- The driving test day can be a costly experience. We cover the three options that you can choose from when taking your driving test in the UK.
Option 1 is using your own car for the driving test, this is usually the cheapest option of the 3.
Option 2 is hire a learner car for the driving test day that has dual controls fitted. In this example we are using a well know car hire company.
This is the link Arnold Clark where if you need to you can hire a new learner car for the driving test.

Option 3 is the most popular. That is to let your driving instructor take you to the driving test using the driving instructor car for the driving test.

I'm a year too late but this video is still very relevant.
My old instructor quoted me £135 (not including the DVSA fee) but my new instructor has told me £80 - a difference of £55 and they're from the same company which is outrageous. It's £33 per hour or £65 for two. I'm not arguing because it seems like everyone else is charging way more! I'm in Kent.
Thanks for sharing
Like others, I was charged an extra £100 to use my instructors vehicle for the test on top of the cost of the 1hr lesson beforehand (£32) and the test fee (£62). It was a well known driving school so I contacted them about it and was surprised to be told that I could’ve been charged upwards of £150 extra. Mind you I was notified about the extra fee the lesson before my test so couldn’t even organise to borrow a car.
That’s shocking that a well known driving school is letting its instructors charge extra.
Exactly similar experience here in London, was told of the extra charges (£70) day before the test, even tried to reason with him but he told me that's his price if I don't pay he won't turn up to take me to the test.
I am also an instructor. Never have i once thought about charging extra for the driving test. I have charged for if they want me to go to a test centre a good few miles away. But that's just by adding the extra traveling time. So it's a 3 hour lesson instead of a two hour maybe. Or 2 2 hour lessons with a 30 minute break in between. (don't charge for the break) depending on how far we are going.
Fuel, insurance and mileage are all thing that should be covered with the base price. Aswell as personal income
straight on the internet i go and found this video after asking how much my instructor charges for test day that is coming soon, he said £95 - kindly asked him what does the price covers on the day, all i got was vague answer of “2 plus hours” in reply 😅
thank you for this video, very helpful
If in total from pick up and drop off you are only on the instructor car for 2 hours, then there should be 2 hours of lesson charge. If on your instructor’s website they say they charge extra for, ask what.
Good luck on your test.
I accidentally ruined my instructor’s alloys on a test, so after that, I ended up taking my mum’s car out for the rest of my tests. I didn’t mind though as I saved a lot of money. You just have to mindful that your car is test worthy, clean, everything works ect, and that you have a spare interior mirror. Taking my mum’s car made any failures a bit better knowing that I only paid £60 odd instead of the money I’d have paid to take my instructor’s car
That’s good
Yes same thing as what you said happened to the young lady you were talking to also mentioned the extra cost of insurancr
It is not fair. Sorry to hear.
In leisecter all instructors tooks only on test day 130 or 150 pounds for them so we pay 62+130=£192 or 150+62=£212 on test day .I paid twice
Wow that’s lots of money
In London apart from the 2 hour lesson (£66), my instructor charges £100 on test day for using his car, the insurance etc.
Not much choice. We're at the mercy of some instructors. So £228 in total on test day including DVSA fee of £62
Ripped you off
@Learn to drive Travis yeah agreed. Not much choice with the shortage of instructors. Third test next month 😫😫😫
Good luck on your driving test. I hope it’s a pass for you.
I had the same issue, I also live in London.
I don't get that, cause what's the difference between a lesson and a test, you're still driving the car the same, if anything it should be less cause you'll be waiting around a short while (not using the car) and also the instructor has to do nothing while you do the test.
I've had no tests in my area for a long time. So I've had to book a fast-tracked test for £150 and £75 for the pre-hour and test
Wow. I hope it works out for you.
I passed in 1974, not sure how much the test fee was but lesson/hire of instructors car was two times £2. That is £4 all in and arm signals were still on the syllabus until 1975,
Wow. How times have changed
Price can fluctuate depending on area time of test distance etc.
That’s right, that’s what I say
I just paid my instructor a fee for 2 hours. So it was £60 to the instructor and then the DVSA fee.
That good to hear.
I got charged what you said in the last segment james but it's made me even more determined to get it spot on this time
Good luck on the day Kenneth.
Thank you
I payed £85 for my test, £62 for the test and £23 for the lesson. my instructor done bundle prices which was great as I l was getting it much cheaper for 10 lessons
Sounds good
I have got charged for 162£ even for booking test because if i do my self the date is always to far
So i wanted early still a month later and it costed me 162
That is expensive
Very interesting this video. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
I paid the £62 for the test, and my instructor is charging me £100 to use her car, my test is next month, hope I pass first time 😊
Wow, how many hours are you using the instructor car for?
