connected to your TV was a game changer for me. I think at $200 a stereo pair of HomePod minis can challenge some $200 soundbars at that price point, at least ones that don’t come with a sub.
Thanks Kevin! It's the Keychron Q1 with an all black set of Cherry keycaps from WASD. I like clicky keyboards so I ordered my Q1 with Gateron Blue switches back when I got it.

Thanks Eric I am just starting to setup my HomeKit and your videos are really helpful.Question I have an older 4K Apple TV and I am wondering if it supports thread and how I would know?
Please can you explain why you don't think using HomePods as TV speakers is a good idea? This was a major part of my purchasing them. Get a pair of the original ones together and you have a Dolby Atmos-enabled TV system. It is brilliant! I can't see any reason why doing this is a bad idea. I'm really interested to hear your thoughts.
I have one and like it, but it's not the newest one. Don't see a need to upgrade it at this point. I have HomePod Mini's to handle anything Thread related.
I have had every model since the first generation. I currently have two 4K devices in my house... one for my home theatre and one controlling my smart bike trainer app in the basement.
Hi, I’ve been using Apple TV’s, the Mac Mini size one with the HDD, since Apple first came out with them. So, I have one for each generation. I love them. The AirPlay feature is great especially for showing presentations at a meeting even when there’s no Wi-Fi access points. I think you should have at least one in every household.😀
As far as reasons to buy an ATV, cases vary. But given its omission in this video, we bought one primarily because it is anoher part of the Apple “ecosystem,” however real or significant some people think that is. Apple devices are unified by things other than HomeKit, and all of our devices were Apple way before iCloud, because we valued Sync. It is important to me to be able to consult current data on Contacts or Calendar, no matter which device I’m using. Etcetera.
Wow. This is very helpful. I have been tiptoeing on the idea of purchasing an Apple TV 4K since I want to make a smart lighting setup. I recently got the Homepod Mini and now I can confirm my original thought of having redundant systems in my home. Thank you Eric!
Eric, as you recall on your previos video and my comment, I’m still struggling getting this brand new LG to work with HomeKit. AirPlay is nowhere to be found in the menu which is based on videos is what gives you the option for the pairing code/ The number is that LG support has no clue and one rep told me I must have appletv to make it HomeKit compatible which we know is not true. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I have two Apple TVs. One is the fourth generation model (HD model) and the other one is the first 4K model. When I got the 4K model, I connected it to my Samsung 4K TV. They were not compatible. Samsung finally said the same thing. Consequently, if you’re looking for a new TV to go with your current Apple TV, make sure that the Apple TV and the new TV are compatible. By the way, I had to sell the Samsung TV and bought a Sony which is fine.
Nice video man, I’m planning of buying a Apple TV, I have 2 Nvidia shield one is use for PLEX and the other one is use for media but thank to Google that they update the OS now there is ads in the Home Screen and the one I use for media it lag a lot with Netflix it has nice features but I don’t like that anymore.
Apple needs to fix the problem with ARC and Dolby Atmos. I tried an AppleTV, and I had to hook it directly to my TCL TV to get Dolby vision, but it wouldn’t send the Dolby Atmos over ARC to my Yamaha receiver. (From Apple support) “Apple TV 4K uses a high bandwidth form of Dolby Atmos that doesn’t work over ARC connections.” I can watch Dolby vision, and send Dolby Atmos to my receiver with apps running on the built in Roku player.
Have 3 of the 4k model. My local tv provider has an app so I don’t need their set top box. The new Apple 4k boxes are the easiest and best replacement set top box to use.
I don’t understand why only Apple TV’s and HomePods and iPads work as HomeKit hubs. Why not any of the Macs? Or simply, why don’t they make a standalone hub that costs $29 or something? Frustrating that Apple would make the cost of entry into their remote smart home ecosystem so high. Apple has never approached the smart home sensibly in the way Amazon has.
Well, for one reason, if you were to use a Mac as a HomeKit hub the Mac would have to be on the whole time or else your hub would function intermittently. HomePods are always on and it would appear that Apple TVs, while appearing to be off, are still on in the background to handle hub tasks. (Not sure about that last part because my HomePods grab any Siri commands well before the Apple TVs have a chance to.) Frankly, I would not want my Mac awakening every time I ask for a light to be turned on in the middle of the night-or for that matter when I start up my hill and tell my Apple Watch to turn on the lights.
