Three bands stand out in my memory from my time as a promoter back in the 1980s. One I won't name for their thankless rudeness and trashing of the dressing room and facilities. Two I remember for their lovlieness, not just their music but their manners and demeanor. One of those was The Go-Betweens. They asked for a very modest fee, no rider (unusual that) and were so happy to sit with us before the gig, chatting and eating the very tasty filled baguettes we had got for them. Just shooting the breeze. Lovely lovely people.

I will be eternally grateful that Grant and Robert decided to film this concert and release it on DVD, because we all know what happened about a year later.
I am probably The Go-Betweens biggest fan from America, and it all started when I discovered the song Surfing Magazines while surfing the web. This song just floored me with it's beautiful, stark simplicity. So, I did a little research and learned of their entire body of work. Soon I had every CD from 1981s Send Me a Lullaby up until 2006s That Striped Sunlight Sound, as well as Grant and Robert's solo output.
My God, what a stunning body of work it is, with Grant and Robert's amazing, jaw-dropping chemistry being the artistic soul and heartbeat of all the various band incarnations.
If you were to take Don and Phil Everly, Simon and Garfunkle, Paul McCartney and John Lennon and mixed them up in a blender, then add just a tad of Lou Reed and top it off with a huge layer of originality, then you would create The Go-Betweens.
I read that this band is a beloved "cult" band in Australia, and I can certainly understand the "beloved" part. Personally, I wouldn't label them as a "cult" band because their artistic merits are too huge to ever be considered cult.
Quite simply put, they are a phenomenal and highly intelligent band that may not appeal to average listeners, but their achievements are vast, not cult and their loving, dedicated fans are many and lifelong. They may not have become big in America, but my passion and admiration for this band is so deep that it makes up for the other 200 million Americans that are missing out.
R.I.P. Mr. Grant, and thank you for sharing your enormous gifts and that wonderful soul with us.

I bought my first Go-Betweens record in 1987 (Liberty Belle) and have heard their music ever since - just can‘t get enough of it even 30 years later... - the melodies are haunting; the arrangements are timeless - true Artists!

I saw both of these gentlemen at separate solo concerts 28 years ago. Nice to see them together here. The Go Betweens were the backdrop soundscape to my late teens and early twenties. Lindy Morrisson the original drummer walked past a cafe I worked in in Sydney, a year or so later with her young daughter and I gave her a free sandwich. Simon and Allanah from the Hummingbirds came to that same cafe once too. I wanted to be rock stars like these guys, but was too shy and lacking in confidence, and didn’t like drunk people or pubs. I became a meditating Buddhist monk instead! Go figure. Brisbane was a nice place in which to be a young man.
    Thanks guys! RIP Grant.

Lindy was the first permanent drummer but The Go-Betweens had Bruce Anton from The Survivors was on drums first time I saw them at a hall besides the Prince Alfred Pub in Caxton St. They were doing songs, Karen and Lee Remick back then.

Grant and Robert perfect song writing couple.. though personally i'll always prefer The Triffids and music written by David McComb. For me Davids lyrics cut deeper. If there's an afterlife, i hope Grant and David caught up with each other.

Sure there was something wrong with him. Obviously far too much drinking, depressions, smoking (read "Grant and I" by Robert Forster). If you live like that you cannot expect to have a long life. But he was a great songwriter like his friend Robert (whom I adore even a bit more). They were great live, too. I saw them as support of Lloyd Cole in Cologne in the early ninetees. The only time ever that people were not waiting for the main act but just listened to them - they could have played for hours...Lloyd was good, too. So, in total this was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. The Go-Betweens are no more but their music is still there. And don't miss to see Robert live whenever you can. He's today better then ever.

It's great to have this of course, but I am a bit nonplussed at some of the song choices: no "Quiet Heart", "Dive for Your Memory", nothing from "Before Hollywood" (maybe "That Way" would have worked). I don't there is anything from "Tallulah" either ("Bye Bye Pride" would have been good), no "Bachelor Kisses" either. Hmm. Maybe due to the four-piece set-up, I guess. Maybe I'm just an old c*nt but does anyone really want to hear the solo stuff or so-called Go Betweens albums made after "Lovers Lane"?

Lindy Morrison and Amanda Brown were sacked in 1990. The band was always loved by their fans, but the problem was there wasn't enough of them. Their 1988 album 16 Lovers Lane should have been a huge seller, but after a year touring it they barely were hanging on financially. They finally got some financial success with their last album released in 2005, Oceans Apart, but unfortunately Grant only hsd one year to enjoy it. Their music will always be with me.

@RUclips Official Having known the band from their early days, I also saw them on their first London tour.
I think it's easy to cast dispersion from afar without really knowing.
Rob was easily the most difficult to connect with, which doesn't mean he didn't have a special relationship with Grant.
I think much of the latter line up had to do with a distinct effort in trying to move away from the 'darlings' of the press and really trying to make inroads into a commercially successful career. (Alas, that still never really happened). And so what happened behind closed doors I suspect only the band members really know about.
The combination of styles between Rob Grant will ensue that their music lasts well into the future.
And it's great reading through some of the comments and seeing that they continue to get newer fans.
      Cheers. 🎶🎶🎶

@RUclips Official Interesting reading, thanks for the reply. 😎
We all know how the rumour mill swings hard in the industry & perhaps by the time you were looking to recruit a drummer, it was nigh on all over.
No doubt many rumours stem from facts, so I'm not doubting you here. Just as you say...Lindy wasn't the main reason for disbanding.
Are you still in the music industry (band context?).
Wow time flies...and jjj certainly isn't what it used to be, which is a loss to many local artists.
I'd have thought they might play some Goon Sax. I don't think any of their albums have raised a mention, not that I listen religiously. I specifically thought "We're not talking", was one of the better albums of 2018 & had a sound that would work well with what they were playing/promoting. But, that's an entirely different convo.
      Cheers. 🎶🎶🎶
