I love sugar waxing! It took me a couple of tries to get it right but now I love it. It also hurts less than regular waxing. A couple of things that might help you: 1) I've tried the hard wax (without strips) but it just doesn't work for me, so I always use a soft wax (with strips). 2) For a soft wax, you'll need to adjust the ratio of the ingredients: 1 cup sugar, 1/4 cup lemon juice and 1/4 cup water. 2) I keep stirring the whole time to prevent it from boiling over the edge of the pan. 3) I also don't go by temperature, I just watch the colour and the second it becomes a light golden colour I take it of the heat. 4) I let it cool down a bit so that I don't burn myself, but I keep it quite hot and liquid (like a normal wax). Then I spread some of the sugar wax on my leg (in the opposite direction of the hair), put a cotton strip on it (I just cut strips of leftover cotton non stretch fabric) and pull the strip of (in the direction of the hair). If your wax has been sitting in the fridge, just heat it up in the microwave until it's liquid again. Please make sure to test it so you don't burn yourself! 5) I wash the strips just by letting them sit in cold water, like you did. I hope this helps a little bit, good luck!
As a middle eastern woman, waxing is typically the only hair removal technique I use. I'd say in my head there are only 2 waxing methods: the spread and pull with a fabric/waxing paper method, and what Loepsie calls the "ball method", and as you explained very nicely, the wax needs to be very different (soft, liquid and warm) for the spread and pull (as opposed to much harder and cold for the ball method). What I get from a lot of American youtubers, though, is sugar waxing exclusively means the cold wax, ball method in the US, which is confusing for me. I think it's because they don't use sugar-based waxes in Brazilian waxing, which is more popular in the US? So for Americans spread and pull = Brazilian and sugar waxing = the ball method? Also, when pulling the strip, make sure it's done in a quick and low movement (not pulling up on the strip). Hope that makes sense 😊 Love your videos!

I opened the video from the thumbnail, knowing I need to share waxing wisdom. (Self waxing bikini expert.) 1. The area needs to be clean and without moisture (oil, sweat, deodorant) 2. You should apply a thin layer on your skin 3. When you apply you should follow the trend / way your hair grow but when you apply the cloth on the wax or sugaring it should be with a slight different direction. I’ve been using an epilator for several years now and I will never go back to shaving! I use it to remove hair on my legs, arms, and underarms. It definitely was quite painful when I first used it, but it became less painful with each use. Now it hurts a bit when I first start epilating, but only for a few seconds, and then my body goes “ugh, fine” and stops hurting. I’ve never used wax, but I assume it operates on the same principle and your body just has to get used to it over time.
I used an epilator too , but like Lucy , it was really painful at every use, plus my legs looked like someone poked them with a needle . Red dots everywhere. Plus the skin felt kind of numb to the touch. Now I just shave... I want to try sugar waxing, but with my sensitive skin..idk..
Love this method! Thanks for enlightening me. I will say, as with traditional waxing, I would suggest very highly to put baby powder, cornstarch, or rice flour such as yourself, to your skin before waxing. The main reason is to keep the wax from sticking to your skin. If it sticks to your skin, it has a chance of taking the skin along with your hair. I used to think this was silly- until I saw my friend rip skin off when waxing her upper lip. She actually had patches of skin come off to the point where it bled in some spots. So the powder is a very important step.
You did great for your first time, I think the technique takes some practice and getting used to (it can be super messy, sigh...) I tried sugaring for the first time a couple days ago following a tutorial from abetweene and it worked amazing, I was able to do both the strips and hard ball (also, I didn't feel any pain at all which shocked me :0) You should definitely check her out, she makes a lot of dedicated videos about sugaring and also does nails and DIYs! Hope this helps!
