I too have a friend with a roommate that is currently abusing two beautiful girl rats. I have never owned rats before but I couldn't stand going over to my friends apartment and seeing the condition the roommate was leaving them in. I offered to take them on the condition that they immediately clean the cage for the first time in months. So in about 2 weeks I'll be a new mother two rats, I plan on making these Rats the happiest rats in the whole world because of the year of abuse they suffered. I watched both your rat videos but if anyone else has tips for girl rats and keeping them happy pleaee let me know. I have the basics but could always use more knowledge to help with my new babies!!

I have 4 rats and those two channels have been so helpful, though there is also a lot of good information on the internet if you google “taking care of a fancy rat”. Hope this helps!
You will definitely need help with clipping their nails. Use a tiny human nail clipper and an assistant to do so. PLEASE be careful with cutting their nails because their quicks aren’t very visible. Cut their nails in bright light so you can see them better but make sure the light doesn’t bother your new babies. Good luck!

I originally got pet rats as I was not allowed a dog in my apartment. Now they are my second favourite pet. Personality-wise they are a bit between a cat and a dog. They can come when they are called by name (they can learn their name) but often like cats, they will only come when they want to or when they think food is forthcoming.
I love rats. I grew up having them. My heart rat, Sandy, was so sweet. She didn’t stay in a cage. She had free roam of my room. I had another rat that had had a stroke and so i would hand feed her. She lived in a hot pink purse i took with me everywhere and slept between my neck and shoulder every night. I currently do not because i have young kids but i look forward to having them in the future again.

I had my male dumbo rocko that boy was my heart!! He lived for 2 years he passed away this past September. I will never be over it I miss him soooo much. He free range and actually slept in bed with us. Most people didnt understand how he could be free range but he just followed me like a cat or dog would. He loved the weave in between my feet when I wore skirts chasing my feet like a puppy would. Lol. He got to a point where I and he knew it was the end as I type this the tears are hitting my screen he passed away while sleeping on my chest. I took prints of his paws and plan to get them tattooed. On thanksgiving I decided I wanted another one. I know have a Berkshire named zoom. His name suits him dude NEVER stops!!

As my male got older he decided he liked to poop behind the tv stand greatttt right lol no so seeing as he contained it to just that spot id cut them to a smaller size and put puppy potty pads down thst way no urine got on the carpet.
I always wanted rats, and you are one of my reasons why I finally got mine. I got them from a shelter a while ago and they‘re still a bit shy, but I love my boys anyway 💕

Lynnette Doves they are SOOO cute! You sure should get some! They are super social. When you put your hand in their home. They come to sniff it. I give them food out of the hand. And food lasts long! I made a box full of paper and they really enjoy that! I almost have them for a week now! If you want active rats, you should get girls. Boys are a little more lazy, im working on tricks for my girls❤️😃

it makes me laugh how alike we are. same cage, mixing own food, on my ninth & tenth rat boys now (my first two also just 'happened'), naming after linguistic interests... those bell things are adorable, can't see my boys agreeing to wear such things though. :D it makes me happy to see other doting rat keepers talking about their pets, they really are amazing little beings.

Ahh I’m getting two more boys and I’m pretty excited. My rats take up about a quarter of my room There cage has a good playpen around it and it’s open most of the time. They were in a small cage for 8 months with their previous owner so I just wanna spoil em now
I’d recommend switching to a nice substrate for the bottom of their cage, such as Snowflake Supreme, but any kiln-dried dust-extracted substrate would do. The amount of fleece unfortunately encourages peeing and, even with you cleaning regularly (which itself will encourage more smelling and scenting), can build up ammonia which is dangerous for them. The substrate is more natural, helps with smell and is fun to dig and explore in too! It means less cleaning too, apart from perhaps spot cleaning, which frees up your time too. Much with the fleece, the shelves can encourage peeing (rats infamously do this on flat/smooth surfaces), so most rat owners recommend taking shelves out (though these are useful for when they’re older for accessibility) and replace with dog ropes, baskets and such for them to be in, loads of hammocks, there’s loads of things you can add! Generally, the more the space is filled up the better but it depends on the rat(s). I couldn’t see it in the video so I apologise if it’s something you already have but a litter box, even with older rats can help with them pooing in one spot and get a pee rock for them to help with urine too. Again, something dust-extracted like a recycled paper cat litter but not an absorbent one like a hard pellet one as you can the same issue as with the fleece. The smaller wheels you have aren’t ideal for rats due to the curvature of the spines but I’d highly recommend Tic Tac Wheels if you can get one! They range from 12-16” (16 recommended), easy to clean and great for exercise. The cage bar space too might be an issue for younger rats who could easily get their heads through but it depends when you get them of course and not sure of the exact measurement here. You might want to take out raisins in your mix as these can be too sugary for them to have regular access too and would be better as a rare treat. I’d look into what’s called the Shunamite diet, check it out on Google! It’s arguably the best way for owners like yourself who make their own mix! Your rex boy looks like one of my old boys so I loved watching him. I’ve had girls and boys myself but currently have a group of 3 boys and a neutered boy and girl together, long story on that one! I hope advice is useful and considered and thanks for introducing everyone to your mischief! ☺️

