Having actually been a trapper, and having many in my family, I would argue it is the Spay blade that makes the knife a “Trapper”. You get a general use blade in the clip point, for making trap setups, and a spay blade as you actually will be skinning. It isn't the most perfect skinning blade, but I couldn’t imagine getting a fully rounded tip blade to work well on the knife. Cheers.
Yeah buddy, same here, I don’t dislike any of them either, I just thought it funny that so many people “hate a trapper or Spey blade” because it’s “no longer needed” in today’s society but then the same guy says he lives a PEN BLADE, that was designed for sharpening quills lol
The only useless thing about any blade is the lack of imagination of the user. You just have to take your time and think about the cut you are going to make. I love your vintage knives. And I’m still a trapper man. Great video, Wes, hope you are doing well. Love the Timex Expedition watches. I have been wearing a G-Shock as my daily driver. Take care and God bless!
Yea I agree, to me a sharpened piece of steel is just a sharpened piece of steel, some designs are obviously suited for certain tasks but at the end of the day they’ll all cut most things. I know you’ve heard the Spey blade hate, isn’t crazy how similar it actually is to the clip? And as far as pen blades, I didn’t mean to say I thought they were useless I was just making the point that so many ppl criticize the Spey for its intended design and lack of modern day demand but yet praise a blade designed to sharpen quills lol thanks for stopping by Rj! Yes I’m doing good hope you are as well!! Keep those trappers alive!
Great video!! I agree 100% on this!! It has many uses and the profile very similar to the clip. I think a lot of people hear a non outdoorsman bash it and hopped on the hate train. Those are 5 killer Slipjoints for sure to be carrying around!! That Viper is killer!!
I've got a Case Copperhead with a spey blade. I prefer it to my Copperhead with the pen blade, mainly for it's versatility. I like a spey blade for scoop cuts while carving and if the spey has more sweep I like it for skewing and plunging type cuts as well. I have a few whittlers with pen blades that don't see as much use as my whittlers with a small clip, coping and or sheepsfoot. Some carvers like a pen blade, I'm not one of them. My primary use for a pen blade is using it to cut something I probably shouldn't be using a knife for. That razor of yours is more appealing that all the other razors I've seen put together. Very nice!
So I believe that’s called a “Trapperhead” and that’s a really cool somewhat rare pattern, I’ve only ever seen a few! So that’s very cool!! And yea I can see how the Spey would make an excellent choice for certain cuts! You do an amazing job on those carvings by the way!! Thanks for the kind words! Yes I agree that razor is pretty darn cool! Thanks for stopping by MO!!
Enjoyed this one a lot man!! I have never used the Spey for it’s intended purpose…yet…but i will say i carry a Trapper or Mini Trapper quite a bit and i use the spey quite a bit, especially on the mini where the spey is canted down👍 sweet, sweet pieces you have there brother!!💯😎👊
Great comparison. I personally use the spay wayyyy more than the pen blade. Let me ask you a question, what do you see more being abused pen blades or spay blades…. Exactly every time you see and old knife in most scenarios the pen blade is untouched.
Sweet looking knives and BLADES lol. I am with you there. I will use what ever blade i pull out. I don't own any knives with a spay blade, not that i wont buy a knife with that blade because i would. I am not a blade snob lol. As long as that blade will cut, it's getting used lol.
Interesting topic, I honestly never put much thought into which blade I’m using for what other than obvious situations! I’ll cut my sammich with just about any of them😂. I really dig the look of the large pen blade in copperheads and razors for some reason! Now that’s a top 5 set of bangers! I think I need to show my 5 favorites too!! I’m a timex fellow myself! I normally just wear mine til it breaks and get a new one! Currently I have the orange faced expedition! I love all useless blades! All knives matter brother!
Yeah man you know I don’t hate any blade designs, just pointing out how similar the clip and Spey ACTUALLY are and also how people will criticize the Spey for its uselessness in our modern society but then praise the pen blade which was literally designed to sharpen quills lol but I don’t hate any of them personally! Unless they have two nail nicks and an ez open and a magic marker dye job 😂
I’ve said it before that my perfect two blade would be a nice clip and a sheepsfoot lol and I know the Spey looks dumb, but it’s no reason to call it useless lol
A jack with a sheepfoot was a fairly common pattern at one point. I have a schatt and morgan version, but it's too nice to use. Not much surprises me anymore, but the fact that no one is producing that pattern is on the list. 😁

I can’t think of a blade I actually dislike, this was just a comparison of two old blade designs that one of which people deem useless and the other they seem to love and they’re both technically outdated but in my mind both, especially the Spey, still very useful! Thank you for watching
I think people look at blade shapes and like what they look like more than what there named or intended to do. If they have a choice in using one over another they pick the one they like the look of over others. That does not make it the best choice if they have two or three different blades to pick for using. Long blades are better for cutting a sandwich, short blades are better for sharpening pencils. Pencil sharping has no need for a pointy tip. You will cut yourself less using the shortest blade that does the task best. You also have more control using a short blade. Knife collectors are like a flock of chickens one starts clucking and the rest do to. They have no idea why they joined in but do it anyway. 🤔

Very good points!
I was taught that the spey blade is what made it a trapper, spey is a good blade and has many uses
Brilliant video, mate. I love the spey! I can't say I dislike any blade shape, though.
Mate, that lineup of knives 🫠🤯! That Barlow!!
Cheers Doom 👊

@doomcrewoutdoors1613 Your right brother. 👊
Some great points. I've never had a problem with a spay blade. I use it the same as any other. Great video 👍
Thanks Jeremy!
Of the 5 you picked (I’ve never seen a GEC in person) I like your father in laws best, glad you have it.

@@doomcrewoutdoors1613 oh yes. I totally agree with where you are coming from. It’s dumb to hate on a blade shape.
Good video, all your points are valid!
Love the Trapper and the Spey blade…it has many uses. The 75 has a short Spey blade. Good point about the pen blade! Thanks DoomCrew!
thanks Randy!!

I think so too, so many people form
Opinions without proper experience or evidence, thanks for checking it out jerry!
The trapper isn’t one of my favorite patterns but I have to agree that the Spey blade is useful and can do more then just process animals.
Yes sir, thanks bud!

I was literally at my desk cutting an apple with the spey on one of my mini Trappers while watching this. Tasty
💪🏼
Heck yeah!!! An apple a day keeps the doctor away!!

For me personally,
a spey just looks 🤪
I prefer a sheepfoot secondary blade for opening boxes

Yes sir! Thanks man!
I use my pen blade constantly. The clip blade as well. I don’t need a trapper it’s to thick. Equal end/opposite ends forever .
Fair enough!! Thanks for checking it out buddy!