Hi Lucy! Here in Latin America this technique is the most popular. You have to apply the wax in the direction of hair growth, and pull in the opposite direction. In addition, the wax must have a much darker color, it was very soft. The more you try, the less it will hurt. 🌸
When u wax cleanse the skin with a toner then the powder and dont forget to hold the skin taught before u rip the hair. To help with irritation and pain after the big rip apply pressure for a couple seconds on the area then clean the residue tone and add an oil to ur skin to help reduce irritation and moisturize. Thats how i learned in esthetics school haha waxing is my favorite treatment to do. I absolutely love ur channel and ur content btw💜💜💜
My mom used to sugar her body hair, and I did too. However, she bought it premade. We would warm it up in the microwave, and use a popcicle stick to apply it good and thin. Then use dry cloth strips to rip it off, just like wax. Then you can wash the strips and use them again. We never used it cold. Never used the "ball" method. Never had irritated skin. I think the warm sugar helps to also open the pores and follicles which makes hair removal easier.
I agree with the humidity....I've made caramel for years and it's always been in the winter, the one time I tried in the summer the caramel was much too soft. I would cook it for longer or make a batch in the winter and have it to use for summer ☺️
I am very familiar with this process as I used to wax my facial hair this way and the problem is your caramel is too soft. It should be a darker amber colour and not this malleable on room temperature. This is the reason why you are able to spread but struggling with the removal of the wax. Anyway, good job and keep trying! :)
I have sensitive skin and always had that reaction when waxed, the red dots actually lasted for days which was not a good look, lol. I'm curious how long your reaction lasts for.. What a great alternative to wax though! Using sugar and being able to wash and reuse the rags is so eco-friendly and sustainable and could save lots of people tonnes of money while reducing waste. I'd love to see a video on how it measures up to the typical store bought strips! Thanks for sharing Lucy, very interesting video as always :)
With wax, you apply in the direction of the hair growth. Then remove the wax in the opposite direction. Also taking an anti-inflammatory (we have ibuprofen in the US) 30min ahead of time, is supposed to help with the pain.
My mom did it for 30 years and it gets further and further apart, and the hair stops growing at some point! It gets super thin and light. At first it takes about 2-4 weeks, it really depends on each person :)
I've tried this before and i cooked mine till it was brown and it worked amazing. I think you got it to the temp it needed to be to caramelize but not cooked long enough to be able to do the ball method.
I’ve tried waxing a couple times and while it does work wonderfully, I can’t stand the regrowth period where you have to wait for the hair to get long enough to wax again. The first time I made sugar wax, I burned it and my whole house reeked 😂
I LOVE your dress :) !!! I gave up on wax because it was too painful, but I really enjoyed watching this video haha. Maybe I would give it a try sometime
I've always waxed, because I'm blessed with a high pain tolerance so it's never bothered me. Edit: It gets easier over time, and since I've done it for years, I don't get any visible irritation on the skin. Mind you, I have fairly thick, olive skin. 🤭
There's a fantastic Lebanese movie called Caramel based around this technique's communal/feminine aspect. REALLy great movie to watch now that you've done this!!
As someone from the middle east I've used this method many times in the past. The consistency was much thicker than the one you're using, almost puddy texture and wouldn't melt as easily as yours did. I think you should have boiled it more to get the caramelized color. This way it would be thicker and you can use it alone without the strips. But I have to say it is really hard to get it right, one minute less or more on the stove could make it too runny or hard. My grandmother used to get it right 90% of the time while my mother probably a 60% of the time. That's why a lot of people nowadays buy ready made from a pharmacy or a supermarket. I myself don't use it anymore because it's too much work and it's so sticky and hurts too much. I either use wax or I shave.