Good luck on the day.
Only for the practical driving test, 50mins, thank you I feel confident I will 🎉
@@yk-jess all the best on the day
I had to pay to rent my instructors car. It was a few hundred quid
You are joking right
@@JamesTravis nope and I had to sit the test three times. That was an expensive mistake
I've got my driving test tomorrow, and I'm being charged £110 for the day, which includes the hour lesson before, and the cost of borrowing my instructors car. My test booking of £62 is seperate. Is that a fair amount?
£55 per hour for 2 hours. (£110). Sounds expensive. But if that what you are normally charged for your driving lessons then ok.
Surely these instructors charging extra on top of the lesson time can be reported to the dvsa.
You would hope the persons being asked to pay extra would challenge their instructor. But I see it way too often. A good instructor would only charge there normal and nothing extra.
@@JamesTravis I'm an instructor with AA driving school. I don't even think it's possible to do that as my pupils pay through them.
@@TheWeepingDalek all driving schools should be the same as your driving school. Unfortunately there are some instructors that do charge. I have seen them boasting in test centres.
Mine was
£62 DVLA
£70 INSTRUCTOR (2HOURS)
Normally I pay £32 a lesson so ended up paying 6quid extra for the test for using my instructors car (This was Milton Keynes)
Altogether £132, don't think that's too bad, what's your thought?
Not bad
Same, but 62 + 66 (Discount from 70 as I had a block)
When I did my test last year am in Scottish borders I payed 35 a lesson so was 2 hours 70 plus 62 for test so it comes to 132 I had to do it 3 times so came to about 396 quid in total just on tests haha
Excellent
Hi,
This is really useful. I have a question. I was driving my own car using my international license in the Uk for the last 1 year, now the license is expired and with my provisional am I allowed to take my own to the driving test? I do have a proper insurance in place. Please let me know.
Yes you are allowed to take your own car for the driving test. But because your international licence has expired, when you drive now as a provisional licence holder you would need a supervisor in the passenger sent. The supervisor needs to hold a full licence for 3 years or more and is over 21 years old. The same goes for the driving test, you would need a supervisor.
I live in London and got charged £170 for my test on the day. £100 was just insurance apparently.
Instructor insurance for the who year is on average £350. They are ripping you off unfortunately
@@JamesTravis I thought so, that explains why he looked so guilty after I failed my test and I paid him the £170. I wanted to change driving schools but in London it's impossible to find a school that will teach you.
My wife's driving instructor informed her to pay £320 for test day includes 1 hour lesson before test. We live in Ashford, London. Do you think this price is reasonable?
That sounds very expensive. Does that include the cost of the driving test booking?
@@JamesTravis no we paid separately.
@@vincyrodrigues3880 that is very expensive. Never heard of an instructor charging so much.
@@JamesTravis we thought so, it was expensive, we will change the instructor. Thankyou for your reply.
I’m being charged £95 for test day and £80 on top for using my instructors car. Do you think its a reasonable price?
Is the £95 for booking your driving test appointment?
If the £80 is for the use of your instructor car for 2 hours and that is normal for your lesson price, then ok.
Hi,
I have a question. I’m driving my own car as a named driver on international license. Can I take my car for driving test or do I need learner insurance for one day?
My Instructor charged me for 2 hours (1 hour before test and 1 hour during test) which is understandable and fair. However he also said he’s charging me an additional £30 for insurance fee which I was a little confused by. Isn’t learner’s tests covered by the instructors driving instructor insurance? I saw in your video that if I’m taking a test with the instructor I should only be charged for those two hours. What do you think travis?
They should not be charging you extra for insurance. All instructor insurance covers driving tests and driving lessons as one price. Unfortunately your instructor is trying to charge you extra for no reason. The two hours for the driving test is about right.
My instructor is asling for more because she needs to get her car cleaned and service but surely she needs to do that anyway and it shouldn't come out of my pocket??
Cleaning the car and service is all part of the job. All you pay for is the hourly rate x the hours used.
cost me 72.00 to hire the car and hour before
Thanks for info
Great Video. May I know what the insurance for the 2-hour test will cost around?
If you are learning with an instructor, it should cost nothing as it is included in the lesson price.
I just charge my pupils for the two hours, £58.
I am the same
I got charged £90 for my test
What did you get for that?
Mine charged me £120
And that was in my own car. He came to my test
Wow, that’s a lot of
@@JamesTravis and I used my own car and petrol. Joke hey
@@kmc79228 it does sound like they were charging way too much.
I’m being charged £95 for test day and £80 on top for using my instructors car. Do you think its a reasonable price?
What is the £95 pound for? Is this the booking fee for the driving test?
The £80 using your instructor car is this for 2 to 3 hours?
