The Ultimate Shipping Container Buying Guide - Avoiding SCAMMERS!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 май 2024
- In this week's video, Channing will take you around our Container Yard to show you what to look for, and what to avoid while looking to buy or rent a shipping container!
Things to consider while purchasing a Shipping Container:
Only Used Once (One Trip):
-Perfect for Storage
-Can be CSC Certified for Ocean-Vessel Shipment
-Very few dents or scratches (if any at all)
-Won’t require any painting
-Won’t require pressure wash
-Surface rust is very minimal
Many local municipalities or inspectors require the use of OTU condition containers for varying reasons. These are only a few examples and the important lesson here is that you do not want to spend thousands of dollars modifying a container only to find out afterwards it does not pass inspection or code.
-Perfect For Storage
-Secure, Rodent Proof & Watertight
-Can be CSC Certified for Ocean-Vessel Shipment
-Many dents or scratches (if any at all)
-May require some painting
-May require a pressure wash
-Some surface rust should be expected
If you’re looking for a used shipping container to export, we recommend a CWO (cargo-worthy) container. CWO containers are used shipping containers ranging in age from 10-15+ years old that will pass a CSC (container safety certification) survey.
Roughly 12-15+ years in age, wind and water tight containers have been retired from shipping service by the intermodal companies that own them.
International vs Domestic Containers
Ocean-going containers are all 8′ wide which is the width of a container vessel slot. Ocean going containers are utilized on roads, rail and ship which allow them to transport internationally. Ocean-going containers include both standard and high cube versions of 20′, 40′, and 45′. Containers must have a valid CSC plate in order to sail with cargo. One time use containers come with a valid CSC for a duration of 5 years before re-inspection is required.
You will notice some containers (48’s and 53’s) are 6″ wider (8’6″ wide outside). These are domestic containers meaning they stay in North America and only used on roads and rail. The extra 6″ of width is huge for some modifications that require over 8′ of interior width. The 53′ steel, non-insulated and aluminum insulated both provide 8’2″ width inside.
Manufacture Types - Container Selection for Your Next Mod Project
Container design for the most part has become standardized where most manufacturers’ finished products look pretty much identical. Container Modification World products are designed after the most common container type. If you are shopping for a container to modify and pan to use our kits, ensure the container you purchase has the following:
a 60 mm square tubing running the length of the container along the top of the corrugations.
corrugations that are 11″ o/c (actually 10 15/16″ or __mm) similar to Figure A. below
Conversely, what you do not want buy is a container with the flat bar running the length of the container welded to the top of the corrugations and the Hanjin style corrugations similar to Figure B. below.
Even if this seems confusing to yourself as the consumer, the two varying types should be common knowledge to your container retailer. If your retailer doesn’t know the difference, they likely do not have much experience in the industry and you might want to continue to call around.
B E W A R E O F S C A M S:
You may have heard about last year's scams that targeted unsuspecting buyers looking to purchase containers online in Eastern Canada. They are now targeting customers in North America using companies like The Container Guy to scam honest people out of thousands of dollars.
We want to take some time to address our customers and show you a few ways to protect yourself from being scammed.
1. Verify the number you’re calling matches the company’s. You can do a simple Google search or look them up in a phonebook.
2. Check the email closely for any inconsistencies. For example, our email domains are @thecontainerguy.ca and @tcg.ca. If the email they provide is any different, it is a scam.
3. Ensure you receive an official estimate and/or sales order before sending payment. At TCG we ALWAYS send a sales document before asking for payment.
4. If in doubt, you can verify you’re dealing with the correct dealer by calling their office.

I am a fraud investigator. I have been for over 30 years. I have a very fine-tuned bullshit detector. I was very impressed with this gentleman's honesty and candor. I'd do business with him in a heartbeat! Good guy!
I sold shipping containers from home online. Most Craigslist stuff is a lie. WWT (wind and water tight) are garbage, and Cargo Worthy ones aren’t that much better either. If you really want a container get a 1 Trip! Yes they are more money but you will be much happier I promise. My suggestion is to fight for a discount and do not buy one until you get it and use a credit card to protect yourself or pay cash on delivery.
Thanks for the comment Herb

Because I just went through this, I figure I'd share. Pricing is such a closely guarded secret in the industry. You know the containers simply must not cost the sellers very much. The markup is crazy from what I've seen. The current price in Colorado 20' standard, 1-time use = $4000+tax&delivery. 20' double-door 1-time use = $5800ish, 40' HC Standard 1-time use = $5200ish, 40 HC double-door 1-time use, $7800ish 😳😂 used units are roughly 40% less across the board.