I've been doing a lot of research on sugar waxing and i really wanna try it. Ive never even had a proper wax done before either, but ive always been a diy girl
I’ve used it my whole life lol here are some tips 1.Use a little oil instead of water to kneed it otherwise the water will change the consistency. / when kneeled right you will not need a cloth whatsoever. U will be able to wax just using your little ball of sugar on multiple area instead of one. Just roll it to get a little ball and press the ball on the area u want to wax and pull in opposite direction. The whole wax should come off in the little ball. Lol don’t know if that makes sense 2. don’t use the temp instead watch the color it should be a brownish gold. 3.don’t use water to cook it but use all lemon juice. 4. Use ice on skin to numb it and then dry it before you put the wax this will take away the pain. 5. Use coconut oil after waxing! Makes skin super soft :)
Lol being half middle eastern I’ve been sugar waxing my entire life; let’s see if I can help: I think it’s a bit too moist (undercooked) and has to be a reddish brown when ready. If it isn’t cooked exactly right: even if you refrigerate it the temperature of your body will warm it back down to its cooked texture and it becomes unmanageable again. It’s supposed to be hard as a rock in a container at room temp and you were able to scoop it up, so it wasn’t hard/cooked long enough or at the right temp :) If done right: after cooling, it should be brown and translucent. Then, to use it, you’re supposed to warm it in a water bath slightly until it’s soft enough to scoop out. If you want to wax your legs you’re supposed to cool it until it’s a little bit like play doh so not sticky to your fingers; and knead it until it becomes ivory white. It isn’t supposed to stick to your skin at all and you should be able to use it pretty fast. The cotton strip works too; we typically only use the sugar by itself when it is the right texture. Good luck!! 💕
Ok...so you need to a 100% cotton without any sretch! Put the wax on in an upwar motion and then put the 100% cotton strips in a downward motion rubbing firmly to get all hair. Quickly take stips off in a motion upward parallel to, for example, the leg. Try getting it done professionally and try to mimic the motions used. Using sugar is a great idea and love that sugar will wash out. For a more comfortable experience have a professional waxing. It is not painless. I have had waxing done by my mother who has been licenced since 14. Eventially it is bareley an issue. Take an asprin first. Dont do during ovulation or pms. Your body is very sensetive. Good luck.
It’s quite finicky, and it really needs to be treated like candy. I find for the freehand method as you were attempting initially, it needs to be just a little more firm, which requires you to boil out a little more water. To help determine whether or not the syrup is ready, it helps me to get just a little on the tip of a spoon or butter knife, dip it in ice water, and work it around to room temperature with your hands. It needs to hold form like a good taffy, you can’t have it melting or drooping, or it’s just going to get all over the place. It’s also quite susceptible to changes in humidity and temperature, so I don’t recommend fridging it for the most part. I just keep it in a mason jar in my bathroom, and that’s usually enough as long as I don’t take it out shortly after a shower. I also find it helps to work it well onto the hair before pulling.
I don't know who you watched but abetweene is the one who got me in sugaring. I follow her recipe but always had to improvise like cook for first time, and I overcooked and it did not stick, then I added a bit water so it became sticky and repeated heating. You have to adjust when doing sugaring. But Abetweene is my source of knowledge.
I used to sugar wax because my mom did, but she bought the sugar wax. I forget the brand. It was soft, we used cloth strips, and it works very, very well. Never tried with ball wax. Why bother when cloths worked fantastically?
i've always applied wax the direction of hair growth and remove is away from hair growth (but keep the cloth close to the skin as you rip the hair out)
The pulling step makes a lot of sense - at first I was wondering how caramel by itself was supposed to work. There's actually a shop out there that makes ALL of their candy that way and sticks to the old techniques from the (I think) 1800s. That's including the old machines and everything
I did sugar waxing for years. I've since lasered it off. The more often you wax with this method the less it hurts. I'm guessing because there's less hair growth if you're doing it often enough and getting the hair between cycle growth. I didn't use waxing strips, just the ball method. Your sugar wasn't cooked enough for the ball method. It's possible that your thermometer was sitting too low in the pan and reading too hot. I never used a use a thermometer to make mine. I went by color instead, it should be the color of honey. I literally would grab my jar of honey to make sure it was the right color. If you really want to use a thermometer, buy a high quality one that's digital, and instant read instead. Once it cools it's very stiff, which is why you need to work it to make it pliable again and it makes it stickier. I stored mine in the fridge and would slightly heat it up in the microwave. Use small amounts at a time, small golf ball size, as the sugar heats up with your skin and hands, it will become too sticky and just stick to your skin. That's when you know you need to grab another golf ball size and aerate it again and keep going. I like this recipe: www.wikihow.com/Make-Sugar-Wax
I think working with the hard wax would be easier and less messy. My recipe is 2 cups sugar, 1 cup water and a some citric acid instead of lemon juice, then I steer it until it boils and wait for it to turn a little bit yellow then let it cool
Your thermometer might be out of wack with a few degrees, put it in boiling water and see if it says 100 C. Also add a little glucose to the sugar, that helps with the humidity problem .
