    From a NC fan: The factory is in Mayodan, NC just 45 minutes north of Greensboro in the Piedmont, south of the VA line. It is a rural area of rolling hills at the site of an old textile mill and Ruger opened the building in 2013. The reason you don't see the AR 556 in stores, is because they are sold so fast. The factory is running production lines almost around the clock and cannot keep up with the orders.

    I bought a Ruger AR556 back in October last year (2016). Great rifle. I put almost a 1000 rounds through it with no malfunctions. This is right out of the box. I'm shooting tighter groups just with the iron sights at 200 yards. I will suggest changing out the trigger. I'm used to a mil spec trigger but this one is a little heavy. Ruger now makes the Elite 452 AR Trigger system. Its a 4.5 lb two stage trigger that sells around $114 (Cheaper than Dirt). In fact I just shot it today at the range using 75 grain .556x45 Creedmore ammunition. My groupings at 200 yards were pretty good considering I was shooting in a 25 mph crosswind. Also, something else I might change on the gun is a little thinner front post sight. But all in all the rifle shoots really well. It is a great gun to shoot, a lot of fun. I walked out of the store with it paying $650 with tax. Its a good home defense gun, and with some work, it could be a good competition rifle. I would recommend this rifle to any shooter, whether you are just starting out or your're a seasoned shooter.

      No no no... not cheaper than dirt. Shame.

    • @davidchalifoux504
      @davidchalifoux504 3 года назад +2

      I modified mine some. I've replaced the lightee hand guard with a heavier one so I can add a light or a bi-pod, which I did for bench or prone shooting at the range. I also replaced the 8.5 lb trigger with a 3.5 two stage trigger. Much better for shooting long range (600 yards+). And then added a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6X24 ARBDC scope as well as a detatchable Burris Scope Mount. Makes shots up to 600 yards so much easier. Set up to fire 75 grain .223 or 5.56mm. Never had a jam. But if you do purchase one, don't ever use steel casings in an AR. They tend to jam with steel. I've seen it happen countless times for others on the range. I've got about a little over $1400 into it. Love the rifle. Ruger did a great job!!

    • @davidchalifoux504
      @davidchalifoux504 2 года назад +2

      @J V That is your opinion and you're certainly intitled to it. But my Ruger shoots smoother than when I pulled out of the box. The rifle out of the box was $650. Believe me, when you work around a lot of professional shooters like I did when I worked for the CMP, $1400 into a Ruger AR is nothing. The Vortex scope and Burris mount alone was $550. I could've purchased it a little cheaper but everyone was sold out of that model at the time except the BassPro Shop. If I left it stock and just changed the trigger out, I would've only spent $145 extra. But when you shooting at $10,000 fiber optic targets at 600 yards in windy conditions, you want something that shoots smooth and accurate. If I wanted something to plink on or for home use, I wouldn't have put anything into it. Makes sense?

    I got one a couple months ago, and I am quite pleased. No jams after roughly 400+ rounds, 100 or so of which were TulAmmo. For the price you do lose a few things. No chrome in the barrel, no nitride, no melonite, rough trigger, and bad furniture. But it is still a well made reliable accurate(as far as carbine length ARs go) rifle. I was a little worried that for the price it might be a jammer, but I was wrong. I wouldn't hesitate at all to buy another, and I highly recommend this rifle.

    I’m 1 1/2 years into owning the ruger 5.56 I also own a few palmetto state rifles as well. I am very pleased with the ruger, as I am with the palmetto rifles. The ruger has run flawlessly for me so far. The BGC seems of nice quality it’s 9320 instead of c158 but either material is fine. The overall quality fit and finish of the bgc is very nice, chrome lined carrier and key, good staking on the key, no signs of premature wear on locking lugs, the trigger was pretty stiff at first as mentioned but I have noticed that it has smoothed out a lot after shooting a while. I’ve not had any malfunctions of any sort yet. I’ve never used steel cased ammo tho. I have used quite a few varieties of brass cased 5.56 and .223 and I feed it from either magpul p msgs or the palmetto branded D&H Usgi aluminum mags with magpul followers and again I’ve had zero malfunctions. Roughly 2500 rnds thru it so far and while I realize that’s not a very high round count I feel it’s well beyond the break in period and it’s plenty safe to form an opinion on the rifle. I don’t abuse the rifle but I do shoot it hard at times and heat it up a bit, I’ve kept it lubed and it just runs. I purposely not been obsessive about cleaning it. I’ll be a thorough cleaning after 800-1000 rnds and periodic wipe and down and re oil of the BGC in between the thorough cleanings. I did clean bore after every 5 rounds during the initial break in until I reached 25 rounds. (No idea if this really makes a difference) main reason I do it is to stop any copper build up around any burrs at the gas port until they have been smoothed out. With a cheap scope the rifle easily shorts 1 inch or under at 50 and right around 1 1/2 at 100 and when I say cheap scope I mean it. I am certain accuracy would be even better with a better scope. Quite happy with my purchase I bought mine with magpul furniture and it was right at 650 at the shop I got it from 1 1/2 years ago. For anyone in the fence about it I don’t think you could go wrong with the ruger or the m&p sport and sport ll