Hey Eric! Can you confirm that you CANNOT add HomePod minis as speakers for the 1st gen ATV 4K? I have one in my bedroom and would really like to pair HomePods with the TV so the sound is closer to our ears and we don't have to blast the TV, waking up my daughter :)
I'm not Eric, but I can remember reading about this. They will work as paired speakers you just won't get Dolby Atmos. I can't see why Gen 1 4K wouldn't allow it as there isn't really anything different between G1 & G2. Just a different remote :-)
I have a HomePod mini paired with an Apple TV 4K first gen. it works very well. Much better than the TVs inbuilt speakers. I also bought the upgraded remote. That was well worth it too. €70, it for something I use for a few hours everyday it’s worth it.
Does anyone know if there is a way to play sound through the TV while listening on my AirPods? My Family says I play the TV too loud. This feature would allow me to hear the TV better but not play the TV sound too loud. :-)

I love my apple tv we use it so much a-lot. Use it to watch movies, play games with controller and to hear music on our stereo system. One thing we use it alot for is for Karaoke. We connect a bluetooth speaker to apple tv that has a microphone. And play karaoke 🎤 videos found on youtube. Music plays through bluetooth speaker and karaoke video only on tv. Wish there was a way to install a VPN application on Apple TV. To be able to watch content from other countries and now have to airplay it through apple tv from an iPhone.
Not the best streamer by far. It's my least used streamer the OS sucks. Fire TV and Google TV integrates all of you paid services together on the home screen along with live TV. My Apple TV 4K has become nothing more than a paperweight.
@@appleforever6664 If it were only that simple. I need it as a homekit hub in order for Geofencing to work with my ecobee thermostat when I carry my iPhone. I don't use it for watching any media. I use the RUclips app on my lg 65 inch oled. That gives me the best experience. I have my tv hard wired to my router. I love my Apple TV for Plex and the cable tv go apps. I can binge watch my cable shows.
I love the Apple ecosystem. I own plenty of Apple devices. However, I haven't gotten on the Apple TV train yet... I own a Fire Stick TV 4K and it's a lot cheaper, I have it connected to my LG TV and everything works seamless. The only feature I wish I could have would be having HomeKit Video on my TV... 😔
Just imagine the potential of having a whole iDevices family with M1 (or more) for game developers : develop once => compatible with all Apple devices (except phones that will need some optimisations). I hope a good future for AAA games on the Apple platform.
Apple TV is great but living between few countries I find it less useful outside of the United States, you just can’t take advantage of it’s full functionality such as apps and services
I loved the sound and the compact size of stereo OG HomePods as the full time Apple TV output, but I had regular connection issues, which eventually became too frustrating. For example, one of the HomePods would go silent for a minute or so and then just come back. I tried all sorts of solutions, including running a new WiFi access point into the same room, but it still happened. I agree with Eric that a wired speaker solution is probably the better way to go, at least for me.
One of my OG HomePods is habitually worse than the other. It was always on my nightstand, in a bad part of the house for wifi. I recently brought it out in the living room with the other OG HomePod to make a stereo pair, and it still has issues. I think there's something up with the hardware of that specific unit. Do you think your problem could be tied to a specific HomePod?
@@mrlt1151 it could be faulty hardware, and I admittedly haven’t pursued it with Apple support yet. I’ve repurposed the stereo pair to be solo HomePods in different rooms.
I just think they're overpriced for what they do. Sure Apple loyalists can justify it and those specifically invested in Homekit and Thread. But for normal Smart TV apps? It's too expensive compared to a Fire TV, Google TV, Roku impulse buy or even having apps in the TV itself. Maybe if they had Siri microphones or a camera? But as of now? Too expensive and kinda an uncertain future as it stands. They need to shave off about $40 on the price tag. They're asking too much and refuse to make a stick. $99 would be the sweet spot.
A few more comments. 1) Profiles on Apple TV 4K in a household of "adults" is pretty important. Holding 1 button to change to "each" profile brings in their unique ATV+ content, up next, etc. Also, it uses their Apple Music library etc. Finally, most built in TV apps are crap and crash constantly. :)
Apple TV is a streamers must have device, built in streaming apps are terrible an don’t receive the same amount of updates plus interface is in my mind superior. Of course as a HomeKit hub 😀
Bought 1 even if I already got an Android TV. Dolby Vision is too dark and does not support HDR10+. Only using this for airplay to bring up documents in big screen. Other than that so useless if you already got an Android TV.
Hi. Thanks for an excellent video. I ask you to not have the mindless music in the background during the time you are speaking. I, and many others, find the background music highly distracting and anxiety producing and it masks your voice when we are trying to get life information from you. Please consider this in the future. I have to stop listening only a few minutes in. Thanks!