You are supposed to place the strip on and rub in the direction the hair grows to. Then when you pull it off, go the opposite direction away from the way the hair grows.
I live in a country where sugaring is one of the common way to remove such type of hair. There are many special beauty salons and special masters who do procedures. In salons masters buy gel for sugaring which is made on factory. Unfortunately, sugaring doesn't appeal to me cos the speed of appearing my hair is quite fast 😄
The first time I went to get my eye brows done in highschool we used the sugaring technique and man, it was painful. But apparently it is common for irritation to occur the first time you get it done. But yeah, I find normal waxing to be much more effective. At least for eye brows.
Sugar wax should be boiling 20-30 minutes in low temperature. It should have see-through brown-golden color. After cooling down it should be pretty hard (you'll need a spoon to get it from the box but you can use it without stripes, just simply form it with your hands until it gets "pearly" shine). If sugar gets dark-milky while cooking, you overheated it and it's burned.
The only problem with waxing with sugar or wax is that overtime the skin becomes loose from the all the pulling. I've seen my mom who has waxed for years have loose skin under her arm pits from all the waxing. I don't want to tug at my skin like that and hurt my body. I know some people put one hand on the area to wax and one hand pulls the strip. It's very difficult to do it on one self. I rather go hairy or shave.
all of my cousins did this for years ... when i was a senior in high school they said they’d do my legs omg i was screaming haha but it only hurts like the first couple times then no pain after
You needed to believe in the kneading meathead, after the sugar cools down a little, you knead it until it hardens, and does not stick to your hands as much. This way it will become less painful, and wont irritate your skin as much. If you wanted to use yours, I would recommend you apply it on your skin when its worm with a stick, and do the same thing you did with the cotton cloth.
I've done it a couple of times but I don't know why, the last time I did it, it was very painful and I got big bruises all over my legs. Edit: Don't put oil or something else on freshly epilated areas. It can cause bad irritations. Wait until your skin is not longer red and irritated.

@@nyxldx I used to make it homemade and struggled ALOT! I find it easier for me to order on Amazon, though it's still made with natural ingredients of course ❤️www.amazon.com/Sugaring-Organic-Standard-Hair-Removal/dp/B00JHQJGA8/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=sugar+wax+cocojojo&qid=1559488207&s=gateway&sprefix=sugar+qax+coc&sr=8-3
@@AnnaPotts818swifferbaby Thank you *so* much!
I've tried to make it alone so many times and I always failed!
It actually never occurred me to order it online
Again, thank you so much!
@@nyxldx sure! I just couldn't make mine consistently to save my life lol, but I loved the method
You are amazing. It was really fun watching. The main thing I took away from this video though: Please tell us more about your DnD characters
I was not expecting that video from you but I'm not mad at it AT ALL ^^ It's nice being surprised
Keep trying. The pain should lessen over time
I’ve been using an epilator for several years now and I will never go back to shaving!
I use an epilator too, its great. I haven't been brave enough to do it on my underarms though lol.
@@pencil_girl12 I epilated my underarms once. There were tears. ;o) I love using it for my legs though.
I used an epilator a few times and every time it hurt so much, drew blood, and I cried 😂 Not worth it for me, haha!
You are brave! It seems like you need to have the perfect conditions to make the wax and I don’t have the patience!
I just found your channel and I’m so happy I did! I like watching all these vintage vids you do. They are cool
Hi Lucy, will you consider doing another updated Bridget Bardot hair tutorial please? 🙏 💖
Credit where credit is due! was brave of you to try this, had to be QUITE painful!!!
I am very familiar with this process as I used to wax my facial hair this way and the problem is your caramel is too soft. It should be a darker amber colour and not this malleable on room temperature. This is the reason why you are able to spread but struggling with the removal of the wax. Anyway, good job and keep trying! :)
I saw what i believe to be a tea collection behind you. Can we get a tea tour? I would love to know which teas you drink.
Also taking an anti-inflammatory (we have ibuprofen in the US) 30min ahead of time, is supposed to help with the pain.
it must have hurt a lot. Your brave
Make sure to tell us how long it takes for the hair to grow back. I'm interested in trying it!