    Just got mine a few days ago. She still in the box. Haven't shot it yet. People have to realize this Ruger AR is msrp 749.99 But some gun shops due to large order or what not "especially Davidsons supplier" had a screaming good deal to dealers and brick/mortar stores making this a awesome deal to be had from 585-649 in most places. "paid 629 plus tax on mine"Ok so it not stamped Daniel Defense or Stagg, but for the average joe like myself taking the wife out to the gun range and shooting many firearms we own, this just completes my variety in the ar department. like Hickock45 stated for what you have on this firearm parts wise that he pointed out, its a fine and dandy piece.Not to mention rugers customer service and warrantys on this piece is above most others if not in the top 10 best. My buddies own a few and they are invaluable for coyote hunting and a lot of fun to practice our shooting with on get togethers. After trying all of there ARs the Ruger was the only 1 that stood out to me, it feels solid, no shake to it, its simple, easy to clean and plenty of additional options. Since I bought mine I've pulled 2 deer from the woods with it, retiring my old 30-30 almost completely. Its accurate, its light but sturdy, the ammos cheap.....Man its jus all you need.

Hardly anything else needed to be done to the rifle beyond that, and I now use it for competition. I've yet to have any sort of malfunction with it and the "accuracy" is dead on. My very first match we had to shoot 18 steel 10" plates at 200 meters and it never let me down.

      .223 tends to run cheaper, and should be more than adequate for target practice purposes.
      Just check out .223 vs 5.56 prices on Ammoseek to see the difference in cost.
      The rifle's 1:8 twist barrel is great with 55 grain, 62 grain, and even 77 grain ammunition. Whilst I don't know how well this will run steel cased, it runs nearly every other type of ammo no problem.

I've shot remanufactured brass & steel cased ammo without incident. A draw back to this rifle is that it's a little short in overall length. As always thanks for the review Hickok!

  • @nathanchampion3809

    I've watched this vid many times because I like ARs so much. I don't have a piston operated AR...yet. When you mentioned barrel twist and who may not notice a difference, my experience was with a 1/7 twist barrel 55 gr. ammo would give me a 2 to 3" inch group at 100 yards. A 69 gr. round performed much differently. I did a three shot group at 11/16". Someone I know did a 1.25" group with 10 shots with an identical rifle. At 500 yards this would make a great difference as I am certain you know. There is NOTHING I could tell you about concerning firearms, it is just that as "inexperienced" as my comparable experience and knowledge would you compared to yours research and trial of different weight bullets can make a world of difference. What if I chose to shoot turkeys? There would be many happy turkeys upon the end of my hunt. LOL.

    Is it just me or are AR15s way overpriced considering that they are the modern rifle of our time? I paid $1,100 for my MP15 in 2012 right before all the 223 dried up for a year or so. It had a nice quad rail and pmag pop up sights when I bought it. I regret buying it all the time when I see these MP15s for $600. I hate price fluctuations in the AR market really.

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  9 лет назад +50

      +Austin “TheAwesomeAustin” France That's just a political issue. The manufacturers have no real control over that pricing. It's like the price of gold or something; if the government threatens laws against owning something, it's quite a natural thing that more people are going to stock up on that product, which is one reason why there are so many millions of AR15 in our homes now. Politicians are the best gun salespeople on the planet; they've successfully sold millions and millions of guns to people who might not even have otherwise bought them. It's actually a really good thing, though, because the more people who have them, the harder they become to ban.

    • @SerenGetter
      @SerenGetter 9 лет назад +4

      Politics effects economics.
      AR15 prices are lower than ever. Quality AR builds are cheaper than ever, and entry level ARs are much better as well.
      On the other hand, AK prices have skyrocketed from the $300 WASRs & $600 Arsenals of early 2000's

      +Austin “TheAwesomeAustin” France Dear good sir, let me tell you about gun prices over here in Europe :) the cheapest you can get an AR15 over here is at about 1200$ for the cheapest DPMS without anything on it, not even steel sights. So pleeeease stop complaining - don't even get me started on ammo prices The worst surplus stuff you can get your hands on will still set you back about 330$/1000 rds. If you want federal AE or something else cheap but clean you will loose at least another 50-100 bucks on top If you want match ammo, better sit down before reading the bill...