Hello! New sub👋🏼👋🏼 from CP here. Love what you do, I look forward to watching your vids!
Very interesting video. Thanks for sharing.
I would want two like a couple of 20-footers that allow access in-between the walls, housing stuff on one side and a workshop on the other, I currently live in a single-car garage and only use the one side really as the newer garbage cans use up the rest. The workshop is just for tig welding. Small spaces are just the cat's meow. They're pretty much "Zombie can" proof and they have a military feel/vibe to them, I don't like the wood neither for walls nor drywall. I want something I can clean and fast because of simplicity. I'm liken those steel studs and spring nuts 🤪 being able to adjust for life as it changes, very good features.
Thanks. Good info

Good video! It should help people looking to buy... But, You should have mentioned that if people think these are super secure, they are NOT.. anyone with a diamond blade saw can get into them in less then 90 seconds, by cutting off the lock hasp... OR, taking 3 minutes, to cut a man size hole in the side. I know this from personal experience of having mine broken into twice.

Great information!
I wish I could have bought a container from your business. Honest, and ethical, and you do great work!
I bought used, but "refurbished", with a roll up door and two of those spinning type of vents.
They pretty much just slapped some paint on it, calling it refurbished. It wasn't freshly painted.
The first thing I had to do was remove all of the dried out, chipping caulk, and recaulk, all around the bottom, and at the seams of the wood floor. One section of floor is a metal panel, and with the old caulk chipping away, you could see day light.
I opened the doors once, and couldn't get them closed by myself. Had to get friends (guys) to get them closed (should've watched them do it, but was pretty frustrated at that point).
You can also see day light in areas when the doors are closed. Don't really need to use the doors, so at some point I will figure out a way to seal those gaps from the inside.
It's empty now, and I need to clean up all of the dust and sand that has blown in, probably from the roll up door the most.
At some point I would like to build in a small room (that will stay cleaner) so I can use it to camp in during the winter (it's on property in the California desert). Unfortunately, one of those spinning vents is in the area, and I'll need to figure out what to do about that.
I was really excited to see the new window frames you featured recently.
They seam to be a lot simpler to put together and install.
Thank you so much for all of the great information y'all provide in your videos.
And thanks for letting me vent a little 😏
Your friend from Yuma AZ
❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎
You likely don't have brush seal around your roll up door so the whirlybird vents are pulling the dust in - doing more harm than good. We could sell you a brush seal kit that would help filter the intake air a bit but no promises on how to fix other people's poor products. Would need some BigAir45's down low as intake vents. Get the ones with bug screens and put a filter mesh material in them to filter the dust. If ever you need help plugging the roof hole, send us an email and I'll help come up with a solution.
great stuff

Love your vids and communication. I’m in San Antonio and considering ordering around 100 1-trips. What would you recommend for someone buying in bulk, in terms of saving money on the big order, when compared to buying just one at a time?

Which containers for sale companies are reputable in the Vancouver or Victoria, Canada?
I'm over in Mississippi. I haven't looked around locally yet, wondering if you're aware of containers in the Mississippi area.

I can see where a container with doors on both ends would be handy in my eyes. Talk about air flow! That would be a VERY handy thing in my hot/humid area. ESPECIALLY if a person where to use such a thing for a place to sleep but no A/C exists. (think less than ideal developed areas)
BTW, how can you put doors on the outside AND the inside?
Sad you do not do montreal! If you have provider suggestion for one time use.
Any idea if a surplus military modular container be certified for shipping by sea? It does not have the bronze cert placard as with most containers but several smaller placards stating shipping by military air transport or sea transport. It does have serial number markings on the outside on all four sides but there is nothing stating shipping volume but it does show net weight and possible loaded weight. It is not a standard height of 8 feet but it sits at 7 feet high. All of the container has a steel frame with the eight corner lock down castings and the walls are lightweight aluminum foam sandwich with steel studs through out it’s length.
Very, very helpful, thank you! BTW if the floors are wood, can't a determined rodent chew through eventually? And what blocks do you put them on, and what do you do to keep moisture from underneath them rotting them out? Thanks again for the great video. I subscribed. I see other interesting ones to watch :)
I put driveway rocks under mine, rabbits got underneath, I am going to have to plug the spots they can get under....
@@ericblust5923 Thanks for the info! I wonder if "expanded-metal" lath would help? It is what's attached to a house to apply the stucco too. Home Depot sells it. It could be put into the ground a certain amount, then run up to the bottom edge or so, to prevent digging under. Do you have a wood floor in yours? Is it wood underneath? Any signs of rot? Thanks again for your comment!
Everything is dry, the area drains well, no wood rot, I don't see how it could get wet in there, I think I am going to try and stuff more stones under it and around it to keep critters out, I plan to move it at some point.
@@ericblust5923 I understand! If they dig out the rocks, you will be able to tell, no doubt. Sounds like a good plan! Thanks for sharing your experience with me!
@@CuriousEarthMan also, I picked a high spot, so even if it floods, oh well.. I don't know what you are trying to do with the container... I use it for temporary storage... But, if I wanted a structure to live in, out in the woods, I would build a pole barn style building and not use a container. I don't foresee treated poles coated in tar and completely incased in concrete, going any where or rotting in my life time, building with wood is easy for me, but for others, I have seen guys buy big sheds from the Amish and put in a wood stove, drive a well and an outhouse and you have all you need to live ...
Any tips on painting them?