I'm intrigued Lucy, what hair do you pluck from your face and why?!? Xx
Her upper lip. Some times you get hair there. Or your chin.
Eyebrows, upper lip sometimes, and those few pesky dark chin hairs, haha! Just for aesthetic purposes :)
I’ve used it my whole life lol here are some tips
1.Use a little oil instead of water to kneed it otherwise the water will change the consistency.
/ when kneeled right you will not need a cloth whatsoever. U will be able to wax just using your little ball of sugar on multiple area instead of one. Just roll it to get a little ball and press the ball on the area u want to wax and pull in opposite direction. The whole wax should come off in the little ball. Lol don’t know if that makes sense
2. don’t use the temp instead watch the color it should be a brownish gold.
3.don’t use water to cook it but use all lemon juice.
4. Use ice on skin to numb it and then dry it before you put the wax this will take away the pain.
5. Use coconut oil after waxing! Makes skin super soft :)
How sweet! (Everyone saw this joke coming)
Good luck.
Thanks for the glasses tip Lucy! You beautiful woman
obviously her moustache😜
I adore your videos! Thanks for trying this. After watching, I think I'll try too! 😁😁
And last time I did it I was successful and had my first ball form :D
I used the ball method for my first few times but now I think the strip method is definitely easier to get the consistency right.
I used to sugar wax because my mom did, but she bought the sugar wax. I forget the brand. It was soft, we used cloth strips, and it works very, very well. Never tried with ball wax. Why bother when cloths worked fantastically?
6:08 yep. Had the same reaction when first trying to made dough for bread. I couldnt get it off fast enough
I *adore* the dress you're wearing
You are the hero we need.
I have been doing this for years now, but I usually buy my sugaring from a bazaar (Im in Denmark)
i've always applied wax the direction of hair growth and remove is away from hair growth (but keep the cloth close to the skin as you rip the hair out)
The pulling step makes a lot of sense - at first I was wondering how caramel by itself was supposed to work.
Simple and superb
I think working with the hard wax would be easier and less messy. My recipe is 2 cups sugar, 1 cup water and a some citric acid instead of lemon juice, then I steer it until it boils and wait for it to turn a little bit yellow then let it cool
Your thermometer might be out of wack with a few degrees, put it in boiling water and see if it says 100 C. Also add a little glucose to the sugar, that helps with the humidity problem .
You are supposed to place the strip on and rub in the direction the hair grows to. Then when you pull it off, go the opposite direction away from the way the hair grows.
This video was so entertaining! Now I want to try it, too.
When applying wax make sure to apply in the direction of hair growth and when you remove the strip go against the way your hair goes.
Omg your dress is gorgeous
Wow thank you for this video!!!!
🌸🌸🌸
I always wanted to know how was it irl
I think you could use a better spatula for applying the sugar wax 🤗
She's so pretty with whatever she does and her glasses are cute too
Try a thicker layer when you put it on your skin, that way it’ll come off like a sheet instead of breaking and melting on you
Hi Lucy ....Are you growing your bangs for summer??
I love sugaring but I can never get the ball to work. I just usually use strips
I've done this technique for about a year and what I do is apply aloe vera afterwards to calm my skin down.
It needs to cook longer stirring the whole time. Your looking for a golden brown color. Also for ball method you need to work ot longer.
soft paste should be better with strips, if you dont want to use strips maybe try a hard paste instead
Even as somebody who used to make caramel as part of my daily work routine, I was sweating for you.
all of my cousins did this for years ...
when i was a senior in high school they said they’d do my legs
omg i was screaming haha
but it only hurts like the first couple times then no pain after
use honey instead...honey and lemonjuice goes in the microwave for a little while just to soften it, if it gets too hot, wait for it to cool down
Yeah I never liked doing the ball technique. It’s just too sticky on my hands and I just prefer strips
I do this sometimes I think yours is not dark enough mines always darker than that maybe heat it some more next time
I love this lady !
Going to try this! ✨
I've done it a couple of times but I don't know why, the last time I did it, it was very painful and I got big bruises all over my legs.
Edit: Don't put oil or something else on freshly epilated areas. It can cause bad irritations. Wait until your skin is not longer red and irritated.