That bell idea is genius. I need to keep that in mind for when I have rats again, when I had rats first they tended to get a little lost (I still knew they were in my room but where was an issue ^^)
The water and vinegar solution is a good idea to romove bad smell. You can also use vinegar when cleaning your clothes, it both softens the clothes, kills bacteria, removes bad smell, helps clean the pipes/insides of the washing-machine, and it's less damadging to the environment 😁 I use it myself.... just don't use to much or your clothes will smell of sour vinegar 😅 Ohh, and it's cheap 😉👍

I have two boys, Darrow (Champagne, red eyed) and Sevro (Russian blue, dark eyed) named after two of my favourite book characters (Red Rising series by Pierce Brown). I wish I could get rats but I'm already a snake mom and my flat is really tiny. It would be very tiring to be super careful about washing hands every time after handling the rats before I could handle the snakes. But maybe one day I'll have both :)
I love my rats. I spoil mine like there is no tomorrow. They have the best cage there is in the USA which is the Midwest Double Critter Nation. I have three of those. One for the girls, one for the boys and Perogi and her 4 remaining daughters have their own. They always do something silly and it warms my heart. They are all brats with a capital B. My rats hate my cats. They wait until my cats tails arw close enough to the cages to try and grap them and bite them.
I had 2 rats when I was 10 and they were so much fun! they never bit unlike all my friends hamsters. I could close my door and let them run around my room and they would go back in their cage when they were tired. I used to make them all sorts of toys (looking back now i dont think i used entirely safe materials but I was 10 and dint realize obviously but they still remained healthy their whole lives).
They're so cute! Love it when they make little tunnels in the blankets and poke their faces out. Been thinking about getting a hedgehog, but I'll definitely wait until I have my own place- I'm living with two other people, and it's a small apartment lol. Not that much room for a rodent. Thought about mice, or rats, but I always went back to hedgehogs. Each are so cute though, but I like going a different route. :)
Man, I feel bad, I've killed a number of these that have been caught in my home with traps. I can see they are just looking for food or are curious. I'll catch and release away from my home from now on. I kinda want to own a pet rat now or a couple actually.
My pet rat (pepe) would greet me every morning. I had him in an old aquarium. When I put my hand out, he would run up my arm and ride around on my shoulder. It was his favorite space. I really miss him. :(
I have had pet rats my whole life. They are wonderful. Iv only had boys because I was afraid girls were aggressive. I recently got girls since my boys all passed away in the last year. My girls are very hyper but lovable. The boys were lazy and lovable they loved to sit in my lap. My girls dont hold still they love to explore my room and come when I call there names. I love how smart they are.
I prefer giving my rats as much food as they want. They don’t over eat so I don’t need to worry about that. Also my youngest one needs more weight! I think she was the runt of the litter Your rat who doesn’t like to share food is soooo cute!! A short curly hair rat!!
You can make a hang matt with some fabric and safety pins. They love to sleep there. Accosionally they will bite it to small pieces. I just to have mine in a cage on top of the bathtub and made a lots of holes in the bottom and stones for fish tanks at the bottom. Then I used the shower to clean evwrything and all the piss would get thruevthe holes and the shit would float and go across the edge. Easy cleaning.
I'm giving my rats everything I eat ... Dixie is almost 3 years old and Luna is 2 years and 6 moths old .... Never ever sick or anything . Only Dixie have something on her tail lie a scar or scratch ...dk what is this

They clean each others tails, but honestly it isn’t really dirty at all. Sometimes it can be speckled pigments. Owners can also use baby wipes on them, but of course it trips natural oils. It’s normal!