I have a question, I live in Northern Minnesota, we have hot humid summers, and cold snowy winters with extreme temps. I just bought a 40' one trip container from a local supplier. I plan on storing a 1969 rust free classic pickup truck in it throughout the winter months. I've recently heard some people mention the containers will build condensation on the inside with changes in temperature and humidity. Do I have to worry about this causing a serious rust issue for storing the old vehicle inside, or what can I do to prevent or mitigate such issue from developing? Thanks in advance, love your videos! So informative!
You may be able to insulate it to prevent condensation, I can't remember the techniques but they do similar things for underground homemade fallout shelters
I'm also in Northern MN with two shipping containers, one 10' and one 20' placed on 3" cement blocks over a gravel base. with about 2" of air between the gravel and the the floor of each container. What I learned is to have a two vents on the 10' container, one low and one high for Summer ventilation, and similar vents on the 20' as well. In addition, I had to place a 20 mil pond liner over the gravel, under each container to prevent moisture from wicking up through the floor. I went with 20 mil to try to keep wildlife from burrowing under the container. Before doing this I had a lot of condensation moisture in the containers.I found this to take care of the extreme temperature changes each day and each season in MN. I'm very happy with the results. @@BallstinkBaron

Hi. Thanks for the great info! Do you service Michigan? If not who would you suggest for mid lower peninsula?
You should mention get a ladder and inspect the roof for rust, Cleaning a scaly roof can turn your container into a planetarium.
That's true. If there is flaky rust, you can expose a lot of holes by scraping the rust off.

Do you deliver to Dandridge TN?
Excellent Video. Pricing question: "Do you have quanitty and/or military discounts, if so how much are they? "
Military discounts are typically an American thing. We're in Western Canada. I would gladly give an armed forces vet a deal but it's not a big thing around our service area. My guess is you're too far away to buy from us unfortunately
In colorado , Healdworks, Sales containers with veteran and first responder discounts. Outstanding company and honest. I actually deliever the containers. I have worked for chuck for 4 years and could not be happier. Little pricey but solid honest place.
Looking for two 40’ good use with doors on both ends 😊
i bought 2 from wuwi shipping containers. they were open from nearby areas of US. and they give me a reasonable price for 2 containers. look for Jayson or John they were great
Sure would be nice if u mentioned the prices u charge and what the delivery cost???
Can I drag one into a final position with a tractor without damaging it?
Yes, on hard surfaces or compacted gravel.
No, in loose soils. It will pile up in the cross members and bend them. Do this in winter when the ground is frozen then you'll be fine.
What about flat bed containers?
I bought two 6m containers in Mongolia. The world is metric. Get used to it.
I live half way up a mountain, off-road. I was quite impressed that they were able to bring them up. We had already had a flat spot excavated and I wanted the containers with opposite doors in a line (back to back). They brought a flatbed truck with a crane and lifted them in place. It was quite impressive. The scariest part for the driver was getting up to our property. The truck is very top heavy with a container on and traversing a hill was tricky.
I think I paid $5k for two containers delivered.
That's a good price. We're metric in Canada as well.
New sub from Canadian Prepper! Do you deliver or do any work in the states?? I’m very interested in having a few containers myself. Thanks in advance!
Hi Lisa. Thanks for coming over! We deliver some modified units to the states or have people down there that could install our system.

I just wish you put your company link at the end or in the description.
How do I find a reputable dealer in my area? I live in South Jersey , Ocean City. Jim
The most important point you made in passing was to see what you are getting before you make a purchase. It's a lot of money to pay for something sight unseen.
I sure wish you guys were closer! I am considering getting a one-use 20' container to store lawn equipment in. But I haven't seen anyplace locally that seems half as reputable as you guys. Not that I know much as I am almost afraid to look around here for fear of being ripped off. I am in Alabama, USA. These you are showing look great! Could a Man door be added to the side on the closed end for access? What should that cost in total, just for an idea.
I deliever containers in colorado. We do install all kinds of doors but cost is a massive factor. We use solid steel frames to continue the strength. Also when you find a container online. Don't purchase without seeing the actual container. I see people buy 1 trips online buy get used. The picture can be just generic. I have seen our ads and our contai ers on other sales site. If you get a 1 trip get pictures first before sending money, but double check the container number . It is on the side and on the door and data plate. If the pic was a wngu unit make sure the same container is delivered. There are alot of fake assholes out there. If you can't get actual pics and they want money up front, stay away.
@@jessicahupe9727 Commercial steel doors are purchased with separate doors and frames. Door frames can be ordered in a knock down configuration or welded frame depending on how the installer would install flashing to keep it waterproof

53 foot is very hard to get. And the cost is crazy. A good used 40 is 8k in colorado. A 1 trip 40 is 10k. A good 53, if you can find one is 15k. 53 foot containers do come into sales but again very hard to find.