I do have the Samsung S95B and the Tizen OS itself is a reason😂
I also have many apple products, so I thinks its a good Idea to buy a Apple Tv 4K.
I will see Tomorrow :)
Yes because important for HomeKit (Philips Hue and Eve Thread) and I watch sometimes the movies.
Thanks for the video! You said you live in Chicago - which suburb do you actually live in? (Said jokingly) Thanks for the videos, Eric.
I love the OG HomePods as TV Speaker setup. What’s the reason you don’t?
I love my apple tv we use it so much a-lot. Use it to watch movies, play games with controller and to hear music on our stereo system. One thing we use it alot for is for Karaoke. We connect a bluetooth speaker to apple tv that has a microphone. And play karaoke 🎤 videos found on youtube. Music plays through bluetooth speaker and karaoke video only on tv. Wish there was a way to install a VPN application on Apple TV. To be able to watch content from other countries and now have to airplay it through apple tv from an iPhone.
I subscribed because of this video!
Apple TV is the best streamer by far!
Not the best streamer by far. It's my least used streamer the OS sucks. Fire TV and Google TV integrates all of you paid services together on the home screen along with live TV. My Apple TV 4K has become nothing more than a paperweight.
@@deman19901 - In that case, I will buy the Apple TV 4K off you for a $1.00! lol
@@appleforever6664 If it were only that simple. I need it as a homekit hub in order for Geofencing to work with my ecobee thermostat when I carry my iPhone. I don't use it for watching any media.
The crazy thing is that Geofencing for my Ecobee works natively from my Android phone no additional hardware needed.
Forgot about sharing my Home Screen across my Apple TV’s. Thanks for the reminder. 👍
I use the RUclips app on my lg 65 inch oled. That gives me the best experience. I have my tv hard wired to my router. I love my Apple TV for Plex and the cable tv go apps. I can binge watch my cable shows.
Yes
Lmaoo I have 3 Apple TV’s in my house. One in my bedroom, living room and theater room. Don’t regret a single one.
And my girlfriend has 2 at her place 😆
I love the Apple ecosystem. I own plenty of Apple devices. However, I haven't gotten on the Apple TV train yet... I own a Fire Stick TV 4K and it's a lot cheaper, I have it connected to my LG TV and everything works seamless. The only feature I wish I could have would be having HomeKit Video on my TV... 😔
I’m started to be exhausted by the speed and reliability of Android TV, I’m waiting 1 or 2 years for an M1 Apple TV 🤞
Just imagine the potential of having a whole iDevices family with M1 (or more) for game developers : develop once => compatible with all Apple devices (except phones that will need some optimisations).
I hope a good future for AAA games on the Apple platform.
Even more with macOS 12.3, tvOS and iOS 15.4 compatible with the adaptative triggers of the PS5 DualSense
Yes this is so capable so powerful but not utilize like game streaming etc and shiuld support dolby true hd passthrough
Apple TV is great but living between few countries I find it less useful outside of the United States, you just can’t take advantage of it’s full functionality such as apps and services
I’m getting one in 24 hours. You know the model 😎
Jackbox is a fun game what you can do on Apple TV
What normal person compares an Apple tv box with light bulbs? That’s dumb.
Anyone tell you that you look like a blonde Conan o’ Brien?
I paid $200 for Nvidia Shield. Apple? Certainly, but can you write apps for it for free? Sure, not.
All smart TV's have the things Apple TV gives. Doesn't make sense to get it and waste of money
Apple TV is a streamers must have device, built in streaming apps are terrible an don’t receive the same amount of updates plus interface is in my mind superior. Of course as a HomeKit hub 😀
The Apple TV it should be called the MAXI PAD
Bought 1 even if I already got an Android TV. Dolby Vision is too dark and does not support HDR10+. Only using this for airplay to bring up documents in big screen. Other than that so useless if you already got an Android TV.
Hi. Thanks for an excellent video. I ask you to not have the mindless music in the background during the time you are speaking. I, and many others, find the background music highly distracting and anxiety producing and it masks your voice when we are trying to get life information from you.
Please consider this in the future. I have to stop listening only a few minutes in. Thanks!
thanks for saving me 200 dollars hahaha!
Idk how such “smart” company as Apple with all those educated people decided NOT to make mute button for the remote… how stupid is it? They did fixed this with new remote but anyways how it was possible having remote without mute for years 🤬
Before WWDC 2022 will create.
It is just waste of money for most of us. Apple never really cared about this product.
No
And right now u get a 50 $ gift card