I’ve had rats cats and dogs living together. The rats are always in charge.
I’ve always said that the food chain of pets goes from smallest at the top with the largest at the bottom (usually dogs lol).

This is an old comment. but fancy and dumbo rats are the same. They require the same care. Just dumbo rats have a different ear shape.

That bell idea is genius. I need to keep that in mind for when I have rats again, when I had rats first they tended to get a little lost (I still knew they were in my room but where was an issue ^^)
The water and vinegar solution is a good idea to romove bad smell. You can also use vinegar when cleaning your clothes, it both softens the clothes, kills bacteria, removes bad smell, helps clean the pipes/insides of the washing-machine, and it's less damadging to the environment 😁 I use it myself.... just don't use to much or your clothes will smell of sour vinegar 😅

I love rats, so many misconceptions. My mum doesn't like them but thats her problem, she's just missing out on the adorable boggling.
I had rats and we were able to train them to go in a litter in there cage so I would only have to change the litter often

There cage has a good playpen around it and it’s open most of the time. They were in a small cage for 8 months with their previous owner so I just wanna spoil em now

OMG I've been watching your videos on and off whenever they appeared on my recommendations, but only JUST did this video show up. As a rat mum myself, I was SO HAPPY to see this. I have two boys, Darrow (Champagne, red eyed) and Sevro (Russian blue, dark eyed) named after two of my favourite book characters (Red Rising series by Pierce Brown). I can't believe you have rats omg!!!!
I wish I could get rats but I'm already a snake mom and my flat is really tiny. It would be very tiring to be super careful about washing hands every time after handling the rats before I could handle the snakes. But maybe one day I'll have both :)
I love my rats. I spoil mine like there is no tomorrow. They have the best cage there is in the USA which is the Midwest Double Critter Nation. I have three of those. One for the girls, one for the boys and Perogi and her 4 remaining daughters have their own. They always do something silly and it warms my heart. They are all brats with a capital B. My rats hate my cats. They wait until my cats tails arw close enough to the cages to try and grap them and bite them.
Someday I will get one... for now, the rules are no rats in the house. RIP
I had 2 rats when I was 10 and they were so much fun! they never bit unlike all my friends hamsters. I could close my door and let them run around my room and they would go back in their cage when they were tired. I used to make them all sorts of toys (looking back now i dont think i used entirely safe materials but I was 10 and dint realize obviously but they still remained healthy their whole lives).

Been thinking about getting a hedgehog, but I'll definitely wait until I have my own place- I'm living with two other people, and it's a small apartment lol. Not that much room for a rodent. Thought about mice, or rats, but I always went back to hedgehogs. Each are so cute though, but I like going a different route. :)

Man, I feel bad, I've killed a number of these that have been caught in my home with traps. I can see they are just looking for food or are curious. I'll catch and release away from my home from now on. I kinda want to own a pet rat now or a couple actually.
My pet rat (pepe) would greet me every morning. I had him in an old aquarium. When I put my hand out, he would run up my arm and ride around on my shoulder. It was his favorite space. I really miss him. :(
I had pet rats for a few years, I miss them so much! Personally for me they were a lot of work, but they're great pets!
I have had pet rats my whole life. They are wonderful. Iv only had boys because I was afraid girls were aggressive. I recently got girls since my boys all passed away in the last year. My girls are very hyper but lovable. The boys were lazy and lovable they loved to sit in my lap. My girls dont hold still they love to explore my room and come when I call there names. I love how smart they are.
I prefer giving my rats as much food as they want. They don’t over eat so I don’t need to worry about that. Also my youngest one needs more weight! I think she was the runt of the litter

You can make a hang matt with some fabric and safety pins. They love to sleep there. Accosionally they will bite it to small pieces. I just to have mine in a cage on top of the bathtub and made a lots of holes in the bottom and stones for fish tanks at the bottom. Then I used the shower to clean evwrything and all the piss would get thruevthe holes and the shit would float and go across the edge. Easy cleaning.
I'm giving my rats everything I eat ... Dixie is almost 3 years old and Luna is 2 years and 6 moths old .... Never ever sick or anything . Only Dixie have something on her tail lie a scar or scratch ...dk what is this

I don't hate rats, not at all. The nose, the eyes, the ears, its so cute. But the tail? NO THANKS XD But thanks for sharing your life with them, it's quite interesting :D
They clean each others tails, but honestly it isn’t really dirty at all. Sometimes it can be speckled pigments. Owners can also use baby wipes on them, but of course it trips natural oils. It’s normal!
